All that made me happy was tending to the plants at the back of my house; watering, talking and singing to them. Staying indoors made me feel angry. When the rain had cleared, I quickly got ready to go outside. I gathered all my tools and headed straight to the garden. However, to my dismay, my garden was damaged and in a mess. 3 When did the old man find out his garden was damaged? A While staying indoors. B After the rain had stopped. C When he got ready to go outside. Listening Script: Question 4 You hear a woman talking about computers. Computers cannot think nor do things on their own. Humans have to feed them with information and tell them what to do. The first computers were huge and costly. They filled up almost the whole floor of large offices. Scientists soon found ways to produce cheaper and smaller computers. In Japan and in some places in America, robots are used in factories to assemble cars. As computers become more common in businesses and factories, people fear that one day, computers and computer-controlled robots will put human workers out of work. We left the school at 9 in the morning and reached the home an hour later. When we arrived at the home, the children rushed out to greet us with open arms. There were 50 children altogether and they were not afraid to meet us. The children were aged between five and 13 years old. Our club members went forward to say hello and exchanged pleasantries. Then, we were taken on a short tour around the home. The surroundings of the home have lots of trees around. There was a continuous breeze that made the environment cool and peaceful. 177 UNIT 5 After the tour, we were taken to the main hall. We mingled with the children and they shared some funny stories with us. Some of them even brought their arts and handicraft pieces to show us. From our observation, each of them had a talent. Some could sing, many were able to paint while the others were able to draw and weave. The caretakers were kind to them and these children are encouraged to take up hobbies through which they could display their talents. As such, there were many beautiful paintings, drawings and handicraft pieces displayed on the walls too. Soon, it was time for lunch. We ate a delicious meal with the children. It was a healthy meal consisting of rice, mixed vegetables and baked fish. The meal was specially prepared by the cooks at the home. After lunch, we distributed some gifts that we had brought along. The children were excited to receive them. We also gave some donations from the fundraising we had had in school which consisted of clothes and tinned food. We had a photography session with them and the children had become friendly. We signed their autographs and soon it was time to leave. The children were sad to see us go but we promised to visit them again soon. 1 Who visited the underprivileged children? Sarah : I went to Scotland. It is in the north part of the United Kingdom. Jimmy : Wow, that's great! I've never been to the UK. Who did you go with? Sarah : I went there with my husband last month. We wanted to relax, and also go shopping. Jimmy : Sounds good! How long did you stay? Sarah : We stayed there for almost six days. We booked a hotel online in advance. Jimmy : Isn't it expensive there? I've heard it's really expensive in the UK. Sarah : It depends on which city you go to. In the north part of the UK, it's not that expensive compared to London, for example. London is an expensive city. But I think that if you choose Airbnb, it's not that pricey. It's around 50 or 60 pounds per night. Airbnb is way cheaper than a hotel, however we stayed at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow. Jimmy : Who makes travel decisions in your family? Sarah : Sometimes it's me, sometimes it's my husband who makes travel decisions. Actually, my friends suggested going to the UK and we decided to join them. Jimmy : Was that your first time in the UK? Sarah : Well, we go to the UK twice a year. RS SPM English-Unit 5.indd 186 25/03/2024 10:06 AM

UNIT 5 Jimmy : Twice a year? Wow, that's quite often, actually. And why do you prefer going to the UK that often? Sarah : I like going there because of the cool weather and the beautiful countryside. Jimmy : I see. Have you visited China? Sarah : Yes, I have. I think there are really beautiful places in China. For instance, Xinjiang and Xizang provinces are more beautiful than foreign countries. Jimmy : Are these places far from Shanghai? Sarah : Yes, they are far from Shanghai. Jimmy : Actually, Japan is closer to Shanghai. Sarah : Yes, it is. Jimmy : Have you been to South Korea? Sarah : Yes, I went there in October last year. Jimmy : Which city did you visit? Sarah : We went to Seoul, but I think it’s not very tourist-friendly. Personally, I prefer going to Japan. Jimmy : If you compare Japanese and Korean cuisine, which one do you like more? Sarah : Japanese food, of course. Jimmy : Really? I’ve actually heard that a lot of people prefer Korean food. Sarah : Korean food is spicy to me. I think Japanese food is more delicious. Jimmy : What countries would you like to visit in the future? Sarah : I want to go to Italy next year. I’m not planning to go anywhere else this year. I would also like to visit Spain and the USA. Jimmy : What do you need to prepare before you travel to another country? Sarah : It depends where you’re going to. If I choose Europe or the USA, I usually take some Chinese food with me. I don’t like Western food. I’m Chinese, and I like rice and noodles. I went to the USA in 2016 and I didn’t like their food. Even though there are Chinese restaurants in Europe and the USA, the food there is very expensive. Jimmy : So you went to the USA last year? Which cities did you visit? Sarah : I went to San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. To be honest, I like Europe more. In fact, two of my aunties live in Europe. My elder aunt has settled down in Germany while my younger aunt lives in Holland. They visit us once a year and I plan to visit my second aunt in Holland when I go to Europe next. Firstly, the food is expensive and not nutritious. Besides that, the number of flies invading the canteen has increased over the months. One can see swarms of flies buzzing around the canteen. The canteen workers are not neatly dressed and they serve food, especially local cakes, with their bare hands without using tongs or spoons. We hope the situation will be improvised. Evelyn 3.3 Guided Writing Descriptive Essays SPM Practices Practice 1 Model Answer During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, my parents made use of their free time to grow vegetables on the piece of land behind our house. First, my father and I cleared the bushes. Next, my father bought some vegetable seeds such as long beans, chilli, spinach, ladies’ fingers, brinjals and maize. We planted