Keith and Kevin are identical twins They left the south on a long, long drive
On a bus in the south is where our story begins Headed northbound on highway 95
So far to go
Still feeling blue Without brother, Joe
Leaving everything they knew
Keith and Kevin are identical twins They left the south on a long, long drive
The city was different with buildings so tall
Houses so close and front yards so small
Cars and trains
Trolleys and drains
The city was different with buildings so tall
A new home in the city with concrete steps
A tiny backyard and no trees except
An oak tree so tall
They couldn’t climb at all
A new home in the city with concrete steps
The house wasn’t the only thing that was new Little baby sister was Mother’s new joy
There was something else they had to get used to But Keith and Kevin had hoped for a boy
A new family member She seemed alright
Arrived in November But she cried every night
The house wasn’t the only thing that was new Little baby sister was Mother’s new joy
“I’m bored,” said Keith. “What can we do today?”
Mother said, “Why not go outside and play?”
“You can play hide and seek
But don’t cross the street!”
“I’m bored,” said Keith. What can we do today?”
The twins missed the cows, the pigs and the trees
And the times they would sit on Grandfather’s knees
The friends they know
And big brother Joe
The twins missed the cows, the pigs and the trees
A little girl stood at the house next door
She stared at the twins and the clothes they wore
“You both look the same
What are your names?”
A little girl stood at the house next door
“I’m Keith.” “I’m Kevin,” they said rather shy
“My name is, Cookie,” she said in reply
“Come on, let’s play,”
“It’s such a nice day!”
“I’m Keith.” “I’m Kevin,” they said rather shy
“They played hide and seek and tag, you’re it Older and taller Cookie stood with pride
Cookie was so fast, the twins wanted to quit She was faster than the twins and knew where to hide
“You don’t play fair,” “I win, I win!”
Keith said in despair She said with a grin
They played hide and seek and tag, you’re it Older and taller Cookie stood with pride
“Let’s go to the store and buy something sweet, “But we’re not allowed to go over there”
It’s just over there right across the street” Kevin said with fear, but Keith didn’t care
I’ll share my money
For candy, so yummy “It will be fun
We just have to run”
“Let’s go to the store and buy something sweet” “But we’re not allowed to go over there”
They looked to the left, they looked to the right Kevin was afraid but he ran with them too
No cars, no trucks, no buses in sight He knew it was the wrong thing to do
Together they ran “Mommy will be mad
Hand in hand This will be bad”
They looked to the left, they looked to the right Kevin was afraid but he ran with them too
They ran so fast, Keith fell at the door
Chipped his front tooth on the steps of the store
Lip black and blue
Blood on his shoe
They ran so fast, Keith fell at the door
Back home Keith ran, with tears in his eyes
Mother came to the door when she heard his cries
“What happened to you?
What did you do?”
Back home Keith ran with tears in his eyes
“I told you not to cross the street when you play”
“See what happens when you do not obey?”
We now must go
To the dentist, you know
“I told you not to cross the street when you play.”
The neighborhood dentist was three blocks away
The doctor said “first, we need an x-ray”
A drill and a tap
He filled the front gap
The neighborhood dentist was three blocks away
Punished for disobeying their mother
Keith and Kevin stayed home with each other
Doom and gloom
Stuck in their room
Punished for disobeying their mother
Kevin was bored and Keith was in pain
The sun went away and it began to rain
But they couldn’t go wrong
With a book and a song
Kevin was bored and Keith was in pain
They sang Jimmy Crack Corn and Little Boy Blue
And then the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe
They passed the time
Singing nursery rhymes
They sang Jimmy Crack Corn and Little Boy Blue
They read and sang and laughed some more
Then all of a sudden Mother came to the door
She said “Fun is OK,
But you must obey”
They read and sang and laughed some more
“It doesn’t matter what other kids do
I have to take good care of you,
So all my rules
Are safety tools
It doesn’t matter what other kids do”
“You can keep on reading; it’s a great thing to do “We’ll see elephants, lions and tigers and bears?”
And tomorrow, maybe we’ll go to the zoo!” Kevin asked Mother as he fell from his chair
“But you have to be good “Yes,” Momma said
Like little boys should “But it’s now time for bed.”
You can keep on reading; it’s a great thing to do” “We’ll see elephants, lions and tigers and bears!”
The Philadelphia Zoo was so much fun
They didn’t want the day to be done
Gorillas, big cats
Monkeys and bats
The Philadelphia Zoo was so much fun
“This was your treat for being so good
And for facing big change as I hoped you would”
New city, new school
New friends, new rules
“This was your treat for being so good.”
So, this is how the next story begins
A big gray building so scary to the twins
A big sloppy mess
Trouble at recess
So this is how the next story begins
Keith and Kevin are identical twins
But this isn’t where our story ends
There is much more trouble
That’s always double
Keith and Kevin are identical twins
