August (Fr Neville’s Hammock Season) sees many of us taking
holidays or breaks to get some well-earned rest from the daily grind.
But what is the biblical relationship between rest and work? The Bible
shows us that we are to work from rest, not rest from work. How is
this working out in our current experience?

When God created human beings on the 6th day, the next full day
was a day of rest before the work began:‘Then God blessed the
seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the
work of creating that He had done.’ (Genesis 2:3). Sunday is a day of
rest at the beginning of the week.

Jesus lived out this rhythm of rest and work in His own ministry: ‘Very
early in the morning, Jesus got up and went off to a solitary place,
where He prayed’ He then told His disciples: ‘Let us go somewhere
else so that I can preach there also. That is why I have come.’ (Mark
1:35-38).

Here is a rhythm for our own lives: ‘I am the vine; you are the
branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit’
(John 15:5). Our work/fruitfulness arises out of the time we abide/rest
in Jesus. He will then show us what aspects of our lives need
pruning: ‘while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it
will be even more fruitful.’ (2).

Let’s use this month to reflect on how this pattern is working in our
lives:

Are we spending enough time ‘abiding’ in Jesus?

Are we putting our energies into the right balance of rest and work?

Are there unproductive areas of our lives and churches that need
pruning?

Remember God created us as human beings not just human doings!!

With many blessings

Fr David

GOD’S WORD IS SPREAD
We continue our series looking at how the Good News of Jesus was

spread by the small group of disciples.
“...I myself have carefully investigated everything from the

beginning…”
The Third Gospel and the Book of the Acts of the Apostles are
attributed to St Luke. St John captivated his readers with expressive
writing that is exciting and which made his work favourite with many
readers. St Luke’s writing holds an affectionate Spiritual love for
Jesus/God and to those whom he came into contact with, that has
made him a favourite with so many readers. Writing about Luke
brings us to the end of the First century, away from Judaism and
Jewish observances to the early formation of the Christian
Churches. Luke obtained his material from other writers, from eye-
witnesses and true followers alive during Jesus ministry on earth
and other followers. He held in respect the Jewish scriptures and
Hebrew texts from which he quotes in his works.
Who was Luke? As so often occurs with Spiritual leaders, little is
known of their personal life because God has ordained his leaders
to be known for their faith, their spiritual gifts offered as Christians
with the understanding of Jesus’ Messiahship, his earthly mission
and God’s Kingdom. Luke is known as the beloved Gentile
Physician, who wrote for mainly Gentile readers. He came from
Antioch, an important trading capital before and after the Romans
had made it a province. He was sometimes a friend and companion
to Paul and he befriended Paul when he was imprisoned for two
years in Caearea. He travelled to Rome and many other places
during his long life of 84 years to die in Boeotia.
Luke in his Gospel writes a clear introduction to his readers and to
Theophilas who was most likely a recently converted Gentile, who
held a position in authority. These verses at the start of his Gospel
desires that everyone, including Theophilas, should be aware of the
true spiritual facts of Jesus and understood. He, like his fellow
Christians knew only too well the opposition shown to Christianity at
this time and that some teaching was corrupt through lack of correct
understanding of the truth.

2

The quote is so very true of Luke’s detailed Gospel, after his
introduction the first four chapters are given over to Jesus’ birth,
his early childhood and preparation for his public ministry. The
Genealogy of Jesus in Chapter 3 places his emphasis on the
Virgin Mary and his respect and love for women. This chapter
comes after his details of Elizabeth, the wife of Zechariah a priest,
the elderly parents blessed of a son, John the Baptist, by the
Grace of God.
Next month we will take a brief look at what St Luke writes about
Jesus’ ministry and his last days.

UKRAINIAN SOLDIERS TREAT BIBLE LIKE ‘A LIFE-SAVER’

Since the war broke out more than six months ago, Bible Society
has been making the Bible available to soldiers as well as
civilians in Ukraine.

Recently, Serhii, the commander of a military unit, told Bible
Society colleagues in Ukraine how vital the Bible is to his troops.
He said, “It is very important for soldiers to have the Bible. Things
are very tough at times and many soldiers are praying to God.