them and within three weeks, the shoots were showing up. My parents felt happy and I too was excited to see the young leaves sprouting. I helped my father to water the plants daily while my mother pulled out the weeds. My father built a fence around the farm to keep away the goats from the neighbourhood. After about two months, the vegetables were ready to be harvested. We gave some to our neighbours, who were grateful to us. My parents felt happy that we had fresh vegetables to eat from our own farm. Practice 2 Model Answer During the last holidays, I visited my grandparents in the village. There was a heavy downpour for the next two days and the village was inundated by flood. My grandparents panicked; however, I took them upstairs and told them to stay there. Meanwhile, with the help of several neighbours, I salvaged the electrical appliances and furniture by placing them on the tables and on the upper floor. Later, some rescuers came by and brought my grandparents and me to the community hall. The rescuers were kind and they gave us some food and drinks during our stay there. After two days, the flood subsided. I returned to my grandparents’ house first to clean the mess caused by the muddy waters, with the help of the villagers. My grandparents were thankful and praised me for being a great help to them. Practice 3 Model Answer Chinese New Year was just around the corner. As usual, my mother wanted to take me to shop for some new clothes. She took me to New MegaStore which has several clothes shops. My mother told me to choose clothes that were of my choice. I chose a pair of jeans, a cheongsam and two dresses. The jeans were dark blue and the cheongsam was maroon in colour. However, the dresses were respectively light green and light yellow. I chose these clothes because I felt comfortable wearing them. My mum said that I looked elegant in the dresses, so I chose them. Then, we went to Central Shoe store. I chose a pair of black shoes that would match both my dresses and cheongsam. I felt very happy and we returned home in the evening. RS SPM English-Answers.indd 267 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

ANSWERS Thank you for your kind understanding in this matter. Yours faithfully, Nadia (NADIA BINTI ARIFFIN) Argumentative Essays SPM Practices Practice 1 Model Answer Mothers play a significant role in every household. They are known to be the love of their families. The most important task of mothers is to take care of their children who need their love, care and attention physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. Furthermore, they have to provide the best meals for their children and take care of the household. On the other hand, working mothers are too busy and they do not have time to relax. This is bad for their health as well as for their children. Furthermore, as mothers become busy with their career, children tend to be naughty due to less supervision from mothers. This may create chaos in the family. In short, it is possible to maintain a happy and healthy family when mothers plan their budget to live within their means by cutting their coat according to their cloth. Practice 2 Model Answer Almost every household in the world has a television set, and children are exposed to this media from a very young age. However, it has positive and negative effects on children. Some children are addicted to television. As a result, they neglect their studies. Homework and revision are not done and this leads to them being left behind in their lessons. Furthermore, watching television often spoils one’s eyesight. Due to this, many students wear spectacles from a very young age. Nevertheless, some programmes with subtitles help students to improve their proficiency level in a particular language. Besides that, the documentary or scientific films are informative, as such, they help to widen students’ knowledge in various fields. In my opinion, any type of technology has its bad and good effects. The onus is on the users to use it wisely. Practice 3 Model Answer The problems caused by smoking are a mass phenomenon around the world. There is a high level of deaths among smokers due to various diseases caused by this dangerous habit. It is undeniable that besides the smokers, children and others who breathe in the tobacco smoke let out by active smokers become the passive smokers. Hence, non-smokers’ lives are also at risk. However, a ban on cigarettes or smoking will cause an increase in the black market activity. Cigarettes will be sold illegally, so such bans on smoking will result in criminal organisations making profit from selling tobacco illegally. Furthermore, it will reduce the government’s income from the production and sale of cigarettes. To conclude, a better measure would be to increase the awareness of people about the negative effects of smoking on their health and lives. Recounts SPM Practices Practice 1 Model Answer My father drove us to Penang last December. I went along to spend my holidays with my cousins there. We left at about 9 o’clock in the morning. All the way, it was raining cats and dogs. My sisters and I were reading. Suddenly, an express bus overtook us and knocked the front of our car. My father was not able to control the car, so it skidded to the side and plunged into a monsoon drain. There were screams and my sisters and I cried. Fortunately, the bus driver and several passengers came to help though it was raining heavily. Someone had called the ambulance and we were taken to the Tanjung Malim District Hospital. At the hospital, I felt relieved and thanked God that the accident was not a more serious one. I was also happy that our injuries were some minor cuts and bruises. Practice 2 Model Answer I was walking along the corridor during recess when I heard a commotion in the library. I quickly ran to see what was happening. Two boys who were standing in the queue were shouting at each other. The other students who were in the library gathered nearby to watch the fight. I tried to stop them from fighting but to no avail. The librarian ran to call the discipline teacher. All of a sudden, the two boys started punching each other. The girls became afraid and started screaming. 