#Article 1: About Sringeri Jagadgurus.
The Hoary Guru-Shishya Parampara

सदाशिवसमारम्ां ि्कराचा्मय ््माम ् ।
अ्मदाचा्य प्नय ्ां वनदॳ गुुपरमपराम ् ॥

Obeisance unto the hoary Guru Parampara, beginning from Lord Sri Sadashiva upto the present
Acharya with Sri Shankaracharya in middle.

In our Indian tradition, a very high position has been accorded to the Guru. Without the grace of the
Guru, no one can attain fulfilment of the purpose of life. We all desire Moksha, and the sole means to its
attainment is Jnana (knowledge). The Veda says: “It is only by knowing the Supreme Brahman that one
attains immortality. There is no other path”.

How can that knowledge be obtained by us? Can it be got by perusal of texts? No, this knowledge can
be procured only from a Guru. In the Upanishads, we hear of holy one’s going to Gurus who are well
versed in the scriptures and established in the Supreme and making a request of the form, “O Guru!
Please impart knowledge to me”. Even though the Rishis seeking knowledge may have been scholarly, it
is certain that their acquisition of knowledge was solely dependent on their seeking it from a Guru. Only
that knowledge which is obtained from the lotus mouth of the Guru is potent. Sans a Guru, no matter
how many texts we may delve into, we cannot attain that knowledge. There is a hoary tradition
everywhere which can be learnt only from the Guru.

(Given above the Excerpts from the English translation of Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha
Mahaswamiji Anugraha Bhashanam )

PROTECTION OF COW

DISCOURSE BY HH
PUJYASHRI CHANDRASEKHARENDRA

SARASWATHI MAHASWAMIGAL ON 12 JAN. 1933

Protection of cow is a dharma that can be performed by people of all
communities in the world. It is a dharma that can be carried out by people
of all the four varnas and other communities. In addition to our Hindus,
Buddhists and Jainas too have been engaged in rearing and protecting the
cow. All animals other than the cow feed their milk to their young ones
and protect them; that too for a short time. But in the case of the cow, she
gives her milk to anyone and protects him till the end of her life. With
such considerations in view, it is said in Sastras that the cow should be
protected at all costs. In all Vedic rituals it is the practice to say

"ग८रा मणॳ्् ् ि्ु म ्ु नि््म"् - "Gobrahmanebhyah Subhamastu

Nityam" - "May cows and brahmanas be always happy". Here the cow is mentioned first. If the

cow is comfortable, the entire world will be happy. It is because all people gain comfort from the

cow, worship of cow has been accorded importance. It is to be noted that the cow has abundance

of milk such that after satisfying the need of her calf, she is able to feed other people with

milk. No other animal has this trait.

When Jainas (Samanas) rose against Vedic religion and troubled people in a big way in Madurai,

the minister Kulachiraiyar and queen Mangaiyarkkarasiyar of the Pandyan king prayed to Sri
Tirugnanasambandhamurthy Swamigal to rescue the Vedic religion. Huge philosophical debates
ensued between Sri Tirugnanasambandhamurthy and the Jainas; the latter were defeated in
argument. Then both parties vowed to write down on separate palm leaves that their religion
alone was true and to float the palm leaves in the river Vaigai. It was agreed that whichever leaf
swims against the river current conveys the true religion. Sri Tirugnanasambandhar wrote the
'Vazhthu Padigam' (Song of Benediction) on his palm leaf; this song had as its first line 'Vaazhga
Andanar Vaanavar Aan inam'. His palm leaf swam against the water current for ten miles and
reached the shore at a place called 'Tiruvedagam'. The deity there is known as 'Patrika
Parameswara'; Patrika is leaf and as the leaf was washed ashore at that place, the Lord got that
name. The script in the palm leaf says' Aaninam vaazhga'- 'May the breed of cows live long'. As
the cow has such distinction, it is necessary for everyone to worship her.

