My school organised Canteen Day last Sunday to raise funds for the library. The Canteen Day started at 8.00 a.m. and was officially opened by the school Principal, Puan Wan Fatimah binti Wan Kamaruddin. Students from each class arrived at school to set up their stalls as early as 6 a.m. They arranged the tables and hung up posters. They also put price tags on the food and drinks. There were three games stalls and the games that they prepared were ‘Egg Hunt’, ‘Water Balloon Fight’ and ‘Arm Wrestling’. Many parents came together with their children. They bought food and drinks and sat under a huge tent. Parents enjoyed the performances on stage as they ate their breakfast. There was a variety of performances that include traditional dances, solo singing, choral speaking and sketches. The event came to an end after 3 hours. All food and drinks were sold out. Students stayed back to help clean up the huge mess. Although it was a tiring day, the students were very happy with the success of the event. 56 Reading Unit 2 Read the text below and answer questions 1 – 8. Practice 1 Practices African and Asian elephants can be found in Africa and Asia. Both species are social animals that live in large herds. Both species may look the same but both can be easily differentiated in many ways. African elephants have fuller, more rounded heads. The top of the head is a single dome. Asian elephants have a twindomed head. The lower lip of the two species also differ – African elephants have short and round lower lip while Asian elephants have long and tapered lower lip. African elephants’ ears are like the map of Africa – they are much bigger and reach up and over the neck. Asian elephants’ ears on the other hand are smaller, like the shape of India. Both genders of the African elephants have tusks. In contrast, only the male Asian elephants are equipped with tusks. In general, African elephants have more ribs than the Asian species. African elephants have 21 pairs of ribs while Asian elephants have 20 pairs. Both the species are herbivores. However, they prefer different types of plants. African elephants prefer leaves but Asian elephants usually consume grass. RCB.Ing_U2_vim3p(2023).indd 56 20/3/2023 10:28:11 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

She still keeps the brooch in her little jewellery box. It indeed has sentimental value. It was a Mother’s Day gift from Dad. I thought getting a brooch for her would be great. She can wear it to work. I am going to use the money I saved from Chinese New Year. It may cost more than I initially expected so I will need to do a few extra chores at home to earn some cash. PAK-21 Dear Hashima, Last Saturday was a special day for our teacher, Madam Jayalita. Our class organised a surprise party for her to celebrate her twentieth year teaching in our school. We did not tell her about it until that very morning and she was thrilled to bits! The whole class helped to decorate the hall for the event the day before. Our class monitor invited our Principal, all our teachers and a few former students to the party. Our English teacher, Puan Lee Kim Seng, helped us to order the meals from Hashtag restaurant, well-known for its nyonya food. Our assistant monitor, Jagjit Singh’s mother baked a special cake. It was in the shape of a book. During the party, everyone enjoyed the food and drinks served. After cutting the cake, we played some games and ‘Passing the Parcel’ was the most enjoyable. The party ended at a quarter past two. After everyone has left, my classmates and I helped to clean up the hall. Madam Jayalita told us that the best gifts she received were the photo collage we made for her and the bouquet of flowers from her former students. That is all for now. I will show you some of the photographs we have taken when you come for a visit. Your cousin, Amir RCB.Ing_U2_vim3p(2023).indd 60 20/3/2023 10:28:14 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Scan the QR Code or go to https://www.telegraph.co. uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/11722935/ World-Chocolate-Day-10-weird-chocolate-facts.html to learn more fun and surprising facts about chocolate. PAK-21 Theobroma cacao, or better known as cocoa, is a tropical evergreen tree grown widely in Central and South America, West Africa, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Philippines for its edible seeds – the cocoa beans. The beans are the most valuable part of the plant as they will eventually be processed into cocoa powder, cocoa butter and chocolate. Cocoa trees are believed to originate in the lowland rainforest of South America. They can live for over 200 years, though commercially they are considered productive for only about twenty-five years. Long regarded as a favourite sweet treat, chocolate comes in various forms. Bitter chocolate is made from roasted cocoa kernels (seeds). Sweet chocolate is produced by mixing sugar and vanilla with bitter chocolate. White chocolate contains sugar, cocoa butter, and milk. Cocoa is now used by some people as medicine. Cocoa seed is used for infectious intestinal diseases, asthma and bronchitis. The seed coat is used for liver, bladder, and kidney ailments. In addition, people apply cocoa butter to the skin to treat wrinkles and to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. RCB.Ing_U2_vim3p(2023).indd 64 20/3/2023 10:28:15 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