270 ANSWERS The discipline teacher came in and stopped the boys from fighting. He warned them never to fight in school again. One of the boys borrowed a book and left the library. The other boy was hurt. I helped him to the discipline teacher’s car and accompanied them to the clinic nearby. After getting medical treatment, the three of us returned to school. What an experience! Practice 3 Model Answer Last weekend, I visited a museum called the Galeria Perdana in Kedah. I visited the museum to see our former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir’s gifts and awards. Firstly, I went to the ground floor in Block A where Tun Dr Mahathir’s gifts made of wood, leather and crystals as well as musical instruments and stone objects of various forms were placed. They were beautiful and unique in their patterns and shapes. Next, textiles, ceramics and Islamic art were displayed on the first floor in this block. In Block B, I saw his awards made from pewter and honorary awards received by him. In addition, there were special awards received by his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah. I felt proud of Tun Dr Mahathir and happy that all his gifts and awards were being displayed to be viewed by the people. Letters to the Editor SPM Practices Practice 1 Model Answer Dear Sir/Madam, On behalf of the authorities of SMK Pandan Murni, I would like to bring to your attention the illegal parking by parents of the primary school next door. In order to pave the way for their children to walk safely into their school compound, they park illegally on the main road which leads to our school. This blocks the road for our teachers who drive into our school compound to park their cars. Besides, in trying to park their cars in a hurry to walk their children to their school, these parents might knock down our students who are walking into our compound. There is a large parking area nearby where car owners are charged for parking. Therefore, I suggest the traffic police department be sent to take charge of this chaotic situation by doing the necessary. Looking forward to your kind attention and co-operation in this matter. Practice 2 Model Answer Dear Sir/Madam, I would be much obliged if you could publish this in the appropriate media to catch the authority’s attention. I live in a bungalow next to the market in Jalan Sinar. Rubbish from the market is dumped daily in the back lane of my house making the area filthy. Flies have gathered on the heaps of rotting vegetables and other rubbish. Flies spread diseases. This problem would not arise if the hawkers at the market collected their daily rubbish in plastic bags to be thrown in proper bins. Besides, the city council should place proper bins for the hawkers to throw their rubbish. Most importantly, the rubbish trucks should come regularly to collect the garbage. Therefore, I appeal to the authorities to take the necessary steps to look into our plight. Practice 3 Model Answer Dear Sir/Madam, On behalf of the residents of Gamma Condominium, I would like to highlight some problems faced by the residents living there. Firstly, the street lights have not been lit for the past three months. As there is a mountain behind this condominium, snakes and monitor lizards are regulars here. We are afraid to walk to the car park at night which is pitch dark. Furthermore, as the security guards are always missing, outsiders drive in and park their cars at our parking lots. Thus, we are deprived of the provided parking facility, even though we pay the car park rental fee every month. Besides, the lifts get jammed often, creating fear in the residents to use them. As this condominium consists of twelve storeys, it is indeed hazardous and inconvenient for us to use the staircase. I look forward to the quick attention and response by the authorities in taking the necessary steps to ease our situation. RS SPM English-Answers.indd 270 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

ANSWERS 3.4 Extended Writing Articles SPM Practices Practice 1 Model Answer Nurturing Well-Rounded Students through Co-curriculum Co-curriculum programmes are aimed at developing students beyond the formal classroom. The selection of activities commonly includes sports, uniform bodies as well as clubs and societies. These activities are meant to enhance children’s school experience and help them gain valuable skills and knowledge. Through these activities, students develop good habits such as being on time for practice, wearing the appropriate uniform, organising equipment and being reliable and trustworthy. Teachers’ involvement and the environment help students develop into well-rounded individuals as it facilitates interactions outside the classroom through mutual respect for each other as they work together. Life skills such as culinary skills and first aid provide long-term benefits as students learn how to fend for themselves. Furthermore, these activities may become their hobbies. They also offer enjoyment, socialisation and team skills that are fostered through sports and group events. The facilities available in schools that offer students in-depth learning experience make cocurriculum programmes interesting to students. These include theatre, music departments, multiple sports, swimming pools and others. Besides that, qualified teachers who are experienced at certain activities are also an important factor. There must also be proper funding and resources for these activities. This will enable all the activities to be carried out successfully. Finally, co-curriculum programmes that are taught by experienced staff and given generous time allocations can greatly impact students’ development and ambitions. It also allows them to enjoy school as well as enhance their self-esteem. Practice 2 Model Answer How to Prepare for a Landslide Emergency Landslides cause a lot of damage to properties and injuries to people. Therefore, the community needs to know how to react before, during and after a landslide. Our surroundings must be monitored for early signs of landslides. Signs such as cracks on the walls, drains and floors are some of the early signs. As soon as such signs appear, design an evacuation plan for your family. Get prepared with an emergency bag where you can keep some clothes and most importantly, all your cash and important documents. They are identity cards, bank documents and papers concerning your house in a bag. As soon as you experience some movement of the ground, immediately alert your family and neighbours by shouting out to them. Quickly evacuate your house with your family and the emergency bag. Curl yourselves and get under any tables to protect your heads, if escape is impossible. At the end of a landslide, check for physical injuries and inform the rescuers for immediate treatment. You must stay away from the landslide area until further notice from the authorities concerned. This is because there may be additional slides and only the authorities concerned will have knowledge on this. In conclusion, please report to the local authority if there are early warning signs of landslides as mentioned above. This will enable them to inspect the site and take appropriate measures if necessary. Practice 3 Model Answer Stress among Teenagers Stress not only affects adults in the working world but also teenagers in school. There are a number of reasons why stress among teenagers is on the rise. First of all, teenagers today engage in too many activities. An