Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D to fill in each blank. Climate Change There are still some people who say that climate change (0) is not real! Others say that it is real, but we cannot do (9) to stop it, so we need not try. A few people even say that climate change is not caused (10) human beings. But most people now understand that our world is getting hotter, and we have to do something about it. We only (11) one Earth, and we definitely cannot get another one. Twenty years ago, people could perhaps imagine that climate change was not a real problem, because some scientists still had serious doubts. Today, almost all the world’s prominent scientists (12) : the world is getting hotter, and it is the fault of human beings. Our planet is going towards a climate catastrophe, but we can stop (13) worst effects. Indeed, we must do everything possible to stop them. Before the year 2100, all the energy that we use may perhaps come from (14) resources. They are the sun, the sea, the wind, (15) rivers which can produce more than enough energy for everyone on our planet. But we still have a long way to go. The green energy revolution has already (16) , but the challenges are still enormous. ‘Going green’ will cost (17) enormous amount of money, and use newfound technology that is yet to exist. Some people believe that we cannot afford to fight climate change (18) it will cost too much. 1119/1 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) 6 SULIT SULIT 1119/1 Part 3 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. Tony Fernandes is synonymous with AirAsia. At the age of 36, he quit as vice-president of Warner Music Group in South East Asia and purchased, with three partners, the ailing Malaysian airline, AirAsia. As the CEO, he has used a combination of low costs, low fares and an open and informal management style to turn it into Asia’s biggest low-cost carrier. Tony is candid, friendly and outspoken. When he came up with the idea of purchasing the airline, he told his wife, “I really believe in this.” He felt there was a huge untapped market in Asia—millions of people wanted to fly but could not afford it. Here is Tony’s account of his recipe for success. “Many friends cautioned me! They told me I would fail. I simply told them this—if I fail, I fail. At least, when I am 60 years old, I won’t be sitting and saying — I should have tried.” Tony spends a lot of time speaking at schools, encouraging kids to pursue their own dreams. “I tell them it can be done. Look at me, there’s nothing special about me. You’ve just got to believe in yourself. You don’t have to be connected to a politician. You don’t have to have money. You just need to believe that you can go out there and do it.” “Don’t be afraid of failing because then you’ll never start and if you fail, try again,” he advises. At Warner, Tony had spent a fortune on Malaysian singer Zainal Abidin’s second album which flopped. “That didn’t stop me from pushing on with my work, my dreams.” He is always delighted when he receives a lot of letters from people saying that he has inspired them, that they are going to try something different. “That really spurs me on.” “Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. If you don’t make mistakes, you’ll never learn. But when you do mess up, be the first to admit it. Don’t try to cover yourself. Once in a while, I do this too. For example, when I insisted AirAsia fly from Kuala Lumpur to Penang four times a day, even though Malaysian Airlines flew the same route 12 times a day.” He realised he couldn’t compete against the buses. “The buses pick you up and drop you off right in the middle of each city. They get people to Penang faster. With airlines, one has to go to the airport and then back from the airport to the city. I just said, ‘Sorry guys. I messed up. It’s my fault, I was wrong.’ I even said sorry to my pilots when a merit system for awarding bonuses to pilots backfired. The pilots were unhappy and made no secret of it. They really appreciated my apologies.” “As a manager, you have to be accessible. I talk to everyone: my staff, our passengers, and the media. If you just sit in your office, you don’t know what is going on. Every day in the office, I set aside two hours to spend with the staff. I walk around, go to the baggage handling area, see what’s going on, joke around. Accessibility helps you earn the confidence of people around you. It makes them feel like they can talk openly and without fear. They should have the freedom to say, ‘This is wrong.’ Being accessible means being open. At the end of the day, human relationships are about openness, trust and transparency.” “Also, look beyond the money when you pursue something. It’s nice to have money. I like the fine things money can buy. But I am not doing this for money. I was paid a fortune at Warner but I left. The big kick for me is using money to help others. There are a lot of smart people who never got the chance to go to school, so I sponsor cadet pilots. No one has ever become poor from giving.” (Adapted from Reader’s Digest) Koleksi KM SPM BI (KM1)4th.indd 6 13/5/2024 5:11:57 PM

