33 Unit 2 Grammar Grammar The Active Voice and the Passive Voice The word ‘voice’ refers to the verb. Is it active or passive? The active voice refers to when the subject is doing the action. 35 Unit 2 Grammar Grammar • When the word ‘by’ is not used Sometimes, the word ‘by’ is not used in the passive voice. e.g. The chocolates are eaten. (by the children) This usually happens when: • the action is more important than the doer • we don’t know who did the action The window is broken. (by Kevin) The test papers are marked. (by Miss Susan) Ask yourself the question, ‘by whom?’ If you can answer it, then it is passive voice. Formative Practice 26 Write A for active voice sentences. For example, look at these sentences: We eat lunch. They buy a car. The lunch is eaten. The car is bought. Which do you think are easier to understand? Definitely, the sentences on the left are easier to understand. They are in the active voice. The passive voice is used more often in formal writing such as reports and research writing. We use quotation marks. For example: He said, ‘I love badminton.’ 2 We report what was said. This is called Indirect Speech or Reported Speech. We do not use quotation marks. For example: He said (that) he loves badminton. 42 General Guidelines • Read the instructions carefully. • Then, skim the text to get a general idea of what it is about. • Read through the questions so that you will know what to look for when reading the text. • Now, read the text carefully. • You might come across difficult words which you may not understand. In such cases, try to understand the context. Read the words before and after it. You may be able to come up with the meaning. • For multiple-choice questions, study the options given carefully. • For free format questions, write your answers neatly and clearly in the space provided. • If a reason or suggestion is required, make sure it is logical. • Check your answers. Make sure they are free from any mistakes in spelling, grammar and punctuation. • Answer the questions that you are able to answer first. Then go back to the ones you had left out earlier. Here is an example of a comprehension passage and how you can answer the questions: Example Read the story below. Then, answer the questions that follow. Sheila and her husband, Tom, go to the beach once a fortnight. Today is one such day. Sheila packs a picnic lunch. She also packs a beach umbrella and a bottle of sunblock. She now looks for the beach towels but can’t find them. She sighs. She’s always losing things. The towels are neither in the laundry basket nor in the dryer. They’re not in the cupboard, either. She finally finds them in her beach bag, neatly folded. That’s exactly where they should be! Sheila puts on her swimsuit and then slips on a loose dress. Grabbing her floppy sun hat, she is almost ready. She just needs her sunglasses. She looks for them. Perhaps they’re on the table by the door or in the bedroom ... or in her purse. Sheila sighs. Tom puts the picnic basket, umbrella and beach bag in the boot of the car. He places his fishing poles and other equipment beside the picnic basket. Daisy, their dog, jumps onto the backseat. She loves the beach too! 43 Unit 3 Reading Reading Now Tom is ready to leave but where is Sheila? She knows he likes to be at the beach before the crowd arrives. He wants to get a good spot to put up the beach umbrella. Tom groans and shakes his head. Sheila is always late! Sheila is still looking for her sunglasses. Unable to find them, she quickly grabs her purse and leaves the house, locking the door after her. She knows Tom hates it when she’s late. “You’re late!” Tom tells her as she gets into the car. She replies, “I’m sorry, dear. I couldn’t find my sunglasses.” Tom looks at her and laughs. He flips down the sun visor so that she could see herself in the mirror. Sheila looks in the mirror and laughs. Her sunglasses are on top of her head. They’ve been there the whole time! “It’s always in the last place you’ll ever look!” says Sheila with a giggle. A Write True or False in the space provided. 1 Sheila and her husband go to the beach once in every two weeks. True 2 Sheila is on time when she hurries to the car. False 3 The beach they are going to is rather popular. True B Tick the correct box. Tom likes to arrive at the beach early to get a good spot. The most suitable proverb to describe Tom is . make hay while the sun shines. the early bird catches the worm. ✓ one man’s meat is another man’s poison. C Write out your answers. 1 How would you describe Sheila? (i) She is forgetful. / She always loses things. (ii) She is always late. 2 What do you think Tom does at the beach besides swimming and having a picnic with Sheila? HOTS Evaluating Give a reason to support your answer. Tom also does some fishing at the beach. It is stated in paragraph 4 that he brings along his ‘fishing poles and other equipment’. 3 How does Sheila protect herself from the sun? She takes along a bottle of sunblock and a floppy hat. HOTS Evaluating The sentence Sheila is always late in para 5 tells you she is already late. The words before the crowd arrives in para 5 is the clue. Here, the proverb means that if you arrive early, you get what you want. The proof is in para 4 fishing poles and equipment. These answers are from para 2 and para 5. This is a general knowledge question. Explanation The word fortnight in the first sentence is the clue. A fortnight is 2 weeks. 44 Unit 3 Reading Reading Formative Practice 1 Read the story below. Then, answer the questions that follow. I remember how I used to play outside with my friends during my childhood. We always had a great time. We played a lot of games where we had to use our imagination. Playing those games, we learned how to compete, organise ourselves into groups and be creative. We made up a bunch of games that did not require any specific toys. Today, the situation is different. Children are not allowed to play freely outdoors. Pollution and unsafe situations are some of the reasons why children are not let out outdoors. The results of this is harmful for children’s development. Children are not exercising to keep themselves fit. They are unable to develop socially by mixing around with other kids. They are not being raised in a natural environment. They don’t have enough safe places where they can play with their friends, go cycling or even go for an ice cream. Children are still playing, but instead of playing outdoors, they are playing indoors with high-tech toys. This means they are staying inside the house usually in front of a television or a computer. They are becoming lonelier, making fewer friends and are not enjoying their lives as much as we did when we were young. A Circle the correct answer. 1 The writer had played many games with his friends. A indoor B outdoor C high-tech 2 The writer and his friends became in inventing new games.
