It is called The Coal Miner and is written by Jeremy Hunt. The story is a mixture of mystery and adventure. The story is set in 16th Century London. The author describes the places and the people vividly. The story is about a very poor family. The father is a coal miner and the mother is a tailor. They work very hard every day to feed their five children. The oldest child is a sixteen-year-old girl called Betty. She is a cheerful girl and loves to look after her younger siblings. Every night, before she goes to bed, Betty would hear her parents speak in low voices. She heard them mentioning the name of Mr Kruger, the meanest man in their town. Betty was terrified. She thought that her parents were going to send her to Mr Kruger’s house to work there, like many other poor children. Betty ran away from home before her parents could send her away. She spent the night in Mr Kruger’s garden shed because she had planned to run away with her friend, Jenny, who was working there.
