Exam Tips Question 1 Coffee for Kids? The smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning is just the right push (0) factor to lead anyone out of bed. The popularity of coffee can be seen with the mushrooming of international coffeehouses such as Starbucks, PULP by Papa Palheta and Bean Brothers globally. It is estimated that 167.26 million 60 kilogramme bags of coffee were consumed (1) in 2020. Coffee is so popular but is it safe for children? The National Institute of Health in the United States is unhappy with the coffee addiction (2) children. This is because coffee is a stimulant and keeps the drinker alert as it (3) in the body for up to eight hours. However, children need eight hours of sleep. Drinking coffee may cause them to have sleep deprivation. In addition, coffee is acidic and can lead to cavities and tooth enamel erosion. Just imagine how (4) coffee can be to the children’s teeth. They may start experiencing oral problems at a tender age. Q&A SPM English-Unit 1 (Part 2-5).indd 20 12/24/22 7:03 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

31 Reading Unit 1 Question 1 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. Four zoo employees, who met their significant other during the course of work, held their wedding reception yesterday in the most familiar of surroundings – the zoo itself. Amid the sights and sounds of the zoo, the couples celebrated the occasion which was fully sponsored by the zoo at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Theatre, popularly known as the Kancil Hall, with other zoo staff in attendance. One of the couples, the zoo’s customer service executive, Mohamad Afiq and Nora Ismail, who works in the Zoology Department, first met at the zoo and became a couple after two years. The couple who tied the knot earlierin March, said they were happy to seal the union at the place they first met. They were both happy to celebrate the happy occasion with their colleagues, and what’s more, they were able to celebrate it among the animals which they love and care for on a daily basis. They were left speechless when the zoo management told them that they would bear the cost. The other couple is Mohd Hafiz and Suhana Ramli, who both work in the Zoology Department. They were both grateful for the unique experience. Mohd Hafiz said that he was proud that they have wedding pictures and videos unlike any other, which they will happily and proudly share with their family members, friends and children in the future. Suhana said that this was an experience that they would cherish all their lives and she thanked the zoo management for this delightful experience. The idea of hosting the double wedding at the zoo was mooted by the zoo’s Zoology and Veterinary Director. According to him, the zoo was studying the viability of hosting weddings at the zoo as an alternative means of generating income. This idea will be executed after Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year. He also said that they are considering allowing guests of such weddings and functions to be able to purchase tickets at 50 per cent off to enter the zoo as another means to attract even more visitors. The zoo was in dire need of funds during the Movement Control Order (MCO) where there was no revenue at all. The zoo and its animals were having trouble keeping afloat due to financial constraints. As the zoo is a non-governmental organisation (NGO), it depends solely on donations and ticket sales to cover its operating costs. The zoo has begun an adoption campaign for the care of their majestic animals, putting out posters of their many animals that still require daily care, food and medical attention. Through this campaign, the public can choose whether they want to donate one-off or on a monthly basis, according to the packages available. Among the glorious creatures up for adoption are Kayla the tiger, Omi the ring-tailed lemur, Choki the orangutan and Panjang the leopard. Those who donate will be presented with a certificate that will also include the name of the chosen animal, and their name will also be displayed on the zoo’s website. 