PROFILE

Victoria Anne Soo Hock Ping
(012020020036)
Bachelor in Teaching English as a Second
Language (BTESL)
Management and Science University,
Shah Alam
I am a final year student in MSU who is currently studying to become a
secondary school English teacher, with the goal of inspiring students to learn the
English language. Besides that, I am also a soon-to-be teacher-in-training in
which I am preparing myself to be a better teacher through this subject,

Microteaching.

PERSONAL PRINCIPLE IN TEACHING

Teaching is not meant for everyone. There has to be a strong passion and
patience to be able to teach people, especially those who are not interested in
learning at all. Teaching is about sharing one's knowledge in order for the other
person to understand the subject matter clearly. Teachers are there not to only
provide answers to students but to help improve the students by guiding and
facilitating them. Therefore, it is important for teachers to know the correct way
in teaching in order to help their students grow not only in the subject but also

personally.

Teaching styles are very important during lessons. Teachers have the
responsibility to make their teaching fun and exciting at the same time
knowledgeable so that students would be interested to learn. To some people,
teaching may seem to have a lot of work, and truthfully from what I have heard,
it is. However, to me, teaching is fun especially when what you are teaching is

understood by the students.

OVERALL REFLECTION ON

MICROTEACHING CLASS

Through this microteaching class, I was able to gain a lot of knowledge not
only on how to teach but also on writing a proper lesson plan. I was taught step-
by-step on how to write a proper lesson plan and I have learnt many things. For

example, the LS and CS should be copied and pasted into our lesson plan, in
which I, who is a final semester student only found out now and that I have
writing my lesson plan wrong since the beginning of my degree education.

Moreover, I learnt that teaching has gone through a major change since I was in
school and that we as future teachers need to adapt to that change and try to be

familiar with it in order for our future students to understand our lesson and
also be interested in learning. We as future teachers need to incorporate 21st
century teaching aids to keep up with the modernisation of our education

system as well as to keep students entertained.

Furthermore, the emphasis on us in producing teaching aids had shown me
how important teaching aids are in a teaching learning session as through my
experience, teachers in my school had never incorporated teaching aids that are

that interesting and fun. Through this class, I learnt the importance of a
teaching aid can truly change a classroom's engagement.

Last but not least, I believe that this Microteaching class had taught me many
important points for me to be able to be a successful teacher. This class had not
only shown me how to be a proper teacher but also motivated me to try my best

to become the greatest English teacher for my future students.

4TH JULY 2022,
MONDAY
(LECTURE)

-INTRODUCTION-

REFLECTION:

This was the first class, so we were introduced on what to expect from this subject. Mdm
Nirmala had given a brief introduction on the assignments and projects that we are
required to do. Through this lesson, I was able to find out the meaning of microteaching
which is different from a normal lesson as there are a few differences like the number of
students, time and so on which makes microteaching a much effective way of teaching.
Other than that, through this lesson, I was also given a preview of what is in DSKP in
which it has stated that teachers are not only there to teach the content but we are also
required to teach soft skills, values and so on. Mdm Nirmala also mentioned a few
things that we needed to take note when we are writing a lesson plan, for example, our
lesson plan should be in detailed in order for us to be able to have a clear vision of what
we are going to conduct in the lesson during our internship. Even though this is only the
first lesson but I have already learnt a lot.

(LECTURE)

-KSSM & DSKP-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we discussed on the changes of KBSM to KSSM and also the comparison of
CEFR with KSSM. We have also touched on the DSKP as well as lesson plan in which we
looked into the content of both of these materials. I have learnt a lot of new things from this
lesson as I had no idea that there were so many changes in the syllabus since I left
secondary school and that CEFR has always been in our KSSM for English Language in
Malaysian schools. Moreover, from this lesson I got to know that the DSKP plays a very
important role in guiding the teachers on conducting their lessons. Moving to the lesson
plan, since the beginning of my degree I have always written the content standard and the
learning standard on my own and had no idea that I had to copy and paste it from the DSKP
which came to a shock to me. I was given a detailed insight on how to properly prepare a
good and detailed lesson plan. I truly had learnt something new from this lesson.