66 Reading Unit 2 Scan the QR Code or go to https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=7ltLdZxsGmQ to watch a video about the e-learning revolution. PAK-21 Practice 7 Read the text below and answer questions 1 – 8. E-learning has changed the way people learn. Instead of the traditional classroom learning, students study online via the internet. Lessons can be conducted either live or prerecorded. E-learning allows students to study at any time convenient to them. They do not need to travel, so this saves their travelling time too. Self-paced learning modules allow students to study at their own pace, and according to their own interests. They can select what they would like to study first, and plan their own schedule. This provides a more relaxing learning environment. Since students plan their own studies, they take responsibility for their own learning. However, e-learning may cause unmotivated students to fall behind. Their poor study habits would hinder them from progressing, and they would take a long time to complete their studies. When faced with challenges, students may find it difficult to ask questions as the course instructors may not always be available when needed. Another frustration is if the internet connection is slow. In conclusion, e-learning may not be for everyone. Students need to know their learning habits to decide if they are suited for e-learning. An awareness on the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning could further assist students to make an informed decision. PAK-21 Professor Stephen William Hawking was pronounced dead on Wednesday, 14 March 2018 at his home in Cambridge, England. He was 76. Born in Oxford, England, exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo on 8 January 1942, Dr Hawking studied physics at University College, Oxford. He was awarded a first class honours degree in natural sciences. Dr Hawking worked on the basic law that governs the universe. He discovered that black holes should not be completely black, but rather should emit ‘radiation and eventually evaporate and disappear’. Dr Hawking had 13 honorary degrees, was a recipient of many awards, medals and prizes, and bestselling author of many publications. One of his bestsellers is ‘A Brief History of Time’. What is equally amazing is Dr Hawking was wheelchair-bound and depended on computerised voice system for communication. He was diagnosed with ALS, a neuromuscular wasting disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, shortly after his 21st birthday. He could only flex a finger and move his eyes. His left mental faculty was untouched. Dr Hawking was well-known for his numerous quotes. Two of his popular quotes – ‘Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change’ and ‘People who boast about their IQ are losers’ – spread like wildfire on social media, following the announcement of his death. 70 Reading Unit 2 Practice 9 Read the text below and answer questions 1 – 8. Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, is a viral infection that can infect not only birds, but also humans and other animals. H5N1 and H7N9 are the common types that have infected some people during outbreaks in Asia, Africa, the Pacific, the Middle East, and parts of Europe. Most of the people who get bird flu have had close contact with infected birds or with surfaces that have been contaminated by the birds' saliva, mucous, or droppings. It is very rare for the virus to spread from one person to another. It may also be possible to catch bird flu by eating poultry or eggs that are not well-cooked. Bird flu illness in people can range from mild to severe. In some cases, bird flu can cause serious complications and death. Often, the symptoms are similar to the common seasonal flu. People who are at higher risk of contracting bird flu include pregnant women, people with weak immune system, and seniors aged 65 and older. However, the risk can be minimised by avoiding open-air markets and contact with infected birds. Washing hands frequently also minimises the risk of contamination. Unfortunately, on our first walk in the morning, following the Teluk Paku