October History Spotlights...

Sir Christopher Wren

(October 20, 1642 – February 25th 1723)

Wren was born at East Knoyle in Wiltshire, the only surviving son of
Christopher Wren, at that time the rector of East Knoyle and later Dean of
Windsor. A previous child of Dr. Wren, also named Christopher, was born on
22 November 1631, but sadly died the same day. Physically Christopher was
a rather frail child who was quite small in stature. He loved drawing from
a young age and this developed as he grew older. Science fascinated him, he
showed a natural curiosity in everything around him and loved to conduct
little experiments which he devised himself.
Christopher had a private tutor during his early years, then when he was
nine years old he was sent to Westminster School in London, and in time went on to Wad ham College,
Oxford. At Wadham, Wren carried out many scientific experiments. He worked on anatomy, making
drawings of the human brain for Willis’s Cerebri anatome. He devised a blood transfusion method which
he demonstrated by transfusing blood from one dog to another. Wren’s time spent in Oxford covered a wide
range of interests. His mind leapt from one topic to another as he came up with ideas such as an instrument
to measure angles, instruments for surveying, machines to lift water, ways to find longitude and distance at
sea, military devices for defending cities, and means for fortifying ports.
Wren became closely associated with John Wilkins, who served as warden in Wadham. Wilkins was a
member of a group of distinguished scholars. This group, whose activities led to the formation of Royal
Society, consisted of a number of distinguished mathematicians, original and sometimes brilliant practical
workers and experimental philosophers. This connection probably influenced Wren’s studies of science and
mathematics at college. He graduated B.A. in 1651, and three years later received M.A.
Without doubt Wren is most famous for St. Paul’s Cathedral, and he was already working on plans to
renovate the old cathedral when it was destroyed during the great fire of London. The full rebuilding took a
little over 35 years being finally completed in 1711, during which time the
design underwent several changes, and looks considerably different than
Wren’s first draft.
It should not be forgotten however that Wren accomplished a great deal
more, having designed 53 London churches as well as work on numerous
other buildings including Whitehall, where the new king, James II, required
a new chapel and also ordered a new gallery, council chamber and a
riverside apartment for the Queen. Later, when James II was removed from
the throne, Wren took on architectural projects such as Kensington Palace,
Hampton Court and Greenwich Hospital.
Wren died on 25 February 1723 and was buried in St. Paul’s beside his
daughter Jane, his sister Susan Holder, and her husband William. A simple
inscription in Latin reads :
“Underneath lies buried Christopher Wren, the builder of this church and
city; who lived beyond the age of ninety years, not for himself, but for the
public good.--Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you”

Cruising Ahead Safely...
By Mags Addison
*Everything up to date at the time of writing, but please be aware it is a fluid situation.

As an agent who has been front line and dealing
with the Coronavirus situation from the start, I
personally think the cruise industry’s response to this
continuing pandemic has been helpful, and pro-active
throughout. And this has been not only to the trade
in general, but also the passengers.
Out of all the sectors in travel, and despite the
continuous changes in regulations that are still
ongoing – to me they have been upfront and fair. The cruise industry has been heavily hit – and yet when
cruises were cancelled, deployed elsewhere, or moved from one year to the next – and beyond, they have
consistently offered a flexible policy of changes, extra bonus credits for the passenger, or the immediate
offer of a refund. Life as an agent has become more complicated due to the number of times individual
bookings have now been moved and changed – and any help we had received from within the industry has
been gratefully received. And to think we thought last year was stressful!
I’ve been delighted at the popularity and success of all these cruise lines who have offered UK sailings
this summer – the Sea-cation as it’s been dubbed. It has enabled the cruise industry to get back to sea
again, as they recognized a niche in the market and pioneered it safely. They have adopted, deployed
and swapped ships, and itineraries and showed that no matter which cruise line – they could sail around
our waters as seamlessly as they do further afield in places like the Far East, Australia, or the Caribbean.
So, it’s been good to have in the short term the likes of Cunard, Princess Cruises and Disney Cruises – and
others who normally would be offering more far flung offerings, a chance for us Brits to sample these
affordable and safe opportunities.
The UK stay-cation of course has been an enormous success – due to the complexity and changeable
regulations of travelling abroad. As I write these regulations are to be simplified – but cruise lines have
already been offering passengers the chance to go back on board and stay within UK regulations. And
these are no make do voyages – all the stops have been pulled out both in terms of safety, but also
facilities and entertainment. Seasoned cruisers are customers who know what they like, and would expect
nothing less, wherever the ship is sailing.
All my customers who have booked and taken a UK cruise this summer, have loved them. Not only have
they taken a much missed and needed holiday, but it’s been a cruise with services they expect. They’ve
said how swift the boarding and disembarkation process has been, despite the increased regulations.
They’ve not minded wearing face masks when required, nor the pre-port Covid Tests and social distancing.
They’ve adapted to new procedures on board, and appreciated the enhanced cleaning, sanitizing and
rules. As one of my regular clients said to me – It made us feel safe.
Everyone is keen to book again soon and hoping next time to travel further. Who knows cruising may
attract a while new market of clients in the future?

Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...

Steve via email asks:
Hi Aunty, I have had a Hotmail address for over 20 years and recently it seems to be
called Outlook?? Now I seem to be getting a lot more dodgy looking emails which get
sent to my junk box that are obvious scams and pretending to be from banks. Recently
I had one supposedly from The HMRC offering me a tax rebate but the spelling was
so awful that it was obviously suspicious. I always mark them as spam and then they
automatically disappear from my inbox but recently I’m getting concerned that these
scammers seem to have more and more of my private personal information so what
happens to the emails? Does my email or Internet provider report them? because as
they automatically go into my junk inbox I can’t see any way of forward them to the
banks etc to alert them as to what is going on.
Aunty Says:
Hello Steve. I’m not sure how Microsoft & Hotmail currently deal with their customers’
spam problems, but I’m sure there is a setting somewhere that will help you flag and
report any particularly nasty emails as spam. In Gmail there is a “report spam”
option that will alert Google and hopefully they follow it up and do something about
it. Policing this kind of thing is a nightmare but there’s now plenty of cases in the news
where companies are getting heavily fined for spamming and abusing people’s private
and personal information, but outside of the UK, EU and USA nobody seems to care
that much
Martin from Bournemouth asks:
Hello Aunty, 3 months ago I treated myself to a new laptop and recently I am receiving
notification that the trial version of my McAfee Livesafe program has expired. I don’t
remember signing up for a free trial and I don’t know if I should pay, if it is safe to do
this over the internet or just ignore it. What do you recommend? I am fairly new to
computers so please explain in basic language
Aunty Says:
Hello Martin. The free trial from MacAfee was probably pre-installed on your laptop.
I’m a big fan of the free Window Security app that comes pre-bundled with Windows 10,
and to be extra safe I strongly recommend having a separate antispyware app like the
free Malwarebytes. Uninstall everything to do with McAfee by clicking on the Windows
icon (bottom left) and choose “Settings” “Apps”.

If you have any computer related problems then email me at
[email protected] and I will see what I can do.

I know I’m getting old... the other day I walked past a cemetery and two guys
attacked me with shovels.

Covid 19 and our continuing commitment to you.

Properties are in high demand and often don’t even reach the websites, so if
you have something in mind, contact us to register your details and we will
let you know if we have something which might suit your requirements.
We have an extensive list of clients on the lookout for certain types of
properties so if you are thinking of selling call us for a free valuation and we
may have just the buyer in mind you are hoping for.

It is still very important to contain the spread of this virus and we wish to
reassure you that we will continue to take all necessary precautions when
conducting viewings, valuations and instructions to minimise any risk to
vendors and prospective purchasers alike and yes.. ourselves.

Bearing this in mind please note that will only arrange, or consent to,
viewings of properties, whether they be occupied or vacant, if you are in a
strong position to proceed with a purchase. In other words, a first time buyer
with a mortgage agreed, cash buyer or that you have accepted an offer on the
sale of your own property.

Before requesting to view any of our properties please take time to look at the
full details available on the websites, make good use of the internet to look at
the location, use Google earth to get an overhead view and the street view to
get a proper understanding of where and what it is you are actually enquiring
about. This does sound obvious but you wouldn’t believe the number of times
we meet someone at a property only to be told “We didn’t realise it was here!”

Whatever the circumstances we will continue to maintain a commitment to
all our clients, current and new, to provide the best support and advice to
make the sale or purchase of your property as trouble free as we can.

