GETTING AROUND 4 9
Conversational tip In Spanish there are two ways of saying
“am,” “is,” or “are.” You have already learned the verb “ser” (p.14): “soy
inglés” (I am English); “es vegetariano” (he is vegetarian). When talking
about where something is, you need to use a different verb: “estar.” The
most important forms of this verb are: “estoy” (I am), “está” (he/she/it
is), and “están” (they are): “¿Dónde están lla iglesia?” (Where is the
church?); “El café no está lejos.” (The café isn’t far.)

Cultural tip You almost never see a Spanish home
without shutters at every window. These are closed at
night and often during the heat of the day in summer.
Curtains, where they exist at all, tend to be more for
decoration. Carpets are not popular in Spanish homes;
ceramic tiles or parquet floors with rugs are a more
common flooring solution.