trail, the park was extremely busy and crowded, so there was no chance of seeing animals on the walk. The hike ended at the beautiful Paku beach. We swam and had our picnic there. The walk back to hostel in the afternoon was much quieter and we saw many proboscis monkeys, the big nosed, pot-bellied comedian of the rainforest, in the mangroves. The other hike that we did on the next day was the Teluk Delima trail, which was scarcely travelled by people. It ended in the mangroves where we saw lots of mud-skippers. We enjoyed the quiet moments spent here. We stayed one night in the park. The hostel was basic, but equipped with all you needed. Ours was a twin sharing room where there was a fan, a writing desk and two single beds. The beds were adequate to sleep in and the toilet was clean. There was a huge beach by the hostel where we relaxed and enjoyed the lovely sunset in the evening. Questions 1 – 8 Complete the following table. It is a fairly new bakery, only established in 2017, serving exceptional custom made cakes which are all baked-to-order to suit your special occasion. Craft Cakes is run by two brothers – Cico and Victor Craft. Their passion for baking began when they helped their mother bake butter cakes for friends and family members. Using social media, mainly Instagram and Facebook to take orders and to advertise their business, the brothers slowly built their brand online. “We did not have plans for this. We are driven by passion and that is what keeps us going,” said Cico. “Customers usually decide on what they want and they will send us images. Sometimes they would ask us for our opinions and ideas, and then we will search for images online and try to replicate them,” said Victor. The brothers would take about two days to make a cake depending on the craftwork involved and the difficulty of the design. So they have to work round the clock to ensure that the cakes are perfect before they arrive at their customers’ doorstep. “We do not compromise on the quality and use the highest quality ingredients available.” “We are taking one step at a time as we are still new in the baking industry. We still have a lot to learn to sharpen our skills. The biggest struggle of having a cake shop is being sleep-deprived,” Cico admitted. Despite the hard work, the brothers said that baking is fun and gives them great satisfaction. And their advice to those who want to start their own bakery business is “Don’t eat too much of your baked goods!” RCB.Ing_U2_vim3p(2023).indd 77 20/3/2023 10:28:20 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

His mother lived alone as his father had passed away a few years ago. Ben’s mother called him often but he would usually hang up after a few words, saying he was busy. He was so busy he almost forgot his mother’s birthday. So he quickly drove to a flower shop to order his mother’s favourite red roses. He gave the florist his mother’s address and instructed them to deliver the roses. As he got into his car, he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb, sobbing. “Hey, why are you crying? Where’s your mother?” he asked. The young girl looked up, still with tears in her eyes and said, “It’s my mother’s birthday and I wanted to buy a red rose for her. But I only have 75 sen, and a rose costs RM2.” Ben went into the flower shop and bought the young girl a red rose. He offered the girl a ride home. She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave. “Happy Birthday, Mummy!” the young girl said with tears running down her cheeks. Soon, Ben returned to the flower shop. He told the florist to cancel the delivery of the red roses to his mother’s house. He took the bouquet of red roses and drove 54 km to Seremban. He could not wait to see his mother. His mother was so happy to see Ben. Ben handed the red roses to his mother and said, “Mom, I have the greatest birthday present for you. I am shifting back home!” His mother cried tears of happiness and hugged her son. RCB.Ing_U2_vim3p(2023).indd 81 20/3/2023 10:28:20 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

At the tender age of 10, I was obsessed with watching YouTube and I was amazed when I watched how new inventions were created. I had always wanted to become a scientist. My parents owned a chicken farm. Despite being uneducated and busy with feeding the chickens in the farm, they took a great interest in my passion and always encouraged me to create my very own inventions. When I was in Form 3, the Science Club organised a Young Scientist Competition in conjunction with Science Week. All participants need to invent a gadget that could assist people in their daily lives. I knew this was my opportunity and I was so excited. Finally, I could make my parents proud of me. However, it was not as easy as I had thought it to be. I