25 Reading and Use of English UNIT 1 Answers and Analysis No. Answer Analysis 0 A We use the pronoun ‘who’ to add information about a person we just mentioned (infl uencers). 1 D We use the adverb ‘specifi cally’ to describe something (an infl uencer’s eff ect on other people) in a more exact/detailed way. 2 A We use ‘about’ to show that one is making a guess at a number/percentage or that number/percentage isn’t exact. 3 B is option refers to a ‘subject matter’ that infl uencers are sharing with their followers. Each subject has a lot of information or facts to cover. 4 C is word refers to behaviour patterns of a particular group (infl uencers). By contrast, ‘lifestyle’ means daily practices of an individual or habits. 5 C We use the word ‘growing’ to mean that something is increasing, i.e., in feelings (interest in infl uencer culture) and size (number of infl uencers). 6 B is is the best phrasal verb to use because it means to begin a task (make regular posts on Instagram). 7 B is is the best option to mean causing a feeling (interest in a particular topic) to exist. 8 C is word refers to the infl uence of infl uencers. Infl uencers are able to cause change in someone else’s behaviour (eff ect). e words ‘power’, ‘authority’ or ‘control’ don’t refer to the infl uencers’ ability to infl uence others. 9 D We use this conjunction to join two parts of a sentence. ‘because’ is used to show reason. Among them included not allowing any gadgets to be used in his bedroom in order to remove any temptations to play at night. ey said thankfully Tanish had admitted to himself that he had a problem and hated how video games had consumed his life. Tanish also told them how he had neglected me and his other school friends. And the reason he hadn’t reached out was because he was feeling embarrassed. I was so happy that Tanish was getting the help he needed. After the talk with Tanish’s parents, I thought about inviting Tanish out with our friends. I made the fi rst move and asked him to join us for a hiking trip. Tanish was reluctant at fi rst because he wondered if the rest of the group would feel awkward that he was there. I told him that everyone really missed him and wanted to have the old group back. During the outing, everyone greeted and chatted with Tanish as they always had and I could see how relieved he felt. After that outing, he joined us on another and then, another. Soon, I saw the jovial friend once again. One day, out of the blue, Tanish thanked me for not giving up on him. • opted out (line 3) – to choose not to be involved in something • prying into (line 10) – to be interested in one's personal issues • curb (line 28) – control • out of the blue (line 40–41) – something than happened unexpectedly 1 In paragraph 2, why does the writer use the phrase give him some space? A He respected Tanish’s privacy. B He felt annoyed with Tanish’s attitude. C He was shocked by Tanish’s behaviour. D He didn’t want to cause more problems for Tanish. 2 In paragraph 3, what does the writer say about Tanish’s behaviour? A He was showing a lack of concern for others. Reading and Use of English 34 1 3 In paragraph 4, what major step did the writer take towards helping Tanish? A He got his mother’s input. B He surfed the internet for information. C He brainstormed with Tanish’s parents. D He read a lot about video game addiction. 4 In paragraph 5, the writer didn’t have anything to be nervous about because A Tanish and the writer were childhood friends. B Tanish was already getting the help he needed. C Tanish fi nally admitted that he had a problem. D Tanish’s parents welcomed his concern for their son. 5 What eff ect did seeking professional help have? A Tanish’s parents knew how to help him recover. B Tanish was able to confront his problem head on. C Tanish’s parents were able to identify his problem. D Tanish was willing to make positive changes in his life. 6 What was stopping Tanish from reconnecting with the writer? A Shame for his past behaviour. B Denial about his problem. C Anger towards himself. D Fear of being judged. 7 How does the writer feel about Tanish in the last paragraph? HOTS Analysing A Happy that he is himself again. B Satisfi ed with the changes he has made. C Relieved that his interests were expanding. D Proud with what he had accomplished so far. 8 What is the purpose of the writer writing the article? HOTS Analysing A To warn readers about the dangers of video game addiction. B To remind himself about the challenges in friendships. C To share a diffi cult time in the life of a dear friend. D To highlight the beauty of friendship. Answers and Analysis No. Answer Analysis 1 A When the writer uses this phrase, he wants to give his friend some time to fi gure out his problems. We know this from the clues “to sort out his issues” and “solved” the problems. 2 D e clues are in the phrases “looked messy” and “personal hygiene”. From these phrases, we know that the writer’s friend wasn’t paying attention to his grooming hence taking less care in his appearance (letting himself go). 