PAUL NORMAN LEE
There can be few more decorated players in North East Club Rugby

It just wasn’t to be. Do I regret making the move?
Occasionally I think about how things might have been
different, but then I open the 15m long sliding doors on the
back of my Fairfield mansion which lead onto a beautiful
deck and landscaped garden and think it was worth the
sacrifice.
Any closer to the much hyped table tennis game
against Dan Phinn?
Dan has been shouting his mouth off for a few months
about how he would be able to beat me in a game of ping
pong. He thinks winning a competition around the pool
in Magaluf carries credibility. What he doesn’t realise that
when you sign up to join Cleveland Fire Brigade they give
you a whiff-whaff bat with your uniform. I have pretty
much been a professional ping pong athlete for nearly
30 years. The Cleveland Fire Brigade Watch League is
regarded as the strongest outside of Asia and we aren’t
allowed to play civilians in the UK even if we wanted to.
Tell us about the acting?
I suppose this an area of my life that people, particularly
the younger crowd, don’t know much about. I was in the
first four series of the popular ITV series London’s Burning
playing an officer named Colin. It allowed me to combine
my two passions- acting and saving lives. In the end the
travelling to and from London became too much and I had
to leave but I still keep in touch with the blue watch lads.
After leaving I got in touch with a few of the guys I
knew who were working on Heartbeat. I wrote to them
suggesting I manage a newly formed Aidensfield Fire
Station but I never heard back from them. I tried to stay
involved in the industry- treading the boards as The Giant
in Jack and the Beanstalk at Billingham Forum in 1994 but
once you are out the loop they soon forget about you.
How do you see the club progressing in the next few
years?
There is a positive buzz about the club. We aren’t where
we would like to be in the league but we are blooding
youngsters which is something that hasn’t happened here
enough for the best part of 15 years. The junior section is
thriving proving that the move from Norton has been a
huge success. There is a clear pathway for players now we
are running two Colts sides.

WELCOME TO SOUTH SHIELDS WESTOE
A warm welcome to the players and supporters of the Westoe club from
South Shields who are making their second visit to Grangefield. They added
the “ South Shields” prefix to their name last season.
Last season we managed to sneak home at Grangefield by 39-30 in November but went down at Westoe by 24-0 in
April. Earlier this season we lost 36-26 at Westoe.
Prior to that he last time we played each other was just over five years ago on 14 April 2010 - a Wednesday night
in the quarter final of the Durham Cup at Station Road. At that time Westoe proudly sat in the upper echelons of
National North Two – fifth place in the fourth tier of English rugby. We were (and still are) at level seven. We put up
a good account of ourselves before they ultimately progressed by 31-16.
Since we were both in the North One East league together in season 2004/05, our fortunes moved in distinctly
different directions. They were promoted twice in the next four seasons and we were relegated the season after,
yet here we are over ten seasons later- playing each other again!
We have had some entertaining league clashes with Westoe over the years and I remember the thrilling one in
April 2005 when we were both in North 1 East (level 6) and we managed to sneak a last minute win 27-24 -courtesy
of Jeremy Good- when Westoe were really flying and due to be promoted. They had also been in the final of the
National Intermediate Cup at Twickenham, albeit losing to Morley. Following several seasons in North One (level
5) they were promoted to National 2 North where the spent a few seasons before returning to North One. Sadly
they were twice relegated again and now find themselves back at level 7 in DN1 where they are doing very well
currently lying in third place.
Before leagues were introduced in 1988 we used to play on a Boxing Day in a “friendly” game.
I remember getting my nose broken on one of our Boxing Day encounters in 1979 at Station Road (courtesy
of “Slats”) and it bled til New Years Day, when we played West Hartlepool. Most people on Teesside have their
septums ruined by “certain substances”, sadly mine was the result of nothing more illicit than a darn good
backhander! He did apologise afterwards though.

Stockton RFC v Westoe RFC - Saturday 3rd February 2018
THE GOOD PLAYERS CODE
Players should be encouraged to:
1. Recognise and appreciate the efforts made by coaches, parents, match officials and administrators in
providing the opportunity to play the game and enjoy the rugby environment.
2. Understand the values of loyalty and commitment to adults and team mates.
3. Recognise that every player has a right to expect their involvement in rugby to be safe and freefrom all
types of abuse.
4. Understand that if an individual or group of players feel they are not being treated in a manner that is
acceptable, then they should tell an adult at the Club or the club’s welfare officer.
5. Play because they want to do so, not to please coaches or parents.
6. Remember that skill development, fun and enjoyment are the most important parts of the game.
7. Be attentive at all training and coaching sessions.
8. Work equally hard for themselves and their team - both will then benefit.
9. Recognise good play by all players on their team and by their opponents.
10. Be a sportsman - win with dignity, lose with grace.
11. Play to the IRB Laws of the Game and accept, without question, all referees’ decisions even if they
appear to make a mistake.
12. Control their emotions. Verbal or physical abuse of team mates, opponents, coaches, match officials or
spectators is not acceptable.
13. Treat all players as they would like to be treated themselves. Do not interfere with, bully or take
advantage of any player.
THE GOOD SPECTATORS CODE
Spectators Should:
1. Act as positive role models to all players.
2. Be familiar with, and abide by, the RFU Child Protection Guidance in relation to verbal and emotional
abuse.
3. Respect guidance from the Club with regard to spectator behaviour.
4. Remember children play sport primarily for their own enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
5. Acknowledge good individual and team performance from all players irrespective of the team in which
they play.
6. Respect match officials’ decisions, even if they appear to make a mistake – remember, they are
volunteers providing an opportunity for players to play rugby.
7. Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials or fellow spectators: such behaviour can create
a negative environment for players and their behaviour will often reflect this.
8. Acknowledge effort and good performance rather than ‘to win at all costs’.
9. Verbally encourage all players in a positive manner, shouting ‘for’, not ‘at’, the players.
10. Encourage all players irrespective of their ability - never ridicule any individual players, regardless of
the team in which they play.
