(c) reading to make an inference
2 First, read the instruction. Then, read each short text carefully to avoid
missing out important information. The short text can be an advertisement, a
notice, a brochure or a short article/newspaper report. Each text is followed by
a question.
3 Read the options given for each question.
• If the option includes specific factual information (dates, names or numbers),
refer to the text to search for this information to check if it is correctly
presented in the option.

1 Read the instructions and the text carefully.
2 The first reading will help you get an idea of what the text is all about.
3 One example is given so you know how to answer the question/complete Part 2.
4 Read the text for a second time. When you come to a blank, look at the options
given. Choose an option to fill in each blank.
5 Read the text again with the answers you have chosen. Make sure the word fits
the context of the whole sentence.
6 Study the examples in the text below to help you find the best word for each
blank.

vloggers make up some of the (1) social media influencers
among Generation Z. They play an important role in the lives of young
people so it isn’t surprising that many studies have been conducted to
(2) the impact of influencers on them.
1 A ideal B special C famous D favourite
Analysis
From the options, you know the missing word is a noun. Look at the words before
the blanks (toy unboxers, teen celebrities). They are different types of influencers
that a young person (Generation Z) would view, like, comment on and follow. They
are mentioned probably because they are popular or well-liked by young people. So,
we can conclude that ‘favourite’ is the best word to choose.

Extended Text
1 This section appears in Part 3 of the SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119/1) Paper 1.
2 It tests your understanding of a long reading text.
3 You are given a text of about 700 words. You have to answer eight multiple-
choice questions after reading the text.
4 You have to choose the correct answer from the options marked A, B, C or D.
5 This section carries 8 marks.
Guidelines and Tips
1 Read the instructions carefully.
2 Then, read the questions and options given. You read the questions first so you
have an idea what to look for in the text later. Make sure you read the questions
a few times so you know what to look for.
3 Now, read the text. When you read for the first time, you will do two things.
You will skim the text to get a general idea. Your eyes will follow the text from
start to finish. You will also scan the text for specific information. Your eyes will
move quickly from left to right and up and down to help you scan for names,
numbers, dates or places. You can circle these specific details.
4 Next, read the text for a second time. You will read it slowly and carefully. When
you read the text for the second time, you should do two things:
• understand the meaning of the text as a whole
• look for details and specific information needed to answer the questions
5 Read the questions and options again carefully. Eliminate options that you
know for sure are wrong. Then, refer to the part of the text that contains the
information needed to answer these questions. Find key words in this part to
help you determine the correct option.
6 Don’t rush through the questions even if you think you know the answer. Refer
to the relevant part in the text to make sure you have chosen the correct option.
Don’t be afraid if you can’t understand the meaning of a part of the text when
you read it the first time. You can reread it so you get the meaning.

1 The SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119/2) Paper 2 tests writing.
2 The duration of Paper 2 is 1 hour 30 minutes.
3 Paper 2 makes up 25% of the SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119) papers.
4 SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119/2) Paper 2 consists of three parts – Short
Communicative Message, Guided Writing and Extended Writing.
Short Communicative Message
1 This section appears in Part 1 of the SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119/2) Paper 2.
2 You will be given a short message in the form of an email.
3 You are required to write a response to the email in about 80 words.
4 This section carries 20 marks.
Guidelines and Tips
1 You need to scan the email or stimulus given in order to understand and know
the important elements you are required to respond to. The sender would
normally seek your suggestion, advice or opinion.
2 As such, identify the WH-questions put forward to you by the sender. This is to
help you determine what you must focus on when replying to the sender.
3 Write your email in an informal format. Begin by writing the recipient’s email
address.
4 Bear in mind to write the “Subject” in a short phrase that summarises the
content of your reply.
5 Similar to any informal email, begin with a short salutation such as “Hi!” or
“Hello”.
6 Remember that you are responding to the sender; therefore, ensure that your
message corresponds or relates to the sender’s questions.
7 Every suggestion, advice or opinion written by you has to be given at least one
reason or detail to support your response.

