Recycling protects the earth by enabling the reuse of paper which will save millions of trees. Recycling also saves a lot of energy because many things can easily be converted into new materials. Hence, it saves a lot of resources too and reduces the burden of the environment. There are many ways to encourage recycling among students. Firstly, we should keep recycling bins to promote the usage of each bin. Secondly, we should also encourage more recyclable items to be sold in local shops. Next, schools should ban the usage of plastic bags in their vicinity. In conclusion, there are many benefits of recycling. Recycling helps in conserving natural resources, saving energy, reducing pollution, and creating employment opportunities. Not to forget, as the saying goes, the world that we live in today is borrowed from the future generation, we shall ensure that the environment is protected from any danger. Part 3 Question 3 The ‘Shantique’ is a Malay restaurant situated in the heart of the capital city, Alor Setar. It is the favourite hangout place for people from all walks of life. As you enter the place, you are welcomed by amazing setting and decorations! There is also some framed feedback by previous customers. Sitting in any table, you will have a wonderful view of the clean kitchen where you can see the chefs working. For those who are waiting for a table, there is a cosy lounge with traditional bamboo chairs and pictures of Malay delicacies displayed on the walls. There are more than 50 types of seafood and non-seafood dishes in their ever-expanding menu. Patrons can choose their favourite seafood to be cooked in Malay, Thai or Western styles. The menu offers a wide variety of mouth-watering starters too. I had the famous keropok lekor accompanied by their well-known Thai sauce, while my friend tried the kerabu. I strongly recommend their mixed seafood tom yum. Then, we had the delicious ais kacang served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert. They were all exquisite. All the products were fresh and the dishes had the warmth of home-made food. The chefs take great care in selecting the best quality ingredients. The restaurant also caters for all tastes by providing a large selection of the best seafood galore of the region, which are pricy but worth tasting. Nonetheless, the service was quite below average. You can hardly get a smile out of the waiters. Thankfully, the owner is always around sweetly greeting all her customers. Despite the high price of the food and the not-so-attentive waiters’ service, I had a pleasant dining experience with food of the most exquisite flavours. For this reason, I highly recommend going to this restaurant. ‘Shantique’ is truly amazing! Question 4 The phenomenon of students under pressure is evident from the behaviour of those students affected. I am a student and I know when my friends are under pressure. Some of those active ones will suddenly turn passive. Some will become too quiet while some tend to get angry fast. There are many ways one can get rid of stress. Firstly, students, especially teenagers, must go for regular exercise. A brisk walk in the park would release a lot of tension. Students should play football, hockey, basketball and badminton to reduce stress. Exercise is also said to relax the body muscles and keep them calm. Students must have hobbies such as reading, collecting stamps, fishing or listening to music of their choice. These leisure activities help keep students free from schoolrelated stress. Therefore, students should plan a timetable. They can also work in groups to solve some of their academic problems. Besides making friends and discussing certain issues, group discussions can help improve study skills. One of these is the ability to make a checklist of all the activities planned and carried out. This in turn will make studying more effective and avoid unnecessary pressure. Students should also have balanced meals and enough sleep. These are said to be basic to healthy lives. Students, especially those in examination classes, must sleep and eat well because a healthy body creates a healthy mind. However, the process of going to sleep can sometimes be difficult. Hence, it is necessary to seek advice from those whom we trust and love. Counsellors in school are helpful, but you can always talk to your family first. However, if nothing works, there is a need to seek treatment from the relevant authorities. You may be surprised but a friend of mine said that screaming at the mountains and laughing your heart out can take away stress. Remember, laughter is the best medicine! Question 5 There are many beautiful days in my life, but the best is December 15, 2021 as I had a very serious disease, Covid-19 and I was about to die. Therefore, I consider the day that I recovered from Covid-19 as the best and most beautiful day of my life. The story began when I attended my cousin’s wedding. I was very happy for him, and after a few sessions of photography, I participated in singing and dancing. Everyone present was happy, singing and dancing at the end of the party. I congratulated my cousin and his bride before I left. The next day, I felt a little tired but I thought I had the flu. I did not care about it, and at two o’clock at night, my temperature rose and I felt severe pain in my back. My whole body was in pain, I could hardly move and felt very weak. Then, I remembered that I was not wearing a mask at the wedding, so I suspected that those were the symptoms of Corona (Covid-19). So, I immediately went to the hospital, I was alone and did not tell any of my family members because I did not want them to be worried. In the hospital, I was examined and the doctor told me that they suspected I had been infected with the Covid-19, and a swab test was required immediately. I got dizzy on my way to the lab and suddenly, I collapsed! I went into a coma and my health condition deteriorated, stayed in the intensive care room for 10 days. The doctors and nurses took great care of me. My health improved and I recovered completely from the disease. I considered the day I got rid of this dangerous disease as the best day of my life and decided to celebrate that day every year. Paper 3 Speaking Part 1 Phase 1 (Accept any suitable response.) Air pollution is created solely by human beings, taking the form of emissions from factories, cars, planes, or aerosol cans. Even cigarette smoke can be considered pollution. Humans are irresponsible towards mother earth. The effects of air pollution are alarming. They are known to create several respiratory and heart conditions like asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart attacks and strokes along with cancer, among other threats to the body. Several million are known to have died due to the direct or indirect effects of air pollution. Anybody can take steps to reduce air pollution. Taking public transportation instead of driving a car, or riding a bike instead of travelling in carbon monoxide-emitting vehicles are a couple of ways to reduce air pollution. Avoiding aerosol cans, recycling yard trimmings instead of burning