Though all communities follow dharmas in general, there is a special dharma enjoined on each

community. As regards the dharmas to be performed by Vaisyas, Bhagavan Sri Krishna has

mentioned them in a verse in Bhagavad Gita - "कृ षषग९र ्वाणण््ं वॴ््कमम व्ावजम"् - "Krishi
Gourakshyavaanijyam vaisyakarma svabhavajam". Bhagavan has prescribed three activities for
Vaisyas. The first one, 'Krishi' means agriculture, ploughing the field and raising crops for
people's consumption. The second is protection of cow. The third is trade and commerce and
helping people through them. This would mean that Vaisya's duty is to increase agricultural
output and help living beings through that. Vaisya should also take care of the cow with such

5 | BTBS e-KARUNA

nutrition that her milk is not only adequate for her calf, but is also available for the
public. Similarly, another important duty of Vaisyas is engaging in trade, viz. to fetch articles
like wheat, asafetida etc. from long distances, store them and help people by selling those articles
to them. If a person has lakhs of rupees, but lives in a desert devoid of foodgrains, he can not
sustain himself just with his money. Similarly in a place where paddy is grown in plenty, one can
not live with just paddy alone without other articles. Hence trade consists in gathering articles
from different places and selling them at a particular point useful to the public. This is an
important dharma for Vaisyas. They should not think that trading is sinful. If a brahmana leaves
the mundane world and lives in a forest as a Sanyasi and then starts earning money, it is a
sin. We should not think that traders engage in trade just for making profit. When there is hartal
for a week and shops remain closed, people suffer very much without getting the necessary
articles. Hence trade is meant for common good and not for individual profit. Vaisyas should not
conduct trade with profit in view, but with the thought that they are doing a duty ordained by
Bhagavan and with prayerful attitude. I spoke on Go Puja today because tomorrow is the day of
Go Puja and many Vaisyas are assembled here. We should all perform dharma as instructed by
Bhagavan Sri Krishna.People should also purchase articles from Asthika traders and not
atheists. If you buy from atheists, the profit would be used for wrong purposes. Trading has been
ordained as a special duty for Vaisyas. Hence Vaisyas should engage in the three activities
ordained by Bhagavan, viz. agriculture, cow protection and trade, with devotion to Iswara and be
the recipients of His Grace.

#Article 2
A Devotee’s Offering

Sri Mahasannidhanam Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji, the 35th Jagadguru
Shankaracharya in the unbroken lineage of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, had an innate ability
to explain even complex topics lucidly through apt parables from the Puranas, Itihasas and
other scriptures. On the eve of the Aradhana of Sri Mahasannidhanam, published below is one
among the many parables elucidated by the Mahaswamiji expounding an aspect devotion of a
devotee towards the Omniscient Lord.
A devotee decided to offer something to the Lord. ‘What should I give?’, was the query that
perturbed him. He cogitated ‘God is known by the name Pashupati, the Lord of creatures.
Hence it would be proper to gift Him an animal. What is the animal that I should submit unto
Him?’ After due thought, he told Shiva, ‘I have with me a cow which is none other than my
devotion towards You.’ He assumed that Shiva would ask, ‘What is the characteristic of your
cow?’ So, he clarified, ‘it gives unlimited joy as its milk.’
‘How ofter does it give milk?’ Shiva might wonder. Hence, the man said ‘It gives milk again
and again’. Taking, ‘Where will it dwell?’ to be the Lord’s next query, he stated ‘It will
dwell in the cow-shed that is Your feet’. He felt that the Lord would desire the answer to the
question. ‘Does it have a calf?’ Therefore, he pointed out, ‘It has a calf, Virtue’. ‘O Lord!
You are Pashupati. This is the sole cow that I possess. Please take it and protect it’.
Concluded the devotee.
In reality God needs nothing whatsoever from a devotee. However, whatever the devotee
offers with love, He accepts and bestows grace. Lord Krishna has said —

परं प्ु पं फलं ्८्ं ्८ मॳ ्त््ा र््छन्।
्दहं ्त््पु ृ्म्िाशम र््ा्मिः॥

‘When anyone offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or some water, I accept that
devotionally presented gift of the pure-hearted person’.

 Maharshi Dayanand Sarswati Jayanthi

Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati authored more than 70 works in all, including a 14 volume
explanation of the six Vedangas, 9 volumes of Rigveda Bhasya and 4 volumes of Yajurved
Bhasya. His most important and referred works are Satyarth Prakash, Sanskarvidhi, Rigvedadi
Bhashya Bhumika, Rigved Bhashyam (up to 7/61/2) and Yajurved Bhashyam.

Maharshi completed his vedic studies under Swami Virjanand in 1864. Thereafter, he travelled
across India till 1874 AD for Vedic propagation and learning. Maharshi’s first major authorship
was Panchmahayajya Vidhi in 1874 AD. The Paropkarini Sabha located in the Indian city of
Ajmer was founded by the Swami himself to publish and preach his works and Vedic texts in
1882.

Maharshi passed away in 1883; at that time his Rig Veda Bhasyam was only more than half way.
But within his short span of 10 years of work, he created a vast, deep and research based literature
on the Vedic lore.

