13 Cooking at Home Cooking at home is a delightful and rewarding experience, (0) but it also comes with its share of safety concerns. Practising safety in the kitchen is essential to (9) accidents and ensure that your culinary creations are enjoyable and free from harm. First of all, you (10) to keep your kitchen clean and organised. Make sure to regularly clean countertops, cutting boards, utensils and appliances to prevent crosscontaminating your food. You must also (11) your knives and other sharp objects in a safe place far from the reach of young children and pets. It is also important that you use proper kitchen attire when cooking. Avoid (12) clothes with loose sleeves, long scarves or dangling jewellery. Instead, wear well-fitting, non-flammable clothing and tie back long hair to prevent it from coming into contact with open flames or hot surfaces. Burns are a frequent kitchen hazard. To prevent them, use oven mitts or pot holders (13) handling hot cookware and be cautious when opening oven doors and lids. Keep children and pets away from the stove and hot surfaces. Proper ventilation too is essential to (14) cooking fumes and prevent the build-up of potentially harmful gases. Always turn on the exhaust fan or open a window when cooking, especially when using high heat. When working with raw meat, practise good food safety habits. Wash your hands (15) after handling raw meat and use separate cutting boards and utensils to prevent cross-contamination. Furthermore, make sure to cook meat to the (16) internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria. You must also store food properly. Improper food storage can lead to illnesses. Keep perishable items in the refrigerator (17) or below 40 °F (4 °C) and do not keep leftovers for too long. Label and date food containers to help you keep track of freshness. Cooking safely at home is not just about creating delicious meals; it is also about protecting yourself and your loved ones from potential kitchen (18) . By following these essential safety tips, you can minimise the risk of accidents while happily cooking for your family. Questions 9 to 18 are based on the following passage. Hobbies Although we all have busy lives, it is important to have hobbies. Hobbies are good (0) for our mind, body and social life. In short, it (9) our lives. When we have a hobby, it allows us to take a break from our daily stresses (10) have some time to ourselves. Bear in mind, however, that not all hobbies are mere fun and games. Certain hobbies such as reading, writing, designing or learning a new language can keep us (11) . It can also (12) in us a sense of purpose to become better at it. (13) , the more time we devote to our hobby, the more satisfaction and sense of achievement we will get out of it. Hobbies too can help de-clutter our mind. It will help us take our mind away from stressful (14) and focus on an activity that we enjoy. (15) of the more popular hobbies for decluttering our mind include drawing, cooking, painting, knitting, sewing and meditation. It is good to have a physical hobby as it is a great way to keep in (16) . The trick is to choose a physical hobby that we enjoy, be it sports, dancing, yoga, gardening or hiking so that we can keep doing it. The added benefit of a physical hobby is that we will have (17) confidence, more energy levels and an overall improvement in our physical health. Also, if we join a sports team or exercise class, we can make new friends and expand our (18) circle. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 15 15/2/2024 1:45:17 PM

First Aid Camp Upon arriving, we were first shown to our dormitories. We (0) unpacked our bags and then went for our tea. After that, we listened to a series of lectures on how to (9) swiftly yet orderly from a disaster area, how to give first aid treatment to the injured and how to use the walkie-talkie (10) to rescue victims and call for aid. The next day, we were divided into groups. After breakfast, my team participated in a mock disaster (11) . We were told that a freak storm had occurred and we had to act out the scene. It was an eye-opener for me. Although there were (12) glitches and we were confused at what was happening in the beginning, the team leaders managed to coordinate well and the activity turned out to be a (13) . After lunch, we learnt (14) to pitch patrol tents, rescue victims and transport them to safety. In the evening, we did mass cooking. It was interesting to learn that simple (15) such as sardine, potatoes and rice can be used to cook up a nutritious meal for hundreds of survivors. On the last day, after breakfast, we packed up our bags and (16) to the main tent for the closing ceremony. Each of us wrote on a piece of paper what we had learnt (17) the duration of the camp. A few of us wrote out our testimony. I praised the organisers because I had learnt many new things about disaster management and survival tactics. Before (18) the camp, we were all given certificates for our participation. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 17 15/2/2024 1:45:17 PM

