From Global Greens to KLGCC: A Conversation with Our New General Manager Today we have a special treat for all you golf enthusiasts and aspiring golf professionals out there. Joining us is the new General Manager of KLGCC, a seasoned golf management expert whose journey has taken him from summer jobs in high school to working with some of the top golf resorts around the world. He’s got stories from the icy greens of Canada to the scorching sands of Dubai, and now he’s here at KLGCC to share his incredible experiences and insights with us. So grab your clubs and get ready for a hole-in-one conversation! Let’s dive into the fascinating career of Adam Calver. We’re thrilled to have you on board and excited to hear more about your plans and vision for our club. Today, we want to get to know you better, and learn about the experiences that have shaped your journey. So, to kick things off… Can you tell us a bit about your career journey and how you ended up here? My golf career started as a summer high school job, it was a small 18 holes course where we worked in all departments. While working on the golf course maintenance team, I learned how to design and construct new golf holes. A few years later, I entered the hospitality industry working for Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. For several years, I spent my winter working in the retail industry at the ski resort while in the summer, I worked at Kananaskis Golf Course. The owners of the club convinced me to pursue my degree in Golf Management. They persuaded me to first learn how to maintain a golf course, then how to design and build it correctly, and finally how to operate, manage and market the course. I had great mentorship at a young age that set my career path to learn all areas of Golf Management rather than just jumping into one field. Over the last 27 years, I’ve worked in all areas of the golf industry, from design and development of clubs and resorts, course renovations, hosting events and developing golf destinations. So, it’s been a very vast career so far, and I’m excited to be here at KLGCC to build on my experience. So, you’ve been involved in golf from a young age. How did you first get started playing golf, and what were those early experiences like? I didn’t really start playing a lot until I was working at a golf course because the fee was free. When I was 12, I started caddying for my father and his friends. I’d often hit a few shots here and there on the course to learn the

game. Then, when I started working at a golf course, my colleagues and I started playing twice a week after work. We’d go out and play nine holes until we work our way out to play 36 holes on our days off. By that point, we were all hooked on the game. What attracted you to this role, and what are you most excited about in joining our team? KLGCC has a great reputation in the industry. It’s been around for decades, hosting professional events and has been an industry leader in Asia. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with this team as we enhance the overall prestige of the club and the golf course. We’re all very excited to execute our plans to elevate the East course as our objective is to align both the West and East courses as championship venues. Our goal is to ensure we have two equally exceptional golf courses at the same property. Hosting the LPGA Maybank Championship for the next few years also gives us a great opportunity to showcase what Malaysia has to offer when it comes to great championship golf. What were some of the most memorable roles or experiences you’ve had in the past few years? Most of my memorable experience was caddying for Sir Nick Faldo for the Par 3 round at the Masters. Aside from that, my most memorable experiences have involved overcoming hardships during golf course design and construction projects. Recently, developing and opening Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs in Canada was a true test of one’s grit and tenacity. Other projects such as working at Kananaskis, where we used to tent the greens and heat them with propane to grow bentgrass at minus 20 degrees and a few years later in Dubai when we were turning the desert into a forest to host the Race to Dubai tournament with the European Tour at Jumeirah Golf Estates. What do you think makes KLGCC stand out, and how can we make the most of that? KLGCC is an oasis in the middle of a major city in Asia, which is phenomenal. With almost 10 million people in the Kuala Lumpur greater area, these two golf courses serve as a sanctuary for nature in the city. We want to focus on being the place where people can escape, relax and reconnect with nature while playing golf. The facility has great potential for training juniors and paving the pathway for generations to come. KLGCC is a multi-generational golf community as well as a hub for other sports like tennis, squash, badminton and wellbeing. We’d like to start attracting the best trainers and coaches to work with us for each sport, so we can see those members enhance their skills. You play golf yourself. What’s your favorite golf memory or moment on the course? Something very unique about the game of golf is that amateur golfers can play the same venues as professionals. Unlike most professional sports where amateurs don’t have access to the championship venues, golf allows you to travel through time and walk in the footsteps of legend both past and present. You can test your skills against the greatest golfers in the world. KLGCC is reaching that level in Malaysia. The more championships we host, the more prestigious it becomes to play and then more our club attracts global golfers.