them, and not smoking cigarettes are others. Candidate B I would like to talk about water pollution. Water pollution has become a continuous threat and issue on Earth and affects all animals and humans majorly in all aspects. Water pollution is the contamination of toxic elements and impurities in water generated due to human activities. Water pollution is a serious problem threatening the world, and to find a solution, we will need to work hand in hand. Water pollution occurs through many sources such as agricultural, industrial, and other human activities. To stop water pollution, we need to control activities and follow drastic changes in our habits to help us save water and Mother Earth. Candidate B The person that I admire most is my grandfather. His name is Michael George Albert. He is an oncologist in Penang General Hospital. I lived with him ever since he was transferred to Penang in 2010. My grandfather is such a loving and caring person, not only towards my family but also everyone he meets. He has never looked down on anyone. I admire that most. He does his own laundry even though he can afford a maid. His first task in the morning is to pray and prepare a delicious cup of coffee for everyone. He is a man with brains and passion. For me, it is important to have a role model because I can emulate all the positive traits like the person I look up to. For a start, I am definitely good at making coffee just like him. Candidate A When it comes to me, the person I admire most in the world is my mother. We all have people whom we consider to be highly inspirational and influential to look upon, and in my case, my mother is an excellent example of these characters. She is an extraordinary person in my life because of her enduring strength that I dearly admire, and she is also kind as well as supportive. One thing I most admire about my mother for is her strength, which appears to be resistant throughout hard times. My mother is a single mother, and she has managed to raise three children all by herself, providing us with a good life and education, while still balancing work. My mother is a strong spirited person, kind-hearted, has unbreakable strength and very supportive. Special people like my mother exist to make our lives better and to mould us to become a better version of ourselves. Part 3 (Accept any suitable response.) © Penerbit Ilmu Bakti Sdn. Bhd. (732516-M) 2023 •A4• The most important benefit of reading Candidate B I strongly believe that the most important benefit is it makes our communication skills better. Reading is one of the best sources of continuous learning, knowledge gathering and idea sharing. Books and articles give us the ability to roam throughout the world, travel back in time and look to the future, affording us with a deeper view of ideas, concepts, practices, emotions and events. Reading can open our mind to new choices that we may not have known about or considered before. Thus, this information can then be shared with others. The more we read, the more likely we are to come across new words. Candidate A Yes, I totally agree with you. Reading also exposes us to vocabulary and grammar which improve our ability to write and speak the language. Furthermore, reading teaches us new words and perspectives. It helps strengthen language and sharpens sentence structure. It gives us a better command over the language. Therefore, reading does certainly improve oral and written communication skills. Candidate B As a conclusion, we agree that the most important benefit of reading is, it makes our communication skills better? Candidate A Yes, we do. Thank you. Candidate B Thank you. Promoting reading habits among students Candidate A In my opinion, taking a field trip to libraries or places surrounded by books will motivate students to read. This is one way to make reading collective and exciting. We can visit school library, a public library or a bookshop. It’s not about checking out or buying books, but it’s about being surrounded by thousands of books, touching their gorgeous pages and seeing the world of possibilities in print. My family and I often take weekend trips to explore different bookshops in our area. It’s just fun. Candidate B In addition, parents and teachers should help us to find reading materials that are related to our interests or hobbies. For example, the books in the library should be exciting and up-to-date. Promoting e-book will be an added advantage as well. Teenagers like us are often glued to gadgets. Books can be downloaded onto our laptop, smartphone, or smart device, making it easier than ever before to get reading materials. They can always read anywhere, anytime. I always believe that teenagers should be given the privilege to choose his or her own reading materials. This will definitely promote reading habits. Chew Yen Part 2 Question 2 Road Safety by Suzana Sariman Road safety awareness is crucial because it helps reduce the number of injuries and deaths on our roads. Road safety refers to all efforts to prevent road accidents and protect the road users especially students. The most important factor of road safety is the need for skillful and cautious driving so that passengers, pedestrians and drivers stay safe. Developing better roads is also important to avoid road accidents. When cars are designed with speed in mind, they are more likely to be involved in a crash, so careful driving is very essential. Ensuring everyone is safe on the road is important in keeping people’s lives safe from accidents. Driving is the standard way of transportation in today’s world. If someone injures themselves in a road accident, it can be the result of not following the road safety measures. Hence, it is important to follow road safety rules and drive safely. To sum it up, everyone must follow the road rules. Do not drive at excessive speed and try to enhance the general awareness so risks of traffic accidents can be reduced. One must also check the vehicle health regularly and its maintenance parts to eliminate any potential risks. Part 3 Question 3 Benefits of Exercising Exercise is basically any physical activity that we perform on a repetitive basis for relaxing our body and taking away all the mental stress. It is important to do regular exercise. When you do this on a daily basis, you become fit both physically and mentally. Exercise is one of the most important factors in a person’s life. The benefits of exercise are countless. The positive health results, the improvement in attitude, and even better academic performance are all factors which make not exercising inexcusable. © Penerbit Ilmu Bakti Sdn. Bhd. (732516-M) 2023 •A6• Exercise has a lot of benefits in today’s world. First of all, it helps in maintaining your weight. Moreover, it also helps you reduce weight. It is because you burn calories when you exercise. Furthermore, it helps in developing your muscles. Thus, the rate of your body will increase which helps to burn calories. Moreover, it also helps in improving the oxygen level and blood flow of the body. When you exercise daily, it helps you grow new brain cells in the hippocampus. Moreover, it is the part of the brain which helps to learn and control memory. This will ultimately lower the danger of disease like Alzheimer’s. In addition, you can also reduce the strain on your heart through exercise. Finally, it controls the blood sugar levels of your body so it helps to prevent or delay diabetes. In order to live life healthily, it is essential to exercise for mental and physical development. Thus, exercise is important for the overall growth of a person. It is essential to maintain a balance between work, rest and activities. So, make sure to exercise daily. Question 4 I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith Dodie Smith’s novel I Capture the Castle is a journey through the mind of a young writer as she attempts to narrate her daily life. Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain has recently learned to speed-write, and she decides to work on her writing skills by describing the actions and conversations of those around her. Cassandra lives in a fourteenth-century English castle with an interesting cast of characters: her beautiful older sister, Rose; her rather unsociable author father and his second wife, artist-model Topaz; Stephen, the garden boy; a cat and a bull terrier; and sometimes her brother Thomas when he is home from school. One fateful day, they make the acquaintance of the Cotton family, including the two sons, and a web of tangled relationships ensues. Over the course of the novel, Cassandra undergoes a definite transformation from child to mature young adult, even though it’s only over the course of several months. I love that I could see into her mindset and read exactly what she was feeling when she thought out situations. Her thoughts flowed well and moved the book along very quickly. Cassandra’s narrative voice is wonderful. She is serious at times, but also very witty, which makes for an engaging read. It feels absolutely real, as though I’m reading someone’s actual journal. Sometimes I forget that I am reading a story and not a real-life account. Her emotions and the dialogue are so genuine, and they are spot on for a seventeen-year-old girl in her situation. Cassandra has many wonderful insights on life, on topics ranging from writing about faith to matters of the heart. I personally have had some of the same thoughts as Cassandra, except Ms Smith was able to put them into words. In conclusion, I Capture the Castle should be essential reading for aspiring writers, those looking for historical fiction or anyone who loves reading amazing classic books. Dodie Smith is an exceptional writer, and I Capture the Castle is a book that will never become obsolete. Question 5 Having held the interschool storytelling championship for the past three consecutive years, I was the star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year. Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged unanimously that I would undoubtedly emerge as the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited. I was so complacent that I neglected the importance of practising for the contest. “Suzy, would you like to come in front of the class to rehearse for the contest?” asked my teacher, a week before the contest was held. “I’m sorry, teacher,” I replied. “I’m having a sore throat.” That was what I would do, whenever my teacher requested me to practise in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing so as I had the opinion that I was too good and therefore, the practice was quite unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told her not to worry as I was well prepared for the contest. I only managed to glance briefly through the story a day before the day of the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practise and expected everything to be fine. The contest was arranged to take place in a community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was packed. Apart from my school teachers and principal, many of my classmates and schoolmates were present as well. I was the eighth contestant. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their captivating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms perspired heavily and I felt nervous. Soon, it was my turn to talk. When I was facing the crowd, I suffered from stage fright. My legs shivered and so did my voice. I spoke in an expressionless voice and even stuttered a few times as I had forgotten some parts of the story. On seeing my terrible performance, the judges shook their heads. The supporters from my school looked at me in disappointment. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. In the end, I walked off the stage with my eyes filled with tears. When the results were announced after the contest, I did not win any prizes – not even a consolation prize. It was not surprising at all. I regretted underestimating my opponents. I had learnt my lesson well and finally understood the meaning of the saying, pride goes before a fall. Paper 3 Speaking Part 1 Phase 1 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Candidate A Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into reusable objects to prevent waste of potentially useful materials. In short, recycling means converting waste material into something usable. Recycling helps conserve the Earth’s natural resources like raw materials, minerals, trees, etc. It protects natural habitats for the future and preserves natural resources for future generations. In addition, recycling keeps litter overflow to a minimum keeping the Earth looking beautiful. People can even make money by collecting approved materials to a nearby recycling facility that will pay for the product. Products like glass, paper, plastic and metals such as aluminium and steel are all usually recycled. The first way to motivate people to recycle is by making it accessible to everyone. That is because if people find the public recycling bins quite inaccessible to them, they lose all interest to take action and recycle. Secondly, educate the people, especially the children. Teach them the importance of recycling. Starting them at a young age proves to be important because it wires their brain to recycle for the rest of their lives. Getting people to recycle will require lots of effort and repetitive convincing. Candidate B In my view, recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. When we recycle, we lessen disruption to the natural world. When we cut down fewer trees and forests, we are preventing harm to animals. By reducing disruption and damage to the natural world, we help preserve ecosystems and wildlife. Recycling waste is much cheaper than regular waste collection and disposal. The more we recycle, the more money we can save. We should encourage recycling from young and the best place is school. Therefore, schools should have recycling bins to encourage students to dispose of their recyclable waste. It’s essential that these recycling bins are clearly labelled and accessible around the school. Educating people, especially students, about protecting the environment can help equip future generations with the knowledge and understanding