The Stockdale Mill, a 158-year-old water-powered flour mill and dam located just within the county’s western border, is a tribute to not only craftsmanship, but the recognition
of locals to preserve a special part of the area’s history. Stockdale, located on the Eel River precisely on the border of Wabash and Miami counties, is an unincorporated
community located just west of Roann, sharing land in both counties. According to the book “Wabash County History Bicentennial Edition 1976,” Stockdale was platted in
October 1839 by Thomas Goudy, a few years after Col. John Anderson from Ohio traveled up the Eel River with his family from Logansport. During the Civil War, the mill supplied
flour and meal to the Union Army.

news through the use of newsreels. However, the Before
unused spaces fell into disrepair.

In January 2010, The Honeywell Foundation, a
public charity dedicated to enhancement of local social,
artistic, recreational, and cultural opportunities,
acquired the historical building. Since taking
ownership, the Foundation has completed a number
of much-needed upgrades, making the lobby and main
stage once again functional for community use as a
movie theater and live performance venue.

But, there is more work to be done. In order to
transform the Eagles Theatre building into a hub of
arts and culture in Northeast Indiana, The Honeywell
Foundation has initiated the exciting Eagles
Renovation Project. Soon, Eagles Theatre will once
again live up to its full potential.

Looking Forward to a New Chapter 4th floor ballroom in its current state.

The Eagles Renovation Project is the largest After
construction project to take place at the site since the
building first opened its doors more than a century
ago. The purpose of the Eagles Renovation Project is
twofold: it is both a cosmetic and structural renovation,
but it will also establish new educational programs to
benefit the local and regional community.

Top-to-bottom construction on the building began
in September 2017 and is scheduled to wrap up in mid-
to late-2018. Eagles Theatre is temporarily closed to the
public while renovations are underway.

By the end of the renovation, the structure will boast
a fully restored main stage and theatre with dressing
rooms and storage space to allow for increased live
programming. The second floor will be updated to
accommodate state-of-the-art recording and film
studios. Third floor classrooms will be designed for
multiple uses, allowing for flexible programming
opportunities. The basement will hold a second movie
screen to showcase films and video projects for public
viewings, private screenings, and event rentals.

Additionally, the once very grand and ornate fourth
floor ballroom will be restored to its former glory as a
rentable events space complete with onsite catering
kitchen.

The floors above the original theatre will soon be
able to accommodate an array of new educational and
community programs, all designed to enhance fine arts
opportunities available in Wabash and to the larger
Northeast Indiana community.

performed by national touring companies will exhibit
live theatrical performances of children’s literature
studied in the classroom.

Through a partnership with Heartland Career
Center, local students will be able to earn dual college
credit and certifications with a multimedia arts
program. The new recording studios, multi-use
classrooms, and video and sound editing rooms in
the upper floors of the building will be utilized for a
student-centered, hands-on curriculum involving
recording and film projects.

These additions will establish educational and
cultural opportunities previously unavailable in
our area and bring countless benefits to the local
community and greater Northeast Indiana region.

These benefits were recognized by generous
grantors, including those affiliated with Stellar
Communities. The Stellar Communities Designation
was awarded to Eagles Theatre in response to the
community and economic development opportunities
that the project represents.

Additionally, the Regional Cities Initiative also
granted funds to the Eagles Renovation Project thanks
to its support of the “Road to One Million” goal. The
Road to One Million is an exciting campaign backed
by the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership,
encouraging improvement in the quality of life
needed to become a region of one million residents.
By providing arts and education opportunities in the
renovated space, Eagles Theatre will draw top talent
and expand the arts and cultural landscape in the
region.

Looking Forward to a Bright Future at Eagles

Soon, Eagles Theatre will once again open its doors
to the public of Northeast Indiana for a variety of arts
and cultural experiences. Whether you want to sign up
for an educational course, see a blockbuster film with
your family, or rent out a space for an exciting event, the
historic Eagles Theatre will support our community
and larger region for generations to come.

Wabash.

They’ve done this through an annual “Clean out
the Banks” event each summer since 2011, taking out
literally dozens of tons of trash from Wabash County’s
19-mile stretch of the Wabash.

Items extracted from the river during the summer
initiative include hundreds of tires and tons of steel,
along with car batteries, electronics, chemicals,
propane and oil tanks, the front end of a bus, plumbing
fixtures, computers, TVs, sunken boats, a camper,
furniture and even meth labs.

The Defenders have gotten some money invested
into the Wabash as well in terms of grant money. In
2016 alone, the organization received at least $172,000
in grants that will have been used toward watershed
testing and research along portions of the Wabash
throughout 2017, with the goal being improving the
quality of water feeding into it from streams and
ditches.

Things are also exciting north of the Wabash River
and its namesake town.

After years of fundraising, the Eel River, formerly
dubbed by the Miami as “Kenapocomoco” (snake
fish), can finally boast a canoe boat launch in North
Manchester.

The project features a boat launch, floating pier,
two-person restroom building, a parking lot and
a playground area along the Eel River on a Mill
Street property that was previously home to a trailer
park. That was until the North Manchester Town
government in early 2015 purchased the plat of land
that was considered blighted for years.

Art Festivals build economic & social capital.

We value the arts!
The recognition of a community's arts and culture assets is an important element of economic
development. Creatively acknowledging and marketing community assets can attract a strong
workforce and successful firms, as well as help sustain a positive quality of life. Arts and cultural
activities can draw crowds from within and around the community. Increasing the number of visitors as
well as enhancing resident participation helps build economic and social capital.