What part of being a GM do you enjoy the most? Usually leading the team, inspiring, and motivating my staff. That’s honestly the best part. Often, team members may not have a lot of confidence or experience, so there’s a lot of teaching and coaching involved. But once you helped them achieve a few victories or accomplishments, it’s amazing to see the team become more independent, proud and confident. They then start to venture out more on their own and take initiatives. That’s one of the parts of being a GM. As I get older, one of the things I’m most proud of is seeing my staff and associates, particularly interns, become managers, GMs, and superintendents. It’s something you don’t fully appreciate until you’ve been in the industry for a while, but seeing my staff become better managers than I was very rewarding. If you could host any major golf tournament at KLGCC, which one would it be and why? If we are thinking of the ultimate position that KLGCC could reach, we would be the host venue for an Asia Open, attracting the world’s greatest players. We currently have have the Maybank LPGA Championship, which is a step in the right direction. We want to focus on getting the East course renovated in 2025 as we complete the East course renovation, we’ll probably discuss what other events we should bring to the club in the future. The Maybank LPGA event is scheduled to stay here until 2027, but we want to start thinking beyond that and plan for the next five to ten years for the club’s future. What’s the best golf tip you’ve ever heard or given? We could all use a bit of advice! The best golf tip I’ve gotten? I actually used quite often over the years. Working with Sir Nick Faldo, I’ve had the opportunity to sit in on many of his clinics. He said, “If you’re trying to decide if you should chip or putt around the green, nine times out of ten, your worst putt is still better than your best chip.” I often remember that when I’m struggling with which shot to take around the green. For an amateur golfer, it’s definitely true that you should probably putt. Another great tip was from Jack Nicklaus about learning how to hit a driver. He said to learn how to hit it far, and then learn how to hit it straight. And from Ben Crenshaw, when discussing putting on slow greens, he said simply, “Hit it harder.” Last question, between the East and West courses at KLGCC, which one do you prefer and why? Right now, I think the East course has the most potential for unique character with its tighter fairways and water features there is a lot we can tweak. The 17th hole on the West course currently has a lot of my attention; it’s got a lot of potential. We might want to relocate the cart path to open up more of the waterway. On both courses, we want to focus on par threes, which are typically the crown jewels of a golf club, bunker positioning is critical for playing strategy and aesthetics. There’s a lot of opportunity here with the land’s good elevation changes and natural foliage. We want to focus on native trees and perhaps plant a few hundred more in certain areas to maintain that natural rainforest feel. The West course has the big championship views, elevated tees, and long drops to the fairways, which is always nice in golf. That wraps up our chat today. A huge thank you to our new General Manager Mr.Adam Calver for sharing his incredible journey and insights with us. It’s been fascinating to hear about your experiences from all around the globe and your exciting plans for KLGCC. We’re thrilled to have you on board and can’t wait to see what the future holds under your leadership. Stay tuned for more exciting updates from KLGCC and keep swinging for those greens! Until next time, take care and happy golfing!

