3 Ways to Motivate Children at Home The relationship between parents and children is crucial. At present, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused strains in some families due to stress from various factors. Here are some ways to help rebuild that trust and strengthen the relationship between parents and children. Firstly, when children participate in creating guidelines and schedules, they are more likely to believe the guidelines are important, accept them and follow them. To involve children, parents can set up a family meeting. At the meeting, parents can discuss the schedule and ask children for their input on decisions like what time everyone should be out of bed and dressed, when breaks from schoolwork would work best and where each family member should be during study time. Besides that, parents can present some chores around the house, and children can choose which they prefer. For example, they can also pick when or how they complete them. Apart from that, children will be more open to hearing about what they need to do if they feel that their own perspectives are understood. When things aren’t working out, parents can try engaging in joint problem-solving with their children, which means employing empathy, identifying the issue and fi nding ways to resolve it. When parents provide reasons for why they are asking for something, children can understand the importance of acting in particular ways. Reasons will be most effective when they are meaningful to the children in terms of the children’s own goals. For example, a parent can say that dividing family chores will help everyone have more time for fun activities after dinner. Chocolate is (1) make from the fruit of cacao trees, which are native to Central and South America. The fruits (2) is called pods and each pod contains around 40 cacao beans. It’s unclear exactly when cacao came on the scene or who invented it. The cacao beans are (3) drying and roasted to create cocoa beans. The Aztecs took chocolate admiration to another level. They believed cacao was given to them (4) with their gods. Like the Mayans, they enjoyed (5) a caffeinated kick of hot or cold, spiced chocolate beverages. They also used cacao beans as currency to buy food and other goods. In Aztec culture, cacao beans (6) are considered more valuable than gold. 8 Read the text below and complete the following table with no more than three words and/or a number from the text for each answer. Part 3 – Information Transfer Water Drinking water (either plain or in the form of other fl uids or food) is essential to your health. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fl uids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and maintenance of body temperature. When you are low on fl uids, the brain triggers the body’s thirst mechanism. Water can help control calories. If you choose water or a non-caloric beverage over a caloric beverage and/or eat a diet higher in water-rich foods that are healthier, more fi lling, it will help you trim calorie intake. Water helps energise muscles. Cells that don’t maintain their balance of fl uids result in muscle fatigue. Water helps keep skin looking good. Dehydration makes your skin look dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration. Water helps your kidneys in cleansing and ridding your body of toxins. Body fl uids transport waste products in and out of cells. When you’re getting enough fl uids, urine fl ows freely, is light in colour and free of odour. Finally, water helps maintain normal bowel function. Adequate hydration keeps things fl owing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation. So, don’t forget to keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk or in your bag and always keep yourself hydrated. 10 April Partridge April lives with her mother Nina and stepfather Nigel, both caterers. April works full-time as a chef assistant at the Ivy in London’s West End while studying for a Professional Chef Scholarship from Westminster Kingsway College. “When I was 14, the only thing I made myself was spaghetti hoops on toast. But at 15, I did two weeks’ work experience at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, making shepherd’s pies.” Positive feedback from the club prompted her school to enter April for the Rotary Young Chef competition, and she was in the top four in the national fi nal. “I made a rhubarb assiette consisting of a mini rhubarb crumble tartlet, a vanilla panna cotta with rhubarb, and poached rhubarb sticks, and a judge said it was ‘Michelin Star standard’. It made all the countless practices worthwhile.” Then, talent-spotting Gary Lee – senior head chef at the Ivy – offered her a Saturday job. Her very fi rst day, she plated up a squash salad, then learned it was for Anthony Hopkins. At 17, she quit school to train as an Ivy chef assistant. “I was quite shy, but now I’m one of the lads,” she says. “I’d probably do this job without pay. It made me confi dent socially, although I don’t have much social life. When I do go to a party, I have a blast, but then I’ll ask Mum: ‘Will you pick me up at 11.30? I’m working with knives tomorrow’ and I have toast and go to bed.” “She’s more methodical, artistic, hardworking and consistent than some boys with 10 years’ experience,” says Gary Lee. “She might be better than me.” While Gary is April’s mentor, Heston Blumenthal is her hero: “The way he takes food to a completely new level takes my breath away.” Apart from junk food, what food wouldn’t April eat? “Nothing – I’d try anything, except horses, cats and dogs. I’ve opened up to offal, squid and other things with faces.” Asked her favourite place to eat out in Chingford, April replies: “My parents make such good food, why would I want to go out to eat? Anyway, at the Ivy, I get breakfast at morning briefi ng, lunch at 11 a.m. and dinner at 4.30.” Source: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2011/apr/17/teens-adolescents-food-eating-cooking Read the text and answer the questions that follow. 80 Part 3 You should spend about 20 minutes in this part. Read the letter below and complete the following table with no more than three words and/or a number from the text for each answer. Hi Theresa, How are you? I hope you are in the pink of health. I am completely stoked to hear that you will be going for a holiday to Penang in July. Since you will be spending four days there, I think you will be able to visit many places and carry out many activities. This is my favourite state in Malaysia. So you have defi nitely come to the right person for advice. In my opinion, I think you should visit Georgetown – the capital of Penang. There are many activities to do there. For example, you can stroll along the streets and see the beautiful street art depicting the lives of local people. You can also pose beside the street art and take some pictures. In addition, you should visit the historical sites here. Besides that, there are also local delicacies which you must not miss to savour such as the famous Penang laksa and thirstquenching cendol. At night, you can visit the night markets, which are just a stone’s throw from the historical sites. Each night market is unique in its own way. I am sure you will love them due to their lively atmosphere and the little stalls which would captivate your eyes. You can get all sorts of things there such as food, clothing, jewellery, phone covers, toys, imitation designer bags and even paintings. You can also buy your souvenirs there as they are affordable. I think that is all for now. Do let me know if you need more recommendations because I have plenty more to suggest. Have a whale of a time with your family and update me when you return home.