average teenager today attends school, extra-curricular activities and tuition classes, besides having to do homework and class projects as well as study. Aside from that, parents too sometimes contribute to teenage stress. They have very high expectations of their children, not only academically but also in sports and other activities which could be a burden to them. In addition, most teenagers nowadays lead a sedentary lifestyle. They prefer to stay indoors and play computer games or surf the net. This is a pity as exercise is a great way to relieve stress and promotes a healthy body and mind. Finally, teenagers today face strong peer pressure. They are expected to conform to a particular lifestyle that is considered trendy. There are many ways teenagers can reduce stress. Firstly, they can prioritise their activities according to its importance. Then, make a timetable so that they are able to plan their day, work and month. If the activity is not very important or they simply do not have the time for RS SPM English-Answers.indd 271 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

ANSWERS it, they can eliminate it from their list. They should also allocate time for recreation and relaxation. Parents can help their teenage children by realising their capabilities and not make unrealistic expectations and demands. Parents’ love, attention and encouragement are crucial in a teenager’s life. Practice 4 Model Answer Top Four Ideas for the School Holidays The school holidays are approaching and I have four ideas on how children could spend their school holidays meaningfully. Children these days spend their holidays glued to their gadgets such as smartphones, tablets and personal computers. They do not meet their friends outdoors, instead they have cyber chats to communicate with their friends. Therefore, as the holidays are approaching, parents can look out for local cookery classes that offer cooking and baking programmes. They can learn the basic skills of cutting, chopping and dicing vegetables and other foodstuff. Apart from this, children can be taught to make kites and how to fly them. This activity will bring them outdoors and enable them to enjoy the fresh air and breeze. Parents can also plan an outdoor scavenger hunt. It is a simple but exciting game. Children would have a fun learning experience when they are required to return with most of the items listed within the stipulated time. They can also be brought camping. As there are several beautiful and refreshing spots in Malaysia, youngsters will enjoy this activity immensely. It is important for youngsters to do something meaningful or be out amongst nature as they will enjoy the goodness it has to offer. They also get to engage in more social interactions. Besides, activities such as these also lead to a decrease in anxiety, depression and hyperactivity among children. Practice 5 Model Answer Instil Love for Reading Children must be encouraged to love books and be let known that books are their best friends. In this era where technology prevails, it is important for parents to instil the love for reading in children. Reading is important to children as it exposes them to a wide range of vocabulary. This helps them to understand the text and improve their comprehension skills. As reading becomes a habit, children’s understanding of the world is widened. Besides, through reading, children learn how to effectively use their knowledge and ideas. Children who read regularly are usually fluent in speaking the particular language on any topic. However, many children do not like reading as they find it boring. In recent times, children are hooked on electronic gadgets such as tablets and mobile phones as these provide interactive entertainment. Furthermore, some children feel anxious or have difficulties in reading. This may be because they could be exposed to reading materials that may not be their cup of tea. Nevertheless, children must be encouraged to read. Materials that are reading-related such as spelling games or board games that require some level of reading can be starters to encourage reading. Besides that, children’s hobbies and interests can be used to find materials for them that are related to their hobbies. Besides, parents can discuss the reading progress of children to check if they have any learning disability. Most importantly, children should be shown continuous support and encouragement for their progress. Practice 6 Model Answer Educational Value Derived from Growing Plants The educational value behind growing plants is gratifying. Perhaps, this is why the Environmental Club is formed as a co-curricular activity in schools. Firstly, when students are actively involved and engaged in growing plants or gardening, it teaches them important life skills and values such as responsibility and resourcefulness. This happens as they are tasked with ensuring the healthy growth of their own plants by taking care of them daily or weekly. Besides, teachers could build trust and good communication with their students while enhancing their creativity and confidence. Furthermore, students learn how to appreciate what they have after investing their own time and energy into producing something. Apart from that, they learn the concept of social responsibility, that is, the difference they make in contributing to the betterment of the society and environment, although it is as small and simple as growing plants. Moreover, they learn the difference between “organic” fruits and vegetables that they plant and those bought from supermarkets. They come to know of commercially-produced vegetables that contain harmful pesticides. This helps to broaden their knowledge on the details of food that may cause harm to their health. Students should be encouraged to grow their own fruits and vegetables at home. It is because RS SPM English-Answers.indd 272 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