3 A e writer talked to his mother. at was not only the fi rst but also most important step because it got the ball rolling and other positive events (identifying the problems, looking for more information, talking to the parents, etc) began to take place. 35 Reading and Use of English UNIT 1 No. Answer Analysis 4 D e writer was nervous because he didn’t know how Tanish’s parents would react to him telling them that their son had a video game addiction. ey could have become angry with the writer, denied the truth or become upset because the writer was talking about something personal. e phrase “relieved and happy” tells us that they acknowledged that they knew about their son’s problem. 5 A e answer is in paragraph 5. Professional help gave the parents tools to help their son. We know this because the parents told the writer and his mother the actual steps they were taking to curb their son’s addiction to playing video games. 6 A e answer is in paragraph 5. e clues are the phrases “neglected me and his other school friends” and “feeling embarrassed”. e writer’s friend was ashamed for how he treated his friends and couldn’t reach out to them. 7 A e writer writes positively about the changes happening to his friend. We can only conclude that he is happy because the friend is participating in group activities like before and being “jovial” again. 8 C e article describes what the writer’s friend went through due to video game addiction. We can conclude that the writer wants to share the diffi culties he saw his friend go through; the changes in behaviour and how it aff ected his friend as well as him. I still remember my fi rst trip to Sri Lanka like it happened yesterday. Once I got there, I contacted a friend, a travel vlogger, whom I had met online a few months earlier. We met the following morning and Damesh took me to a restaurant to have an authentic Sri Lankan breakfast. Over our meal, we chatted and he off ered to take me to lesser-known landmarks in the city. Along the way, Damesh pointed out diff erent types of trees and plants. en, a large wooden house came into view. When we got closer, two women came out of the house calling out friendly greetings to Damesh. Damesh introduced me to a middle-aged woman and her mother. After the introductions, they took Damesh and me on a tour of their garden. Since Damesh didn’t tell me about the content the mother-daughter duo provided on their channel, I asked them. It makes for a complete neighbourhood except for one thing; safety. My family as well as the other residents have been feeling this way after a string of recent robberies created fear and caused us to lose our peace of mind. To regain some sense of security, some residents installed home-alarm systems while others put extra lights outside their houses. Several others resorted to hacks to give the impression that someone was at home during the day to dissuade thieves from targeting their houses. Unfortunately, all these measures only lessened the number of incidents but didn’t stop them altogether. RE SPM English-Unit 1.indd 37 13/04/2023 2:36 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
Reading and Use of English 38 1 Fed up of feeling helpless, a group of residents formed a neighbourhood association. Since safety was the top priority, they got to work organising a neighbourhood security system. e plan included employing guards to patrol the area and setting up security posts and checkpoints at various roads in order to monitor who enters the neighbourhood. e purpose was to curb strangers from gaining access into the neighbourhood in order to scout for houses to break in or watch the owners’ movements. At the same time, the committee put in an application to get permission from the authorities. While waiting for approval, a group of residents volunteered to patrol the neighbourhood every evening. e residents were eagerly awaiting approval but it came as a shock to us when it was denied! Only then did we fi nd out that one resident wasn’t happy that the committee had set up security checkpoints. e resident wrote a letter of complaint to the local newspaper lamenting that he felt trapped in his own neighbourhood because the roads leading to his house wasn’t easily accessible. e committee did the only thing they could do; continue having walking patrols. One day a few weeks into their patrolling, a member spotted a man hiding behind the bushes watching a house. A police car with three policemen arrived within ten minutes. e police talked to the homeowner and each member of the neighbourhood patrol. One member showed them the footage of the incident. After the police took away the robber in their car, the members stayed behind to talk to the homeowner. e owner didn’t speak at fi rst so the members off ered some comforting words. When the homeowner continued to remain silent, members exchanged confused looks. en, he admitted that he was against the setting up of the checkpoints