1995 was an interesting season for us in North 1,
finishing comfortably mid table as many bigger clubs
had a tilt at professionalism. It was always good to
get a win over our local rivals from across the Tees
and this victory was part of a 8 match winning streak.
Under Paul’s leadership the club won 20 of the 31
games played and lost to Blaydon in the Semi Final
of the Durham Cup. Middlesbrough are now 6th in
Yorkshire 1.

This season was to be our last season in North 1
(now called Northern Premier which Billingham
compete in). It was to be a long season, with most
clubs having a splattering of paid players from the
South Sea Islands. Out of 21 league games we won 4,
with only Northern finishing below us. Two familiar
faces finished in the top two places- Mowden Park
and Blaydon, both attracting players from various
North East clubs with their cash family focused rugby
environment. Sheffield are 15th in National 2 North.

This was our first year in Durham & Northumberland 1
(and we have never left since!). It took a while for the
team to get used to the new league, and even longer
to adjust to the new shirts that had been purchased
that summer. Weighing 15kg each, they certainly
added bulk to the forward pack but became a real
issue when it rained. Which is did.
Tony Traynor, try scorer on this day was a new signing
from the Army. Everyone got quite excited when
we heard we were signing a 20 stone prop from the
Armed Forces. Then Scouse Tony turned up wearing
gloves and that was that. Great lad though. Ryton are
9th in DN2.

How was London? How are you finding working with Mr Howe?
Yeah it was great to catch up with the GF down there. The All Schools project is great to be involved in.

Charlie was upset to miss the game against Gosforth as well It’s challenging. For a couple of seasons Ben has struggled
but he had his reasons. It didn't go all his own way though to pay his subs but Service Squad (Tom, Rhys, Charlie and
as he left his washbag at Woolley Edge services. Luckily he me) would love to see him back challenging for a place in
the 1st team. We need to raise £12 every month to cover his
subscriptions but it is hard to find donors these days with
so many great causes about. It doesn't help that Ste Taylor
keeps running a blind card to try find a cure for gout. We are
hoping that if we raise £6 per month he will match fund it
but he is quite stubborn.

Looking forward to the next few games?
We have some cracking games coming up but I am most
looking forward to the Medicals away game in December.
There was talk of a bus trip but the Service Squad have
already made plans. Tom has booked us all to go to
Diggerland in Durham before the game which should be
epic. I have always admired JCB’s for their hard work and
determination and hopefully a few hours of digging will give
us the motivation we need for the game afterwards.

THE GOOD PLAYERS CODE

Players should be encouraged to:
1. Recognise and appreciate the efforts made by coaches, parents, match officials and administrators in
providing the opportunity to play the game and enjoy the rugby environment.
2. Understand the values of loyalty and commitment to adults and team mates.
3. Recognise that every player has a right to expect their involvement in rugby to be safe and freefrom all
types of abuse.
4. Understand that if an individual or group of players feel they are not being treated in a manner that is
acceptable, then they should tell an adult at the Club or the club’s welfare officer.
5. Play because they want to do so, not to please coaches or parents.
6. Remember that skill development, fun and enjoyment are the most important parts of the game.
7. Be attentive at all training and coaching sessions.
8. Work equally hard for themselves and their team - both will then benefit.
9. Recognise good play by all players on their team and by their opponents.
10. Be a sportsman - win with dignity, lose with grace.
11. Play to the IRB Laws of the Game and accept, without question, all referees’ decisions even if they
appear to make a mistake.
12. Control their emotions. Verbal or physical abuse of team mates, opponents, coaches, match officials or
spectators is not acceptable.
13. Treat all players as they would like to be treated themselves. Do not interfere with, bully or take
advantage of any player.

THE GOOD SPECTATORS CODE

Spectators Should:
1. Act as positive role models to all players.
2. Be familiar with, and abide by, the RFU Child Protection Guidance in relation to verbal and emotional
abuse.
3. Respect guidance from the Club with regard to spectator behaviour.
4. Remember children play sport primarily for their own enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
5. Acknowledge good individual and team performance from all players irrespective of the team in which
they play.
6. Respect match officials’ decisions, even if they appear to make a mistake – remember, they are
volunteers providing an opportunity for players to play rugby.
7. Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials or fellow spectators: such behaviour can create
a negative environment for players and their behaviour will often reflect this.
8. Acknowledge effort and good performance rather than ‘to win at all costs’.
9. Verbally encourage all players in a positive manner, shouting ‘for’, not ‘at’, the players.
10. Encourage all players irrespective of their ability - never ridicule any individual players, regardless of
the team in which they play.
