Maybank Battle of the Reds: Football Legends Met at KLGCC The lush greens of Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club’s East Course played host to an electrifying showdown that transcended football rivalries. On April 25th, 2024, Maybank proudly presented the “Battle of the Reds Golf Tournament,” where titans from Manchester United and Liverpool traded their football boots for clubs and teed off for charity. With anticipation hanging in the morning air, golfers eagerly awaited the arrival of legendary football icons. Amongst the star-studded lineup were Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, Wes Brown, Keith Gillespie, Patrick Berger, Glen Johnson, Vladimir Smicer, and John Arne Riise, each bringing their competitive spirit to the tee. As the sun rose on the horizon, the tournament kicked off at 8:30 AM , setting the stage for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie. Amidst the picturesque backdrop of KLGCC, players vied for victory, channeling the same passion and determination that defined their football careers. Adding to the excitement, Maybank sweetened the pot with an enticing prize – four lucky golfers would secure a dream golf trip to Liverpool, complete with flights and accommodation. It was a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy of these footballing giants and a testament to the unifying power of sport.

Swinging into Wellness: Unveiling the Secrets to Peak Performance with Karolina, Physio Extraordinaire at KLGCC! Welcome to an illuminating interview with Karolina from Kiara Physiotherapy, the skilled physiotherapist at KLGCC. Get ready to take a swing into the world of golfing wellness as Kiara shares her insights on keeping players at the top of their game. From tackling those pesky injuries to helping golfers reach their peak performance, Kiara’s got the inside scoop on all things physio at the club! First off, thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Could you give us a little insight into what a typical day looks like for you as the physiotherapist here at KLGCC? Certainly! My typical day involves assessing and treating patients and athletes mostly with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. I am designing personalized treatment plans for each patient, conducting comprehensive manual therapy sessions, educating on injury prevention and guiding on flexibility and strengthening exercises as we as collaborating with other healthcare professionals and personal trainers as needed. Additionally, I may also engage in administrative tasks such as documentation and communication with patients and their referring physicians. I am also conducting educational workshops for physio on a monthly basis. Each day brings new challenges and great opportunities to help my patients to improve their physical well-being and that’s what I genuinely enjoy doing. How does your background in physiotherapy translate into the unique demands of working with golfers? Prior moving to Malaysia 9 years ago, I used to work as a physiotherapist with polish national high-performance athletes in the Olympic Sport Center in Spala, Poland. This experience has equipped me with insights into optimizing performance and preventing injuries, which I apply to address the specific biomechanical demands of golfers here at KLGCC. I collaborate closely with avid golfers as well as juniors and professional senior golfers including Olympic representative. My role is to address any physical limitations or discomfort they may experience, helping them achieve their goals on the course while optimizing their overall musculoskeletal health thru manual therapy, deep tissue massage, dry needling, movement approach just to name a few.

What are some common injuries or physical issues that golfers face, and how do you help them overcome these challenges? I would say that in my practice I observe the most commonly issues such as to lower back pain, shoulder injuries, knee and hip related problems as well as golfer’s elbow. To address these, my main focus is thorough biomechanics assessment which involves functional tests, joints and spine range of movement, swing analysis, muscle balance testing and finally treatment and targeted exercises to improve flexibility and strength, ensuring golfers can perform at their best while minimizing injury risk. What I commonly observe is that golfers put a lot of emphasis on working on thier strength while neglecting the importance of mobility. So ensure your mobility first strength, second. Any insider advice you can share for preventing those common golf-related injuries? 1. Warm up properly with dynamic exercises prior your golf game. 2. Stretch regularly to maintain flexibility. 3. Strengthen your muscles for better stability. 4. Practice proper technique with a pro golf instructor - if you are a beginner. 5. Listen to your body and address any discomfort promptly by seeking qualified physiotherapist or other professionals if needed. Often, by incorporating physiotherapy into your golfing routine, you can enhance physical resilience, optimize performance and minimize the risk of injury on and off the course. 6. Last but not least - don’t underestimate the importance of rest/recovery by ensuring sufficient sleep, balanced nutritious diet and stress management. Can you share a success story or memorable experience from your time working with golfers at KLGCC? One remarkable success story involved a middle aged female golfer diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear who was advised by multiple doctors to undergo surgery as she was in acute pain and unable to raise her arm. Instead, she opted for a conservative approach with physiotherapy and reached out for my assistance. Through targeted exercises which she diligently followed at home and manual therapy I was supporting her with, she experienced significant improvement in shoulder function and was able to return to playing golf without the need for surgery. It was a rewarding outcome for me as the therapist and most importantly for her being able to restore her quality of life. As after all golfers want golf. With Karolina on the team, golfers at KLGCC are in expert hands. Her dedication to keeping players fit, flexible, and firing on all cylinders is par for the course. Don’t forget, Kiara Physiotherapy is open Monday to Saturday, from 9 am to 6 pm, located at the 1st floor of KLGCC West lobby, right next to our Gymnasium. Specializing in modern, holistic treatment approaches, Karolina’s clinic offers tailored solutions for a wide range of acute and chronic pain conditions. From back and neck pain to sports injuries and stress-related disorders, Karolina’s clinic is just a swing away to keep you in top form.