“They may have never attended a church before. They may not
have believed in God before. But now they are turning to Him.
Many of them treat the Bible as a life-saver.

“I have a friend, an officer. He also received a Bible from our
chaplain. Sometimes he faces situations that seem to be
desperate. He turns to the Bible….and he says, ‘You wouldn’t
believe it. Every time I find an answer. The Bible has a way out! I
do as the Bible says and everything works well.”’

Serhii added, “So, for those people who are facing enormous
pressures on the frontlines, who experience hardship, both
physical and moral, when they have this Bible in their pocket,
when it gets very hard, a soldier can open it and find words that
he needs to hear at that very moment. It is very important. Thank
you!”

CHURCH WARDEN’S CHATTER

Thank you to all our volunteers and supporters! We just could not
function without you all. Be that at the Summer Fair (what a great
day), serving coffee after Mass on a Sunday, cleaning the church,
weeding at the church hall or helping at one of our clubs to name a
few … thank you all.
Our numbers grew during June as we welcomed our Swedish
friends as they visited Eastbourne in their preparations for their
confirmations in Sweden, as the same time as our one here at St.
Andrew’s.
St. Andrew’s have also been able to host the Diocesan leaver’s
service for children going onto secondary school (in our area), as
well hosting St. Andrew’s Infant’s Year 2 leaver’s service (as they
move onto Junior school in September). Such a special thing to be
able to be a small part of their journeys.
July also saw St. Andrew’s leading the chapel service at
Eastbourne Hospital. It was a pleasure to be able to be there to
support people over the air waves and we sung with all our heart to
make it a great service.
We were very thankful to Bishop Reade for stepping into Bishop
Will’s shoes to ensure the confirmation service could go ahead.
What a special service for all involved, but especially for all the
confirmation candidates. Thanks to our social team for
orchestrating the lunch after, a great function to share with
everyone .. it is something St. Andrew’s do so well!
Despite all this joy, we have sadly needed to deal with the police
this month too, due to theft from church … which was all captured
with clarity by our new CCTV! Meanwhile we are also busy getting
trades to quote for works needed to improve facilities in church

(new toilet) and also at the hall, as well as ensuring
annual check-ups are booked in.

FSW JULY 2022 UPDATE

Dear Friends,

With the summer holidays upon us there is a huge amount
happening at FSW. Although we are hugely pleased to be able to
hold our large group activities again and provide some amazing
experiences for our families, the underlying issues which are
concerning them are growing. Financial difficulties are prevalent,
with parents concerned about how to afford to feed their children
whilst schools are shut, and purchase new school uniform ready
for the new school year. Our practitioners are doing a marvellous
job helping families to access all sorts of local support and help to
ease their concerns as much as they can, but we are sure that this
is only the tip of the iceberg.

Our foodbank stocks are still low, but the response to our recent
appeals has been wonderful, so thank you to everybody who has
contributed. We are still in need of most items, particularly
ketchup, tinned tomatoes, multipack snacks and tinned meat. If
you could focus on these over the next period we would be very
grateful.

Our next central fundraising event will be the Amberley to Arundel
sponsored walk on Thursday 11 August. Registration is now open
either via our website or by completing and returning our
registration form. We would love to see as many people as
possible – there are 2 routes available, one of 2.6 miles and the
other of 8.7 miles, so something for everyone. Please get in touch
with Jo in the fundraising team for more information –
[email protected].

Finally, a reminder to put Saturday 1 October in your diaries for our
AGM at Chichester Cathedral. We would love to see as many
people there as possible and will be sending out more detailed
information nearer the time.

Thank you for your continued support of FSW’s work.

Eastbourne Tramway

In a recent article on Princes Park I included a picture of the trams
at Princes Park and I thought readers might like another trip down
memory lane with some more images and a bit of history about the
tramway.

Built by Claude Lane, who was an electrical and mechanical
engineer, the trams ran at various locations, including Rhyl in North
Wales and St. Leonards-on-Sea, before finding a more permanent
home in Eastbourne.

The tramway, with a gauge of 2 feet, was officially opened by the
Mayor of Eastbourne at Whitsun 1955. It ran from a terminus near
to where Buzz Active is now located past the Putting Course then
ran alongside the old Wartling Road where it terminated.

