In a trolley I took after an elderly lady had just finished with it, I found her

Contact The Elderly - Volunteer Drivers & Afternoon Hosts Required

Once a month on a Sunday afternoon local elderly people, who are without family in the area, are taken out
by volunteer car drivers for a little ride before going to the homes of volunteer hosts and hostesses for Sunday
afternoon tea.
We only ask our volunteer hosts to entertain up to six elderly people and two
drivers or one driver with up to three elderly people once or twice a year.
A downstairs cloakroom is a must.
Reserve drivers are always wanted when the regulars are unavailable.
This would be possibly two or three times a year.

Elderly people who would like to take part in one of these afternoons are
welcome to join the group but must be able to get in and out of a car, as we are
unable to take zimmers or wheelchairs. There is no charge.

12 Travel Feature -

Eurostar to Europe... By Mags Addison

Have you ever tried travelling on the Eurostar? I’ve been on this high speed
train service a couple of times through the Channel Tunnel to Paris and loved
it – and it’s such an easy mode of transport. To me, it’s an alternative and
pleasurable way to travel to some of our nearest European cities, especially
as you can catch it direct from St Pancras Station which is in central London.
Cities like Paris, Lille, and Brussels are perfect for this more relaxed, but
extremely efficient mode of travel. It’s comfortable, you can move around
and the journey time is only around 2.15 hours to Paris, and under 2 hours to
Brussels.
So not surprisingly it can be quicker than flying! Rail is booming in a lot of countries where people are
fed up with airports, delays, security, and crowded departure lounges. Not to mention being stuck at a
carousel waiting for your luggage to arrive.
With the ever growing choice of flights these days, we have become used to fleeing between countries by
air. Weekend and short city breaks are hugely popular – and the trend now is for taking several of these
short breaks away during the year rather than one long holiday. So you might say the age of flying is
convenient and well established – but it has now become costly, and time consuming.
The Eurostar is an option which not only can be quicker and more comfortable – it’s also quite economical
compared to the spiraling costs of those airfares. The secret here is to book Eurostar early, when the seats
go on sale, anything from 3-4 months prior to your journey. The ticket to Brussels also includes onwards
journeys to places in Belguim like Bruges, the Venice of the north, and a beautiful city to visit. To Lille and
Paris, you can change to the fast TGV, the French high speed train that travels down to Provence, and the
Mediterranean South. This is still on my list of `to Do’s’ in life. And once in Europe you can connect to other
rail networks that spread far and wide.
How does it save you precious time compared to flying? One reason is because the Eurostar travels from
city centre to city centre, rather than to an airport on the outskirts of a big city. All of which is important
when you are away for only a few short days – when you arrive, you are there! You don’t have to waste
another couple of hours getting into the city you want to be in. In Paris you arrive at the central Gare Du
Nord, not miles out of the city, in Brussels it’s at the main Brussels Midi. Crowded airport buses could be a
thing of the past!
Business people have long been in the know with this mode of
transport, with the increased use of Wi-Fi and power points on
trains, it’s more productive also – and you’re not squashed in to a
cramped economy seat on a plane. It’s all very civilized.
But it’s also a throwback to the more romantic way of travelling
to Europe, in the days when you hopped on a train, and arrived
somewhere exciting … try it. You may really enjoy it for a change.

Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...

Good Communication, Patience and Trust Can Reduce
Mountains To Molehills !

I recently treated a very nervous patient with severe phobia of injections. Although happy to
have dental examinations and treatment that did not need local anaesthetic they refused any
type of injection. Numerous hospital visits when younger had unfortunately overwhelmed my
patient with needle anxiety.
Dental treatment options were obviously restricted and therefore teeth that could be saved
were potentially having to be extracted under general anaesthetic instead, clearly not ideal !
However this bright person with a very supportive family decided not to bury their head in the
sand and to try and overcome the problem instead.

We had open and frank discussions about their phobia including details of their concern and we
set about finding a solution.
We used simple relaxation and distraction techniques together with numbing gel and
desensitisation procedures with the goal of being able to administer a local anaesthetic.
After a few visits, including various mock injection appointments, we succeeded and I am now
able to provide the normal range of dental treatments.
My patient has overcome a significant barrier and has put themselves in a much better position
for life as a result.

