ere are two main species of gorilla, the Eastern Gorilla and the Western Gorilla. e Western Gorilla lives in
Western Africa while the Eastern Gorilla lives in Eastern Africa.
Gorillas live in di erent habitats from swamps to forests. e lowland gorillas live in bamboo forests, swamps
and lowland forests while the mountain gorillas live in the mountainous forests. Although they are mostly
herbivores, eating plants like leaves, stems, fruit, and bamboo, some also eat insects, especially ants. A full grown
adult male gorilla eats about 22 kg of food a day.
Gorillas are the largest primates. e males, measuring about 168 cm in height and weighing around 180
kg, are much larger than the females. Gorillas have long arms, which are longer than their legs! ey are mostly
covered with brown fur though their colours change according to the di erent areas they live in.
Sadly, gorillas are endangered. Many have died from disease and poachers who hunt them.
Gorillas live in small groups called troops or bands. Each troop has a dominant male Silverback, a few
female gorillas, and their young. ey sleep at night in nests. Baby gorillas stay in their mother’s nests until they
are around two and a half years old. ese highly intelligent animals are generally calm and passive creatures.

Two friends are talking about saving the environment. Fit the parts in the columns below into the
dialogue. LS 4.1.2, 4.1.5
It just means we have to change our old habits to new ones. We also have to change the way we commute.
We can do this by separating our trash and sending it to recycling centres. Electronic items like bulbs, batteries and
computers must not be mixed with other trash. ey have to be disposed of properly. If possible, start composting.
All vegetable and fruit waste can be put into compost. Remember, do not waste! Only buy what we really need.
We reuse our drinking bottles, use our own containers for takeaways and use our own reusable bags. We must say
NO to plastic where possible.
One of the best ways to help save the environment is to start conserving and reusing. We can start small by getting
our families and friends to change their habits.
We can drive less. We can walk, cycle, car pool and use public transport.
We have to try and use less electricity and water to conserve our natural resources. We can use less air conditioning,
switch o lights and fans when we leave the room, use energy saving LED bulbs, unplug devices which are not in
use, and so on.