1119/1 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) 8 SULIT SULIT 1119/1 Part 4 Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about an athlete who made a comeback after being paralysed. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences that you do not need to use. Write your answers in the box provided. A COMEBACK It would almost be incorrect to say that Darryl Tait has made a comeback in the four and a half years since his accident. A comeback implies that he disappeared for a while, but for Tait, there was never any question of leaving extreme sports behind. He started pushing his limits again while he was still in a rehab centre in the weeks and months after the crash. 27 After his surgery in Boston, Tait, a Canadian from the Yukon Territory, was flown to a second hospital in Vancouver, and from there, he moved to a rehabilitation facility where he spent six months building up his strength and relearning how to live in his body, how to take care of himself, and how to manage the most basic daily tasks. 28 He had physical therapy sessions, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy. He learned wheelchair skills and played wheelchair sports. 29 It was like going to school, he says, only every day of the classes was focused on some aspect of living with paralysis. He was so focused on his recovery, he recalls, that he didn’t stop to think too hard about his diagnosis. “None of the emotions really kicked in until I got home.” That changed when he came back to Whitehorse. He did his best to stay positive around friends and family, but it was at night, when he was alone in bed, his lower half inert, that the ‘dark times’ kicked in. He’d be lying in bed, just mad and frustrated, thinking, “Oh man, why did I pull that day? I shouldn’t have pulled it!” 30 31 In early 2010, while he was still in rehab, the X Games introduced Adaptive Snocross for the first time, a racing event for disabled snowmobilers. Tait skipped out of the facility to fly to Aspen and meet its first competitors, his new role models. He immediately embraced the nascent sport of WCMX like a combination of skateboarding and BMX, but in a wheelchair. When he eventually got home to Whitehorse, he started working on the modifications that would be needed to let him ride his snowmobile again. 32 A However, two new sports soon occupied his time. B By 2013, he was back at the X Games, this time as a competitor. C He met with dieticians and a psychiatrist. D He was still learning to live with his chair and to manage his newly paralysed body. E He learned how to dress himself. F His parents had always supported his involvement in extreme sports. G He remembers nights spent slamming his head into his pillow over and over again, haunted by whys and what-ifs. H Somewhere along the way, he had become liberated from all the painful thoughts. But why do people collect matchboxes? Well, one reason is because of the artwork. Some matchboxes have unique artwork and detailing which capture the interest of collectors. Another reason is they commemorate historical events. You may sometimes see the milestones of a country by looking at the matchboxes. Finally, some matchboxes have value. For example, older matchboxes that are no longer produced become rare items that fetch a good sum. The hobby was especially popular from 1960s to 1980s, however it has become somewhat less popular now. This could be due to environmental awareness, poor quality of print and the changing times. Part 1 Questions 1 to 8 are based on the given stimuli. Study the information carefully and choose the best answer A, B, or C. 3 Which of the following is true? A Phillumenists refer to the hobby of matchbox collecting. B People collect matchboxes to preserve the environment. C Some matchboxes contain artwork that portrays important events. 1119/1 Koleksi Kertas Model SPM: Bahasa Inggeris (CEFR) 126 SULIT SULIT 1119/1 Part 3 Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage. Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. Neighbours come by chance and if they are wonderful, it is a blessing to us. That was what I thought because I met a lot of interesting people when I rented out a unit next to my apartment. Four years ago, a young couple came to reside there. They were introduced by my agent and I negotiated the rent price with the wife. One evening, while I was playing the guitar and trying to write a song, there was a knock on my door. To my surprise, it was Mathew James, my new neighbour, and he had a bicycle light in his hand. He said he knew I often cycled at night but my bike had no light. It was dangerous, he said. We became quite friendly after that. He lived next door for several years. Then, one afternoon, I received a disturbing call from my office. An FBI agent wanted to speak to me about