Penerbit Ilmu Bakti Sdn. Bhd Guided Writing UNIT 2
1 This section appears in Part 2 of the SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119/2) Paper 2.
2 Guided writing comprises the following types of essays: descriptive essays,
formal letters, argumentative essays, recounts and letters to the editor.
3 You will be given a question with a stimulus in three bullet points.
4 You are required to write an essay in 120 – 150 words.
5 This section carries 20 marks.
Guidelines and Tips
1 There are three content points given in the stimulus. Ensure that you answer all
the three questions.
2 Firstly, with regard to the content, the examiner must be fully informed by your
answers. Just bear in mind that it is through your essay that the examiner is
going to be informed of the topic you are going to write about. As such, write at
least two supporting details for each answer of the bullet points.
3 Secondly, with regard to communicative achievement, write your ideas
appropriately in a straightforward manner so that the examiner will be able to
understand what you are trying to express. Do not repeat points or write points
that are irrelevant to the question.
4 Thirdly, with regard to the organisation of your essay, use correct punctuation
marks and appropriate linking words that connect your ideas from one
paragraph to the other. Besides, the correct use of conjunctions such as but, so,
and, or and because determine the correct flow of the essay without creating
any confusion in the examiner with regard to your ideas.
5 Lastly, to attain the highest score in language, use vocabulary that is commonly
used and is expected by examiners. Besides that, use compound and complex
sentences in the correct structure and usage of grammar.

1 The SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119/4) Paper 4 tests listening skills.
2 The duration of Paper 4 is 40 minutes.
3 Paper 4 makes up 25% of the SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119) papers.
4 SPM Bahasa Inggeris (1119/4) Paper 4 has four parts – Short Dialogues/
Monologues, Longer Narrative/Monologue, Matching and Informal Dialogue/
Interview.
Guidelines and Tips
1 Each audio will be played two times. Before the audio is played for you to listen,
read all the questions for the respective part. For example, read only the MCQ
questions in Part 1 before the audio for this part is played. Do the same for the
other parts.
2 As you read the questions, you will be able to make up the key words that may be
able to help you to answer the questions. Therefore, underline or circle the key
words for you to focus on when you listen to the audio.
3 For Part 1 and 2, as you are able to get the answer while listening during the
first time the audio is played, circle your answer from the options given. Do
not waste time listening to the entire audio to answer the questions as you
might forget the answers.
4 When you have done as mentioned in the tip above, you may use the time when
the audio is played for the second time to check your answers. You also use the
time to listen to the audio carefully again to answer questions that you are not
sure of and questions that you left out during the first listening.
5 As Part 3 consists of matching the statements to the respective speakers,
basically you have to listen carefully to who spoke about what. There will be
seven statements listed (A – G) from which you have to choose only 5 of them to
match them to the right speakers (Speaker 1 – Speaker 5).
6 Before you are told to listen to the audio, read all the seven statements given and
underline/circle the key words that would help you to focus on the important
aspects in the audio.
7 Similar as to what have been mentioned earlier, listen carefully to the audio
during the first listening and write the number that corresponds to the letter
indicating the speaker.

in Paper 4.
10 Read the incomplete passage given before the audio is played. Take note that
you have to fill in the blanks given with only one word each. Therefore, as you
read the sentences, you would be able to know the information that you are
supposed to focus on while listening.

You will hear Rani talking about her visit to a home for underprivileged
children.
Last Saturday, the Girl Guides and Leo Club of my school visited a home for
underprivileged children. It was our first trip to the home which was situated just
10 kilometres away from our school. There were 22 of us, including two teachers,
Miss Lily and Mr Ron. We left the school at 9 in the morning and reached the
home an hour later.
When we arrived at the home, the children rushed out to greet us with open
arms. There were 50 children altogether and they were not afraid to meet us.
The children were aged between five and 13 years old. Our club members went
forward to say hello and exchanged pleasantries. Then, we were taken on a short
tour around the home. The surroundings of the home have lots of trees around.
There was a continuous breeze that made the environment cool and peaceful.
After the tour, we were taken to the main hall. We mingled with the children
and they shared some funny stories with us. Some of them even brought their
arts and handicraft pieces to show us. From our observation, each of them had
a talent. Some could sing, many were able to paint while the others were able
to draw and weave. The caretakers were kind to them and these children are
encouraged to take up hobbies through which they could display their talents.
As such, there were many beautiful paintings, drawings and handicraft pieces
displayed on the walls too.

an estimated 3,000 Malayan tigers prowled the forests of Malaysia. However,
according to a national survey, there are only 130 to 140 Malayan tigers left in
the wild today. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia revealed that
there have been recent sightings of four Malayan tigers, which show promising
signs of improvement for the species. More needs to be done to ensure the
species survives and thrives in our country’s tropical rainforests.

Subject: Exam Preparations
Hi Meera,
Thank you for the good wishes. As for the preparation, I’ve organised my lessons to study them
systematically. I hope to spend about three hours daily revising my lessons. Yes Meera, I’m not
being overconfident this time as I have learnt my lesson. I’m not attending the dance and music
classes till my exam is over. Of course, I’m too looking forward to take you around Singapore to
visit some interesting places. Please come over after my exam.
Love,
Bavani
