have it to the full. love and warmth. We follow the teachings of Jesus and, as we grow in
child of God. This takes place in a school where there is an abundance of
spirit, every day is full of learning, fun and friendship.
Our Mission is to foster a lifelong love of God, to prepare our children to
live good Christian lives and to know that we are all brothers and sisters of
Jesus united around the world.
The Word of God is central to all that we do. We aim to provide an
excellent education where kindness, respect and tolerance are promoted
and developed. We teach pupils about the Catholic religion and how to live
their lives as missionary disciples of Christ.
RE is the core of the core curriculum and we believe it is also evident each
day in the classroom in the attitudes, responsibilities and skills we try to
develop in our children, in the example of the staff and in the way we treat
everyone we come into contact with.
The 5 W’s – welcome, welfare, worship, word and witness underpin the
growth of each person’s spirituality and the spiritual development of our
school community. They bring a comprehensible structure to our work as
Catholic educators and, crucially, allow the children to see their growth as
‘children of God’ in a rewarding and diverse way.
In order that we might have life in all its fullness, our school family will:
Welcome – Warmly welcome everyone to our school as Jesus welcomes us
to the family of God
Welfare – Love, value and respect each other as Jesus intended and reach
out to those who need us everywhere, making God’s world better place.
Word – Place the Word of God at the centre of all we do.
Worship – Worship the Lord our God joyfully with all our hearts.
Witness – Be witnesses of a loving God, who is at the heart of all we do, by
creating a happy atmosphere, lasting friendships and wonderful memories.

In 1989, governments across the world promised all children the same rights by adopting the UN Con-

We are a Rights Respecting Community
At St Brendan’s, we continually strive to promote an ethos which
reflects UNICEF's 'Rights' Respecting School Award' (RRSA). The
award recognises schools that have put the UN Convention on the
Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart of their planning, policies,
practice and ethos. A rights' respecting school is a community
where children's rights are learned, taught, practised, respected,
protected and promoted. This reflects our Catholic identity as
missionary disciples in a modern and diverse world.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is the basis of all
treated fairly. These are our rights. UNICEF's work and states that every child has a right to:
a childhood (including protection from harm);
be educated (including all girls and boys completing primary
school);
be healthy (including having clean water, nutritious food and
medical care);
be treated fairly (including changing laws and practices that
are unfair on children);
be heard (including considering children's views).
At St Brendan’s, we have a pupil voice group know as the Rights
Respecters Team. This group allows pupils to express their views
about the school .
‘Respect for the views of the child/a child's right to be heard’.
(Article 12 )
Our work on being a Rights Respecting School ensures our children
and the school community learn about children’s rights, putting
them into practice every day.

The School Community
PUPILS
Pupils are the focus of all that the school does. We are proud of our
children and are often complimented on their good manners and
behaviour by visitors to our school and when we are out on visits in the
community. Pupil voice is an important aspect in ensuring a sense of
partnership whereby pupils have an input into the life of the school.
Our older pupils are essential members of the school leadership team
and carry out their duties as School Chaplains and Prefects.
GOVERNORS
As a Voluntary Aided school the Governors run the school on behalf of
The Diocese of Salford. The Governors are made up of various groups
including: Foundation Governors (representing the Bishop); Parent
Governors; Staff Governors and an LA Governor.
PARISH
The school supports the parish of Corpus Christi in the preparation of
our children for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and receiving the
Eucharist at their First Holy Communion.
Our daily Collective Act of Worship is an important part of our school
day. This may take the form of whole school or key stage assembly,
Mass or class prayers. Classes will lead prayer services, Mass and
assemblies, to which parents are invited.
PARENTS
We actively encourage a close partnership with parents and school and
listen carefully to their point of view. There are a number of
opportunities for parents to be involved in the daily life of our school.
Class Mass and assemblies are an opportunity for parents to join in
prayer and celebrations.
ST BRENDAN’S PTA
All parents of children at the school are automatically members of the
PTA.
The meetings are informal and open to all parents. Information can be
found on their Facebook page:

Admissions Policy for September 2021
The Catholic Faith and the Teachings of the Roman Catholic Church have an essential role in school
life and influence every aspect of the curriculum. We ask all parents applying for a place here to
respect this ethos and its importance to the school community. This does not affect the right of
parents who are not of the Faith of this school to apply for and be considered for a place at St
Brendan’s RC Primary School.
Our Admissions Policy
St Brendan’s is a Roman Catholic Primary School under the trusteeship of the Diocese of Salford. It
is maintained by Bolton Local Education Authority. As a Voluntary Aided School, the Governing
Board is the Admissions Authority and is responsible for taking decisions on applications for
admissions. The co-ordination of admissions arrangements is undertaken by the Local Authority.
For the school year commencing September 2021, the Governing Board has set its admissions
number at 30.
Admissions to the school will be made by the Governing Board. All preferences listed on the Local
Authority Preference Form will be considered on an equal basis with the following set of
admissions criteria forming a priority order where there are more applications for admissions than
the school has places available.
1. Baptised Roman Catholic Looked After Children and baptised Catholic previously Looked
After Children.
2. Baptised Roman Catholic children who will have a sibling attending the school at the time of
admission and resident in the catchment area.
3. Baptised Roman Catholic children resident in the catchment area.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
4. Baptised Roman Catholic children who will have a sibling attending the school at the time
of admission but are resident outside the catchment area.
5. Baptised Roman Catholic children who are resident outside the catchment area.
6. Other Looked After Children and previously Looked After Children.
7. Other children with a sibling attending the school at the time of admission.
8. Other children.
Notes:
a) The Governing Board is the admissions authority.
b) In the August of the year preceding their child’s entry into Reception all parents who have
expressed an interest in a school place will be sent a copy of the Bolton Council ‘Primary
Admission Booklet’ which gives details of the co-ordinated admissions arrangements. These are
available from Council offices, public libraries and primary schools.
c) Parents must complete a Bolton Council application form, either on line or a paper copy, and
express three preferences for primary school admission. The closing date for all applications is
October in the year preceding their child’s admission into Reception.
d) All applicants will be considered at the same time and after the closing date for admissions
th
which is the 15 January 2021.
e) Parents will be informed of decisions by Bolton Council by March/April. An offer of a place
does not guarantee a place for brothers and sisters in subsequent years.
f) A Looked After Child is a child who is (a) in the care of a Local Authority, or (b) being provided
with accommodation by a Local Authority in the exercise of their Social Services functions
(under section 22(1) of the Children Act 1989). A previously Looked After Child is one who
immediately moved on from that status after becoming subject to an adoption, residence or
special guardianship order.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
g) For a child to be considered as a Catholic evidence of Baptism or reception into the Catholic
Church is required. Written evidence of reception into the Catholic Church can be obtained by
referring to the Register of Receptions or in some cases a sub-section of the Baptismal Registers of
the Church in which the Rite of Reception took place.
h) Parents should check carefully whether they are resident within the catchment area of the
school.
i) The catchment area for St Brendan’s School is defined by the following boundaries: From the
point where Blackburn with Darwen, Bury and Bolton District boundaries meet (near Ramsbottom
Road), S along Bolton – Bury District boundary to and NW along Arthur Lane, Stitch-Mi-Lane, New
Lane, Blair Lane, Thicketford Road to and N along Bradshaw Brook across Jumbles Reservoir to the
Blackburn – Bolton District boundary and along that boundary to the point where it meets Bury
boundary.
j) It is the duty of governors to comply with regulations on class size limits at Key Stage One. The
Governing Board may exceed the regulations for twins and children from multiple births where
one of the children is the 30th child admitted.
k) If in any category there are more applications than places available, priority will be given on the
basis of straight line distance from home to school. This will be calculated using the LA
computerised measuring system from the centre point of the child’s address to the main entrance
of the school. In the event of distances being the same for two or more applicants where this
would be last place/s to be allocated, a random draw will be carried out in a public place.
l) Where a child lives with parents with shared responsibility, each for part of a week, the child’s
“permanent place of residence” will be determined as the address of the parent who normally has
responsibility for the majority of school days in a week.
m) Sibling is defined as a brother or sister, half brother or sister, adopted brother or sister, step
brother or sister, or the child of the parent/carer’s partner where the child for whom the school
place is sought is living in the same family unit at the same address as that sibling.
n) A waiting list for children who have not been offered a place will be kept and will be ranked
according to the Admission Criteria. Parents will be informed of their child’s position on the
waiting list which will not be operated for longer than the end of the Autumn Term
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
o) For ‘In Year’ applications received outside the normal admissions round and if places are
available then children qualifying under the published criteria will be admitted. Direct
application to the school can now be made under this heading. If there are places available but
more applicants than places then the published oversubscription criteria will be applied.
p) If an application for admission has been turned down by the Governing Body, parents can
appeal to an Independent Appeals Panel. Parents must be allowed at least twenty school days
from the date of notification that their application was unsuccessful to submit that appeal.
Parents must give reasons for appealing in writing and the decision of the Appeals Panel is
binding on all parties.
q) Parents can request that the date their child, if below compulsory school age, is admitted to
school is deferred to later in the school year or until the term when they reach compulsory
school age.
r) The Governing Board reserve the right to withdraw the offer of a school place where false
evidence is received in relation to baptism, sibling connections or place of residence.

