Another friend of mine, Emma, enjoys baking with her mother at the weekends. They make wonderful cupcakes and the most delicious pastries! In my class, we have a pair of twins, Daljit and Ranjit. They both have different interests. Daljit is great at swimming while Ranjit enjoys skateboarding. Page 2 This is Audrey’s classroom. The teacher’s desk is next to the whiteboard, and her teacher puts her bag on the desk. There is a laptop in the bag. On the left side of the classroom is a reading corner. There is a chair in the corner. Under the chair is a storybook left by Audrey’s friend. Opposite the reading corner is a shelf. There is a flower pot on top of the shelf. Audrey’s desk is between the reading corner and the shelf. Page 6 1 Chinese 2 Japanese 3 Italian 4 Korean 5 African 6 Malaysian 7 Spanish 8 Thai Unit 1 Towns and cities Page 11 Hi! My name is Eleanor. My father is from Los Angeles and my mother is from Minnesota. We are currently staying in San Francisco. I have lived in all three cities in my life. San Francisco is a modern city with great facilities, but I like Minnesota as it LISTENING SCRIPT is colder and quieter. Los Angeles is warmer and the people are friendlier. However, San Francisco is cleaner and more convenient. Honestly, I don’t think any city is better or worse than the other. They are just different, and that’s what makes them interesting! Unit 2 Days Page 17 A Hi, I am Ravi. I am in Year 5. This is my Sunday routine. I get up at 7.00 a.m. After having breakfast with my family, I put my stamp album in order. I arrange my stamp collection by state and country. Then, I practise the violin for an hour. I do not want my mother to nag me to practise. Later, I set the table for lunch. I place the plates and fill the glasses with warm water. After having a delicious meal of steamed fish and stir-fried vegetables, I watch television. In the evening, my brother and I play football with friends. After dinner, I read a storybook. I go to bed at 10.00 p.m. Page 18 In my country, we’re blessed to have celebrations all-year long. Malaysia is a multiracial and multicultural society. We begin the year with a vibrant Chinese New Year celebration, which falls either in the month of January or February. Then, we have the much-awaited Hari Raya Aidilfitri which is celebrated by the Muslims, after a whole month of steadfast fasting. Pesta Kaamatan, a traditional harvest festival is celebrated on a large scale in the state of Sabah, in the month of May. The months of August and September unite us all as we come as one to show our inherent patriotism to our country as we celebrate National Day on the 31st of August and Malaysia Day on the 16th of September. Then, it’s time for another colourful festival, one that’s celebrated by Hindus in October or November, annually. Kuasai PBD Eng Y5(Listening).indd 69 14/09/2023 12:48 PM

70 December brings the joy and cheer of Christmas, and after five days of merry-making, we welcome another year with hopes for more good tidings on the 1st of January. Unit 3 Wild life Page 24 A I feel ducks are amazing. They predominantly live on land, but love to take a dip or wade through cold waters. Their feathers are waterproof so water doesn’t touch their skin beneath. These warm-blooded birds lay eggs. The world’s largest tree-dwelling mammal is the orangutan. This warm-blooded, ape-like creature is covered with thick reddish, brown hair. Female orangutans give birth to their young and take care of them till their babies reach the age of six or seven, teaching them the necessary skills to survive. Widely found in Australia, the platypus is a unique warm-blooded mammal that lays eggs. It looks like a combination of several animals and can live both on land and in water. It has two layers of fur to ensure it stays warm and dry, at all times. There are over 3,000 snakes that have been slithering in this world for millions of years! These cold-blooded reptiles are very venomous and most can cause death instantly. The scales on its belly are thicker compared to other parts of its long body. This is to provide protection as it moves. The female snakes lay eggs in a nest and only a few, like the python, guard them. Most snakes live on land, with the exception of a few, that live in water. Do you know that the largest frog species is known as the Goliath Frog? Except Antarctica, where it’s freezing cold, frogs can be found croaking away in any part of the world. Their strong hind legs can make them leap 20 times higher than their height. They don’t have fur, feather or scales on their wet, slippery skin. These cold-blooded amphibians live both on land and in water, and the females lay thousands of eggs at any one time! Page 27 • I know this would sound illogical, but did you know that butterflies have their taste sensors on their feet? And they make soft clicking sounds when they’re disturbed by other animals. • The young of an elephant is called a calf, while the female is known as a cow and the male is called a bull. • Do you know that no two tigers have the same stripes? They are the only cat species that are completely striped on both their fur and skin. A tiger’s roar is as loud as a jet engine. • Chickens cluck as they move in a brood while ducks quack as they waddle in a paddling. • Spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks belong to the arachnid family. Their body is divided into two segments and they have eight legs. Spiders give out vibrations when they hit on a surrounding object. • Wolves are sometimes depicted as being cunning and sly. In the tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, a wolf tries to deceive and trap the poor girl. Wolves howl when they are interacting with their pack. Unit 4 Learning world Page 34 A 1 Do you like reading books in English? 2 Do you use the dictionary to look up a word? 3 Do you ever listen to songs in languages other than English? 4 Do you check your pronunciation before a presentation? Unit 5 Food and health Page 42 Fluffy Omelette 1 Crack two eggs into a bowl. 2 Add salt, pepper and two tablespoons of water. 3 Beat the mixture with a fork till it becomes fluffy. 4 Heat some butter in a non-stick pan over medium-high heat, until hot. 5 Pour in the egg mixture. 6 Gently push the cooked portions from the edges towards the centre and continue cooking till every part is cooked. 7 Then, place a filling of your choice on one side of the omelette. 8 Fold the omelette in half with a turner and flip it gently onto a serving plate. 9 Serve immediately. Unit 6 Sport Page 47 A 1 Cycling 2 Skateboarding 3 Football 4 Swimming 5 Badminton 6 Table tennis 7 Sepak takraw 8 Hockey B Cycling, swimming and skateboarding can be played individually. Badminton and table tennis require at least two players. Football, sepak takraw and hockey are played in a team. Page 50 A Bungee jumping is an extreme sport and definitely not for the faint-hearted or one who is afraid of heights. It involves individuals jumping from a tall structure, for example, a bridge, building or crane. However, bungee jumping can also be performed from a helicopter or a hot-air balloon. An elastic rope is tied to their ankles to stop them from hitting the ground. They also wear safety equipment such as a helmet and a harness. When one jumps, the elastic rope stretches all the way, and then bounces back up. The individual continues to swing up and down until the rope stops moving. Those who participate in this sport enjoy the thrill of free-falling and the rebound. Unit 7 Growing up Page 54 A 1 Hi. I’m Mag. I used to be skinny when I was growing up, but I’ve become a bit plump now. I’m not as tall as most of my peers. I have big, round eyes and silky, straight shoulderlength hair. 2 Hello, everybody! My name is Kasim and I’m a six-footer. Due to my height, I play basketball for the local basketball club. I’ve short, spiky hair and a moustache. 3 My name is Salman. I have dimples on my cheeks when I smile. When I was growing up, I was a chubby kid. Now, with lots of exercise and a proper diet, I’m healthy and muscular. 4 I’m Pak Mat and I’m 70 years old. My shoulders are slightly hunched, but otherwise I’m still strong and healthy. Kuasai PBD Eng Y5(Listening).indd 71 14/09/2023 12:48 PM