Charity Number 1166158
Bournemouth Lifeguard Corps have been voluntarily training young people since 1965 in the skills
needed to patrol our beaches, making them safer for all. In more recent times the RNLI have evolved
to take on this enormous task nationally and as a result clubs like ours are looked upon as a quality
source of pre-trained individuals who may then be employed by the RNLI, providing Lifeguards, with
local knowledge and experience.
We have over 100 members from Rookies aged 8yrs-12yrs, Cadets 13yrs-18yrs and adults and have
regularly assisted with providing lifeguard cover for major events such as the British Heart
Foundation Pier to Pier swim, the Bournemouth Air Festival, Bournemouth Marathon and Bay Run.
We also provide lifeguard cover to youth groups from the local community who come to enjoy the
beach and also weekly at Aquability (a local swimming club for people of all ages with a wide range
of disabilities).
We have had a beach headquarters at Durley Chine for over 30 years and due to redevelopment of the
seafront we have had meetings with Council officials who have granted us the use of a building at
Joseph Steps, on the understanding that we develop the site. We are proposing that this new
development will be recognised as a training centre for lifeguards and water safety education with the
ability to host national and international competitions in lifesaving and triathlons etc. We already have
a triathalon club and an open water swim club who train people ready for swimming the channel,
using some of our facilities
The location is ideal for the Corps and if our vision can be achieved, we will become a year-round
hub of activity providing a chance for local young people and adults to learn water safety and life
skills and potentially secure employment as well.
Planning permission has now been granted for this new development and whilst we have been
fundraising (and saving) for some years now we are looking for donations to assist us in undertaking
this project.
If you would like further details of our planning application drawings please contact me and I can
email them to you.
I look forward to you hopefully supporting us with our fundraising. If you would like any further
information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Many thanks

ankle and lower leg conditions, and there is no
difference between a chiropodist or a podiatrist.
Chiropody is the old term for treatment by a
foot health professional but the term podiatry is
becoming increasingly used as it is
a common term, used all over the world,
for treatment by a foot health professional.

The team at AH Parfitt Chiropodry are registered
with the Health Care Professions Council and are members of the Society
of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, with extended scope of practice for ‘Foot
Mobilisation’ and local anaesthetic to carry out nail surgery.

There are many ailments and conditions that can be successfully treated by a
qualified chiropodist, these include: Aching and/or tired feet, Musckuloskeletal
problems, Biomechanical abnormalities of the foot and ankle, Flat feet and
fallen arches, Skin conditions, Corns and Callus, Verrucae and warts, Fungal
infections of the skin and nails, Diabetic foot health, Sports Injuries and
Paediatric (children’s) feet.

Common Problems

Athletes Foot - Verrucaes - Heel Pain - Corns and Calluses - Bunions
Ingowing Toenails - Plantar Fasciitis - Diabetic Foot Conditions
Hammer Toes - Fungal Nail Infections - Arthritis in the Feet

People with diabetes may be at risk of developing foot
problems. Therefore it is beneficial to be screened, at least
annually, to detect the presence of neuropathy, ischaemia
and/or foot deformities.

Opening times:
Monday - Wednesday 9am - 4.30pm, Thursday 9am - 5pm,

Friday 9am - 2.30pm, Saturday 9am - 1pm

Once he knows you, he loves one to one time and is very affectionate.
Buddy has a very strong prey drive and he will chase anything that
moves quickly so would be sensible to rehome where there are no small furry animals. He can
walk very well on the lead but can be distracted and he needs work to curb his excitement.

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg, especially when it’s yours!

Hopefully you have had an abundant crop of produce, fruit and flowers this growing season.
Enjoy your successes and either learn or ignore any disappointments. It is time to get ready
for next year and here are some jobs to be getting along with during October.
1. Clear up fallen leaves around the base of plants regularly.
2. Cut back perennials that have died down.
3. Cut fruited Raspberry canes to ground level.
4. Divide herbaceous perennials and Rhubarb crowns.
5. Lift Gladioli corms and Dahlia tubers for winter storage in
a dry, dark, airy place.
6. Clean the glass and disinfect the greenhouse, ‘Jeyes’ Fluid is
excellent for this job. You might want to use a smoke bomb to
eradicate pests.
7. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into a greenhouse or conservatory.
8. Plant your Garlic in soil that has been treated with well-rotted compost.
9. Plant out spring cabbages for next year, sow late Radishes and Lettuce for a quick crop
this year.
10. Sow Sweet Peas.
11. Harvest Apples, Pears, Grapes and any remaining Walnuts if you are lucky to have
them.
12. Dead head climbing Roses and prune flowered stems by 1/3 and no more than ½ to
encourage new growth.
13. Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges before the ground becomes too wet.
14. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf.
15. Order seeds for next year.

If you like gardening and are interested in joining a friendly group of Gardeners &
Allotmenteers? Come to North Bournemouth Allotment Society in Cornelia Road, Wallisdown