It was a major tourist attraction and as well as holidaymakers,
transport enthusiasts from the around the country used to visit.

All the trams were built by Claude Lane and his staff, and the
electricity for running them was generated on-site

Around 1964 efforts to extend the line both eastwards and
westwards were thwarted by the Chatsworth Estate and Eastbourne
Council so they eventually found a new home in 1966 and moved to
Seaton in Devon where they still operate a 3 mile long track! What
an opportunity missed by EBC!

It took 4½ years to get planning permission for the Seaton Tramway
but once approved Claude Lane and Allan Gardner undertook most
of the work themselves.

It took 36 trips with two lorries, mostly at night and it was obviously
exhausting work. It took its toll on Claude Lane as he sadly died of
heart attack in April 1971 aged 64.

Allan Gardner and Claude's nephew, Roger Lane, then completed
the move and creation of the Seaton Tramway.

DIVINE ILLUSTRATION….

A teacher was observing her
classroom of young children
while they drew. As she came to
one little girl who was working
diligently, she asked what the
drawing was. The girl replied,
“I’m drawing God.”

The teacher said gently, “But no
one knows what God looks like.”

Without missing a beat, the girl
replied with perfect composure:
“They will in a minute.”

MORE SILLINESS FOLKS...

Oh boy more nonsense.....

How do you cut an ocean in two? With a sea saw.

I’ve been a bee keeper for years, but then my girlfriend said, “It’s me or
those nasty insects .. make up your mind!” At first I didn’t think she was
serious, then I saw her face. Now I am a bee leaver.

Yesterday I washed the car with my son. He said, “Dad can’t you just
use a sponge?”

I once bought a wood car .. wooden engine, wooden doors, wooden
wheels, wooden seats. I put the wooden key in the wooden ignition. It
wooden start!

A German tourist jumped into a freezing river to save my dog. After he
climbed out he said, “Here is ze dog, dry him off and keep him warm,
and he will be fine.” I asked if he was a vet. He said I am soaking!

How did Mary and Joseph know that Jesus was 8lb 7oz when he was
born? They had a weigh in the manger.

There are a lot of cities in France, like Paris, Marseilles or Lyon. But
there is only one city that is Nice.

What do you call a magician who has lost their magic? Ian.

As I put my car into reverse I thought to myself …. Ah this takes me
back.

For the past three weeks I’ve been jogging a mile a day. Now I don’t
know where I am.

What did Spartacus say when the lion ate his wife? Nothing he was
gladiator.

You all feel that you were all once young and stupid, but I can assure
you that age has nothing to do with it.

I went to the motor show today. I was walking round for three hours,
and didn’t realise I was only in the car park.

First day at school teacher was asking me about my family and what
does your Daddy do, “He is a magician and he can saw people in half.”
The teacher thought this clever and asked if I had any brothers or
sisters. “Yes, one half brother and two half sisters.”

Dry July is going well so far. Last night I had a bottle of dry martini and
tonight I am having a nice bottle of dry sauvignon.

Have Fun!

REMEMBERING ENID BLYTON
It was 125 years ago, on 11th August 1897, that Enid Blyton was
born in East Dulwich, South London. This enormously popular
British children’s writer created Noddy, the Famous Five, and the
Secret Seven. She is among the world’s bestselling writers, selling
more than 600 million copies of her books.
Enid was the daughter of a nature-loving clothing wholesaler, to
whom she was very close. He once sat up with her when she was
expected to die of whooping cough, determined that she would
survive. Her mother was less solicitous. Enid was bright, popular
at school and a talented musician, but decided against it as a
profession, going into teaching instead.
She married twice – first Hugh Pollock, an editor at a publishing
firm who helped her to become established as a writer. They
moved to Buckinghamshire and had two daughters, but then
divorced in 1942. The following year she married surgeon
Kenneth Waters, and they moved in the 1950s to Manor Farm in
Dorset, which inspired much of her later work.
Blyton’s mystery and adventure stories have clearly defined good
and bad characters and are easy to read. They have been
criticised for being too simplistic, and more recently for some of
the now outdated social attitudes and language. But they remain
popular worldwide for their sense of joy and wonder at life.
Several of her books are based on biblical stories, but she had a
general rather than personal belief in God. She was brought up as
a Baptist, and her children were baptised in the Church of
England: towards the end of her life she became interested in
Roman Catholicism. She put much energy into charity work,
encouraging children to do the same. She died in 1968.