Burglary at the Museum It was (0) near closing time and the crowd at the museum was thinning. The visitors were preparing to (9) and the staff were packing up and making the final rounds before closing. Perhaps it was because of this mad rush that not many people were (10) to their surroundings. And this was also perhaps why the burglars chose this time to strike. The burglars entered just minutes before closing time. The entrance of the museum was briefly (11) and two men and a woman walked in, unnoticed. They entered the first hall where the famous local painting, Mahsuri was displayed. It was not a particularly big painting, but her radiance (12) up the room. The spotlights (13) the room gave her a life-like sense and the two men pretended to be very absorbed by the painting. They were talking to each other while referring (14) a booklet. At the end of the hall, the woman placed her large briefcase onto the floor and (15) a painting slightly. That immediately set the alarm system (16) . As the alarm started (17) , the two men quickly grabbed the Mahsuri painting and passed it to the woman. Then they made their getaway. Sliding the painting into her briefcase, she walked out in a hurry and left the hall. Just then, the barrier descended and she (18) ! She knew that the guards were coming by now, so she ran to another exit door on the side of the museum and let herself out. A van was waiting by the main gate and she successfully joined her two friends who had made their way there earlier. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 19 15/2/2024 1:45:17 PM

Hygiene in the Kitchen It is an important fact to remember that food carry some (0) form of bacteria. In the worstcase scenario, this (9) lead to food poisoning or something more serious. This risk can be reduced or eliminated by good food (10) and proper cooking. Here are some tips to (11) when you are in the kitchen. Always keep your hands, cooking utensils and food preparation surfaces (12) . Most importantly, never allow pets to climb onto any work surfaces because they may leave germs or bacteria that you may not be aware of. Dish cloths and dish towels must be washed and changed (13) . If possible, use the disposable types which should be replaced on a daily (14) . Do not buy foods that have passed their expiration date. Avoid bulk buying fresh produce because fresh foods lose its nutritional value and freshness fast. That means buying (15) small amounts is a better choice. Before food is prepared, make sure all work surfaces and utensils are clean and dry. Separate chopping boards should be used for raw and cooked meat, fish and vegetables. All poultry must be (16) thawed before cooking. Once defrosted, meat should be (17) as soon as possible. Meat, poultry, fish, seafood and dairy products must be refrigerated. Food in the fridge or freezer should be covered. This is to (18) drips and cross-contamination from happening. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 21 15/2/2024 1:45:17 PM

Keeping Pets Pets are mainly kept as a (0) companion. Common domesticated pets include birds, cats, dogs, mice and fish. Sometimes unusual pets are kept (9) . There are records of elephants, iguanas and even wild animals such as bears being kept as pets. However, for such (10) animals, you would usually need a licence or some special permission to rear them. Another reason people like to keep pets is because they want to give and receive unconditional (11) from animals. It is common to see people who live alone keeping pets in their house. Perhaps it is a way to keep themselves from being lonely. But studies have (12) that keeping pets also has a therapeutic effect on humans. For example, children who live with pets learn (13) . They learn that all living creatures have a place in the world and should be respected. This is a worthy thing to (14) because when these children grow up, they will be able to feel compassion for all living things and not behave cruelly (15) them. However, having said that, not everyone (16) from keeping pets. Often, we find that people like having pets only for a short time. Most often, they have not thought through about the responsibilities and the lifespan of the pet in question. Many get tired of having to take care of their pets after a few years. This is when animal abuse and (17) come into the picture. Some animals remain locked up in their cages for days or weeks and are even left hungry. Others are just chased out into the streets to (18) for themselves. These are things a responsible pet owner should never do. Therefore, one needs to think thoroughly first before adopting a pet. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 23 15/2/2024 1:45:17 PM

Acne If you are a teenager, chances are you cannot wait to get rid of acne. If you are an adult, you cannot (0) believe it is back! Fortunately, there are better treatments now to handle this (9) in an effective way. The major determining (10) in who gets pimples is genes. It means you may have inherited a skin characteristic that (11) you more likely to develop acne. You have thousands of oil glands in the skin on your face, chest, and back that lubricate the skin by producing sebum. The sebum or oil flows from the glands (12) tiny ducts to the skin surface. Sometimes these oil ducts become plugged with sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells that shed from the lining of the duct. That is acne. Adults could possibly develop acne (13) imbalance in hormones. Stress is also a factor that can affect your hormones. For ladies, the use of cosmetics, especially heavy, oily (14) may clog pores and cause acne. But, fret not! No matter what is causing your acne, there are steps you can take to (15) it. Firstly, do not poke, pinch or pick on your acne. You risk spreading the bacteria onto other areas of your face and causing (16) acne to pop up. Instead, you may use some over-the-counter or prescribed medication to help lessen the breakout. Meanwhile, go easy on your face. Do not use a wash cloth or try to rub your acne away. Some teens try to wash their face ten times a day to get rid of it but in actual fact, acne has nothing to do with (17) . You may be over-washing your skin and irritating the sensitive skin on your face. Simply use a (18) soap on your face with warm water and wash only twice a day. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 25 15/2/2024 1:45:17 PM

