Higher Education, in numbers

A decade on from the 2012 Higher Education Reforms, and despite Brexit and Covid, our
institutions remain in good shape.

What happened in 2012
A decade ago the UK government made a number
of sweeping changes to Higher Education, notably
raising tuition fees to £9,000, whilst cutting most
ongoing direct public funding for tuition.

It also changed loan terms by increasing the
repayment threshold to £21,000, charging a
real rate of interest on loans for those making
repayments, whilst extending the maximum
duration of loans (to 30 years).

With average fees of over £8,000, England had the However, record numbers were accepted in 2013,

reforms led to predictions that the number of new
students would fall in 2012, as it did when fees
were introduced and raised in the past.

While previously, earlier falls were quickly reversed, New record highs were again reached in 2020 and
the fear was that a deeper and longer fall in 2021. This bucked the overall expected trend post-

there are proportionately more overseas students
studying postgraduate courses.

Going forward
While many Higher Education institutions have
come in for criticism in recent times for political
and social bias, what’s clear is the fact most are as
popular as ever.

They have streamlined processes and, seemingly,
have weathered the storm that Covid swept in.

The battle going forward switches back to
retaining the prestige and usefulness of ‘degree’
status, when various industries now subscribe to a
more vocational route towards employee criteria.