and he had aired his grievances in a letter to the newspaper. After a lot of thought, I decided to give it a try. First, I surfed the internet for more information. Next, I asked around for someone who was willing to go on this adventure with me. e fi rst few people I asked, refused outright. ey even wondered why I wanted to do it. When I fi nally got a ‘Yes!’ from Karen, I was not only ecstatic but also a little less afraid because I had a friend with me for the ride. Part of my research included fi nding out about skydiving centres. I read online reviews to help me identify what questions I should be asking the centres when I called them. eir answers would help me pick a centre that I could trust and felt comfortable with. I fi nally chose one that met all the stringent safety guidelines and had good reviews too. After selecting the centre, Karen and I read everything we could get our hands on about skydiving for beginners. Even after knowing what to expect, I was still a bundle of nerves the day before the jump. As recommended, I didn’t over-indulge in food or over-stimulate myself physically. I relaxed because I knew my senses would be on overdrive the following day. I ate light meals and prepared snacks for the following day too. I had an early dinner and went to bed an hour earlier. e following morning, I wore the recommended attire for skydiving. is meant no pants with strings or clothes with accessories because they may fl ap wildly or be pulled off by the wind. I wore comfortable and wellfi tted trainers too. After Karen came over, we left. At the centre, we registered and then, listened carefully to the briefi ng. Karen and I had earlier decided to do tandem skydiving. is meant that we each would be attached to a licensed skydiving instructor when we made the jump. is was less frightening than a solo jump but scary nonetheless. After the briefi ng, I was introduced to my instructor. He put the harness on me and told me how to position my body; the ‘arch’ position, pelvis forward while keeping my chin high during free-fall and lift my legs when landing. en, we got on the plane and the instructor invited us to enjoy the view. As I looked out of the window, my nervousness reduced as my excitement grew. We fl ew for about 20 minutes before we reached the right exit altitude. e instructor checked all the harnesses again and then, we walked together to the door. I turned to look at Karen who had a big smile on her face. I returned her smile and gave her a thumbs up. When the door opened, we walked to the edge and jumped. e next few seconds seemed like a dream. I later learnt that I was falling at about 200 km per hour. But I didn’t feel like I was falling, more like I was fl oating. After about 50 seconds, the instructor deployed the parachute. e parachute ride gave me the opportunity to experience ‘fl ying’ and enjoy the beautiful landscape below. I got the chance to fl y the parachute just for a few seconds with the instructor’s help. As we approached land, the instructor took over and fl ew it almost like fl ying an aircraft. I remembered what I was supposed to do. en, I gently touched down and slid on the ground. I lay on the ground for a few seconds before I got up and took off the harness. My adrenaline was still high and I was so proud of myself. As I thanked my instructor and began walking to a vehicle waiting to take us back to the centre, I saw Karen and her instructor land too. After she unhooked her harness, she came running towards me. We couldn’t stop talking about our experience for the next few days. We each had a picture capturing our moments free-falling. Reading and Use of English 42 1 Practice 4 Read an extract from a magazine article and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. e fi rst time I heard about the Orient Express was when I read Agatha Christie’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’. I enjoyed the murder mystery but was just as interested in the setting of the story; the Orient Express. So I did some research. I found out that the Orient Express was a long-distance passenger service train that was launched on 4 October 1883. At fi rst, it was a normal international railway service but later its name became equated with luxury service and travel. Its original route took passengers from Paris to Constantinople, now known as Istanbul in Turkey. Everything inside the train—from its velvet curtains to the fi ne crystal glassware—screamed grandeur and comfort at a time when travelling was uncomfortable and dangerous. e Orient Express stopped travelling to Istanbul in 1977, making its last stop at Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. In 1991, the service route was shortened again to Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. Later in 2001, the route was further shortened to end at Vienna, the capital of Austria. On 8 June 2007, the Orient Express operated for the last time from Paris to Vienna. After this, it took passengers from Strasbourg, a city in