that they really need to recycle. Candidate B I would like to talk about Deepavali, the Festival of Lights. It is celebrated in October or November by Hindus all over the world. On the day of Diwali, my family and I visit temple in our traditional attire. We light our homes with ‘diyas’, an oil lamp made from clay. We light them by using a cotton wick dipped in ghee or oil. This is one of the reasons that Diwali is called ‘The Festival of Lights’. This signifies the victory of good over evil and the dispelling of darkness. We also share sweets with our friends and family. Deepavali is celebrated by Hindus throughout the globe. The way it is celebrated remains the same. The best thing that I like about this celebration is lighting up crackers and playing around with siblings and friends. Not forgetting the mouth-watering food that my mother prepares. This has made the celebration awesome and nostalgic too. Candidate A When it comes to me, I love ‘Hari Raya Puasa’ or Eid alFitr. Eid al-Fitr is the most important festival celebrated by Muslims around the world. It marks the end of the month of Ramadan. Ramadan is the holy month of fasting for us, Muslims. It is the ninth month in the Muslim calendar. After the completion of the month, when the new moon is seen, the celebration of Eid starts. On the day of the Eid, my family and I dress up in new Malay traditional clothes and go to mosque for special prayers. They offer special prayers for peace and prosperity of all. People visit relatives’ and friends’ homes. They all exchange gifts with one another. Some of the special dishes like ketupat and lemang are prepared during the festival. They are served among the family members and the relatives. Eid is celebrated in great joy and happiness. The festival is a day of joy and thanksgiving. It is a festival of love and compassion. Part 3 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Reasons why people travel Candidate A There are many advantages where travelling is concerned. One of them is, travelling opens your mind because you begin to see how people do things differently than you and still get by. We become so accustomed to how we do things that we believe it is the only way, and that anyone who acts differently is inferior. Travelling changes this. From big things such as religious practices to small things such as how you order your food, travelling opens you up to all types of changes. That broadens our horizons. Secondly, it gives you a chance to learn new languages and cultures. It lets you know about other languages and simply find out how to understand people better. When you visit other places and meet different people, it allows you to learn new culture, tradition and how to behave. Do you agree with my points? What do you think? Candidate B I do agree with your points. Well, for me, I love to travel because it can boost my confidence. In other words, travelling usually pushes me to try new things. I have even tried bungee jumping. It also compels me to confidently mingle with the local people. I have always been an introvert but after my travels, I became more sociable. So, I believe that travelling can boost one’s confidence. Apart from that, travelling also allows us to relax and revitalise. Travelling gives you the opportunity to step away from the daily routine and chore, thus, can escalate one’s pleasure and happiness. It’s obvious that travel comes with a countless of health benefits for the mind, body and soul. Firasat KM SPM Eng Ans 4th.indd 7 15/6/2023 9:05:58 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
© Penerbit Ilmu Bakti Sdn. Bhd. (732516-M) 2023 •A8• The best advantage of travelling Candidate B I strongly believe that the most important point is through travel, we can broaden our horizons. As you have mentioned earlier, it helps in exploring the world from different perspectives and adds a character to the existing knowledge of the individuals. In short, travel provides a learning experience like no other. It inspires people to seek out new places, keeping their pool of knowledge constantly topped up. It’s a great way to not only learn new things and immerse yourself in a new culture. I am sure that you would agree with me on this! Candidate A Yes, I do. To add, one of the best parts about travelling is meeting other like-minded people who are also interested in seeing the rest of the world for themselves. We can use our shared experiences as conversation starters or to relate to each other in various circumstances when we couldn’t otherwise. Travelling is a great way to learn more about other people’s lifestyles and to experience new things. By travelling, we can gain new perspectives on the world. Candidate B As a conclusion, we agree that the best advantage is that travelling broadens our horizons. Candidate A Yes, we do. Thank you. Candidate B Thank you. Promoting local travels or travelling within the country Candidate A As far as I am concerned, to promote local tourism, we have to identify and highlight the unique benefits that the place offers and how it can suit all walks of life. For example, Sabah is famous for its wildlife sanctuary and beautiful mountains. We can promote these places through websites and attractive brochures. The mass media has a big and important role to play in promoting local tourism. What is your opinion? Candidate B In my opinion, a clean tourist destination attracts more tourists. As responsible citizens of this country, we should keep our locality neat and clean. Tourists would not want to spend time in a place where hygiene is compromised and litter is seen all over the place. The government should be stringent in enforcing laws to make sure that nobody throws garbage on the roads and lanes. Apart from that, our country must be safe to visit too. No one wants to spend their hard-earned money in a place where their lives and the lives of their loved ones would be under potential threat. These are a few important measures to be taken to promote tourism. Paper 4 Listening No Answer Justification 1 C Clue – I’ve not seen you before. Mark Part 2 Question 2 The Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media In this modern era, everyone is so much into social media especially teenagers. Social media has become a part and parcel of everyone’s life. Social media platforms can help teenagers find answers to educational questions they have that may or may not be covered in school. It allows teens to access advice from professionals in different fields without actually having to ask anyone anything. It’s possible that social media can actually help some people gain more creativity than they would have had if they didn’t have the ability to access social media. As social media has grown more available to everyone, it has become increasingly susceptible to being hacked. Many users connect with strangers, post essential details about their life on the internet, and are ignorant of the dos and don’ts of having a social network account. In addition, lots of people use social media to spread fake news or stories which sometimes can be cruel, especially on teenagers. Teenagers