There is a qigong saying “When the intent (yi) arrives, the qi (life force) arrives.” This means that the more your mind is focused on what you are doing, the more qi you can develop and control. So, what is qigong? It involves using exercises to optimize energy within the body, mind and spirit, with the goal of improving and maintaining health and well-being. Qigong has both psychological and physical components and involves the regulation of mind, breath, body movement and posture. When I first started learning qigong about a year ago, I was excited whenever we get to create the energy ball. I could feel the tingling sensation between my fingers much like what you see in the Kung Fu Panda or Dr. Strange movie. Energy balls are real! A “chi ball” is a concept that comes from certain Eastern philosophies and practices, particularly from traditional Chinese medicine, qigong, and various martial arts like Tai Chi. In these traditions, “chi” (also spelled “qi” or “ki”) refers to the vital energy that is believed to flow through all living things. A chi ball is essentially a ball of energy that practitioners imagine or visualize creating using their own life force or chi. It is not a physical object that can be seen or touched but rather a metaphysical concept used in energy work and healing practices like Reiki. In these practices, practitioners believe that they can manipulate and shape energy in their bodies or in the environment to form a ball like shape, which they call energy ball. The idea is that these energy balls can be used for various purposes such as healing or sending positive intentions to others. Personally for me I have always believed that energy breeds energy so it’s not such a bad thing altogether to practice qigong. Qigong is different from T’ai chi even though they are both ancient Chinese traditions that relieve stress and increase energy. T’ai chi is generally more complex because it involves a series of many moves. One t’ai chi form can take months to learn and a lifetime to master. Qigong is often one single move repeated over and over and usually focus on breathing. In a meditative state of mind-qigong, meditation and sound bath

“Qigong practice typically involves moving meditation, coordinating slow-flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing and a calm meditative state of mind.” In fact we love to practice meditation before Qigong. It is a practice in which an individual uses a technique such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought or activity-to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state. Grey matter has been shown to respond beautifully to meditation through the release of a protein called BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor) which stimulates the growth and protection of neurons in your brain. Regular meditation equals improvements in information processing. So what are you waiting for? Embark on a spiritual journey with us every Wednesday morning right here at the Drink Hut 1, East Course starting with meditation and Qigong followed by Hatha yoga and ending with a sound bath. Emerging research suggests sound therapy may lower stress hormones, improves mood and reduce pain. I promise you that you will sleep like a baby at night following these sessions- if you are not already falling asleep in class, that is. Datin Dr Norazlin Mokhtar G&A Fitness KLGCC

Golf isn’t just about birdies and bogeys—it’s a game rich with stories, characters, and moments that have transcended the fairways to leave a lasting mark on pop culture. From the big screen to the bookshelf and even in our favorite tunes, golf’s influence is everywhere, bringing its unique charm and wit along for the ride. Movies: When it comes to golf in cinema, it’s hard not to smile. “Tin Cup” (1996) takes us on a wild ride with Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy, a down-on-his-luck golf pro aiming for redemption at the U.S. Open. With Kevin Costner leading the way, this film serves up a winning combination of romance, humor, and heartfelt moments that will have you cheering from the sidelines. And who can forget the irreverent antics of “Happy Gilmore” (1996)? Adam Sandler’s portrayal of a hockey player-turned-golfer brings slapstick comedy and outrageous humor to the sport, proving that sometimes all it takes is a big swing and a bigger heart to make your dreams come true. Books: Dive into the world of golf literature, where every swing has a story. Michael Murphy’s “Golf in the Kingdom” is a mystical journey, combining fiction with deep philosophical musings about life and golf. For a real-world peek into the professional scene, John Feinstein’s “A Good Walk Spoiled” offers an insider’s view of the PGA Tour, packed with drama and behind-thescenes tales. These books not only celebrate the sport but also explore the human spirit and the love for the game. Music: Even in the world of music, golf makes its mark. Bing Crosby’s “Straight Down the Middle” is a classic, celebrating the joy of a perfect shot with Crosby’s signature charm. On the flip side, Kenny Loggins’ “I’m Alright” from the “Caddyshack” soundtrack brings an upbeat, rebellious energy that’s synonymous with the film’s carefree spirit. And let’s not forget Macklemore’s “Golf,” a fun, modern homage to the sport that shows even hip-hop can have a soft spot for the greens. From laugh-out-loud movies and thought-provoking books to toe-tapping tunes, golf’s presence in pop culture is a testament to its universal appeal. It’s more than just a game; it’s a source of inspiration, entertainment, and connection. So, next time you’re looking for a bit of golf magic, check out these pop culture gems and see the sport in a whole new light.