The Venus Flytrap The Venus Flytrap is a small, colourful carnivorous (0) plant . It is found in the subtropical wetlands in America, mainly near North and South Carolina. The Venus Flytrap’s structure (9) about four to seven leaves which grow from a stem. It is actually a flowering plant, best known for its (10) ability to attract, trap and eat its prey. The trap is made up of a jaw-like closing with two halves of the leaf that can move (11) each other. (12) the inner surfaces of these leaves, or lobes, are hair-like projections called ‘trichomes’ that cause the lobes to snap (13) when prey comes in contact with them. The plant uses sweet nectar to (14) its prey. Once a fly or a spider or any small insect comes in (15) with the hair-like projections, electrical signals cause the trap to slam shut. The insect’s continued (16) will cause the trap to seal and soon, digestive enzymes will be released to dissolve the victim’s soft tissues. The trap, or rather the plant, absorbs the nutrients from the prey and in about a week later, it reopens its lobes, using the carcass to attract new (17) . If you try to (18) this plant with something that does not move, the lobes will not snap shut. You will need to move the food around, imitating a live prey before the trap shuts tight. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 27 15/2/2024 1:45:17 PM

29 In December 2017, Ian Andrews had one of the scariest and craziest experiences — he got lost in a jungle. The American citizen had two weeks to spend alone in Malaysia before his wife would join him for Christmas. Since it was his last few weeks alone, he decided to try something uncommon and exciting. Andrews decided to visit the oldest tropical forest in the world, Taman Negara. He did his research about the park and found out that it is 130 million years old and has a total area of 4,343 km² which is almost four times the size of New York. He couldn’t wait to see the huge trees, and hopefully get a glimpse of the animals there such as the wild tigers, rhinoceros and elephants. Andrews did not like to go on a group tour. He preferred to discover places on his own and to go wherever he wanted. Therefore, when a national park tourist officer advised him to take a tour guide to walk in the jungle, he ignored him. He felt it was a tourist rip-off. Because Andrews’s time was limited, he only had four days in the park, he immediately started walking with his limited supplies on an 8-km trekking road. It was easy to begin with, in three hours, he thought he would be back to enjoy a nice lunch. He was enjoying his trek and went deeper into the jungle until there were less roads. Andrews then had a choice of walking on a beautiful touristic path with wooden sticks or a small track. Feeling adventurous, he went on the latter. However, Andrews only managed to travel one kilometre in two hours. He felt as if nature was literally fighting back against him. He was slowed down by every plant and tree with their stickiness, their spines and their size. Andrews also had to watch his steps and stop every 20 minutes to remove leeches from his body. During his trek, Andrews met a Malay man walking in the same direction as him. Andrews couldn’t speak a word of Malay and the man couldn’t speak any English. However, using sign language, they both agreed to travel together. This turned out to be a good idea. When Andrews fell from a small cliff, his trekking buddy pulled him back. The man also had some backpacker tricks such as using certain plants to reduce the pain from the leeches or drinking water from trees. After three hours of deep-jungle walk, they realised they had lost their track. They went back, but the path was just impossible to find. They were truly lost in the jungle. Soon, they ran short of water and food. Andrews began to panic. He had trekked for nine hours in the jungle and it was physically challenging. Sunset was coming. The men had two options; sleep in the jungle with no equipment and only bloodsuckers and tigers as sleep partners; or walk in the dark until they reached the river. They both knew that there was a river 5 km north. If they kept walking in that direction, they wouldn’t miss it. The jungle adventure was no longer fun. An hour later, right before sunset, they found the river. They decided to put up camp there. It was almost night time when Andrews saw a pirogue on the river. He shouted at it to get their attention. Thankfully the orang asli men in the pirogue heard him and came towards them. They brought Andrews and the Malay man out of the jungle. They felt so relieved and thanked the orang Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Practice 1 Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. 30 19 What motivated Andrews to visit Taman Negara, the oldest tropical forest in the world? A The opportunity to join a group tour B His love for wild tigers, rhinoceros and elephants C His desire for a rare and thrilling experience D The recommendation of a national park tourist officer 20 From paragraph 3, why did Andrews choose not to take a tour guide for his initial trek in Taman Negara? A He enjoyed exploring places on his own. B He found the tour guides too expensive. C He thought tour guides were not knowledgeable. D The national park tourist officer did not recommend it. 21 What made Andrews opt for the small track in the jungle instead of the touristic path? A The convenience of the touristic path B The recommendation of the Malay man C The beauty of the touristic path with wooden sticks D The thrill of adventure and a desire for a challenging experience 22 “However, using sign language, they both agreed to travel together.” Based on the phrase above, what can you conclude about the relationship between Andrews and the Malay man? A They both got along well. B They had their disagreements. C They were not very adventurous. D They both could not fully understand each other. 23 What contributed to the physical challenges Andrews faced during his solo trek in Taman Negara? A The lack of proper supplies B The absence of a tour guide C The scarcity of roads in the jungle D The stickiness, spines and size of plants and trees 24 From paragraph 8, all of the following were options Andrews and the Malay man had when they realised they were lost in the jungle except A call out for help. B sleep in the jungle. C put up camp in the jungle. D walk in the dark to reach the river. 25 How did Andrews' second jungle experience differ from his first, and what contributed to his enjoyment? A He went with a tour guide. B He avoided the small track. C He met more people during the trek. D He had more supplies and equipment. 26 What is the lesson that Andrews learnt from this experience? A The importance of exploring a jungle on your own B The value of listening to advice and using professional guides C The necessity of having enough supplies when jungle trekking D The significance of pushing physical limits for a more fulfilling adventure asli men. At the hostel, other guests looked at Andrews and the Malay man in shock. The men were in a poor condition – they were covered in blood and mud from bottom to top. It took Andrews three days to get the courage to return to the jungle again. This time, he went with a tour guide and enjoyed his experience tremendously. 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 30 15/2/2024 1:45:18 PM