have to be wise and responsible social media users. They should have the ability to believe in reliable sources for news content. Another wise thing to do on social media is not sharing their personal information. In conclusion, there are numerous advantages and disadvantages of social media for teenagers. They have to be disciplined and courteous in their use of social media to maximise the benefits of social media rather than fall prey to its disadvantages. Part 3 Question 3 Pros and Cons of Online Learning As with most teaching methods, online learning also has its own set of positives and negatives. Understanding these positives and negatives will help schools and students create Firasat KM SPM Eng Ans 4th.indd 9 15/6/2023 9:05:58 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Although many people still consider traditional classes as the best way for learning, in this technological age, online classes prove to be a great alternative. In an online class, students have the chance to study from the ease of their home. Students can take classes at the time they prefer as most of the classes are recorded. Online classes help students to learn whenever they want to learn, leaving them the freedom to choose the time for study. The main work of personality development of students can be done through traditional classes. In online classes, these are missing. Online learning does not offer face-to-face human interaction which is very important for personality development. Online classes can be difficult for some who don’t know the proper use of technology. For small children, online classes require great discipline and practice. It also involves more interventions of parents. In online classes, students use electronic devices like mobile, tablet, laptops or computer. Use of these devices for a long time will badly affect the health of students. Online learning is important based on a number of reasons. Firstly, without going outside, students can learn each and every subject, even sitting at home. Secondly, online classes save the time and money of travelling. Moreover, online classes offer flexible schedule that permits students to study at their own convenience. Students can gain knowledge only by watching the videos of any subjects at any time. The learning is continuous as well. Question 4 Lord of the Rings By Keisha Ratnam All the threads of Tolkien’s magnum opus come together in the most elegant of fashions in the final part of Peter Jackson’s adaptation. Humanity makes a last stand at Minas Tirith, the Hobbits travel through Mordor, our heroes try to buy time for Frodo to complete his mission and the Evil Sauron gets tired of the whole game and lashes out with all his might and fury. Return of the King is 4 hours of payoff, a third act in a gigantic epic rather than a mere film of its own. As such, it is intensely dramatic and dynamic and you can very much sense that though Peter Jackson spared no effort on the previous episodes, this is clearly his favourite. The film floats by at a thunderous pace, taking us through unforgettable moments such as the battle of Minas Tirith itself, a marvel of seamless animation and epic filmmaking, it demands to be seen, as it has too many jaw-dropping moments to choose from. The cast of these films have played their parts to perfection and again, Jackson deserves overall credit for choosing actors that so perfectly match Tolkien’s creations: Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee are their own usually excellent selves, and the hobbits remain endearing, but of all the uniformly great cast, the true standouts are Viggo Mortensen and David Wenham as the tragic Faramir, whose relationship with his brutish father is the most traumatic of the film. After 8 years, Jackson has done the impossible: he has taken Tolkien’s huge legend and made films that stand on their own and have revolutionised filmmaking, setting the new benchmark for cinematic epics. A masterpiece, whether as part of a bigger whole or on its own. Question 5 A Memorable Day We have different types of days in our lives, some are ordinary while some are special. There are some days that get etched in our memories forever. Likewise, I also have a memorable day of my life that is very dear to me. The memories are engraved in my heart and will remain so forever. I still remember that wonderful feeling I had as soon as I saw the gift my father brought me. I woke up to my mother’s voice asking me to go down because my father wanted me to do something important. I was feeling sleepy and I refused to get up from bed but my mother’s persistent scream forced me to be up and about. I went to the living room where my father was standing near the sofa with a big box beside him, wrapped beautifully. I was over the moon! I could sense some movement in the box. I could not hide my excitement anymore. I quickly opened the box to find inside a beautiful Persian cat. I jumped with joy. That was indeed a precious moment. I wanted the cat so much. I could not believe that my father went all the way to get it for me. I can’t describe the feelings of happiness in me. Tears of happiness came rolling down my cheeks. Upon noticing that, my mum and dad hugged me for a long time. They told me that they would do anything to see me happy. That was the best moment in my life. A memorable day indeed! •A11• Firasat SPM 2023: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) – Answers Who is your role model? My role model is my English teacher, Ms Hayat. Why do you like this person? She is dedicated, responsible and most importantly, caring. I want to be like her because she has her own style and everyone loves her for that. Part 2 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Candidate A Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is one of my favourite movies. It is a wonderful introductory movie of the Harry Potter series with an amazing feeling of discovery. It has an amazing storyline and is an exciting fantasy movie. The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter with Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. Magic has always fascinated me and this movie is all about magic. This movie is based on the cheeky Rowling novel of the same name. The story is about a boy named Harry Potter who finds out that he is a wizard, Harry gets his first wand and goes to study in a magic school Hogwarts. There, he learns everything about magic and makes good friends with Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. The movie little tells us the challenges Harry faces when Voldemort returns. This movie has been my favourite since I first saw it on television five years ago, although I have seen all the movies in the Harry Potter series, this movie is still my favourite. I normally go to the cinema to catch the latest movies but nowadays, I prefer Netflix. Nothing like sitting in our own cosy home and watching our favourite movies. Candidate B I prefer animated films. Frozen is a Disney animated musical that I enjoy watching till now. As in many Disney movies, the parents die, here leaving orphaned princesses