eastern France, to Vienna. e Orient Express ceased operations on 14 December 2009. ankfully, the Orient Express didn’t disappear all together. A private company called Belmond who operates luxury hotels, trains services and river cruises all over the world now off ers the Orient Express experience. Besides off ering luxury train journeys in the UK, Scotland, Ireland, the USA, East Asia and Peru, they run the Venice-Simplon-Orient Express (VSOE) train service. e VSOE uses the original 1920s and 1930s carriages. It has routes from London to Venice and the original Orient Express route from Paris to Istanbul. Taking a journey on the VSOE is a chance to step back in time. ere are placards that describe the history of each carriage. It is as much an adventure discovering the history and beauty inside the train as it is exploring the various stops along the route. While enjoying the scenic views of the European countryside during the trip, passengers can mingle with fellow passengers or even write postcards which will get a special VSOE stamp. Travelling on the VSOE is a once-in-a-lifetime experience so take time to document your time in the train. Take videos and photographs and remember to include yourself in them. Each moment is special and it starts when passengers board the train. Staff in uniform and white gloves wait at the platform to welcome passengers. en, a steward shows each passenger to their cabin. A spotless antique-looking brown interior greets passengers when they step into their cabins. Besides a comfortable bed, there are beautiful, rich furnishings and upholstery. ere are high-end toiletries to go with a working wash basin that provides hot and cold running water. Unless a passenger books one of the three grand suites, which has double beds, a small living space and an attached bathroom, all other passengers have to use the toilet at the end of each carriage. Robes and slippers are provided if passengers want to lounge in their cabins. ough the cabins have a 1920s design, there are sockets to charge electronic devices. Another experience to savour is the food. All meals are prepared by French chefs using seasonal ingredients that are loaded onto the train at each stop. Food is inclusive of the fare but passengers have to pay extra for anything they order from the ala carte menu. Passsengers get a continental breakfast served in their cabins, tea and dinner daily. ere are two dinner sittings; 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Passengers will be asked about their seating preference earlier in the day. If you’re travelling alone or with a companion, opt to sit with other travellers as it is great way to meet new people. As you enjoy what VSOE has to off er inside its carriages, don’t forget to take in the beautiful scenery outside. It moves at a slow speed of about 64 km per hour so you can enjoy the changing countryside leisurely. RE SPM English-Unit 1.indd 42 13/04/2023 2:36 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

For several years now, I have been donating to programmes that help save sea turtles. Even though my ultimate goal was to volunteer my time and eff ort, I was happy knowing that my contribution was being used to save turtles. But my goal became a reality when at 19, my parents agreed to let me volunteer at a sea turtle rescue centre in Bali. After getting their permission, I quickly went online and registered for the programme that I always had my eye on. After three long weeks, I received a reply. From then on, all I did was prepare for my three-month stint in Nusa Penida Island. After several months of preparing, it was time to leave for Bali. e fl ight was uneventful and once I landed, I quickly sent a message to my parents telling them that I had arrived safely. I looked around for the representative from the centre and spotted a man holding a sign. I approached him and introduced myself. Someone greeted me fi rst and then, I introduced myself. Soon everyone was taking turns to introduce themselves. After everyone on the list had arrived, we piled into a bus to the jetty so we could take a ferry to the island. I was so glad that the organisers gave us lunch before we got a briefi ng and a tour. I got the chance to bury some eggs and help mark the nests too. e best part of working at the hatchery was watching the baby turtles emerge from the sand pit. en, I would gather the baby turtles and put them in a small tank. e hatchlings were usually released on Fridays. And on one Friday, I got the honour to do it. A few of us, each carrying a pail with baby turtles, made our way to the beach. I asked someone to record the moment. As I watched the waves sweep the baby turtles into the sea, I said a silent prayer that they would all beat the odds and grow into adulthood and maybe return to this very beach, one day, to nest. Later that day, I watched the video again and couldn’t help smiling. I sent it to my parents who immediately replied with a ‘love’ emoji. e next few weeks fl ew by