was at a loss at what to invent. One Sunday afternoon, I saw my mother hitting her lower back with her knuckles after she fed the chickens. It suddenly struck me that I could create a gadget that could help my parents feed their chickens. Besides helping them to save a lot of time and energy, they would not suffer any more back pain from bending for long hours. I worked day and night despite facing multiple failures. My parents noticed my frustrations and they kept motivating me. On my part, looking at them massaging their backs kept me going. Finally, I succeeded! I won first prize in the Young Scientist Competition. My Science teacher was greatly impressed and she submitted my invention to the National Science Exhibition. To my surprise, I won the Most Promising Young Scientist Award. I could not believe it! My parents were so proud of me. I was overjoyed too. I vowed that I would work harder to become a real scientist in the future so that I could contribute to my country. RCB.Ing_U2_vim3p(2023).indd 85 20/3/2023 10:28:21 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Why did you withdraw at the eleventh hour? Taufik: My grandmother was admitted to the hospital. She had a stroke. My family had to rush to Alor Setar. Anyway, tell me about the trip. Boon Wai: We left for Ipoh at the crack of dawn. We went to Ipoh Old Town first. It was once a prosperous tin-mining town in the 19th century. There, we saw many old buildings built in neo-classical style. Siva: I especially like the 3D wall murals around the Old Town. I took a lot of beautiful pictures. It’s a good spot to practise your photography skills. Taufik: Sounds interesting! Boon Wai: Yes, indeed. We dropped by the stalls nearby and bought some unique souvenirs. Siva: Next, we went to Kellie’s Castle, which was built by a Scottish rubber planter, William Kellie Smith, for his beloved wife. The Moorish style mansion was commissioned in 1915 but in the middle of construction, William died. So, the mansion was never completed. Taufik: I heard that it has hidden rooms and a secret tunnel. Is that true? Siva: Well, we saw many rooms but never came across the secret tunnel. Boon Wai: After that, we visited the tin dredge in Tanjung Tualang. This dredge was used for tin mining for 44 years until 1982, by which time Malaysian tin industry was in rapid decline. Taufik: So, what time did all of you leave Ipoh? Boon Wai: We left at dusk and arrived at 9.00 pm Siva: It was a tiring trip but we enjoyed ourselves as we were able to explore the historical sites in Ipoh. I believe it is a place where every student should go, at least once. Taufik: I wish I had come along too. Siva: Don’t worry, there’s always next time. Oh! I have to rush for my football training. 93 Reading Unit 2 Practice 10 Read the text below and answer the questions that follow. Dengue fever is a tropical disease caused by a virus carried by Aedes mosquitoes. Contrary to common belief, dengue is an urban disease – people living in urban and suburban areas are at the greatest risk of infection. When an Aedes mosquito bites a person who has been infected with a dengue virus, the mosquito can become a carrier of the virus. If this mosquito bites someone else, that person can be infected with dengue fever. The virus cannot spread directly from person to person. Symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening. Headaches, fever, pain behind the eyes, skin rashes, nausea, vomiting, and joint and muscle pain are the most common, but in some patients, the virus causes blood clot, which is internal bleeding that can be seen under the skin and from the nose and gums. In rare cases, dengue fever can lead to a more serious form of the disease called dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). DHF can be life-threatening because it can lead to sudden collapse, weak pulse and bleeding. Symptoms can start anywhere between 4 days to 2 weeks after being bitten by an infected mosquito, and typically last for 2 to 7 days. To make a diagnosis, the doctor will examine you and evaluate the symptoms. The doctor will ask about your medical history and recent travels, and send a blood sample for testing. The best way to prevent infection is to protect against the bites of the mosquitoes that transmit the virus and to minimise sites where mosquitoes can breed. This involves using insect repellent, wearing clothing that fully covers the skin while outdoors, using mosquito netting and eliminating any sites with standing water in and around the home. However, there is still no vaccine and no cure for dengue. The best way to survive dengue fever is to get to a hospital as soon as symptoms suggest an infection. Today, Boh Plantation has three tea gardens – Habu, the Fairly Tea Garden and the Sungai Palas Tea Garden.