CURRICULUM
In this booklet there is only space for brief descriptions of what is intended to be taught within the broad term
"Curriculum”.
In planning and implementing the Curriculum we endeavour to
provide an interesting and stimulating environment with a caring, secure atmosphere, in order to foster
self-discipline, good manners, mutual respect and tolerance, and where children may become happy and
well-balanced individuals
provide the basic skills which the children need for work and life by giving each of them a thorough grounding
in English and Mathematics appropriate to their age, aptitude and ability
make every effort to offer a broad balanced curriculum to all pupils regardless of ability, gender, religion or
ethnic origin. We follow the National Curriculum in all subjects. However, we continually look for ways to
adapt and modify our curriculum to suit the needs of our children.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
At the heart of all we teach must be a love of God, of His people and of His world. To foster this, we teach pupils
about the Roman Catholic Faith and the influence that the practice of this religion should have on every aspect of
their lives.
Such teaching is not only evident in religious lessons and in prayer and liturgy, but it underpins all we teach, across
the whole curriculum. It is evident each day in the classroom in the attitudes, responsibilities and skills we attempt
to foster in our children. It permeates all areas of the secular curriculum. We attempt to foster, in a Catholic
atmosphere, qualities of mind, body and spirit. A daily act of worship is held. We follow The ‘Come and See’
scheme as promoted by the Salford Diocese.
PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH AND CITIZENSHIP
Through an integrated approach, we endeavour to encourage the children to develop knowledge and
understanding of themselves, physically, emotionally, spiritually and socially; to foster attitudes of positive
self-esteem and personal responsibility; to develop understanding and respect for others and to enable the
children to form and maintain good relationships with others through the acquisition of sound social and life-skills.
We also try to encourage in the children a responsible attitude for the care of their local and world environment.
In such a programme, aimed at helping children to explore and understand their own growth and relationships, sex
education has an integral part. Although this area of education is primarily the right and duty of parents, and is
not a separate school subject, we believe that the school has a significant role. Therefore, in contexts appropriate
to the age and understanding of their children, teachers will introduce topics and aim to answer questions in a
simple, honest and sensitive manner. Children will always be encouraged to refer to their parents if it seems
appropriate. Our priority is a healthy, open and Christian approach. We follow the scheme ‘A Journey in Love’.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
At St Brendan's we recognise that each child is an individual and has the right to a broad, balanced and
differentiated curriculum. In line with the Mission Statement we are preparing our children to face the
opportunities, responsibilities and experiences which they will encounter. We aim to ensure that all children,
irrespective of ability, have full access to a differentiated and balanced curriculum, in order to develop their full
potential.
We endeavour to
identify and assess children with Special Educational Needs as soon as possible
plan for and provide appropriate support for identified children, liaising with parents and outside agencies
where applicable
monitor, record and evaluate the individual child's progress on a continuous basis, using our own recording
system
ensure a sympathetic and understanding attitude towards SEND children within school, avoiding anything which
identifies a child with a disability. Our Mission Statement should be seen in practice and evidenced by our
caring approach
INCLUSION
In accordance with the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice we are fully committed to the inclusion of all our
children in all school activities. Our Mission Statement should be seen in practice and evidenced by our caring
approach and acceptance of all pupils. All necessary work has been undertaken to provide open access to all areas
of the school.
EQUALITY
At St Brendan’s RC Primary School we are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for all
pupils, staff, parents and carers receiving services from the school, irrespective of race, gender, disability, faith or
religion or socioeconomic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those
connected to the school feel proud of their identity and able to participate fully in school life.
SPORTING AIM
[
At St Brendan's we aim to provide a rich and varied-programme of sport. This will include competitive and
non-competitive games which will ensure the children develop appropriate attitudes and skills. Whilst games is
taught as part of the PE National Curriculum, at St Brendan’s we offer children the opportunity to take part in a
variety of age appropriate extra-curricular activities. These are open to children regardless of gender or ability.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR
There are many activities which go beyond the classroom. Some of these are listed here
Football Gymnastics Dance
Choir Rounder's Gift Team
Netball School Council Rights Respecting School Steering Group
Music lessons are also available for a range of instruments. (Key Stage 2 only)
Twice a year we have a School Book Fair to promote and foster a love of books.
Year 5 have the opportunity to attend a day of retreat.
Year 6 are given the opportunity to participate in a Residential Activity
HOMEWORK
We place great emphasis on the importance of reading. Children take home a selection of books every day and a
dialogue is established between home and school by means of a Reading Record Notebook. We encourage and
expect children to read at home on a regular basis.
Children will be expected to do some learning homework, such as tables, spellings, mental maths and home work
passports. Children may also be asked to research a particular topic, or if necessary complete or repeat class
work. From Year 2 children are given homework on a regular basis.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
We believe that parents are vital partners in their child’s education
and we encourage open communication and close working
relationships between parents and staff
Parent-teacher meetings are held twice a year giving parents
the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress with the
teacher and to look at examples of their work. Of
course, parents are welcome to meet with the teacher
to discuss any questions or concerns they may have, but
please remember, first thing in the morning may not be the
best time as teachers are preparing for the day.
At the beginning of the autumn term, parents are invited to a
‘meet the teacher’ meeting at the school. This enables parents
to be briefed on the routines for the coming year and to ask
questions about the transition.
In some year groups a meeting with all parents will be held to
discuss a single topic e.g. reading, a residential trip or
the sacramental programme.
Working with Parents
Parent volunteers: At St Brendan’s we have parent volunteers
in the classrooms helping with a wide range of tasks,
from listening to children read to getting their hands dirty with
glue and junk modelling! Some parents like to offer help on a
regular basis, others on school trips. Whatever help parents
can offer is gratefully accepted and highly appreciated.
We believe that parents are vital partners in their
child’s education and we encourage open communication and
close working relationships between parents and staff.
Parents and family are invited into school to watch regular
events such as Share & Shine Assemblies, Masses hosted by
each year group, School productions and sports days. We also
arrange a variety of fundraising events that the whole family
are welcome to attend.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
Written Communication
Fortnightly newsletters are sent home
and contain information about current events, dates
for diary, new developments and celebrating achievements.
Communication
Curriculum overviews for each year group are sent home each
term.
In addition, letters are sent home via the children, for events
in and out of school and to provide /request information
when particular changes are necessary.
Parents will also receive written communications through
email or text messages.
Annual Reports
An annual report is sent home with your child in the second
half of the summer term. This will contain a detailed account
of your child’s progress.
If parents have any concerns they can make an appointment to
discuss the report with the class teacher via the school office.
Parents also receive a individual assessment summary
in January each year to your child’s current attainment and
progress in reading, writing and maths.
Digital Communication
We use a variety of digital ways to keep parents informed. Our
web site has a vast array of information about the school. You
can download and access past letters, look at the
school calendar and catch up with the latest news.
Our school website is www.st-brendan.bolton.sch.uk
We are also on Twitter and Facebook. Like our page to receive
regular up to date information.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
SAFEGUARDING
St Brendan’s is committed to safeguarding and promoting the
welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this
Pupil Welfare & Support
commitment. We work hard to maintain an environment where
children feel safe and secure.
Because of day-to-day contact with children, schools are
particularly well placed to observe outward signs of abuse, changes
in behaviour or failure to develop. Parents should be aware
therefore that where it appears to a member of staff that a child
may have been abused, the school is required, as part of the local
Child Protection Procedures, to report their concerns to the Social
Services Department immediately.
To view our Safeguarding policy in full please visit the school
website.