and soon it was my last day at the centre. I was happy to go home but sad that my time at the centre was coming to an end. I can honestly say that there wasn’t a single thing I didn’t enjoy while at the centre. Reading and Use of English 46 1 Practice 6 Read an extract from an article and choose the best answer A, B, C or D. Ken and I were close all through primary school and about a year into secondary school. en, something changed. I noticed that he started talking more about clothes, shoes and electronic devices. I realised that they were all the styles and brands that most of our peers were wearing or using at that time. I was surprised at his topic of conversation every time we met because he was never interested in fashion before. I wondered if his sudden interest in fashion had anything to do with trying to be like everyone else in school. I brought up the subject with him and asked if he was really into fashion. I didn’t want to suggest that he was only interested in something just because other students were into it. He insisted that his interests were changing and growing and I believed him. I always trusted Ken to make smart choices or seek good advice before making a decision. However, I had no way of knowing what turmoil he was experiencing. It didn’t help that he wasn’t talking freely with me like he used to. Most of our conversations were about what other students were doing. His free time wasn’t fi lled with his usual hobbies but spent at malls and cafes. I’m all for trying new activities but at the back of my mind, I was worried if there were other new things he was trying out. I had seen some of the students he hung out with smoke but thankfully, Ken wasn’t with them at that time. I knew something major was happening in Ken’s life when his schoolwork began to suff er. He had always been an above average student. He took schoolwork seriously and sometimes pushed me to work hard. I knew Ken had goals and one of them was pursuing his studies at university. Getting into a good university was already very competitive. Ken was unnecessarily jeopardising his future by neglecting his studies now. It was, then, I decided to have a serious talk with him. I was nervous about talking to Ken but I knew I had to at least try to fi nd out what was happening. When I asked him, he was quiet for a moment. en, there was a look of relief on his face. He said that he knew his schoolwork was suff ering because he had been preoccupied with trying to fi t in. He said that he worried that he would be made fun of if he was diff erent from his peers. He told me he only wanted to make little changes to his clothes and try new activities. He never realised that thinking what others thought about him would overtake his life. I could sense that Ken was feeling embarrassed. I told him that he was strong and even with how his life had changed, he didn’t go down a self-destructive path like smoking, lying to his parents or playing truant. I told Ken that I had seen some of the students he hung out with smoke and asked him if he had ever done that. Ken said he knew that his new friends smoked and they were asking him to do it too. He had always refused but it was getting increasingly hard to keep putting them off . ey were starting to make fun of him each time he came up with an excuse not to smoke. I was so happy to hear that Ken had stuck to his guns. I told him that and he smiled. He said that he never imagined trying to fi t in would unnecessarily put him in diffi cult situations. I praised Ken for making good choices even under pressure. And I told him that I was glad he trusted me enough to open up. I off ered to help him in any way possible. He thanked me and added that he realised that he was headed down an unhealthy path because the pressure was getting to be too much. en, I saw a look of determination on his face. I knew, then, that things would get better for Ken. RE SPM English-Unit 1.indd 46 13/04/2023 2:36 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

B He didn’t feel he was ready to hear it. C He didn’t think it was right to make such an accusation. D He didn’t have enough information to come to that conclusion. 3 In paragraph 2, what did the writer say about his friend’s behaviour? A He was making poor choices. C He was acting out of the ordinary. B He was abandoning his friends. D He was indulging in unhealthy habits. 4 In paragraph 3, why did the writer feel he had to have a serious talk with his friend? You have to choose the correct missing sentences from the eight options given. ere are two extra sentences/options that you do not need. 5 is section carries 6 marks. Guidelines and Tips 1 Read the instructions. en, read the options A to H. 2 Read the passage carefully. When you come to a gap, refer to the options given. Match the sentences (write the letter) with the gaps that you are sure about. Remember to fi nish all the matching before choosing your fi nal answers. 3 If you aren’t sure which sentence goes in the gap, leave it and continue reading. 