I smiled broadly because I looked good and confident. As the saying goes, “possessing self-confidence equals to half the battle won”. I was very confident that I would win the Elocution Contest. My talk was on ‘Turtle Conservation Programme’. I was involved in this programme as a volunteer. I had prepared an in-depth presentation with the information I had gathered from my observation and interviews with personnel at the programme. I sat in the packed hall with the other contestants and listened to their presentation with great interest. With each passing presentation, my confidence grew as I was confident that I had better images and statistics to support my presentation. Soon, my name was announced for the next presentation. I stood up, gave a sweet smile to the panel of judges as I passed them. Clutching the pen drive tightly, I went to the rostrum and inserted my pen drive into the laptop. I waited patiently for the presentation file but, alas, it was not there. Fear began to grip me as I realised that I had brought the wrong pen drive. I felt tears running down my cheeks. I wiped the tears and with a choked throat, I apologised for not having the supporting evidence for my presentation. Just then, my teacher walked up to the rostrum and gave me a pen drive. It was given to her by my mother. I realised my folly. Being an Indian, my mother was urging me to eat the sweetened yoghurt for good luck but I refused as I didn’t believe in superstitions. Now, I realised that bad luck had fallen on me because of not believing in superstitions and my mother. With renewed confidence, I began my presentation, supporting it with evidences from the pen drive. As expected, I won the contest. However, I learnt an important lesson too. I realise time management is so important. Hence, I went to Famous Bookshop to look for a book on time management. I was in luck as I found a book entitled Study Smart by Candy Smith. The book has 120 pages and the price is RM25. I found the book to be very interesting as there are many great tips on how to manage time effectively. They are set achievable goals, prioritise well and have deadlines. These are all practical ways to have a stress-free lifestyle. I never knew that these simple tips can actually change my perception of life. I now know that I’m stressed because I want to complete everything within a day. So, naturally, I will be stressed out. I would recommend this book to students as this book is easy to read and the language used is simple. Also, there are charts that will be very helpful when planning your daily and weekly goals. Every holiday, he goes to Terengganu to spend some time to bond with his grandparents and relatives. He loves visiting his grandparents’ village as it is a fishing village. The village is situated along a big river leading to the sea. In the evening, the river is packed with fishing boats. However, by 5 the next morning till about 3 p.m., the village becomes very quiet as the fishermen are busy at sea. From 3 p.m. onwards, there is a hive of activity as the fishermen are busy unloading their catch. There are some fishermen and middlemen at the jetty who are busy grouping the fish according to their types and sizes. Fahmi’s favourite activity is rowing his uncle’s sampan with his two cousin brothers. One day, as usual, the three teens rowed the sampan to the sea. It was quite a hot day but it did not bother the excited boys. Suddenly, they saw water gushing into the boat. They panicked. There was nothing in the sampan to throw the water out of it. Soon, the sampan began to flood and slowly, the front of the sampan began to tilt into the sea water. The boys stared at each other in disbelief. Luckily for them, there was a fishing boat passing by. The boys began shouting and waving their hands to attract the attention of the fishermen. Realising the boys’ plight, the fishermen came to their rescue. The boys quickly boarded the fishing boat and the sampan was hauled into the boat. The boys thanked the fishermen for saving their lives. Fahmi realised it is very important to determine the seaworthiness of a sampan before going out to sea.