There are a few beaches we could go to. However, I feel the best beach to go to is Rainbow Beach. It is not too far from town. We could take a bus to the beach. We can go swimming, jetskiing, snorkelling and do some kite-flying at the beach. There are also many stalls near the beach. My favourite is the stall that sells seafood. As to what to bring, I suggest you bring a towel, an extra pair of clothes and some sunscreen. Bye! Practice 2 To: [email protected] Subject: Plans for Tomorrow Hi, That’s a splendid idea! I suggest we play football. This is because all our neighbours enjoy playing football. Most of them are very good at the game too. We can learn from them on how to improve our game. We can play the game at the field in our neighbourhood. The field is big and it has goalposts. The goalposts however do not have nets. I will bring the nets. Can you bring the football? I have lent my football to a school friend. Bye! Practice 3 To: [email protected] Subject: Sunday Plans Hi, What a coincidence! I was about to ask you the same thing. We could go to Sunshine Shopping Mall. We can either take a bus or a taxi there. We could do a lot of things at the mall such as shop, watch a movie, get our hair done or other fun activities. We could also have our lunch at the food court. There are many local and western food stalls there. I think we should invite our classmates, Fiona and Lily. They would love to come. Bye! Practice 4 To: [email protected] Subject: Birthday Plans Hi, I cannot wait to celebrate your birthday. We could celebrate it at Malina Restaurant. It is located in town. The food is delicious and they will also provide a free birthday cake. The servers will sing the birthday song for you. They will also do a little dance. Furthermore, there is a karaoke machine at the restaurant. So after our meal, we can sing karaoke. I think a theme is a great idea! We could either have a colour theme or something more fun like a retro or anime theme. Bye! Practice 5 To: [email protected] Subject: Let’s Go Camping! Hi, Sure, that would be wonderful! The best place to go camping would be by Cinnamon River. We could go there by bus and then hike to the river. I have camped there a few times and it is really enjoyable. We could fish and swim in the river. We could also go jungle trekking and walk up the nearby hill. The view up the hill is breathtaking. At night, we can sit by the campfire and tell ghost stories. A few things to bring are tents, mosquito repellent, a compass, tinned food and bottled water. Bye! 01 mainTEXT BI F5 4P.indd 2 15/2/2024 1:45:21 PM Practice 2