who must find a way to survive. So, this is how the story goes: When their kingdom becomes trapped in perpetual winter, fearless Anna joins forces with mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer sidekick to find Anna’s sister, Snow Queen Elsa, and break her icy spell. Although their epic journey leads them to encounters with mystical trolls, a comedic snowman, harsh conditions, and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff bravely push onward in a race to save their kingdom from winter’s cold grip. There are a few other violent scenes that involve men with weapons, snarling wolves, a scary snow monster, a severe storm, and a character who nearly freezes to death. Messages include unconditional love between sisters after a long estrangement, being true to yourself, recognising your gifts, and not being afraid of your power. As mentioned by candidate A, I too prefer Netflix. It reduces travel expenses and we can watch movies that we like. It’s safe too. Candidate B I have many interesting holiday destinations that I want to visit but the first is none other than Pulau Tioman in Pahang. I have to get to Mersing and grab one of the Bluewater Express ferries over to the island. Tioman is home to some of the most gorgeous views and pristine beaches. Apart from that, it offers amazing attractions to stop by and adventurous things to do. The island offers serene views, spellbinding attractions, and thrilling activities to give me an experience like never before. I want to explore the commercial hub of Kampung Tekek and go scuba diving at the Tioman Dive Centre. These are two of the best Tioman Island activities that I just cannot afford to miss! I have read so much about these activities. Apart from these, I can also visit the beautiful beaches during sunset. It will definitely be enchanting! Candidate A It is none other than Kundasang, Sabah. I love mountains and cold weather. I want to experience the cold climate in Kundasang. We can travel to Kota Kinabalu by flight and there, we can hire a van or car, depending on the number of travellers, to travel to Kundasang. If I want to experience New Zealand without breaking the bank, then Kundasang is the place to be. Surrounded by immense green rolling fields and nature in the pasture, Kundasang is a cheaper version of New Zealand with not-so-obvious differences. I can see the free-roaming cows and visit the Desa Dairy Farm and try all sorts of milk products, such as ice cream, yogurt, bottled milk, and even cheese! I can also enjoy Fish Massages and learn to withstand the tickle. Moroli River near Sabah Tea Garden is a river filled with the fishes that will make my skin silky smooth. My favourite destination is definitely Kundasang! Part 3 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Reasons why teenagers love extreme sports Candidate A There are many advantages in teenagers doing extreme sports. One of them is, extreme sports boost our self-confidence. Extreme sports enable us to overcome difficult physical challenges. After all, it’s not easy to climb a mountain. But if we can complete these challenges, our rewards will be much more than merely physical. The self-confidence boost can have a positive impact on every aspect of our life, which makes extreme sports a good idea for teenagers who are physically capable of meeting the applicable challenges. In addition, by doing extreme sports, we can gain the ability to stay centred. Extreme sports can push us to our physical and mental limits. Teenagers who regularly perform feats such as bungee jumping actually change the normal routine of their mind. When this happens, we become more capable of staying calm and centred during stressful situations. In other words, extreme sports can make the rest of our life easy to manage. Do you agree with my points? What do you think? Candidate B I do agree with your points. Well, for me, I like to add that extreme sports offer social interactions. For example, we can make many new friends and they could come from all walks of life. The possibilities of us to learn and share are there. Thus, we can become sociable and that can help in enlarging our circle of friends. Playing extreme sports also demands much mental energy. This means when we are rock climbing, a lot of our cognitive skills will be used in the process. There is a fine line between safety and danger while doing a specific movement; a lot of attention and concentration is needed to move safely. My reason for saying this is over time, our attention span will improve. Memory is also improved when learning to play Firasat KM SPM Eng Ans 4th.indd 11 15/6/2023 9:05:58 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

If our attention is improved, then our concentration is improved, which in turn gives us a better memory. Isn’t it amazing? Such learning lives on forever. The best benefit of extreme sports Candidate B I strongly believe that the most important point is it can boost one’s confidence. Why do I say that? As a teenager myself, I considered myself an introvert and would never attempt anything new but with my exposure to extreme sports, I am more confident in making new ventures. By the way, I do inline skating. Extreme sports truly bring out the best in a teenager. What is your opinion? Candidate A I agree to your point. This is because it’s not easy to pick up an extreme sport as it requires teenagers to push themselves to their physical and emotional limits. But by powering through and mastering one of these sports, we can build our confidence, as well as our trust in our abilities. If I feel like I lack self-esteem and want to prove to myself that I can venture to the edge of my limits, I will definitely look for an extreme sport that will mentally, emotionally, and physically challenge me. Candidate B As a conclusion, we agree that the best benefit is it can boost one’s confidence. Candidate A Yes, we do. Thank you. Candidate B Thank you. Promoting extreme sports among teenagers in Malaysia Candidate A I am certain that extreme sports among teenagers can be promoted through extracurricular activities. We can select a few sports to be practised in schools, namely rock climbing and inline skating. We do not need special venue or equipment for certain extreme sports. Thus, we can manage with the walls of the school or the volleyball court. What do you think? Do you agree with me? Candidate B Yes precisely, you have got a brilliant point there. In addition, parents must play a vital role in exposing teenagers to these kinds of sports. Parents should also be able to know their children’s preferences. As mentioned by candidate A, we don’t need a special place or expensive equipment to do extreme sports. Teenagers can indulge in other extreme sports such as water rafting, bungee jumping and skydiving according to their locality and availability. These extreme sports may be pricey but worth the try. So, creating awareness may be another point to consider. Paper 4 Listening No Answer Justification 1 B Clue – It’s urgent. 