MEDICAL INFORMATION
If a pupil has a serious or recurring medical problem, it is advisable
for a note to be made on the child’s records. There is a section on
the admissions form for the insertion of necessary information,
which will of course be confidential.
MEDICINES IN SCHOOL
It is obviously very dangerous for children to bring any medicines
into school. Only medicine which is prescribed by the doctor for
MORE than three doses can be given at school. However, if a
parent or other family member is available, they are welcome to
come to school, at a convenient time, to administer the medicine
themselves. If medication must be administered in school then in
ALL cases an authorisation form should be completed. Forms are
available at the school office and must be completed before
medicine can be left in school. There are some medical conditions
(e.g. asthma) which require children to take medication
regularly. Please make sure that the class teacher is fully aware of
this situation and that any medication is given in at the School
Office (clearly marked with name and dosage). Please DO NOT send
your child to school with any unprescribed medication, throat
lozenges etc.
Love Life, Love Learning. Achieve together in God’s Love.
LUNCHTIME
The school has its own kitchen and meals of a high quality are
cooked on the premises. Menus adhere to National Nutritional
Guidelines. If you choose to send your child with a packed lunch,
please do not send sweets, crisps, glass bottles, fizzy drinks or
flasks containing hot liquid.
HEALTHY EATING
We have operated a Healthy Eating policy for several years. If
children wish to bring snacks to school for morning break, this
must be a piece of fruit or raw vegetables. Chocolates, sweets,
cereal bars and crisps are not allowed. Fresh fruit is provided each
day for Infant children.
It is important that children drink plenty of water as it helps them
to think better. We encourage all children to bring still,
unflavoured water in a clear plastic bottle with their name on, to
keep on their table during lessons.
UNIVERSAL INFANT FREE SCHOOL MEAL
Pupil Welfare & Support
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will be entitled to a
free school meal under the Universal Infant Free School Meal
scheme, however St Brendan’s RCP School is entitled to receive
additional funding if your family income is below £16190 per year
or you, or your partner, is in receipt of certain benefits.
The additional money school will receive is available from central
government for every child who is entitled , as per above. It is
therefore important to sign up for statutory free school meals so
that the school receives the money to which it is entitled. This
additional funding is used to provide valuable support like extra
tuition, additional teaching staff or after school activities. For more