ANSWERS besides enabling them to get some outdoor exercise, it results in them being knowledgeable about food that can be beneficial to their health. Reports SPM Practices Practice 1 Model Answer Saving the Environment for Healthy Living Introduction: As the problems of pollution escalate, the upcoming housing projects do not seem to emphasise on the wellness of the surroundings. The aim of the report is to suggest ways to save the environment. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: On the subject of saving the environment, first and foremost, we have to respect lives and nature. Without respect for nature, there will be no desire to protect them. We have to practise the 3 ‘Rs’, that is, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. This means we have to reduce by not creating wastage or minimising the waste. Then, reuse whatever that need not be abandoned and recycle by sending the waste to be processed as a new resource. Campaigns and Reading Materials: Furthermore, family members, friends, classmates or colleagues could be educated on saving the environment through campaigns and by exposing them to reading materials on local and global environmental issues. Eco-friendly Appliances: We can equip our homes with eco-friendly electrical appliances. For example, we can plant more trees around our house to cool down the temperature instead of using air-conditioners. Energy is saved and the temperature of the environment can be reduced. Recommendation: To conclude, in view of saving the environment, more awareness has to be created among the people because Mother Earth is large and each one of us is responsible for preserving nature. Reported by Stanley (STANLEY GOMEZ) Practice 2 Model Answer Visit by Japanese Students Introduction: This report which is based on a survey with 40 students is aimed to make suggestions on the various activities that are to be carried out with the Japanese students and their teachers. They will be here under the student exchange programme for three hours from 10.00 a.m. till 1.00 p.m. Arrival of Japanese Students: Firstly, the entourage will be welcomed by the headmistress at the school hall by addressing them with a welcome speech. Next, they will be entertained with cultural dances by students of the three main ethnic groups. At the end of the cultural performances, the Japanese students will be led to the dining area at the hall to have some light refreshments. They will be served with Malay, Chinese and Indian local cakes with tea and coffee. Exhibitions and Tour of School: They will then be taken to the classrooms to see some exhibitions on teaching materials used in Malaysian schools, folios and products of handson projects by our students. Following that, the Japanese students will be taken on a tour around the school while the teachers will have a meeting with the administrators of our school. Conclusion: Lastly, before their departure, our headmistress will give away plaques as souvenirs to the students and their teachers. As their departure time will be about 1.00 p.m., they will gather at the assembly ground. The students from our school too will assemble there to sing our national anthem before they are sent off. Generally, they are positive about the online classes. Enthusiastic about Online Classes: Most of them are in favour of these classes as they like to be at home and study online using their laptops or mobile phones. Firstly, it is because RS SPM English-Answers.indd 273 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

ANSWERS they enjoy using their gadgets to study. They are enthusiastic about surfing the Internet to do the necessary research for information in completing their hands-on projects. Besides, meanings of words are found out online through online dictionaries and they find this fun and interesting. They have also learnt how to download and upload their completed tasks online for the teachers to check and return their work. Study in Comfort: Furthermore, most of them say that they do not have to wake up very early as they do not need to go to school. They can be at home and have their food and drink as they wish. In this way, they do not go hungry. Most of all, their parents do not have to spare them pocket money. Recommendation: In conclusion, online classes should be carried on even when the COVID-19 pandemic ends because online learning appears interesting to the students. They become independent learners and much to the surprise of the teachers, they seem to progress in all the subjects. They tend to venture out and discover more by themselves as they surf to do research and collect information. Reported by, Shantini (SHANTINI GOPALAN) Practice 4 Model Answer Unfavourable Online Shopping Introduction: This report is based on a survey made with about 500 people and is aimed to fund out people’s preference for online shopping. Eighty percent of them do not like online shopping. This is due to the various reasons that concern the products, payment method and the feeling of insecurity it creates. Products: Firstly, they are not able to touch the things to check before purchasing them. Besides, the colours of the products, especially clothes, differ in shades from what they see online. Some of the things that arrive are faulty, parts of the products are chipped off and some of these items are nonreturnable. Hence, it is not worth the price when buying things online. There are instances when extra fees and additional charges are made when the products are delivered. Payment: Next, there is only one payment method for products purchased online that is through credit cards. As there are a lot of scams these days, most of them said they are unsure of the credibility and reliability of the sites visited online to purchase products. Therefore, they are afraid to reveal their personal particulars such as account numbers and credit card numbers online. Conclusion: In conclusion, at least seven in ten customers stated that customer advice is their number one reason why they prefer to shop in-store. In my opinion, personal services and customised advice ensure that a good purchase is guaranteed. Reported by, Mifzal (MIFZAL BIN SHUKRI) Practice 5 Model Answer Unfavourable Condition of the School Canteen Introduction: This report is based on a survey with 60 students and is aimed to find out their opinion on the school canteen. Overall, the students are not satisfied with the condition of the canteen. Quality of Food and Drinks: Firstly, the canteen serves junk food which is not healthy. As the price is affordable, many students are attracted to buy them. However, there is no nutritious value in junk food. Apart from junk food, the canteen also offers lots of fried food items such as fried nuggets, fried sausages, fried chicken and French fries. These foods contain too much oil and can bring about health problems to the students. Unhygienic Condition of Canteen: Furthermore, the students have found stains on the cutlery as they are not washed properly. The food and drinks are not covered even when there are many flies hovering around. Besides, the canteen workers are not properly attired although they have been told to wear aprons and caps. This is very unhygienic. Recommendation: In conclusion, the canteen operator should focus on including more nutritious meals in their menu. As in the case of fried food items, regular checks need to be done to ensure the oil used is of good RS SPM English-Answers.indd 274 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