2 C Clue – Well, I should have left an hour ago. Arun Part 2 Question 2 A Famous Person: Lionel Messi I never really gave much thought to who my favourite football player is until I saw Lionel Messi for the first time. I saw him play for Argentina and he showed me how great football really is. Lionel Messi was introduced to the competitive football world at the tender age of 5. His older brother’s friends would go outside and play football and Lionel would play with them. This was the start of a legend. He went to play for Newell’s Old Boys and Barcelona. He is also in the Argentinian World Cup team. In 2022, Argentina won the World Cup after 36 years and the best player was none other than Messi! He has a prodigious style of both teamwork and individual skill. The ability he has to keep control of the ball is magnificent. Lionel Messi, in my opinion, is one of the greatest football players in history. There came a time in his career where Messi could have easily shot the ball into the net himself, but instead, he passed the ball to a player who had never scored before. The player did indeed score and Messi celebrated along with the other players. This showed me that it is better to lose as a team than to win as an individual. No matter where Lionel Messi is, on the field or off, he always has a good attitude and shows sportsmanlike conduct towards the opposing team. Lionel Messi is a role model to people all across the world. Part 3 Question 3 My Ideal School I am sure that everyone has their own notion of what an ideal school is. In my opinion, an ideal school would consist of a building with an ultra-modern infrastructure and topnotch facilities. It would look more like a resort rather than a typical school. All the classrooms would have colourful walls with wonderful paintings. To ensure optimum productivity, Firasat KM SPM Eng Ans 4th.indd 13 15/6/2023 9:05:59 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
© Penerbit Ilmu Bakti Sdn. Bhd. (732516-M) 2023 •A14• it would also be great if the number of students in a class is limited to 20 per class rather than the present 40 or 50 per class. Apart from that, we also need a well-equipped library with the state-of-art facilities for students to conduct their research and studies. The library should be filled with books and materials on a wide range of topics. Computer cataloguing should also be introduced to make referencing easier. Furthermore, the school should also provide free Internet services to students, a sophisticated gymnasium and sports centre. Students nowadays are burdened with homework and endless examination. An idyllic school should provide students with space for creativity, innovation and spiritual growth. More constructive and productive homework should be given instead of burdening homework. Students should be encouraged to understand their homework and find joy and fun in doing them. Students should not be doing homework for the sake of doing them. In addition, traditional art and culture classes should also be held in the ideal school to nurture the spirit of appreciation amongst students. Moreover, to maximise the students learning capacities, lessons should start at 8.00 a.m. Timetable should not be packed and hectic. In this era of globalisation, ICT is of utmost importance. Students should each be given a notebook. Heavy school bags and tonnes of books should be a thing of the past. The notion of ideal is sometimes painfully defined as an idea existing only in imagination and is not likely to come true. The 21st century promises a lot for individuals from all walks of life. The idea might seem far-fetched at the moment. However, it is my belief that if each and every one of us were to reach in to find the best within ourselves and reach out to give the best education to our future generations, the idea of creating an ideal school would not merely remain a dream after all. Question 4 Magnificent Holiday Inn Melaka By Preisha Harin Holiday Inn Melaka is one of the newest hotels in Melaka that is centrally located and offers a great view of the Strait of Malacca. Boasting 275 rooms, the hotel makes an ideal option for those looking for a short getaway and corporate guests. My family and I stayed here over the weekend last month and enjoyed access to the range facilities and dining options available. It is located opposite the famous Mahkota Parade. Despite the high occupancy rate, check-in was a breeze. The staff were efficient and hospitable. Our deluxe room was spacious, with a lovely view of the Strait. The room comes with a safety deposit box, flat screen TV, toilet amenities, hair dryer, and coffee and tea making facilities. Holiday Inn Melaka offers facilities for disabled guests, complimentary parking as well as free shuttle service to tourist attractions. Besides exploring the historical offerings of Melaka, guests can also enjoy a massage at the Tea Tree Spa, work up a sweat at the gym or go for a swim at the outdoor swimming pool. The hotel has two dining options. One is Es. Sense for all-day dining and the other is, Sirocco for Italian food. Our dinner at Sirocco was a pleasant one and the food was quite decent. Buffet breakfast is available at Es. Sense, but since the hotel is often fully occupied, it gets quite overwhelming during peak times. I strongly suggest you get there before 8 a.m. or have your breakfast at 10 a.m. when the crowd is less. If you’re looking to enjoy a short weekend away in Melaka, Holiday Inn Melaka would be a good choice for accommodation because of its location. From the hotel, you can easily get to the array of Melaka hawker delights. Taking into consideration the hotel’s location and affordable pricing, this place is not to be missed! They looked suspicious. Suddenly, I heard a woman shouting, “Help! Help!” I looked around in that direction and saw one of them, a bigsized man held up a woman with a knife at her neck. He was trying take off her gold chain and the other man was taking out all the cash from the counter. I quickly hid behind a big tree and saw all that was happening. The two men were threatening the poor lady. She was crying and pleading for help. I raced to the nearest telephone booth and called the police. Just as I was putting down the phone, I saw two policemen on patrol. I told them what was happening. Immediately, they rushed to where the lady was. The robbers saw the police and took to their heels in different directions. The policemen chased them and managed to catch one of them. After a while, I heard a siren. A police car was chasing the other robber. The situation was intense! Finally, the second robber was also caught. The lady, still in panic, thanked me and the police congratulated me. They also praised me for my bravery and quick action. Paper 3 Speaking Part 1 Phase 1 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Candidate A What’s your name? My name is . Part 2 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Candidate A Generally, book reading is a very good habit that everyone should build. It helps to build confidence, gain inspiration, and motivation. My favourite is definitely Harry Potter, which is a fictional story series authored by British writer J. K. Rowling. She