32 Unit 1 Reading The zoo’s Deputy President said that the zoo’s animals were in good health and thanked those who had contributed to the zoo, which ran on public funds. Steps are being taken to attract visitors during Ramadan as there is an expected drop in the number of visitors. However, he is positive that there will be a very good number of visitors during the Hari Raya period and festive break. If you and your family are planning to have a joyful event like a birthday party or family gathering, why not have it at the zoo. If this is not appealing, visit the zoo with your family and friends. This will help the zoo increase its revenue which is used for the upkeep of the animals. Maybe the zoo should consider having ‘Selfie Competitions’ at the zoo to encourage the younger generation to appreciate these unique and amazing animals. Adapted from https://www.therakyatpost.com/2020/03/30/ zoo-negara-is-in-trouble-due-to-mco-restrictions-it-needs-your-help/ 1 The phrase sights and sounds in line 4 refers to the A zoo staff and their happy chatter. B couples and their merry laughter. C animals and the sounds they make. D wedding guests and their conversations at the Kancil Hall. 2 From paragraph 4, we know that the couple A celebrated the union in one of the spouse’s workplace. B were married prior to the wedding reception at the zoo. C declined the zoo management’s offer to bear the cost of the reception. D were aghast at the idea of celebrating the wedding with their colleagues. 3 In paragraph 5, the couple believed that A they have exceptional wedding pictures and videos. B they were startled by their wedding pictures and videos. C the zoo management took trivial wedding pictures and videos. D there was a huge commotion over their wedding pictures and videos. 4 Why did the zoo’s management host the double wedding? A To act as a tactic to raise revenue for the zoo. B To attract visitors to the zoo with a 50% discount. C To dishearten people to hold their weddings at the zoo. D To prevent people from hosting their weddings and functions at the zoo. 33 Reading Unit 1 5 From paragraph 7, the Movement Control Order (MCO) A left the zoo in a fiscal fiasco. B did not affect the zoo’s revenue. C resulted in the closure of the zoo. D saw donors contributing to the zoo. 6 The main idea of paragraph 8 is to A state the zoo’s donation policy. B describe the animals that are up for adoption. C deter the public from adopting the animals at the zoo. D reflect the zoo’s attempt to increase financial revenue. 7 In paragraph 10, the best word to replace upkeep is A prosperity. B sustenance. C abundance. D deprivation. 8 What is the writer’s purpose of writing this article? A To appeal to the public to donate to the zoo. B To highlight the zoo’s future endeavour for revenue growth. C To inform the public of the discount rates for the zoo entrance. D To encourage visitors to visit the zoo during the Hari Raya period and festive break. No Answer Analysis 1 C The entire phrase is ‘Amid the sights and sounds of the zoo’. From this phrase, we know that the writer is referring to the ‘sights and sounds’ made by the animals – seeing the animals and listening to the sounds they make. 2 B The clue is in the phrase ‘tied the knot earlier’ in line 10. This phrase tells us that the couple had married prior (earlier) to the wedding reception. 3 A The writer states that Mohd Hafiz was proud that they have wedding pictures and videos unlike any other. We know that they have exceptional wedding pictures and videos. 4 A The clue is in lines 2 – 4, paragraph 6. The writer mentions that the zoo was studying the viability of hosting weddings at the zoo as an alternative means of generating income. Generating income is synonymous to raising revenue. 5 A The clues are ‘financial constraints’ and ‘no revenue’. The zoo had no income during the MCO as it depended on donations and ticket sales. 34 Unit 1 Reading No Answer Analysis 6 D This paragraph talks about one way for the zoo to increase its revenue i.e. the adoption campaign (put up some of the animals for adoption so the donation money can be used for the maintenance of these animals). 7 B This is the most suitable answer as the synonym of ‘upkeep’ is sustenance. 8 B The article describes the financial constraints experienced by the zoo and the efforts made by the zoo management to increase its revenue. We can say that the writer wants to focus on the zoo’s attempt to increase the number of visitors as well as its income. Question 2 Question 1 to 8 are based on the following passage. Like people all over the world, the Chinese have special customs regarding dead people and their ghosts that are thousands of years old. The popular folk religion called Daoism includes days for dealing with errant ghosts in the land. When these ghosts visit the world in the seventh month of the lunar calendar, special precautions and ceremonies are necessary. The Hungry Ghost Festival is the most important festival of the Hungry Ghost month. The Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. This day falls in July or August in the Western calendar. In southern China, the Hungry Ghost Festival is celebrated by some on the 14th day of the seventh lunar month. The people there are said to have begun celebrating the festival a day earlier during a time of long warfare to avoid being attacked by enemies during the inauspicious day. The Hungry Ghost Festival is one of several traditional festivals in China to worship ancestors. Others include the Spring Festival, the Qingming