3 Ways to Motivate Children at Home The relationship between parents and children is crucial. At present, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused strain in some families due to stress from various factors. Here are some ways to help rebuild that trust and strengthen the relationship between parents and children. Firstly, when children participate in creating guidelines and schedules, they are more likely to believe the guidelines are important, accept them and follow them. To involve children, parents can set up a family meeting. At the meeting, parents can discuss the schedule and ask children for their input on decisions like what time everyone should be out of bed and dressed, when breaks from schoolwork would work best and where each family member should be during study time. Besides that, parents can present some chores around the house, and children can choose which they prefer. For example, they can also pick when or how they complete them. Apart from that, children will be more open to hearing about what they need to do if they feel that their own perspectives are understood. When things aren’t working out, parents can try engaging in joint problem-solving with their children, which means employing empathy, identifying the issue and fi nding ways to resolve it. When parents provide reasons for why they are asking for something, children can understand the importance of acting in particular ways. Reasons will be most effective when they are meaningful to the children in terms of the children’s own goals. For example, a parent can say that dividing family chores will help everyone have more time for fun activities after dinner. When certain bacteria (0) is added to milk and allowed to ferment, the product is yoghurt. Many people make yoghurt (1) in home. Milk is boiled and then cooled to room temperature. At this point, the starter is added. This is the bacterial culture. The easiest way to get this starter is (2) by store-bought yoghurt. Add two tablespoons of it, mix well and keep it in (3) the container overnight. The next morning, (4) you get lovely set yoghurt. Now, keep it in the fridge. 8 Water Drinking water (either plain or in the form of other fl uids or food) is essential to your health. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fl uids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and maintenance of body temperature. When you are low on fl uids, the brain triggers the body’s thirst mechanism. Water can help control calories. If you choose water or a non-caloric beverage over a caloric beverage and/or eat a diet higher in water-rich foods that are healthier and more fi lling, it will help you trim calorie intake. Water helps energise muscles. Cells that don’t maintain their balance of fl uids result in muscle fatigue. Water helps keep your skin looking good. Dehydration makes your skin look dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration. Water helps your kidneys in cleansing and ridding your body of toxins. Body fl uids transport waste products in and out of cells. When you’re getting enough fl uids, urine fl ows freely, is light in colour and free of odour. Finally, water helps maintain normal bowel function. Adequate hydration keeps things fl owing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation. So, don’t forget to keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk or in your bag and always keep yourself hydrated. 10 April Partridge April lives with her mother Nina and stepfather Nigel, both caterers. April works full-time as a chef assistant at the Ivy in London’s West End while studying for a Professional Chef Scholarship from Westminster Kingsway College. “When I was 14, the only thing I made myself was spaghetti hoops on toast. But at 15, I did two weeks’ work experience at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, making shepherd’s pies.” Positive feedback from the club prompted her school to enter April for the Rotary Young Chef competition, and she was in the top four in the national fi nal. “I made a rhubarb assiette consisting of a mini rhubarb crumble tartlet, a vanilla panna cotta with rhubarb, and poached rhubarb sticks, and a judge said it was ‘Michelin Star standard’. It made all the countless practices worthwhile.” Then, talent-spotting Gary Lee – senior head chef at the Ivy – offered her a Saturday job. Her very fi rst day, she plated up a squash salad, then learned it was for Anthony Hopkins. At 17, she quit school to train as an Ivy chef assistant. “I was quite shy, but now I’m one of the lads,” she says. “I’d probably do this job without pay. It made me confi dent socially, although I don’t have much social life. When I do go to a party, I have a blast, but then I’ll ask Mum: ‘Will you pick me up at 11.30? I’m working with knives tomorrow’ and I have toast and go to bed.” “She’s more methodical, artistic, hardworking and consistent than some boys with 10 years’ experience,” says Gary Lee. “She might be better than me.” While Gary is April’s mentor, Heston Blumenthal is her hero: “The way he takes food to a completely new level takes my breath away.” Apart from junk food, what food wouldn’t April eat? “Nothing – I’d try anything, except horses, cats and dogs. I’ve opened up to offal, squid and other things with faces.” Asked her favourite place to eat out in Chingford, April replies: “My parents make such good food, why would I want to go out to eat? Anyway, at the Ivy, I get breakfast at morning briefi ng, lunch at 11 a.m. and dinner at 4.30.” Source: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2011/apr/17/teens-adolescents-food-eating-cooking Read the text and answer the questions that follow. 12 Read the text below. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fi t each gap (1 – 6). Desserts The word “dessert” emerged in the 17th century. It is derived from the French verb “desservir,” which means “to clear the table” in English. Desserts in history, such as in the Middle Ages, revolved more around fruity sweet foods such as jellies and wafers mixed with exotic fruits, nuts and butter. 1 C The next few reported desserts include apple pies in 1381 and gingerbread in the 1400s. Up until the 17th century, desserts were meshed together with savoury dishes and were used as nothing more than palate cleansers. 