my tenant. I thought it could wait because I was about to go to a concert. But the officer sounded serious about the matter. At the office, I was shoved a poster of a WANTED man. Immediately, I could recognise the familiar face though the name was different. Was this the man who bought me a bike light because he was worried I was cycling at night? The next thing the FBI wanted was my help to apprehend the criminal. For a few minutes, I was taken aback because I was unsure of what I was involved in. It was not as simple as I thought. The first thing I had to do was give them the spare keys. However, that was not all. I was supposed to go and knock on the door to see whether he was there. But they changed their plan. An agent placed himself at the window which had a good view of James’s balcony from across the street. Another had to go to my apartment. So, I told him to go through an alley on the side so he did not have to walk in front of the building. As for me, I had to walk in front in order not to arouse any suspicion. After I got in, I drew a floor plan of James’s unit. The officer was throwing ideas around trying to find a way to trap the notorious criminal. As we shared the main wall, we decided to break into his storage locker. While the plan was being laid out, I Googled the man whom I thought was my nice ordinary neighbour. What I read made my blood run cold. Perhaps he would hurt me or probably be ready with a gun if he had to. The initial shock at discovering his secret had made me forget my relationship with Mathew. This was a man who had never been anything but nice to me. In fact, every year he would not forget to buy me a Christmas present. Second thoughts encroached on me and I started to waver and was apprehensive of rendering help to the FBI. In the end, I reluctantly made the call but was a bit relieved when there was no answer. The officers insisted that I go over and knock on the door. Fortunately, his wife returned the call. “Claire, the storage has been broken into. Ask Mathew to meet me or I have to call the police.” From the window, I could see Claire’s worried look. Mathew agreed to come down. When I went to the streets, there were police cars and half a dozen FBI agents. Mathew Gasko was taken and handcuffed. Unfortunately, Claire was also arrested for being his accomplice. Claire walked past me and said, “Hi, Josh!” I was silent. After the incident, my family was worried about my safety while some of my friends jokingly betted how long I would live. Then, two months after he was caught, I received a letter from Mathew. He released me from my guilt and fears. He wrote, “No worries, buddy! They would have got me somehow even without your help!” New neighbours took up the place and they seemed like nice people too. But who knows? We cannot judge a book by its cover! I was about fourteen. 27 My grandparents forbade me to go out to sea that day as they had heard that a storm would be coming. I ignored their warning. When my grandparents were busy, I quietly snuck out of the house and went to my grandfather’s boat. I did not believe the storm would be coming soon. 28 I boarded the boat and rowed to the middle of the sea. I then took out my fishing rod and began to fish. As I was fishing, a strong wind began to blow and suddenly the sky turned dark. I quickly put away my fishing rod and began to row back to shore. 29 I just could not control the boat. After what seemed like hours of floating aimlessly at sea, I landed on a remote island. Just as I landed on the island, it began to rain heavily. There was no shelter to be found on the remote island. I was soon soaking wet. 30 After a few hours, the rain finally stopped. I felt cold and hungry. I walked around the island and soon found some fruit. They were sweet and juicy. When nighttime came, I went back to the coconut tree from earlier on and slept underneath it. I had a very uncomfortable night. 31 As to be expected, I woke up the next morning feeling exhausted. I again ate the fruits that I had found for breakfast. After breakfast, I decided to go back to my grandfather’s boat and somehow row back home even though I had no idea where I was. 32 I felt so relieved. I jumped and yelled as loud as I could to get their attention. Luckily, one of the rescue boat crew saw me. They quickly came and took me home. When I saw my grandparents, I hugged and apologised to them for causing them to worry. They forgave me but made me promise I would never do something so reckless again. I promised I would listen to their warnings next time. A I just sat under a coconut tree which offered me very little protection. B I saw a man at the beach. C I then decided to take my grandfather’s boat out to sea to catch some fish. D It felt as if I was being eaten alive by the mosquitoes. E I shivered and felt very tired. F The sky was very clear and the sun was shining brightly. G At the beach, I saw a rescue boat passing by. H Unfortunately, the wind was just too strong.