 Vijaya Ekadashi

Ekadashi Tithi Begins = 18:02 on 4/Mar/2016
Ekadashi Tithi Ends = 17:11 on 5/Mar/2016

Parana means breaking the fast. Ekadashi Parana is done after sunrise on next day of Ekadashi
fast. It is necessary to do Parana within Dwadashi Tithi unless Dwadashi is over before sunrise.
Not doing Parana within Dwadashi is similar to an offence.
Parana should not be done during Hari Vasara. One should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before

10 | BTBS e-KARUNA

breaking the fast. Hari Vasara is first one fourth duration of Dwadashi Tithi. The most preferred
time to break the fast is Pratahkal. One should avoid breaking the fast during Madhyahna. If due
to some reasons one is not able to break the fast during Pratahkal then one should do it after
Madhyahna.
At times Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days. It is advised that Smartha with
family should observe fasting on first day only. The alternate Ekadashi fasting, which is the
second one, is suggested for Sanyasis, widows and for those who want Moksha. When alternate
Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.
Ekadashi fasting on both days is suggested for staunch devotees who seek for love and affection
of Lord Vishnu

 Maha Shivaratri

Chaturdashi Tithi Begins = 13:20 on 7/Mar/2016
Chaturdashi Tithi Ends = 10:34 on 8/Mar/2016

Shivaratri is great festival of convergence of Shiva and Shakti. Chaturdashi Tithi during Krishna Paksha
in month of Magha is known as Maha Shivaratri according to South Indian calendar. However according
to North Indian calendar Masik Shivaratri in month of Phalguna is known as Maha Shivaratri. In both
calendars it is naming convention of lunar month which differs. However both, North Indians and South
Indians, celebrate Maha Shivaratri on same day.

Vrat Vidhi – One day before Shivaratri Vratam, most likely on Trayodashi, devotees should eat only one
time. On Shivaratri day, after finishing morning rituals devotees should take Sankalp (सकं ्प) to observe
full day fast on Shivaratri and to take food next day. During Sankalp devotees pledge for self-
determination throughout the fasting period and seek blessing of Lord Shiva to finish the fast without any
interference. Hindu fasts are strict and people pledge for self-determination and seek God blessing before
starting them to finish them successfully.

On Shivaratri day devotees should take second bath in the evening before doing Shiva Puja or visiting
temple. Shiva Puja should be done during night and devotees should break the fast next day after taking
bath. Devotees should break the fast between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi to get
maximum benefit of the Vrat. According to one contradictory opinion devotees should break the fast only
when Chaturdashi Tithi gets over. But it is believed that both Shiva Puja and Parana (पारणा) i.e. breaking
the fast should be done within Chaturdashi Tithi.
Shivaratri puja can be performed one time or four times during the night. The whole night duration can be
divided into four to get four Prahar (रहर) to perform Shiva Puja four times. Drikpanchang.com lists all
four Prahar durations for staunch Shiva devotees who perform Shiva Pujan four times in the night. We
also list Nishita time when Lord Shiva appeared on the Earth in the form of Linga and the time window to
break the fast on next day.
Shivaratri is also spelled as Shivratri, Shivarathri and Sivaratri.

 Partial Solar Eclipse in Bangalore On 9th March 2016

Eclipse would start from Sunrise - 06:30:40
Eclipse End Time - 06:47:33
11 | BTBS e-KARUNA

Eclipse Duration - 00 Hours 16 Mins 53 Secs

 180th Birth Anniversary of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa- March 10th 2016

Ramakrishna (1836-1886 C.E.) was a famous Saint in the 19th century India. He was born on 18 February
1836 into a very poor but devoutly religious Brahmin family in the village of Kamarpukur, Hooghly
district of West Bengal, India. He became a priest of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple, dedicated to the
goddess Kali. He is famously known as Ramakrishna Paramahamsa among his devotees.
He was married to Sarada Devi who later became his spiritual counterpart. Swami Vivekananda was one
of his famous disciples. In honor of his Guru, Swami Vivekananda founded Ramakrishna Math which
works for the welfare of others and spread the spiritual movement known as Ramakrishna Movement
worldwide. Belur Math is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Mission.
According to Hindu lunar calendar it was Dwitiya, Phalguna, Shukla Paksha, Vikram Samvat 1892 when
Shri Ramakrishna was born. Each year the birth anniversary of Ramakrishna is celebrated as per Hindu
lunar calendar across all Ramakrishna Maths.