7TH JULY 2022, DEMONSTRATION
THURSDAY OF SMART TV
(TUTORIAL)

-LESSON PLAN (LS, CS &
LO)-

REFLECTION:

For this lesson we were introduced to the usage of a smart TV by a staff from the IT
department. The TV was fascinating as it can be connected to up to four devices at
once. Moving to our tutorial today, we were given a quiz to revise on the lessons that
were taught in class. Through this quiz, we not only refresh our knowledge on previous
lessons but also attain new information like how Learning Standard (LS), Content
Standard (CS), and Learning Objectives in the lesson plan should all be connected and
that the learning objective should be the specific outcome from the LS. Moreover, each
LS should be taught in the span of three to four weeks.

(TUTORIAL)

-LESSON PLAN-

REFLECTION:

In this tutorial class, each of us were given a language skill and with that skill we were
asked to write out a lesson plan. From previous subjects, I have written a lesson plan
but somehow it was difficult for me to write one out during this lesson. In my opinion,
it could have been because on the previous lesson plans it was all written without
following the DSKP and after I was taught on how to properly write out the CS and LS
as well as the cross-curriculum elements (EMK), I had a hard time on choosing which
CS that I wanted to focus on and which EMK is suitable for my topic chosen. From this,
I found that I have to practice more on writing lesson plans in order for me to get used
to the format and proper selection of elements from the DSKP for my lesson plans in
the future to be related to my topics.

TASK

12TH JULY 2022,
TUESDAY
(LECTURE)

-LESSON PLAN (LO)-

REFLECTION:

For this lesson, we were given an in-depth explanation on how to write a proper learning
objective even though now in schools we use the term learning outcome as with outcome,
it focuses more on the students and it is more on what the teachers need to do for the
students' to achieve. Before this lesson, I knew that we needed to use Bloom's Taxamony
to write out a proper learning objective but I did not know that there was an approach
called SMART where it is a guideline for teachers to write out a specific, measurable,
attainable, relevant and have a proper time-based objective for each lesson. Moving
along, we were asked to write out story that shows the usage of all six cognitive domain
of Bloom's Taxamony in groups. Through this activity, I had a better understanding of the
application of this framework.

TASK

14TH JULY 2022,
THURSDAY
(TUTORIAL)

-LESSON PLAN (LO)-

REFLECTION:

For this lesson, we were taught on the ABCD statements and how to apply those
statements into writing a good learning objective. We were given many
examples by Mdm. Nirmala in order for us to understand and for me these
statements are easy to understand and apply. We were also given words that
should not be used when writing out learning objective which are: know,
understand, appreciate and answer. Other than that, I have just found out that
we can write a maximum of three learning objective in a lesson plan which is
according to the number of our activities.

15TH JULY 2022,
FRIDAY

(TUTORIAL)

-LESSON PLAN-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we were asked to continue constructing a lesson plan based on last week's
skill that she had given us. We needed to change our lesson objectives to the way that
Mdm. Nirmala had taught us. For me, the writing of the learning objectives are
comprehensible, however, during the writing of the activity I faced a few challenges as I
did not know how to properly write out the step by step in detail. Next, after completing
the lesson plan, I submitted my lesson plan on Padlet to be checked by Mdm. Nirmala.
Mdm mentioned that I could have made the activity for the post-listening to be more
fun and that I should write out the activity in more detail. For example, instead of saying
'teacher explains the activity', I need to write out how does the teacher explains or what
steps does the teacher does to explain the activity.

-LESSON PLAN (SET
INDUCTION)-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we were taught on how to write a good set induction. Set induction is very
important as it is the way we start the class and we want the students to be motivated
and ready to learn. Therefore, the materials that we use for this session should be
accompanied by visual aids as well as be attractive and colourful. We were given tips
on how to gain the students' attention which is through using attention getters like
clapping and so on. Other than that, we were also given instruction on our project 1
which will be conducted with school students which makes me feel excited as I would
be able to gain a very good experience for teaching before going for intern but at the
same time I am very nervous and scared that I would not be able to do a good job.

-TEACHING AIDS-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, Mdm Nirmala started off with a recap of yesterday's class which is on set
induction and she played a video for us to refresh what was taught. Mdm even reminded us
that we needed to write out our LO on the whiteboard in order for the students to be able to
know what they will be taught for that day's lesson. Moving along, for this lesson we were
taught on teaching aids and the different types of teaching aids that can be used in a
lesson. Mdm also mentioned that it is important for us teachers to include activities that
can allow the students to move physically and also to use audio-visual teaching aid
compared to just lecturing or reading notes in the classrooms. For me, I have personally
experience teachers bringing in interesting teaching aids to each a lesson and it was the
most fun experience ever and I remember the lesson taught very clearly as well. Therefore,
when I become a teacher I would like to do the same.