MUMA NURTURE
Our Ladies that
Brunch group have
chosen to support
Muma Nurture, a
charity in the parish
who do fantastic work.
Sarah has recently
presented them with a cheque for their
work. Here is more on them.
Muma Nurture is an Eastbourne based charity providing support
for those affected by infertility, pregnancy, and perinatal death,
whether current or historic, personal or indirect through specialist
counselling, holistic therapies, groups and community activities.
Muma Nurture supports the full range of experiences involved in
becoming or trying to become a parent from trying or struggling
to conceive and fertility treatments to pregnancy, emotional
wellbeing and mental health struggles during pregnancy,
miscarriage, termination, still birth, birth trauma and postnatal
depression.
We conservatively estimate that 55% of people on the “path to
parenthood” are affected by the issues we support and yet often
these struggles are unspoken, shameful and secretive.
Muma Nurture provides the opportunity to belong to a
community where you can feel normal and belong. Everybody at
Muma Nurture has personal experience of the issues we
support, and we know that whatever our experience and feelings
about it, both that and we are perfectly normal and so are you!
One of our biggest struggles is making sure people know we are
here and can find us at their time of need. We try and get
everybody in for a consultation within a week and additional
services as soon as possible after that. There is no major wait
list or delay. All services have a cost, and we ask if possible that
you donate towards that. If you can’t you are still very welcome
to therapy and support from us. If you are able to cover the full
cost, this helps us continue to support others.

18

Our primary service is specialist counselling and we provide this
online or in person in our new Eastbourne office at Unit 4 Beverley
Business Park, 6 Finmere Road, Eastbourne, BN22 8QG.
We also have a specialist fertility and maternity Reflexologist, as
well as an array of groups and community events. Further
information about these and join our online community on our new
website at www.mumanurture.org

I REMEMBER ….
I must tell you this before we go any further. Several years ago
(over 30 now), I was friendly with the chap who made all the beans
adverts on television.
He lived in a great big house in Seaford, and when I was at his
house I explained I was looking to buy a van. He suggested I took
his Rolly Royce to go hunting in Brighton for my van! Great I had
never driven one before and all of a sudden I was Jack the Lad in a
top of the range Rolls Royce!! And yes I did find one in Brighton,
and they delivered free of charge.
Anyway, the real part of this story is the fact that when I was over
there one day Sid James was there too. He gave me some advice
which has never left me, and I am going to share it with you. It has
been the best tip I have encountered.
He asked me if I liked strawberries… I said yes of course, and then
he said in his Sid’s tone of voice, “What you have to do is soak the
strawberries in a good sherry like Harvey’s Bristol Cream and put
them in the fridge overnight. Perfect the next day, you won’t be
sorry.”
The chap who did the Heinz beans adverts with to Australia and the
house is now a nursing home.
Try it, you will love it…well done Sid.