A soprano died and went to Heaven. St. Peter stopped her at the gate
asking, “Well, how many false notes did you sing in your life?”
The soprano answers, “Three.”

“Three times, fellows!” says Pete, and along comes an angel and sticks the
soprano three times with a needle.

“Ow! What was that for?” asks the soprano.
St. Peter explains, “Here in heaven, we stick you once for each false note

you’ve sung down on Earth, and thats the extent of your suffering.”
“Oh,” says the soprano, and is just about to step through the gates when she
suddenly hears a horrible screaming from behind a door. “Oh my goodness,

what is that?” asks the soprano, horrified.
“Oh,” says St. Peter, “That’s an amateur tenor we got some time back.
He’s just about to start his third week in the sewing machine room.”

Are you comfortable with your agent? NO? Choose again.

YES? Let them get on with the job.
2/ Beware High Valuations: Overvaluation is buying your business, ask for
recent comparable evidence. Ultimately you will need to reduce your price, a negative
that buyers do notice. “What is wrong with it”? they will be asking themselves.
3/ Beware Very Low Fees: Low fees need a high turnover of sales - pushing for sales
at any price. Cheap agents, cheap service, others may be “Virtual” The fact is many
buyers prefer to deal face to face with a real Human Being.
4/ Poor negotiators can cost you a fortune: Most houses don’t need a salesman, you
need a negotiator, a skill that can substantially improve your position. Use an agent
you feel has the right attributes, can negotiate well and knows their product.
5/ The multi agency trap: Don’t mistake for multi-listing. With multi-agency, one of
two things will happen, be persuaded with the first buyer (not the best buyer) - winning
the sale, or your agent may not try too hard, they may lose the race so may not start it.
Either way it is not good for you.
6/ No “For Sale” Signs: FOR SALE boards are 24 hour sales tools.
Buyers will drive the area they want to live in, keen to find they will make a fast
decision. If they see a property they like they will follow it up.
7/ Dismissing early Buyers : The best buyers often strike early with best prices,
perhaps been waiting to secure a home like yours. The longer on the market, the less
buyers will be attracted. Genuine buyers make the first move.
8/ Ignoring Agent Feedback: This can identify problem areas that can effect a
sale, you need honest feedback. After a period of time if they say it’s too expensive it
probably is.
9/ Keep It Clean: Dull Homes get dull prices. First Impressions count, inside and out.
Make your home sparkle and your price will shine.
10/ Experience Counts : Rarely do we get asked of our knowledge of the area the
facilities available how long have we been valuing in the area, experience of staff
and so on. You are paying for our expertise and experience, you need to make
sure we have some.

contact the office on the number below.

We also currently have lots of rabbits and guinea pigs

We have our annual Dog Show on the 24th June at West Parley Memorial Hall.

Brain Power

1: Six girls, Beth, Donna, Katy, Liza, Sharon, and Maya, are sharing a room on
a school trip, sleeping in bunk beds. The beds are in a row, and each girl has a
different colour blanket: Red, Black, Yellow, Brown, Blue, and Green.
Clues:
1. Sharon and Donna’s bed is closest to the door.
2. The colour of the blankets on the bottom bunks all begin with the same letter.
3. The colour of Beth’s blanket does not begin with the same letter as the beginning
of her name.
4. Sharon’s blanket colour does begin with the same letter as her name.
5. The blue blanket is under the red blanket.
6. Liza and Katy like their lower bunks.
7. Katy is in the middle bed.
8. Maya does not share a bunk with Katy.
9. The brown blanket is at the end of a row.
10. The yellow blanket is above the black blanket.
Can you determine the colour of each girl’s blanket, the order of their beds, and
who their bunkmate is?

2: Mr. Grist needs snacks for all the students going on a school trip. He bought
9 boxes of energy bars containing a total of 88 bars. He wanted variety, so
he purchased 3 different flavours, which happened to come from 3 different
companies. The almond chunky energy bars were packaged 8 to a box, the chewy
chocolate chip bars came 10 to a box, and the special nut & raisin package
contained 12 per box. He bought the most boxes of almond chunky, but had the
most nut & raisin bars. How many boxes of each flavour did he buy?