(TUTORIAL)

-LESSON PLAN (SET
INDUCTION)-

SET INDUCTION~ONLINE

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we were told to edit our previous lesson plan's set induction. We needed
to add in the 4 elements which are getting the students' attention, interest, setting the
context and advance organiser. Next, Mdm Nirmala had given us a few tips on writing
a lesson plan, she mentioned that:

Do not write from the students' perspective
Do not predict what the students will be doing
All the activity need to have connections
Need to explain the LO in the set induction
Write the a few example questions in the lesson plan (for microteaching)
MUST always have a backup plan
From this lesson, I was able to write a proper set induction with the help of Mdm
Nirmala as she helped amend some parts of the set induction to make it better. In my
opinion, my knowledge on writing a set induction truly has improved greatly.

(LECTURE)

-STIMULUS VARIATION-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we were taught on stimulus variation, where it is things we do in that 1 hour to make
our students focus in class. There are 5 stimulus that can help us gain students' focus:

1.Intensity: the sound, the light (setting the mood) / having healthy competitions, voice can be
high or low.

2.Contrast: teaching aids can be big or small.
3.Movement: teacher and students' movements or even the whiteboard's movement or

placements.
4.Audio-visual aid: this is a must in every lesson to gain student's attention and focus.
5.Teacher's personal behaviour: Teacher should be enthusiastic, energetic and expressive and to

not bring any personal problems into the lesson.
Moreover, our gestures and standing position in the classroom is also very important. In my
experience, teachers in my school seldom pay attention with using these stimulus variation in
classrooms which made me as a secondary school student to be bored in the classroom.
Therefore, when I become a teacher, I would like to implement these stimulus variation to keep my
students focused in the classroom. That is why I need to practice hard on trying to use these
stimulus, especially the movement as when I get nervous I tend to fidget while standing.

11

26TH JULY 2022,
TUESDAY
(LECTURE)

-QUESTIONING
TECHNIQUE-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we were taught on questioning techniques. Throughout a lesson, teacher
should always include questions to be asked for the students. The questions asked
should be from the students' prior knowledge, according to Bloom's Taxonomy, based
on student's responses. Mdm Nirmala had talked about what to do when students do
not respond, students asks questions and also when students answers the questions.
When students do not respond, teacher should rephrase the question and try not to use
the students' L1 to explain. However if the student respond in their L1, we should
acknowledge them and to try to slowly teach them the word in English. When students
ask questions and teachers are not able to answer, teacher can redirect the question,
give rhetorical questions with clues in it, or even let students know that we don't know
and to get back to them another time.
*It is okay to say I'm not sure or I do not know*

-TEACHING AIDS-

REFLECTION:

For this lesson, we were asked to present 3 activities using the teaching aid that
we had created last Friday. As we presented, Mdm Nirmala had given us her
feedback on our teaching aids. Mdm Nimala mentioned a few points for us to
take note in order to ease our internship. For example,

Teaching aid can be reusable as long as the content of the lesson is the same.
We are to use materials that are on the cheaper side and to buy in bulk to
save cost.
The wordings on the teaching is better if it's printed in case students cannot
understand our handwriting or is too small for them to read.
The base of the teaching should be in pastel colours.
Writings should be in black or blue.
Better to use sugar paper or oil paper. (Bigger)

-REINFORCEMENT
STRATEGIES-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we were taught on reinforcement strategies. Reinforcement
strategies is to make sure the students repeat good behaviour in a classrooms and
in terms of a ESL classroom, it is to make sure the students are repeating the correct
use of language. There were 2 types of reinforcements, which are positive and
negative reinforcements. Mdm Nirmala mentioned that we should only give
rewards to students when the students did something good or the good behaviour
is repeated by the students. However, we should lessen the reinforcements as time
goes and to only give reinforcements only when the behaviour is worth it. There are
many types of positive reinforcements like giving praises, non-verbal cues, edibles
(but is not encouraged), choice activities and so on. In mu opinion, choice activities
and giving praises are reinforcements that are very useful therefore I will try to
implement them on my classroom in the near future.