Festival and the Double Ninth Festival. In Jiangxi Province and Hunan Province, the Hungry Ghost Festival is considered to be more important than the Qingming Festival and the Double Ninth Festival. The Taoist name for the Hungry Ghost Festival is the Zhongyuan Festival and the Buddhist call it the Yulanpen Festival. They perform special ceremonies to avoid the wrath of the ghosts such as putting the family’s ancestral tablets on a table, burning incense and preparing food three times that day. The main ceremony is usually held at dusk. People put the family’s ancestral tablets, old paintings and photographs on a table and then burn incense near them. Plates of food are put out for the ghosts on the table, and the people may kowtow in front of the memorial tablets and report their behaviour to their ancestors to receive a blessing or punishment. People also feast on this night, and they might leave a place open at the table for a lost ancestor. Besides, you love this sport. Even as a child, you would plead with Mum to let you skate on ice but Mum would refuse because she thought it was unsafe. Now that you are older, you can indulge in it. You would need a good pair of ice skates. You can rent them at the skating rink or you can buy them from Sports Galore at Maju Mall. Bye! Love, Bianca Part 2: Guided Writing Question 2 Model answer Conserving energy refers to reducing the usage of energy in our daily lives. It is everyone’s responsibility to conserve energy including students in schools. Electricity and water are essential sources of energy. 215 if possible. We must turn on the lights and fans only when necessary and turn them off when we are leaving the place. In fact, the teaching and learning process can be conducted outdoors where the teacher uses the discovery learning approach via problem solving. When using the bathroom, we should turn on the lights and taps when we are using them and turn them off when not in use. If we notice a leaking tap, we must inform our teacher so the problem can be arrested immediately. It is important to conserve energy to reduce pollution and create a healthy environment for future generations. Part 3: Extended Writing Question 3 Model answer Museums Museums are interesting as they display historical, scientific, artistic and cultural exhibits from yesteryear. Everyone should visit museums as they offer an in-depth experience of things in the past that are related to us. They offer a unique experience for everyone with varying interests. A musician will be able to understand his musical genre better by understanding the types of musical instruments used in the past. He will be able to evoke images in his mind via his senses. In this way, he can acquire far more knowledge than he could by simply reading about it or looking at pictures. Besides, museums can be used as a platform to generate discussions on a topic. For example, if the history topic is on the discussion of the ‘Peranakan’ culture, then by looking at the ornaments, clothes, weapons, crockery and a host of other exhibits, an on-going discussion can be conducted on the lifestyle of the Peranakans in the past and their lifestyle at present. This will be a great platform to initiate the discussion. Finally, museums can be a great place to bond with family and friends. Spend a lazy Sunday afternoon at the cool interiors of the museum. There can be great learning from each other as every person has a different perspective based on their knowledge and understanding. Museums are a great place to gain knowledge and information. So, make a beeline to the museum with your family and friends this weekend to learn and explore. Question 4 Model answer Yummy Curry Noodles I had the most delicious bowl of curry noodles at ‘Penang Delish’ in Moon Square Mall last week. It is a new outlet operated by a Penangite, Mr Sung. As soon as we ordered, the proprietor went abuzz preparing the order. He threw in some yellow noodles into a pot of boiling water. Then, he added the condiments plus a delectable curry. The curry was thick and creamy with a balance of sweet and savoury taste. The service was fast. Despite being full house, we received our curry noodles within 10 minutes of ordering them. After taking the first bite, I exclaimed “Wow!” It was as authentic as you could get with generous servings of noodles, gravy, prawns, tofu and cockles. As for the pricing, it was certainly affordable at RM10.90 for a large bowl of curry noodles. You could also opt for the smaller bowl which is RM7.90. I also liked the crockery especially the white porcelain bowls with the picture of a rooster on them. It reminded me of my grandmother’s crockery. A very nostalgic moment for me. The ambience was great Q&A SPM English-MT-Answers.indd 215 12/24/22 7:30 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