Lastly, the authorities concerned should monitor and check the cleanliness of the school canteen so that the students can enjoy their recess in a clean and safe environment. It is made up of a number of mini-museums all under one roof. It is situated along Jalan Kota Bandar in the historical city of Melaka. Each floor has a number of different themes. There were traditional musical instruments of the various ethnic groups displayed on the ground floor, and the first floor was called the Kites Museum with other traditional Malaysian pastimes and games displayed there. In the Beauty Museum on the second floor, there were exhibits of tattoos, various materials used for body piercings and materials used as decorations around the neck. However, this museum must be equipped with air-conditioning facility to provide visitors a conducive environment with ticket prices at a lower rate for adults. In addition, it should be kept open at weekends and during the school holidays to enable more locals to visit the museum at such times. I would recommend all my friends and relatives to visit this museum as there are various materials of heritage belonging to the different ethnic groups in Malaysia. It will give locals and tourists an insight about the different cultures and traditions in the country. Practice 2 Model Answer A Modern Dance Performance I watched the modern dance performed by the Form Four students for the song, “Let’s Touch the Moon” on Teachers’ Day. All the students enjoyed the dance. They clapped and cheered throughout the performance to the rock music which was energetic. It was performed by a troupe of eight students; four boys and four girls. Their attire was colourful and eye-catching as the girls were dressed in skirts and sleeveless blouses. The boys wore comfortable and suitable decent clothing. However, at a certain juncture of the performance, the girls had to be lifted up and swayed by their respective male partners. This scene was indecent to look at because of the girls’ attire. The organiser of this event should look into the type of dance and music to which the students are performing. This is because Teachers’ Day is an official event in school. As such, all the performances have to be decently performed and the students have to be dressed in formal decent clothing so as to show their respect and appreciation to their teachers. I would not recommend such dances to be performed again for other celebrations in my school. It is because I am sure none of the teachers would enjoy watching such performances. Practice 3 Model Answer Holiday at Tioman Island During the recent holidays, I went to Tioman Island which is located 32 kilometres off Pahang. It contains four main villages, namely, Kampung Tekek, Kampung Salang, Kampung Juara and Kampung Air Batang. I stayed at a resort in Kampung Juara which had the most tranquil beach. There was also a turtle conservation centre nearby the resort. Every dawn, I enjoyed the direct sunrise facing the South China Sea. At every meal, I enjoyed eating seafood which was cooked by a chef from Thailand. There were varieties of delicious food such as steamed fish and vegetables, Thai prawn ‘satay’, Thai crispy fish topped with chilli sauce and many other mouth-watering dishes. Furthermore, there were various activities that I enjoyed such as rock climbing, snorkelling and jungle trekking. Although it was a small island, the jungle was dense and parts of the trek were slippery as it had rained the day before. I would recommend Tioman Island to those who have not been to an island for the holidays. It is an ideal holiday spot with plenty of resorts and spas. It is full of tourists from Europe at the end of the year as they come here to escape the winter over there. If you are looking for a cool, peaceful environment with white sandy beaches, this is the ideal place for you. RS SPM English-Answers.indd 275 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

ANSWERS Practice 4 Model Answer A Book Exhibition I visited the exhibition displayed at the school hall by the management of Global Bookstore. They were promoting their books through this exhibition. The books were displayed according to their categories such as fiction, non-fiction, travel, cookery, women and many more. The books were quite expensive, except for the fiction books. Most of the books were published in foreign countries; therefore, they were all in English. They were attractive with colourful pictures and most of them would have served the purpose if adults were to have visited the exhibition. My friends and I were interested only in the fiction books that had interesting stories in them. The management of Global Bookstore should have displayed books that are suitable for school students like us. The books were expensive and had not in any way met our needs and demands. The fiction books too were not at all suitable to be read by students as the storylines were only suitable for adults. Besides, although there were some which were suitable for students, they were unaffordable for us. I would not recommend this exhibition to be visited by my friends from other schools as it would be a waste of time for them. Practice 5 Model Answer A Life-Changing Autobiography “The Story of My Life” is an autobiography written by Helen Keller. As some of us might know, although Helen Keller was deaf, blind and mute, she defied the odds to become one of the most celebrated personalities in the world. The story was set in Alabama in 1997. In the first part of the book, Helen Keller writes about how she was afflicted with scarlet fever while she was still a baby. The illness left her deaf, blind and mute. The author then goes on to say how her life changed with the arrival of her newly-employed teacher and nanny, Anne Mansfield Sullivan. The second part of the book focuses on how Helen Keller studied the deaf and dumb language in addition to learning how to write using Braille. The story goes on to say how she spent the rest of her life helping the deaf and dumb all over the world. I enjoyed reading every page of the book. I found some sections of the book, especially those that deal with the early part of her life, poignant and touching. It made me realise how difficult life must be for the handicapped. It also made me realise how fortunate I am. I would recommend this book to all my friends as this book has a good moral lesson for all. It shows the triumph of the human spirit in the face of indomitable obstacles. Her life is a shining example to prove the adage, “where there is a will, there is a way”. Stories SPM Practices Practice 1 Model Answer A Lesson Learnt Last Sunday, there was a fun fair in town. Meg was excited to hear about it from her friends, but unfortunately, her father refused to let her go saying that the roads were not safe at night. However, Meg kept pleading and he finally agreed to let her go. Immediately, Meg went to buy the ticket. The fun fair was to start at 5.00 p.m. and end at 11.00 p.m., so she left the house at about 7.00 p.m. Meg was excited to see the stalls with various