However, when Devi started secondary school, her friend suggested that she read other genres. Therefore, recently Devi bought a fantasy storybook with the title Like a Charm. The book was written by Elle McNicoll. This book soon became her favourite storybook. Before that, Devi’s favourite storybook was House of Hollow which was written by Krystal Sutherland. Like a Charm takes place in Edinburgh which is a city filled with magical creatures. No one else can see these creatures except for Ramya Knox, the main character. She is soon pulled into her family’s world of secrets and spells and sets out to discover the truth behind the Hidden Folk. Devi liked this story because it was fresh and exciting. The Flood Adam lives with his family in a small village. During the recent monsoon season, the heavy rains caused the nearby river to overflow its banks. Not long after, the ground floor of Adam’s house began to flood. Adam, his parents and his little sister, Nina, hurriedly gathered some food and bottled water. They had wanted to gather some valuables but did not have the time. The family then went to the roof of their house. Within a few hours, all the homes and fields in the village were flooded. All the villagers waited patiently on the roofs of their houses for the rescue boats to arrive. Soon, the rescue boats came. Some families were taken to the primary school while Adam and his family were taken to the secondary school. Both the schools were on higher ground and were luckily not flooded. Adam and his family, together with the other villagers, stayed in the school hall for a few days. The villagers were told that they could go back home in about two days’ time. However, after a few technical difficulties, Adam and the villagers could only go home in three days’ time. The house was a mess but Adam and his family were grateful that they were not hurt. Practice 1 A Science Workshop Last month, SMK Taman Orkid organised a science workshop. Mrs Lim was the teacher-in-charge. However, she did not conduct the workshop. It was conducted by Mr Karthik who is a general science lecturer from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He has a master’s degree in Science from Universiti Putra Malaysia and an undergraduate degree in Science from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The workshop was held on 15 May. Many students were interested to join the workshop but places were limited. Those interested had to register with the teacher-in-charge before 5 May. The registration was full by 1 May. The workshop cost RM5 per student. The school also organised a workshop last year but the fee was RM10. The previous workshop was held at the School Laboratory 2. However, this year it was being repaired due to an unfortunate incident. Therefore, this year the workshop was held at the School Laboratory 1. The workshop began at 2.30 p.m. and ended at 5.30 p.m. A short break was given at 4.00 p.m. During the workshop, the students did many interesting activities. They did experiments and there was also a science quiz. The first prize was won by Nurul Rahmad and the second prize was won by Siva Kumaran. The third prize went to David Ng. 35 Practice 2 The Proboscis Monkey The proboscis monkey is one of the most fascinating creatures in the world. Unlike the orangutan, which can be found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, the proboscis monkey can only be found in Borneo. It has a long, pendulous nose, or proboscis, which hangs down over its mouth and gives the monkey its name. This nose helps to attract mates and to make loud sounds. The proboscis monkey has small, brown eyes. The proboscis monkey spends most of its time in the trees. These monkeys survive mainly on a diet of leaves, seeds and unripe fruits. However, they will occasionally eat insects as well. While the orangutan usually lives alone, the proboscis monkey lives in groups. The group will be led by a male which is easily recognisable by the size of its nose, often much larger than those of the females and their young. Unfortunately, the proboscis monkeys are currently facing threats to their survival due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and human development. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their habitats and ensure the survival of this unique and fascinating species. In conclusion, the proboscis monkey is a remarkable creature with its distinctive features and behaviours. By learning more about these monkeys and supporting conservation efforts, we can help ensure that these monkeys do not go extinct.