AUSTRALIA,ANIMALS & ME

Last month I told you about some of the animals that I had
encountered whilst visiting my daughter in Australia. This month I
share the details of a few more.
Dolphins are very special and I have had three encounters, one
being in the Bahamas- On one visit we went to Morton Island where
a wild pod comes in to the shore every evening to be fed. The
scientists there allow us to feed them after sanitizing our hands. We
were given fish to give them but as they do not have necks so
cannot raise their heads you have to wade out into the shallows and
hold the fish under the water for them. I was lucky to have two come
to me. On my third encounter I did a helmet dive on the Gold Coast.
There was three of us, me and two young ladies. We were kitted out
in wet suits, then had to walk to the lake ( a sight for all the visitors
as I don't look good in a wet suit). When there a large ‘Bell Jar’ was
fitted over our heads and weights put around our waists. We went
slowly down and sat on the bottom, but I kept floating upwards so
the divers with us put more weights on my shoulders, very
embarrassing. A beautiful dolphin came to visit and check us out,
swimming around us and allowing us to touch him, it was truly
wonderful to look into his eyes through the helmet.
Another time at a flying display of owls and falcons I was able to
hold a white sea eagle on my arm, stunning but very heavy. I had to
wedge my elbow into my waist to take the weight. The otters I met
were so cheeky, crawling all over me as I sat in their enclosure, so
very soft to touch and eager for a feed of fish. I was also lucky
enough to feed and play with some very inquisitive lemurs at the
zoo. Hands sanitised before meeting them.
One year my daughter had unexpectedly got to work in Cairns so
her firm paid for me to go with her. While there we snorkelled on the
Reef and had a trip in a glass bottom boat, seeing turtles and
multi—coloured fish. While there I took a trip on the Daintree River
seeing crocodiles in the wild.’
When I went on a whale watching trip the lady captain of the boat
asked us to lean over the side and swing our arms side to side as

23

though we were waving. To our amazement the humpback
surfaced and “waved” back with its fin. She had a calf with her so
that made it very special.
I am lucky enough to have photos of my animal adventures to
remind me of them all. I will go to a lot of trouble to see and meet
animals and I know that this can be seen as exploitation but I am
careful to go with visits where the money goes to research,
conservation and protection and of course no cruelty is involved.
Generally the care for animals in Australia is impressive.
Unfortunately my last visit was in 2017 and I am not sure if I will get
there again. But I have many happy memories of my visits and
exploits though I have only seen a tiny part of that lovely country.

Lastly Epiphany at Brisbane Cathedral was a strange experience in
33 degrees heat, the choir singing beautifully near the open side
door in flip flops and shorts, no robes!
I miss my visits and my daughter but treasure my pictures and
memories very much.

Sussex Historic Churches – Ride and Stride 2022

This year the above event takes place on Saturday September
10th, and as many of you know, half the money raised through
sponsorship is returned to St. Andrew’s.
Last year, after lockdown, we did really well thanks to the Halliwell
and Stanley families and Father David. The recorders, in church,
were also able to welcome twenty one cyclists and one walker
visiting our church.
It is a lovely way to visit our local churches and those country-
wide. Sponsorship forms are available from me. Please support in
whichever way you can.

ST ANDREW’S FLOWER CLUB

At this afternoon’s meeting, sadly we
only had 14 members … but still we all
had an enjoyable afternoon.
The theme this month was ‘Saving the
Planet’, by not using floral foam as this
doesn’t biodegrade. We used chicken
wire and sellotape grids to place the
stems through to support the
arrangement.
Next month our afternoon will be an
arrangement suitable for a picnic table. After making our designs
the club will serve an afternoon tea to everyone. Visitors will be
most welcome, but we do need numbers of who will be attending.

Thank you and look forward to seeing you.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR HOUSE COOL IN A HEATWAVE
When the sun is sizzling overhead, many of us fling wide our
windows and even doors, in an effort to get a draught of air through
our homes.
But an NHS sleep consultant advises that, instead, people should
keep their windows shut and their curtains drawn all day. “It’s all
due to temperature differentials. As the sun comes up throughout
the day it heats the inside of your house.
“If you keep your windows and curtains closed until dusk, however,
your house will feel very cool when you go to bed. As the sun sets,
open your curtains and windows and you’ll feel a lovely breeze
coming through your house, which will help you sleep.”

PUZZLE PAGE AUGUST
John the Baptist

This month, on the 29th, we remember John the Baptist. By all ac-
counts, he had a rough life. He grew up in obscurity, lived in the
desert on a diet of bugs. He wore itchy camel hair. He worked in
the heat of the sun, constantly challenging people, and wading in
and out of muddy Jordan waters to baptise many. Then he was
arrested and kept in a reeking, infested dungeon until one day they
cut his head off. Not much comfort in that life. Yet the Bible tells us
that of all the people in history, no one has even been born who
was as great as him. Why? Because of the unique calling God
gave him, which was to prepare the way for the coming ministry of
his Son, Jesus. Jesus did not have an easy life, either.