games. They were colourfully decorated. Firstly, she went on all the amusement rides. After that, she went to the food stalls to buy some food. Later, she went to the game stalls trying her luck to win some prizes. She won a few prizes. She looked at her watch and to her horror, it was almost 11.00 p.m., and most of the people had left. Then, without wasting any more time, she cycled home with all the prizes in one arm. There were no street lights along the road. Halfway, she was rudely stopped by two men armed with knives. They took her money, the prizes and her bicycle. Meg had to walk home, but she was thankful that she was not hurt. Meg stopped at the police station and lodged a report. When her father was informed by the police, he rushed to the police station. He scolded her for not listening to him. She regretted not taking heed of her father’s advice. Practice 2 Model Answer A Holiday Trip During the holidays, Hana’s parents took her to Kuala Lumpur to spend a few days there. They stayed at her aunt’s house for four days. On the first day, her uncle took all of them to the National Zoo. It was at least six times bigger than Taiping Zoo. There were many types of animals at the zoo. She saw a giraffe for the first time in her life. Hana and her cousins went on an elephant ride, too. It was extremely thrilling. RS SPM English-Answers.indd 276 22/03/2024 1:36 PM

ANSWERS The second day was a hectic one as they visited three places on that day. Firstly, they visited the Parliament which is a lovely multi-storey building. However, Hana was told that the Parliament sessions were held in a much smaller building that was beside the tall building. Then, they went to the Lake Gardens and had their packed lunch there. Her father hired a boat and both of them rowed leisurely in the calm and quiet lake. When the weather became hot in the afternoon, they went to the National Museum. They saw many ancient things. They took a lot of photographs outside the museum. The last two days were spent on shopping. Hana’s aunt took them to the One Utama Plaza. There were numerous shops, each selling a wide variety of goods. Many items caught her eye but her mother bought her two dresses and a pair of sandals. They returned to Taiping two days before school reopened. They were tired but happy. Practice 3 Model Answer A Dangerous Incident Two months ago, Ali’s parents had gone abroad on a business trip. His grandparents came over to stay and take care of him. About a week after his parents’ departure, they realised that one or two chickens and ducks had begun to go missing daily. Ali accompanied his grandfather to venture out into the bushes around his neighbourhood to look for the missing poultry. However, they were nowhere to be seen. The next morning, Ali and his grandmother went to the pen as they heard the chickens clucking away. As they opened the pen, Ali noticed a big, shiny object at the corner of the pen. It had yellow, orange and black spots on it. Suddenly, to their horror, the object leaped towards them with its mouth wide open. Ali screamed and pulled his grandmother aside. They then ran out of the pen. His grandmother tripped and fell but Ali managed to help her up. It was a huge python. He called 999 and within a few minutes, the firemen arrived. They caught it in a sack and it was taken away. Luckily, Ali had gone along with his grandmother who was old and had poor eyesight. Otherwise, he dreaded to think what would have happened to her if the python had attacked her. Ali called and told his parents about the whole incident. His father then called some workers to pull down the chicken pen and the ground was made empty that afternoon itself. Unit 4 Speaking 4.3 Individual Long-turn SPM Practices Practice 1 Sample Answers 1 A fundraising event was held at my school last month. 2 The aim of the event was to raise funds to buy new tables and benches for the school canteen. Another aim of the event was to upgrade the school library. 3 The students did many activities to raise funds such as have a car wash, a food fair and a sale of second-hand clothes and books. 4 The benefits of holding a fundraising event include raising money to achieve your planned goals as well as strengthening the bond among teachers and students. Practice 2 Sample Answers 1 A person who has great influence on me is my favourite teacher, Madam Joyce Leong. 2 She is 40 years old and wears a pair of square spectacles. 3 She is well liked and has great influence on me because she is always kind and patient as she always listens to what we have to say before giving her opinion. She also shares her life experiences with us and at the end of each lesson, she listens to our thoughts and suggestions. 4 It is important for students to have a role model in life as they can obtain guidance, advice or suggestions before making any decisions. Practice 3 Model Answer The recent cross-country run was held in February 20__ at our school. It was on a Friday and when the announcement was made, I felt excited. Two weeks before the event, practice was held every day after school from 2.00 p.m. till 4.30 p.m. I practised without fail, even at weekends. The last two days before the event, the other participants and I were taken along the route so that we would be familiar with the path on the day of the event. On the day of cross-country run, I felt excited and happy. I ran steadily and won second prize. I was extremely proud of myself. My friends and teachers congratulated me. 278 ANSWERS help us to be alert along the paths that we take. We may face hills, turn into paths and possibly even go over objects that may appear as obstacles on the path. Cross-country runs also help to strengthen our muscles. Practice 4 Model Answer On the 17th of January, we celebrated our teacher’s birthday in school. My classmates and I had wanted to make the celebration a surprise for her. About two weeks earlier, my class monitor collected some money from all of us. We bought her a gift and my mother baked a big beautiful cake with purple icing on it. On the day, before her lesson started, we quickly put up some balloons and lit the candles on the cake. When she walked in, we sang her the birthday song. She was indeed surprised and thanked us. She blew out the candles and cut the cake. My class monitor gave her the gift and my teacher was touched that we had remembered her birthday. I think every teacher’s birthday should be celebrated by the students as it will make him or her feel appreciated and loved. Practice 5 Model Answer Reading is my pastime. I read both fiction and non-fiction books. I have a bookshelf where I keep all of my books. Most of the time, I purchase the books at the book shop but sometimes, I visit the town library to borrow some books. Sometimes I read in my room alone but most of the time, everyone in my family reads when