Let’s TRX it for the new year As an avid gym goer is there anything new you noticed at the KLGCC gym? Yes you are right, it’s the TRX! That yellow strap hanging from the wall next to the boxing standing punching bag. I would love to write about TRX to welcome the new year. Something new for all of us to explore and benefit from. No, it’s not The Exchange TRX Mall although it will be a nice place to visit. TRX is in fact a suspension system designed for your mobility and strength So let me tell you about the TRX – Total Resistance Exercises, a killer suspension training system crafted by a former U.S. Navy SEAL, Randy Hetrick. It’s all about using your own body weight to build strength, balance, flexibility, and core stability all at once. I got into it right away because, as Hetrick puts it, it’s not just for yoga and Pilates fans; it’s a game-changer for runners, cyclists, and anyone keen on upping their strength training game. A word of caution from Fabio Comana, a research scientist who states that suspension training may work for well-conditioned athletes and gymgoers who regularly train their core, however, it is potentially dangerous for those who haven’t built up their core But as with any other exercise it’s always wise to listen to your body and know your limit. You wouldn’t want to injure yourself while exercising, do you?

TRX Training enthusiasts claim it enhances mobility, stability, metabolic results, lean muscle development, and functional strength. Advocates emphasize the necessity of a strong core since TRX relies on body weight for strength building. Personally i was inspired by a petite TRX instructor with sculpted shoulders, I see it as the motivation to kickstart my own TRX journey. As I was struggling to find my balance, I looked at my instructor Farouk and told him that I should have done this when I was 40 years old. He looked back at me and said “Well you are 40 now, aren’t you?” If that’s not motivation enough I don’t know what is. Look out for our personal trainers at the gym Farouk, Joe or Aaron who are all certified TRX instructors. They will be more than happy to show you the ropes (pun intended!) So what new things have you learnt in 2023? Personally, for me I have enjoyed learning how to play Mahjong with Uyun, Qigong and meditation with our instructor Anna, boat paddle in the Datai bay (you do need core and arm strength to do this) which I attributed to the TRX lessons in the gym I had early on which is another first for me Next, I would love to learn pole dancing which requires a lot of core and arm strength as well. So back to TRX in the gym we go. As we write down the new things we would like to learn in 2024 here’s wishing everyone a fit and healthy new year, full of inspiration and motivation to make us a better person for everyone! Remember we are never too old to learn something new. By the way do you know that playing Mahjong can also prevent from getting dementia? Definitely a must to add to your list. Happy learning! Tee-rific Tales: Natasha Oon’s Golf Adventure! Welcome to the vibrant world of golf, where fairways meet dreams, and every swing tells a tale of dedication and triumph. We’re thrilled to bring you an exclusive interview with the fantastic Natasha Andrea Oon, the golf sensation. Amidst the lush greens and sunny vibes, Natasya spills the beans on her golfing rituals, idols, and moments on the course. Grab your clubs and join us for a swingin’ good time as we delve into the lively fairways with Natasya Oon! I’d say, for hole nine, if the pin is tucked on the right, don’t go for it. It’s a pin that is meant for you to aim for the middle of the green. On hole 10, it might be very tempting to try and head over the bunker on the right, but chances are you need to play it safe on the left side because there’s no real advantage in risking going into the right bunker if it’s not a full carry for you. Hole 2/11 is a tough hole because of the water on the left and the narrow fairway up to the green. On that hole, really stay on the fairway. Going into any of the bunkers will make it harder for you to par, especially if you enter a bunker hazard. The toughest pin is tucked on the left back corner. For that pin, you just have to stay on top of the hill on the right and putt down. It tests your short putt because you probably will have a five-footer for par, even if you have great distance control on a downhill putt. On the par threes, I think hole number four is a birdie-able hole, but it’s more important to carry the extreme downslope before the green. Do not mess with that downslope. The WEST course is tough, but I’d say to play the course at its own game, it’s best to go to places where you know you can recover if you miss-hit it. Before you hit a shot, make sure to gauge your expectations and have some leeway for mistakes. That way, if you mess up, you can be slightly challenged with a comeback to save your score, but not put yourself in jeopardy of blowing your card. Always try to stay on the fairways and greens, and if you can’t stay on the greens, stay around the green. Chances are pars are just right around the corner. The KLGCC course is known for its challenging layout. How did you approach specific holes, and were there any particular challenges you faced during your rounds at KLGCC?

I have a few pre-tournament rituals, and one of them is to eat a filling, satisfying breakfast. Because I know how significant the day is and how much I will burn out there, I make an effort to satisfy my breakfast by loading up my plate with eggs, bread, and coffee. I try to increase my protein intake on those days so that my energy tends to stay the same throughout the day. Knowing that I am nourished makes me feel ready to play. I sometimes write quotes on my yardage book cover, on one of the pages. I aim to choose a quote that really resonates with me; it could be something I find on social media or read in a book. Having a simple quote that I can read to myself, especially in the midst of competition, might be the very thing that brings me back to the present moment and helps me handle things. I also call my mom on days when I don’t feel ready. It happens. I pour out my feelings, and she listens, providing me with a little more courage suddenly. Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, and Barack Obama – these are all powerful idols whom I look up to in my life and who have shaped my mindset. When I envision a round of golf with them, I think about absorbing and learning from their mindset through the time spent on the golf course. I’m a big advocate for learning from other people. Tiger Woods, for his bulletproof mentality; Kobe Bryant, for his relentless work ethic; and Barack Obama, for his ability to lead a country and command a calm presence. I believe they would excel at golf not just due to their unique strengths but also because of their mentalities. Often, golf is not merely about executing through technique but about handling situations and finding the best possible outcome. These individuals have all experienced such challenges in golf or other aspects of life, and they have consistently succeeded and risen to the top. Thus, I believe they would thrive in the sport. I would want to play the Old Course at St. Andrews. I find it incredibly historical, and playing at such a course, especially with my deep connection to golf, would likely be a mind-blowing experience. It goes beyond just playing; it’s about experiencing the history behind the sport that has shaped my life and thoroughly enjoying it. Since I have my tour card, I would say my first LPGA win is a significant milestone that I hope to achieve soon. If you could play a round of golf with three historical or fictional figures, who would they be and why? And, do you think their personalities would affect their golf game? If you could play a round of golf anywhere in the world, with no limitations, where would it be, and what makes that location your dream golf destination? What would be your next step in Golf ? Let’s talk pre-tournament rituals. Any empowering rituals or lucky charms that bring out the playful warrior in you before hitting the course?