4 If you think there are two sentences from the options that may fi t the gap, write both letters down and check again later. 5 Now, read the passage again. When you come to a gap that you aren’t sure about, read the sentences before and after the gap carefully. ere will be a link between these sentences and the missing sentence. 6 See the example below. Read the paragraph given. For as long as I can remember, my father has been talking about going on a backpacking holiday. Option A has the phrase I added, which tells us that the speaker is giving the father another reason to let him join the trip. You can also look at the sentence after the gap. It uses a common reference word (personal pronoun) I. is tells us that the sentence that matches the gap should also be about the speaker and have the personal pronoun I. 7 Once you have matched all the sentences with the gaps, read the passage again. Make sure that the missing sentence for each gap links with the sentence before and after. Now, write down your fi nal answers. When he fi nally announced that he was going to Cambodia, I asked if I could join him. My father thought about it for a moment and then, agreed. We arrived in the capital of Cambodia late one Sunday evening. We went straight to our hostel. Our room was clean and most importantly, our beds were comfortable. e next morning after breakfast, we explored the city of Phnom Penh. 1 C e structures on the grounds were magnifi cent and beautiful. Next, we went to the Independence Monument and joined a walking tour. 2 H It was a long walk but I didn’t mind at all because the weather was fi ne and the view of the Mekong River was scenic. I only realised how tired I was when my father and I got to our room. I had a bath and went to sleep. In the morning, my father and I woke up late. We visited two museums and then, returned to our hostel room to prepare for the next leg of our trip. 3 A After travelling a distance of over 350 km, we arrived at our destination. e journey was uncomfortable and I didn’t sleep well but the thought of what was waiting for us at Siem Reap more than made up for it. After a quick stop to bathe and change at our hostel room, we took a tuk-tuk to the Angkor Archaeological Park. 4 D My father bought a multi-day pass and rented bicycles so we could explore on our own. My father and I were speechless when we fi rst looked at Angkor Wat. 5 E As I explored the temple up close, I was glad that I had read a little about its history and features. I also understood why it is not only one of the seven wonders of the world but also a UNESCO Heritage Site. e decorative features and carvings on the walls depicted historical events and mythological stories. 6 G As my father and I leisurely explored the temple, I realised that I was living a oncein-a-lifetime experience that I know both of us would never forget. A Later that day, we had a 12-hour bus trip to Siem Reap. E e fi rst word that came to my mind was ‘grand’. B e 3-km broadwalk was along the famous river. F It was easier getting around the park on bicycles. C We visited the Royal Palace, the main attraction in the city. G I felt like I had stepped back in time. Reading and Use of English 50 1 Answers and Analysis No. Answer Analysis 1 C e word city in the sentence before the gap links to Option C. ey were going to visit the Royal Palace which was also located in the city. 2 H e travellers went for a long walk (sentence after). e phrase long walk in the sentence after refers to the phrase stroll along Sisowath Quay in Option H. e word stroll means to walk in a leisurely way. 3 A e phrase next leg of our trip in the sentence before the gap is the clue. So we know that the travellers are going somewhere. e phrase 12-hour bus trip to Siem Reap in Option A connects it with the sentence before. 4 D e phrase Angkor Archaeological Park in the sentence before the gap tells us that the missing sentence should have details about the places (Angkor Wat and Angkor om) they are going to visit in the park. 5 E e speaker described his fi rst impression of Angkor Wat in the sentence before and the word speechless is the clue. e speaker didn’t say anything at fi rst because he was in awe. So the next sentence should refer to his rst word (clue in Option E). 6 G In the sentence before the gap, the clue is historical events which refer to things that happened in the past. Option G has the phrase back in time which also refers to the past. erefore, these phrases show that the sentences link. RE SPM English-Unit 1.indd 50 13/04/2023 2:36 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