(LECTURE)

-CLOSURE-

REFLECTION:

In this lesson, we were taught on closure. Closure is important as it is to wrap up and
to give an overview to the students on what will happen in the next class. There are
many reasons as to why teachers need closure, for example, it is in order for the
teacher to move on to the next topic, to see whether students understood the lesson
and many more. In closure, it is important that teachers give students enhancement
exercise which is also known as homework and also an extensive
task(recommendations) to allow the students to find more information on the topic
that they have learnt. In my opinion, closure needs to be practiced by teachers as
teachers need to know whether her lesson is understood by the students or not and
that teachers can amend her teaching styles based on the student's way of
understanding. I have realised that a proper closure is very important in a lesson.
Therefore, we should put more effort in doing a closure rather than just asking
students what they have learnt and ending the class.

4TH AUGUST 2022, THURSDAY
(TUTORIAL)

PROJECT 1 PRESENTATION

PROCESS:

During the process of me completing the teaching aid
for this project, I was very excited as I had so many
ideas on what to do but at the same time I was very
confused as I did not know which type of teaching aid
I wanted to choose and what type of activity I wanted
to focus on. I brainstormed for a couple of days and
finally decided to do a board game. Initially, I wanted
to create a board game similar to 'Snakes and
Ladders' with the language focusing on paraphrasing
skills and the supposed topic is extreme sports but
ended up creating my own type of board game with
my own rules focusing on WH-questions with the topic
'Stranded on a Desert Island'. It took me a whole
weekend to complete my board game along with the
lesson plan. I was very satisfied with the outcome of
my board game.

REFLECTION:

Mdm Nirmala commented that my group's teaching aids are all
good and okay. However, she mentioned that we needed to make
our teaching aids bigger in order for the students to be able to see
even when they are at the back of the class as well as to allow the
students to be able to move about in class. Other than that, Mdm
Nirmala mentioned that she liked our teaching aids and encouraged
us to prepare these types of teaching aids during our intern. All in
all, I am very proud with my group's work and in my opinion, all the
other groups also had did a great job with their teaching aids.

16

18TH AUGUST 2022, THURSDAY
(TUTORIAL)

PROJECT 2 (TASK A: MOCKTEACHING)
PRESENTATION

PROCESS:

During the process of me completing the teaching
aids and lesson plan of this project, I was very lost on
what I wanted to do. I did not know which topic I
wanted to focus on as there were too many topics in
the Form 5 textbook. At last, I went with 'Unit 9:
Getting Away' where I decided to make a map of
Malaysia and created an activity with the map. After
deciding my activity, I brainstormed ideas on how I
should gain attention from my peers in my set
induction. With the help of my friends, I finally was
able to come up with a set induction that I was
satisfied with. The making of my teaching aid was
definitely not an easy task as I am not a artistic
person. Luckily for me, my friend Syakirah had given
me input on what I could do to make my teaching
aids more colourful and attractive. I could not have
done it without my friends' help.

SLIDES

REFLECTION: 17

At the start of this presentation, I was very nervous and during my
set induction I had forgotten what I had planned to do. Luckily I had
a copy of my lesson plan next to me for me to refer to, thanks to
Mdm Nirmala's advice. After that mishap, I was back on track. As I
slowly get used to being in front of the class, I felt that I became
more natural in conducting my lesson and I did not feel as awkward
as the beginning. In my opinion, I did a pretty good job but there are
still lots of improvements that I needed to work on. For example,
getting rid of my nervousness, being more confident when I am
standing in front of the class and so on. Mdm Izzati had given me
feedback as well, Mdm mentioned that I did a good job in my mock
teaching and that my teaching aids and set induction was very
interesting which made me very happy as I had put a lot of effort
and thought into them.

PROJECT 2 (TASK B: E-PORTFOLIO)

REFLECTION:

This E-Portfolio allows me to take notes and revise on what I have learnt during the
lecture as well as allowing me to reflect on the lesson. Moreover, I was also able to
discipline myself to write a short reflection of each lecture at the end of the day in
order for me to not be left behind on my work. Writing these reflections are like
training for the future as teachers need to write reflections everyday after each lesson.
Other than that, I was able to express my creativity through designing this E-Portfolio
in which I find to be happy with the outcome.