2 C The spread in popularity of desserts is owed to the vast sugar plantations in the New World that allowed sugar costs to go down. 3 C The 17th century also saw the move of having desserts solely reserved for the end of meals as opposed to having several small dessert courses as palate cleansers throughout. 4 C Then, the industrial revolution brought forward the mass production of sweet foods such as cakes. Now, you can see that desserts are not just sweet foods that are eaten after a meal but they are a kind of snack if you would like them to be. 5 C We can see the evolution of desserts over the years. They have created ice creams and chocolates as part of desserts. Most importantly, they are enjoyed not just by the young people but also the adults and the elderly. 6 C No wonder people love to eat ice cream after a breakup. Adapted from: https://www.whiskeddc.com/blogs/whisked-blog/history-of-desserts A With reduced sugar prices, sugar could be used abundantly for sweet foods instead of being relegated to a rare fl avouring. B Custards eventually evolved into sweet puddings in the 19th century. C Indeed, the custard is known to be one of the fi rst desserts ever eaten in the Middle Ages. D However, the 17th century saw the advent of dessert cookbooks. E There are cafes open dedicated to only serving desserts. F It is so popular nowadays and even the adults are enjoying it. G Everybody loves desserts. H Desserts also help to release stress and make people happy. Part 5 – Matching Gapped Text PT English Form 3 Text.indd 12 30/01/2024 9:58 AM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. 18 Pollution Pollution is a term which has become so common that almost everyone acknowledges the fact that pollution is rising continuously. The term ‘pollution’ means the emission of harmful materials into the environment. All this is mainly caused by human activities which harm the environment in many ways. Therefore, an urgent need has arisen to tackle this issue straight away. Pollution affects the quality of life more than one can imagine. It works in mysterious ways, sometimes which cannot be seen by the naked eye. However, it is very much present in the environment. For instance, you might not be able to see the natural gases present in the air, but they are there. Air pollution causes the levels of carbon dioxide to rise which is very dangerous for humans. Increased levels of carbon dioxide will lead to global warming. On the other hand, water pollution is mainly due to industrial development which will cause a shortage of drinking water. Moreover, waste that is dumped onto land eventually ends up in the soil and turns toxic. If land pollution keeps on happening at this rate, soon we will be robbed of fertile soil to grow our crops on. After learning about the harmful effects of pollution, one must get on the task of preventing or reducing pollution as soon as possible. To reduce air pollution, people should take public transport or carpool to reduce smoke emission from vehicles. While it may be hard, avoiding fi recrackers during festivals and celebrations can help reduce air and noise pollution. Above all, we must adopt the habit of recycling. This is because a lot of plastic ends up in the oceans and in landfi lls. Each day, for the next nine years, Hachiko awaited Ueno’s return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station. Hachiko attracted the attention of other commuters. Many people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachiko and Professor Ueno together each day. Initial reactions from the people, especially from those working at the station, were not necessarily friendly. In 1932, one of Ueno’s students, Hirokichi Saito (who developed expertise on the Akita breed), saw the dog at the station and followed him to the Kobayashi home (the home of the former gardener of Professor Ueno – Kikuzaboro Kobayashi) where he learned the history of Hachiko’s life. Hirokichi frequently visited Hachiko and over the years, published several articles about the dog’s remarkable loyalty. After reading these articles, people started to bring Hachiko treats and food to nourish him during his wait. Hachiko died on March 8, 1935, when he was eleven years old. He was found on a street in Shibuya. Initially, it was believed that the dog had died after swallowing a yakitori skewer that ruptured his stomach. However, in March 2011, scientists settled the cause of death of Hachiko: the dog had terminal cancer and a worm infection. There were four yakitori skewers inside Hachiko’s stomach but the skewers did not damage his stomach or cause his death. 25 How a Dog Saved a Person’s Life As tough as it sometimes feels, change and loss are woven into life. We cannot live a full life without them. 1 C They can help us become clearer about who we are since they provide a platform for substantial growth. Over the past couple of years, I’ve experienced many changes as I’ve transitioned from one chapter to the next. 2 C My 80-lb. golden retriever buddy came to me at the darkest period of my life. I adopted him when I was suffocating in a deep depression, and he became my earth angel that helped pull me out. He has been by my side through all the failed romantic relationships, horrible bosses, and seemingly wrong turns in life. 3 C After a series of layoffs, bad breakups, and overcoming drug and food addictions, I thought everything would be fi ne. 4 C However, a year ago, a veterinarian found a tumor in his nose attached to his brain. The likelihood of it being cancerous was extremely high. 5 C Through this experience, I’ve learned a lot about what matters in life. We should always cherish the time we have now and be present instead of worrying about the future or wallowing in regrets about the past. Sometimes, a dog could be a better companion than any human could ever be. 6 C As I focus on the present, I am beginning to feel more contented and happier. E Tucker and I had made it through the darkness. F He was the one I had when I was fi red from my job. G The one constant through all of that change has been my right-hand man, my best friend: my dog Tucker. H Tucker has defi nitely taught me to cherish my life more.