we are in the living room. We also share our reading experience among ourselves after reading. I enjoy reading very much because my vocabulary has improved and I have become proficient in the English language. Furthermore, my pastime has helped me in widening my knowledge. Through reading, I have better ideas when it comes to essay writing. Besides, I am also able to organise my writing according to the ideas. I do not struggle to write and my spelling has improved too. Practice 6 Model Answer Most students go for tuition because they are unable to cope with the lessons taught by their teachers in the classroom. They skip classes or do not pay attention when lessons are taught in school. Therefore, they are unable to do any work given by their teachers. I do not go for tuition classes. It’s because I pay attention to my teachers when lessons are taught and ask my teachers for further explanation if I do not understand or have a doubt. Besides that, I revise that day’s lessons after doing my homework. Just as I do, other students too should ask their teachers to explain anything that they do not understand about the lesson. Besides, revision of lessons needs to be done on a daily basis so that the next day’s lesson can be understood easily. It is beneficial when students do not go for tuition. They can save their money and avoid getting confused further. It’s because teachers in schools teach according to their lesson plan but at tuition, most tuition teachers teach as to their own convenience. 4.4 Discussion SPM Practices Practice 1 Points to consider for discussion: • Inform neighbours of whereabouts – Tell them to keep an eye on our home while we are away. • Lock doors – Make sure all entries are locked. • Install CCTV – Able to look out for suspicious characters around our home. • Avoid posting current location on social media – Makes it convenient for burglars to know our whereabouts and plan a break-in. • Get to know neighbours – Make sure we know who they are and their contact numbers. • Inform nearest police station – If we are going on a holiday, ask the police to make constant rounds if neighbourhood is a quiet place. Points to consider for further discussion task: • Financial problems – Committing a theft or burglary is the easiest way to get money. • Unemployment – People do not have jobs so they do not have enough money or no money at all to survive – families to provide for. • Rising cost of living – Everything is getting expensive but salary remains the same. • Thrill of stealing – Some people get excited when they are able to steal and get away with it. • Peer pressure – Teenagers steal because they are coaxed by their friends. 281 ANSWERS Part 2 (Guided Writing) Question 2 Model Answer Malaysia is a multiracial country. The Malays celebrate Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji. A month before Hari Raya Puasa, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset during the month of Ramadan. They avoid sinful behaviours such as lying, gossiping or fighting and also perform extra prayers. The Chinese celebrate the beginning of a new year according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The dates of the Chinese Lunar New Year vary every year. Usually, children will go back to their parents’ homes to attend a family reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve. The Indians are mostly Hindus and they celebrate Deepavali. Homes are decorated with oil lamps to symbolise the victory of good over evil. It is also known as the Festival of Lights. Christmas is celebrated by the Christians on the 25th of December every year. They attend church services and have feasts with family and friends. My favourite festival is Christmas because my birthday is on Christmas Day and it is a public holiday in Malaysia. Part 3 (Extended Writing) Question 3 Model Answer Try my tested tips to drive away stress! Too much stress is bad for our health. There are many ways to get rid of stress. Normally, when you sense a threat or danger, your body rises to the challenge by releasing stress hormones, tightening your muscles, raising your blood pressure and making your heart and lungs work harder. When danger subsides, your body goes back to normal. There are other ways to release stress besides sleeping and eating. We can do some meditation in a quiet place. It helps to make you feel at ease and peaceful. Relaxation exercise slows your breathing, reduces your heart rate, and lowers your stress hormones. Take 10 very slow breaths in and out while imagining being in your favourite vacation place. Hold this image for a few minutes and notice how relaxing it is. Try to get 150 minutes per week of brisk walking. It is important for all aspects of health, including stress management. Laughter is considered to be the best medicine. Laughter reduces stress hormones. Reduce the loud noise in your environment. Loud noise triggers the stress response. Listen to soothing music to elicit a relaxation response. Positive thoughts help boost positive emotions. Praising and supporting yourself helps reduce stress. We all want to be independent, but it is okay to ask a friend or family member to listen to your concerns or to help you get groceries, mow the lawn, or lift something heavy. Relieving a burden—either physical or mental—will help reduce stress. Question 4 Model Answer It was the first day of the SPM trial examination and Eliza was feeling tense. She had burnt the midnight oil last night to prepare for her English Language paper. English was one of her weakest subjects and she tended to make a lot of careless mistakes. All the SPM candidates were allowed into the examination hall half an hour before the examination. Eliza’s classmates were very helpful and tried their best to keep Eliza calm since they knew how she will panic at the slightest thing during examinations. Rina, her best friend, told her to take deep breaths to maintain her cool. The examination papers were distributed by the invigilators. The invigilators reminded the candidates to follow all the rules they had announced. Candidates were not allowed to talk to the other candidates in the examination hall. The chief invigilator told the candidates to write down their index number on the question paper. Eliza did not know what to do. She started looking around at the other candidates. One of the invigilators noticed her peculiar behaviour and informed the chief invigilator. The chief invigilator walked up to Eliza and asked her why she was looking around. Eliza could not say anything. This aroused the invigilator’s suspicion. Just then, Eliza saw her class teacher outside the examination hall. Mrs Grace Chong had come to inform the invigilators about Eliza’s panic attacks. After listening to Mrs Grace Chong, the chief invigilator understood Eliza’s behaviour and calmed Eliza down.