is an excellent writer. I am really surprised to see her imagination level. I have seen the movie series of this book too. That was mind-blowing. The story is fictional and different. It’s all about a wizarding world. Hermione Granger and Ron Weasly are my most favourite characters in this book. I love the Goblet of Fire most. This chapter is amazing. I love other chapters too, but this one seems special to me. Overall, I have been a huge fan of J. K. Rowling after reading this book. This fictional fantasy book has earned a huge amount of money. This book is loved by young people mostly because it is exciting, suspenseful, well-written and the characters are likeable. It’s quite different from other books in the fantasy genre and I think that’s what makes it so special. I normally buy books from Popular Bookshop during sale. Candidate B I prefer reading comics. My favourite is When I Was a Kid by Boey. It is a charming collection of black and white drawings and handwritten narratives that depict short stories from Boey’s childhood growing up in Malaysia. This graphic novel is filled with stories of surviving school, siblings, and parents from a time when the world was seen simply as black and white. The stories in the book are a reflection of his childhood spent growing up in Johor Bahru and crossing the causeway to attend school in Singapore in the 1980s. At 17, he packed his bags and headed to San Francisco to study and has gone on to establish his career there. The stories first appeared on his blog www.iamboey.com and the number of followers increased over the years encouraging Boey to compile some of the stories into his first book. Funny, poignant, honest, When I Was a Kid is illustrated in simple stick figures accompanied by short descriptions. It is super easy to read and each story is self-contained and can be read in any order. I used to read them online as I prefer e-books. My uncle gave me the paperback edition as a gift. Candidate B I definitely own a smartphone and it is Samsung Note Series. My smartphone has multiple functions. I would say that my phone is my alarm, my personal planner, my entertainment, so on and so forth. Well in short, my phone is my life. Smartphone is important because not only can I send texts, emails, and make calls, I have access to a full menu of computer capabilities as well. In other words, anything I can do on a computer, I can perform on a smartphone. Well, the final question is debatable but I still feel that students should be allowed to use smartphones in schools. It will make the learning better and fulfilled. Candidate A I own a Vivo. That was my birthday present. Well, my smartphone made my life much easier because with that, I can do everything. It combines a lot of things that I like a lot and I can do all of them in one single dispositive, and it is awesome! My life without this gadget would be boring and monotonous. All of my friends have a smartphone. Maybe that makes this gadget essential to me. I’m in contact with my friends all the time, we can share photos, music, videos and games. It also has made my life so easy for handling daily activities. Today, I can assess the live traffic situation on mobile phone and take appropriate decisions to reach school on time. Along with it the weather updates, booking a cab and many more. So, the benefits are numerous. The usage of smartphones should be allowed in schools. I believe that it increases the sense of safety of both students and parents. This is because there are some instances where they need to contact each other due to emergencies and it definitely makes learning enjoyable! Part 3 (Accept any suitable response.) Suggested answers: Ways to protect the environment Candidate A My first point is saying no to plastic bags and bring a reusable shopping bag. By using a reusable shopping bag, you can decrease the resources used on plastic bag production and disposal and protect the environment from plastic pollution. At the same time, you can save money, look stylish, and enjoy a better quality of life. Do you agree with my first point? My second point is planting trees. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change. Not only that, trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals. Let’s plant trees to save the environment. It is cheap too. Do you agree with my points? What do you think? Candidate B I do agree with your first and second points. Well, for me, it is definitely 3Rs – reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. We should always follow the 3Rs to conserve natural resources and landfill space. Recycling uses old products in new ways. Reduce means to minimise the amount of waste we create. Reuse refers to using items more than once. This would definitely protect our environment from further damage. We could also conserve water. Using water-saving techniques can save us money and diverts less water from our rivers, bays, and estuaries, which helps keep the environment healthy. It can also reduce water and wastewater treatment costs and the amount of energy used to treat, pump, and heat water. There are many ways to protect the environment. (732516-M) 2023 •A16• The best method to protect the environment Candidate B I strongly believe that the best method to protect the environment is by saying no to plastic bags. Plastic bags are a threat to our environment because a single plastic bag takes up to 1,000 years to decompose as it contains non-renewable petrochemicals. Hence, plastic bags will stay for a more extended period and damage our Mother Nature. It starts from us. We should start using recyclable bags. Do you agree? Candidate A I agree to your point. This is because plastic bags have become major items in the litter system. This has resulted in many detrimental environmental effects including animal choking, pollution, blockage of channels, rivers and streams, and landscape disfigurement. So, saying no to plastic bags will be my choice too. Candidate B As a conclusion, we agree that the best method to protect the environment is by saying no to plastic bags. Candidate A Yes, we do. Thank you. Candidate B Thank you. Educating teenagers on ways to protect the environment Candidate A I am certain that teenagers can drastically cut back on plastic by taking simple steps in their daily routine. When they go shopping, they can practice this with reusable grocery bags to help create an earth-friendly habit that is sustainable. Reusable straws, bags, water bottles and other items also make a big impact in reducing plastic waste. Practice makes perfect. What do you think? Do you agree with my point? Candidate B Yes precisely, you have got a brilliant point there. I would urge them to learn to use the public transport. I know every teen looks forward to a driver’s licence and a first car, but automobiles are one of the primary causes of air pollution. When pedal power won’t cut it, take the bus or carpool. It might not seem as cool as driving yourself, but it is much more fuel efficient. Thus, it saves the environment. So, make it a routine to use public transport or you can use your bicycle.