51 Reading and Use of English UNIT 1 SPM Practices Practice 1 Questions 1 to 6 are based on an article about why a student likes reading detective stories. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fi ts each gap (1 to 6). ere are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Why I Like Reading Detective Stories My favourite type of book to read is detective stories. A detective story is part of the crime and mystery genre. In a detective story, a detective or an investigator looks for clues, gathers evidence and puts the pieces together in order to solve a crime. e detective can be a professional like Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. 1 e investigator may be a lovable amateur sleuth like Miss Marple, a small-town elderly spinster, a character created by Agatha Christie or Veronica Mars, a schoolgirl whose father is a private detective, a character created by Rob omas. ere are many reasons people read detective stories. 2 Basically, a detective story has what seems like a perfect crime, wrongly-accused suspects, an intelligent detective and a series of unexpected sequence of events that ends with the detective revealing the identity of the culprit. Here in lies the reasons I like reading detective stories. 3 He or she is smart, observant and sometimes, witty. I like a character who can outplay an equally intelligent criminal. e criminal has to be clever enough to stay ahead of the detective, at least for a short time. It is entertaining as well as mentally stimulating to read about two interesting characters. Second, a detective story consists of a storyline where all the suspects of the crime are introduced in the beginning of the story. But as the story progresses, the detective proves their innocence. I can fi gure out how the crime was committed or who did it along with the detective. 4 ird, the writer of a good detective story presents, to the readers, all the clues that the detective discovers. e clues may not be made available directly but presented in the writer’s choice of words. I like reading between the lines to appreciate what the writer is really trying to say. 5 Finally, a detective story ends with a logical explanation. e detective explains how the crime happened, hence solves the case, in a way that makes sense. 6 It teaches me how to think critically by using evidence and clues, instead of letting preconceived ideas cloud my judgement. A I enjoy reading how things are solved in a logical manner. E First, the detective always possesses interesting qualities. B But the reasons are connected to the elements of a detective story. F He may be a retired policeman like Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. C I get to follow the investigation process closely. G I like the chance of being an armchair sleuth. D I get the chance to learn new words and expand my knowledge. H Sometimes, the detective has an odd habit. RE SPM English-Unit 1.indd 51 13/04/2023 2:36 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

You want to know which is better; a computer game or a console game. at is a great question! Both have their pros and cons, so let’s look at the main factors to help you make your choice. e fi rst point to consider is the cost of the games. 1 And the reason for this is that online game stores have to compete for your money so they will off er lower prices. Meanwhile, the console game universe is a closed platform. In addition, a game publisher often gives a big discount to older games while some give them away in order to create interest in newer versions of the games. Having said that, there is a wider range of games available on a computer than on a console. Besides the large number, some games are exclusive to computers. For example, ‘League of Legends’ and ‘World of Warcraft’ are games you will never be able to play on a console. 2 Another factor in favour of computer gaming is its hardware. 3 is translates to better graphics settings and smoother play than a console. But a gaming computer hardware doesn’t come cheap! For example, a gaming computer that off ers the same resolution output as a console game, costs double. Seasoned gamers I have spoken to say that playing using a keyboard and a mouse increases the speed, control and accuracy. 4 Playing computer games is cost eff ective too. In order to play a multi-player game on a console, you have to pay a yearly membership fee. e fee may be low but in the long run, you will be spending a lot of money. 5 On the other hand, it is easy to use a console and you can sit comfortably on a sofa to do it. 6 In addition, it is also set up for multi-player games so you can easily play with your friends. I hope these points will help ease your decision process. Yours sincerely, Tech Help A Computer gamers spend less because they don’t need to pay to play games online. E Computer games are cheaper than console games. B On the other hand, aiming is slower and inaccurate with a console joystick. F e most amount of money you will have to spend is on the hardware. C Likewise, there are games available only on consoles. G You don’t have to upgrade its hardware either. D Just head to an online store to get a variety of computer games. H e hardware of a gaming computer is far superior than a console. RE SPM English-Unit 1.indd 52 13/04/2023 2:36 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.

