What’s love got to do with it? When I was given the task to write about love in conjunction with Valentine’s Day in February I told myself what could I possibly wrote about love and exercise and their connection to one another when suddenly a picture of an elderly couple walking together into the sunset came into my mind. Of course we have to be healthy to be able to do that. First let’s hear a love story. It’s not a great one but it’s my story. About how a young medical student was wooed by a medical officer eight years older than her thus earning him the nickname cradle snatcher at the faculty. He would buy her flowers and little presents and they would spent hours on the phone despite just seeing each other before. After courting for one and a half years they got engaged before tying the knot when she was in her final year at medical school. A few years back there was a relaunching of the T.J Danaraj medical library in University Malaya where we first met. Upon finding out our story about how we used to be dating in the library the photographer asked us to re-enact the scene. One of the captions were she fell hook , line and sinker to his charms. Well she surely did! Back to exercise, when I was younger I didn’t really have the time to exercise. Maybe it’s because I was quite a book worm. My exercise was limited to dancing at the disco (Traq, Scandals and the likes) at that time. I wasn’t the school athlete either My husband on the other hand plays tennis in his university days. Now it’s golf in between his clinics and operating days I think it’s important to keep ourselves healthy physically and mentally. Luckily I started going to the gym after my third child is born. I fell in love with yoga and Pilates. I try to go to the gym at least three times a week. I recently started practicing yoga more regularly. It does make me feel good and I sleep better at night. “The other reason why we have to keep healthy is because Malaysia is an ageing population. According to the most recent estimates by DSOM, the composition of the population aged 65 years and over (old age) increased from 7.2% in 2022 to 7.4% in 2023, encompassing 2.5 million people, indicating that Malaysia is experiencing population ageing.”
We not only want to live long but healthy as well. “Exercise is by far the most potent longevity drug,” according to Peter Attia, M.D author of Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity. So how does exercise contribute to longevity? Besides being a natural anti- oxidant which is beneficial to vascular function exercise also results in other physiological changes that can help slow the aging process. Exercise can lessen the inflammatory effect on muscle and other tissues associated with aging e.g arthritis. “So what’s love got to do with it? It seems that loving someone and being loved in return not only make us happier, it also motivates us to take better care of our health, reduces our stress and extend our lifespan.” Studies have also shown that individuals who consume a diet rich in anti- oxidants, enjoy a rich social life, and constantly challenge their bodies and brains in pleasurable ways often live longer-and happier. Another example of correlation would be if your longevity was influenced by eating a healthy diet, keeping your weight at a healthy level, exercising and being socially connected you’re more likely to be in a happy, married relationship So to all lovebirds out there young or otherwise here’s wishing you a Happy Valentine’s Day!
