Janet’s natural, caring nature becomes apparent

Town Hall Dental Helping the
Homeless and Refugees in Calais

A team of volunteers, including Dentists from Town Hall Dental
and local homeless group Focus4Hope, have returned from
providing emergency dental care and supplies to refugees in Calais.
The team from Town Hall included Dr Rangzeb, Dr Chana and Nurses Rachel
and Kayla, plus a host of volunteers. Many of the volunteers already provide
essential care and support for the homeless in Leeds City Centre. Working
alongside refugee crisis charity Care4Calais and supported by donations
from local residents and businesses, the group were able to operate a
‘mobile dental surgery’out of a van to provide essential treatment for
refugees without access to healthcare.
The refugee crisis in Calais made headline news in 2016 when the‘Calais
Jungle’was dismantled by French authorities. Despite this, several
thousand refugees still live in the forests and camps around Northern
France, surviving on the support of charities and volunteers in the area.
While many refugees are from Syria, a number of those in the area
are fleeing war and persecution in other countries including Sudan,
Afghanistan and Iran.
Town Hall Dental, through their non-profit Town Hall Foundation, have
been at the forefront of community work in West Yorkshire in recent months.
Their activities include volunteering with the homeless in Leeds as well as
providing oral health education in schools.
Trustee of Community Foundation for Calderdale and Practice Manager at
Town Hall Dental, Rachel Dilley, commented“Dental care is one of the highest
priority treatments we’ve seen working with the homeless in Leeds, and it was
the same for the people in Calais. Some of the people there are children as
young as seven with dental pain, and others have been living there for years.
It was such a pleasure to use our skills for such a positive cause”.
As well as the work of Town Hall Dental, community homeless group
Focus4Hope supported their work by providing essential supplies for the
refugees and distributing care packages. Focus4Hope Founder Louise Reed
added“We’re always so inspired by the resilience and compassion of the
people in Calais, some of whom have been sleeping rough for years and
are as young as six years old. This time has been extra special thanks to the
amazing local support and essential work of the Town Hall Dental team”.

allure lies. The CR-V Hybrid’s 51.4mpg fuel efficiency
isn’t earth-shattering, but it’s comparable with most
similarly-sized diesel-driven vehicles. It’ll be easier
on the pocket than the standard petrol-propelled
version, that’s for sure.

Alas, practicality isn’t as good with the CR-V Hybrid.
This is because the environmentally-friendly power
system cuts into the Honda’s boot space, slashing it
from 561 litres to 497 litres. There’s a lot of handy
room in the cabin, though - and leg and headspace
in the rear are better than ever.

Keep an eye out for the new CR-V Hybrid – you can
order it now, but it officially goes on sale in the UK
in February 2019.

Forsythia

Best of the bunch
Forsythia provides a burst of dazzling
spring colour with tis showers of bright
yellow flowers on leafless stems,
appearing in March and April. This
shrub (which will withstand the harshest
weather) grows well in the back of the
border, will cover a wall or bare ground
effectively and also does well as a
flowering hedge if you’ve plenty of room.
Many varieties are available, from the
palest yellow to blinding orange. It will
grow in any garden soil and does best
in full sun, although it will also thrive in
partial shade.
Forsynthias should be pruned immediately
after flowering, cutting back shoots which
bear faded blooms, to encourage new
growth for next spring.