Childhood Games At a later stage in our growing up, there were three periods in the day, when we children would normally be released by our parents for play, or when we would be expected to be playing. e fi rst came during the morning and mid-day hours when we would play at a grazing ground. With a huge wide fi eld before us, we herd-boys would still make use of toys, especially bows and arrows and catapults. is was my favourite ‘game’. We would aim at a particular target … a bush, a tree, a rock, a bird … and attempt to hit it. Whoever hits the target at fi rst attempt would be exempted from some of the numerous duties that had to do with herding. is was the time when and the place where we also organised ‘bull-fi ghting’, using ‘bulls’ made out of clay, viyumba (banana ends) or luseso (a certain tough grass). In the fi elds too, we would play idiolo and ikhuya, which resemble the Western game of hockey except that maize cobs were used instead of balls. is was the time when, out of green branches, we would build madili, or temporary houses, and pretend we were sheltering, sleeping or even cooking in them. We would also practise ‘warring’ tactics, which sometimes included being forced by the group to remain in the rain as long as it lasted, to swim across the fairly fast-fl owing river Yala in order to escape from an attack by other youngsters, to climb a thorn tree or to run through a prickly bush. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fi ts each gap (27 to 32). ere are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Tips to Boost Your Self-Con dence Do you feel like you have no confi dence? Do you feel too shy to ask for the things you need? Are you too scared to try something new? Worry no more. Low self-confi dence can stop us from getting the most out of our opportunities. If your self-confi dence needs a bit of a boost, try out these three useful tips. Firstly, start small. If you are shy, it is highly unlikely that you are going to change overnight. 27 Set yourself a big goal and then break down the little steps you need to take to get there. For example, if you fi nd it diffi cult to meet new people, try reconnecting with old friends whom you have not seen in years. 28 You can slowly up your game till you can walk into a room where you know one or two people out of dozens. Secondly, write a victory diary. When you feel nervous about something, it becomes the focus of your attention. is means your failure to speak up at a meeting becomes somehow more important than the time when you actually did speak up. 29 is can be done by keeping a victory diary. It’s not boasting; it’s boosting. Finally, rope in a confi dent friend as a mentor. A little bit of encouragement goes a long way. 30 Your friend can act as your mentor until you feel confi dent to do things on your own. is person might even be someone from your class, workplace or a friend. e best mentors will guide you and help you grow by sharing their knowledge and wisdom with you. It is important to have self-confi dence especially when we are trying out something for the fi rst time. 31 We do not know how they actually feel behind their brave front. In future, remember to follow the three tips given. 32 However, keep persevering and after trying these tips a few times, you will see that your self-confi dence is improving. You might even end up mentoring someone else in the future. RE SPM English-Model Test.indd 234 13/04/2023 2:25 PM PENERBIT ILMU BAKTI SDN. BHD.
235 model TEST SPM A It might be diffi cult to follow them in the beginning. E en, meet one new person in a group of old friends. B You need to raise your awareness of all the positive events. F Being shy is a normal part of life. C Not everyone is brave and daring as we perceive them to be. G Small and steady is the way to go. D Ask someone whose confi dence you admire to give you a boost. H Many people have encountered this problem. Part 5 [8 marks] Questions 33 to 40 are based on the following texts.