BEHAVIOUR
We believe that children learn best in a well-organised, calm and
secure environment where purposeful and self-disciplined

behaviour is expected. We want every child in our school to feel
confident, happy and safe. As a caring catholic school we have the
highest of expectations in terms of learning, behaviour and
attitudes, and encourage our children to develop similar beliefs in
their own potential, together with pride in their achievement. We
want our children to have self-belief, resilience, perseverance and
teamwork skills and to use these qualities to help lead to progress,
achievement and success.
As teachers we are concerned, not only for the educational
progress, but also for the personal and social development of your
child. We try to combine high expectations with a sympathetic
approach. We expect a high standard of discipline and sensible
behaviour from our children. This is reinforced by praise and
encouragement. However, sometimes, problems do arise and we
then seek to involve parents at an early stage, rather than leave it
until later.
ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
Our School attendance for 2019/20 (1 Sep 19 to 1 Mar 20) was
above local and national levels at 97.0%.
Excellent attendance and punctuality are expected of all pupils.
They are essential for children to fulfil their potential at school. If your
If your child is unable to attend school for any reason please
telephone the school office on the morning of the first day of
absence. You do not need to contact the school again unless your
child’s symptoms change. If your child has sickness or diarrhoea we
ask that he/she does not return to school for 48 hours as this type
of illness can be very infectious. Any unexplained absences are
marked as unauthorised. To encourage high levels of attendance,
certificates are awarded to children at the end of the Autumn,
Spring and Summer term for 100% attendance and also for 100%
attendance over the school year.
Children who need to leave the school during the day for an
appointment must be collected from the main entrance and signed
out by a responsible adult. Please send a copy of your appointment

promptly to ensure a positive start to their learning. Please ensure
your child is not late for school. Children who arrive late are asked
to report to the school office and be signed in by an accompanying
adult. All late attendance is recorded.
HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
From 1 September 2013 new DfE regulations came into force
regarding leave of absence for children from school. The current
law does not give any entitlement to parents to take their child on
holiday during term time. Any application for leave must be in
exceptional circumstances and the Head Teacher must be satisfied
that the circumstances warrant the granting of leave. The School’s
Attendance Policy is available on our website.
SCHOOL NURSE
Nurses from the Local Health Service regularly visit the school,
undertaking sight, hearing and other tests, and are available to
preform health checks on request. Parents are informed about any
Pupil Welfare & Support
matter requiring attention and will be given support and advice.
]
CHARGING OR REMISSION POLICY
Parents may be asked to provide a voluntary contribution to help
meet the cost of class visits or outings, theatre groups and other
activities. Pupils will not be excluded from these activities if no
contribution is received, but in the event of not receiving adequate
contributions, such events as identified above may have to be
cancelled. Parents of pupils wishing to join the gymnastics club or
take music tuition, must make a financial commitment for the full
academic year. We are unable to accommodate mid-year
cancellations, changes or refunds.