 Amalaki Ekadashi

Ekadashi Tithi Begins = 09:38 on 18/Mar/2016
Ekadashi Tithi Ends = 10:19 on 19/Mar/2016

Time - Phalguna Shukla Paksha Ekadashi is known as Amalaki Ekadashi. Amalaki Ekadashi falls
between Maha Shivaratri and Holi. Currently it is observed in month of Ferbruary or March in
English calendar.
One should wait for Hari Vasara to get over before
breaking the fast.

Ekadashi fasting is suggested for Smartha it coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi fasting day.
Ekadashi fasting on both days is suggested for staunch devotees who seek for love and affection
of Lord Vishnu

 Holi on 23rd March

Holi is a religious festival celebrated by Hindus all over the world. Holi is considered as second
biggest festival on Hindu calendar after Diwali. Holi is also known as festival of Colors.
Places related to life of Lord Krishna are known as Braj regions. Holi rituals in Braj regions -
Mathura, Vrindavan, Gowardhan, Gokul, Nandagaon and Barsana - are the most famous one.

12 | BTBS e-KARUNA

The Lathmar Holi - the traditional Holi festivity in Barsana is world famous.
In most regions Holi festival is celebrated for two days. The first day is known as Jalanewali Holi -
the day when Holi bonfire is done. This day is also known as Chhoti Holi and Holika Dahan. Holika
Dahan is referred to Kama Dahanam in South India. The second day is known as Rangwali Holi - the
day when people play with colored powder and colored water. Rangwali Holi which is main Holi
day is also known asDhulandi or Dhulendi (धुल्डी). The other less popular pronunciations of
Dhulandi are Dhuleti, Dhulheti.
On first day bonfires are lit after sunset at Right Holika Dahan Muhurta. Main Holi day when people
play with colors is always next day of Holika Dahan or Holi bonfire. Next day in the morning people
play Holi with dry and wet colors. People are more willing and comfortable to play Holi with dry
colored powders which are known as Gulal. However many people feel that Holi celebrations are
incomplete without wet colors. Wet color is applied on the face and is made on the spot by mixing
little amount of water with dry colored powder. More enthusiastic Holi folk mix dry colored powder
in full bucket of water to drench complete body in wet color.

 386th Birth Anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji

Shivaji Bhonsle (1630-1680 C.E.) was a great warrior King of Marathas who established
the Maratha Empire. He was born in 1630 to Shahaji Bhonsle and Jijabai near the city of
Junnar in Pune district, Maharashtra. Shivaji Bhonsle is popularly known as Chhatrapati
Shivaji.

Scholars have two different opinions on the exact date of his birth. The one group propose
February 19, 1630 and the other proposes April 6, 1627 as the birth date of Chhatrapati
Shivaji.

The date of February 19, 1630 has been accepted as the birth anniversary of Shivaji
Jayanti by the government of Maharashtra. However, very few people realize that this
date is marked on Julian calendar and not on the Gregorian calendar currently used
throughout the world. We would like to quote from one of the articles in our archive -

"Whether the birth year of the Maratha hero is 1627 or 1630 is also a question that occupied
historians for long. However, while 1630 was determined as the birth year with the help of
historical documents, the question of birth date remained unanswered for long.

For a final word on the matter, the Maharashtra government set up a committee of historians in
1968. The committee, headed by M.N. Dixit, had as its members Babasaheb Purandare, Datto
Vaman Potdar, G.H. Khare, B.C. Bendre, N.R. Phatak and first chancellor of Kolhapur's Shivaji
University Appasaheb Pawar.
Together, they agreed on Falgun Vadya Tritiya as per the Hindu almanac and February 19 as per
the English calendar. The DF government last year announced that Shiv Jayanti would be
observed every year on February 19, which would be a state holiday. However, it also accepted
Falgun Vadya Tritiya, thus contributing to confusion.
Stressing the Sena's case for Falgun Vadya Tritiya, Mr Bal Thackeray has said that Lokmanya
Tilak had vouched for this date in a paper presented by him during the annual convention of the
Bharat Itihas Sanshodhan Mandal in 1916."
When drikpanchang checked Tritiya, Phalguna, Krishna Paksha, Vikram Samvat 1686 on
Gregorian calendar it came out to be March 1, 1630 which is equivalent to February 19, 1630 on
13 | BTBS e-KARUNA

Julian calendar.
The other proposed date for the birth of Shivaji is April 6th, 1627, which is equivalent to April
16, 1627on Gregorian calendar. This date when converted to Hindu date is very close to other
proposed Tithi of Dwitiya, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha, Vikram Samvat 1684.
