Keeping up with the traditions: After fasting for one month, Muslims around the world celebrate their victory on the first day of Syawal, also known as Eidul-Fitr, which literally means “festivities of breaking fast” in Arabic. Personally, Ramadan brings me back to my childhood, where it was a huge family affair. My mother would cook different dishes for buka (breaking fast) every day. After breaking our fast, we would perform Maghrib prayers before dinner. While my mother was busy baking Hari Raya cookies like Kuih Sagun or Nest Golly, we would entertain ourselves by playing with sparklers. She would change the cushion covers and prepare new clothes for us to wear on the morning of Hari Raya. I remember we used to have a big tree branch in the house to hang the greeting cards. Now, having my own family with grown-up children, it is still a family affair where we all break our fast together after everyone gets home from work. Buka/iftar consists of kurma (dates), rice with dishes, fruits, and dessert. We usually perform our Terawikh prayers at either the nearby surau or mosque and look forward to moreh (supper) after the prayers. Traditional Hari Raya menu includes lemang, nasi himpit, ketupat, rendang, kuah kacang (peanut sauce), and kuah lodeh. It is also a tradition in our family to visit the graves of those who have left us either on Hari Raya eve or in the morning after solat sunat Hari Raya. The children always look forward to receiving duit raya in the colorful ang pow packets. Before giving out the duit raya, being Javanese, it is our tradition to perform the “ngapuro” first. “Ngapuro” in Javanese basically means asking for forgiveness. The elders will sit on the sofa, and the youngsters will take turns asking for forgiveness for all the wrongdoings they have done in the past year. When I was younger, it was quite daunting waiting for our turns because my late dad had a big family. 15 siblings altogether! Nowadays, it’s more limited to my own immediate family, but it’s good practice to keep the tradition alive. The first day of Hari Raya is spent visiting families and relatives. It is a good time to renew kinship with them since everyone is busy with their own lives all year round. Sometimes, Hari Raya is the only time we see each other, and it’s totally understandable. Another unique and special tradition for Hari Raya in Malaysia is, of course, the open house concept. This is something to look forward to in the whole month of Syawal. Curated by KLGCC’s Culinary Team, the visitors and KLGCC members alike have indulged in an array of delectable dishes, from traditional Malaysian favourites to international cuisine. Companies have chosen this venue to organize their Company Buka Puasa, adding to the lively atmosphere. The colourful Moroccan-themed decor has been a highlight, with guests loving to take pictures with the intricately designed backgrounds, adding to the festive ambiance. Guests have particularly loved the new additions to the menu, including grilled seafood and shawarma, which have become instant favourites. Additionally, the introduction of tau fu fah to the variety of dishes has been refreshing, offering a delightful twist to the culinary offerings. As guests lined up for the tantalizing kambing bakar, they were serenaded by live music played by talented bands, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.