3: Which chess piece belongs in this group, and why? Answers on page 44
Elephant, Fool, Legionnaire, Messenger, Officer

Alex had a terrible day fishing on the lake, sitting in the blazing sun
all day without catching a single one. On his way home, he stopped at
the village fishmongers and asked for two rainbow trout. He told the
fishmonger, ‘Pick a couple of large ones out and throw them to me, will
you?’ ‘Why do you want me to throw them at you?’ Asked the fishmonger?’
So that, when I get home, I am able to tell my wife, in all honesty, that I
caught them.’ said Alex. ‘Okay, but I suggest that you take the salmon.’
Why’s that? ‘Because your wife came in earlier today and said that if you
came by, I should tell you to take salmon. That’s what she’d like for supper

tonight’, replied the fishmonger with a grin.
-------------------------

‘Do you really believe your husband when he tells you he goes fishing every
weekend?’ Asks Vicky’s best friend, Myra.
‘Why shouldn’t I, Myra?’ responds Vicky.

‘Well, maybe he is having an affair?’ comments Myra.
‘No way,’ laughs Vicky, ‘If he was to come home with some fish every time I

might suspect something, but he never comes home with anything.’

Mount Pleasant Townswomens Afternoon Guild

We meet in the Bradpole Road Community Centre at 2pm on the 1st Wednesday of every
month for a social afternoon, when we have different activities including a speaker, and

we welcome visitors who we hope may join us and become members of TG.

Our other activities include Trampers & Eaters (when we visit nearby places of interest
and end up with lunch), skittles, a music afternoon (all sorts) and a Social Studies
afternoon when we reminisce and discuss any current subjects of interest.

Gary is in a queue at the supermarket when he notices that the
rather attractive woman at the next checkout has just raised her
hand and is giving him a big ‘hello’. He is rather taken aback that such
a looker would be waving to him, and although her face is vaguely
familiar, Gary can’t place where he might know her from, so he says,
‘Sorry, but do I know you?’ She replies, ‘I may be mistaken, but I

think you might be the father of one of my children’
Gary’s mind rapidly scrambles through past events, ‘Blimey!’ He says,

‘Did we meet on Frank’s stag do in 2004?’ Gary continued,
‘When I was released from the police station and got back to the hotel

room, you had gone.’
‘Ummm no,’ she replies, ‘I teach English at Winton Primary’.

Expert Advice with a Friendly Face

Gales solicitors is a long established Bournemouth firm providing legal advice and
representation to the public since 1948. Over the years we have worked out of Charminster
and Winton and are currently located in Winton. We are an active part of the local
community taking part in local traders groups and events such as the Winton carnival and
the Kinson donkey derby. This year we were also proud to contribute to the Winton in
Bloom fund which helped brighten up Winton high street.

Over the years we have prided ourselves on offering a service which is both professional
and friendly. We have built up a large client base of satisfied and loyal customers. Many of
our clients have used the firm for years and in some cases we are now acting for a second
or even third generation. Whether someone is a long established customer or a brand new
client our aim is to ensure that our customers always want more.

As part of this we have maintained a broad range of services with experts in several
specialisms. This means that we are able to provide most of our clients with a complete
service under one roof. This ensures that we are aware of the wider circumstances of the
case and can pick up issues which might otherwise be missed. It can also help keep the cost
down.

We know that the legal world is changing and as part of that we have introduced new case
management software to improve our service for people moving house. However, we also
know that our clients want a personal service from an experienced professional. For this
reason we continue to ensure that every case is managed by one key person so that you
know who is handling your case rather than having to speak to an anonymous assistant in a
large team.

We also know what it is like to be fobbed off with jargon and we pride ourselves on giving
advice in straightforward English. Whether verbally or in writing we like to keep it clear
and simple.

Whether you have a simple problem or a complex case we can help. If you are looking for
representation in lengthy court proceedings, for help in making a will or house purchase or
just quick advice on your legal rights while you consider what to do we can help.

Give us a call to see how we can help solve your legal puzzles.

Project Indigo

One boy’s adventure through time and space!

Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com

Project Indigo is my special blog where I travel the world
(mainly the UK!) visiting places associated with Doctor Who.
Today we are travelling through time and space to
Cambridgeshire. We are visiting Classic Doctor Who filming
location Grantchester where The Fourth Doctor and Romana 2
materialised the TARDIS in the episode Shada (filmed 1979,
released 1992). You may notice that there were quite a few
years between the filming and the release. That is because
there was a big BBC Union strike when Shada was being
filmed which left many scenes of the episode unfinished. It
was eventually released on video in 1992 with Tom Baker narrating what was going on in
the gaps!
Grantchester is a village just outside Cambridge and is said to have the highest
concentration per person of Nobel Prize Winners! This is due to the number of residents
who went to or worked at Cambridge University. In Shada, the Doctor and Romana were
at Cambridge University to visit Professor Chronotis, a retired Time Lord. Whilst they were
there an alien called Skagra called upon the Professor to interrogate him and find the
whereabouts of the lost planet of Shada. It was in Grantchester Meadows that Skagra
concealed a 100m long invisible spaceship and captured Romana, K9 and a student, Chris
Parsons.
When I visited it was very early in the morning and the village was like a ghost town so
sadly I didn’t see any aliens like Skagra. On the High Street I saw The Green Man pub
and its neighbour The Red Lion which Skagra drove past. I explored the village and the
meadows which are just behind the village on the banks of the River Cam. This area was
the inspiration for the Pink Floyd song Grantchester Meadows on the album Ummagumma.
The music reflects how calm and soothing it is to be by the river.
Grantchester is also the setting and filming location for the ITV Series Grantchester. This
is based on the book series The Grantchester Mysteries by James Runcie featuring Sidney
Chambers, a vicar who is also a detective. James Norton plays Sidney, Robson Green plays

Geordie and Morven Christie plays Amanda. Two of the main
stars of Grantchester have also been in Doctor Who - both
in underwater episodes. Isn’t that a coincidence? James
Norton played Onegin a Russian Soldier on the submarine
The Firebird in the episode Cold War (2013) and Morvern
Christie played O’Donnell in Under the Lake (2015) set on
The Drum, an underwater mining base.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about Grantchester, if you
would like to read about other Doctor Who locations I have
visited please check out my blog. Goodbye!

There’s a popular internet factoid which states that the elephant
is the only animal which has four knees. But it doesn’t, it has two
knees at the back, and elbows and wrists at the front, exactly like
other quadrupeds. Elephants, horses, dogs and all other quadruped

mammals have two knees and two elbows.

“Comfortable Feet”

It’s important that our feet are comfortable whether
we are working or going for a leisurely walk. Insoles
are an excellent way to achieve comfortable feet.
Insoles are beneficial for a few simple reasons:

1. They provide cushioning and support
2. They are an efficient way of relieving foot pain
3. Improved performance during athletic activities

Here is a quick guide explaining these points in more detail.
Our insoles are individually molded to your feet so they provide the support and cushioning
needs for your feet. With this support, your feet will fatigue less easily, meaning you can enjoy
your activities throughout the day.
There are three primary foot types which affects our bodies way of absorbing impact:
overpronation, excessive supination and neutral. Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls
inwardly excessively and excessive supination is the opposite when the foot rolls to the outside.
Neutral is when weight is distributed evenly across the foot. Whatever your foot type though,
our insoles can properly support your arches into the neutral position in order to maintain a
balanced state and a healthy foot function.

Another common problem which insoles can help is plantar
fasciitis. Common symptoms of this condition is pain in the heel
and is most often felt during the first few steps of the day and
after rest. Our insoles can help reduce the strain on the plantar
fascia muscle, allowing the muscle to time it needs to heal.

Bunions can also be helped with insoles by repositioning the
foot to reduce pressure on the bunion area. This is achieved by
supporting the transverse arch which runs across the middle
of the foot from the outside to the inside. This arch provides
flexibility and support for the foot.

Finally, your sporting activities can be improved by using insoles. Sports injuries can occur
due to the repetitive and sudden movements in the feet. The most common injuries occur in
the ligaments and are related to the overuse and structural misalignment of the foot.
This can be prevented by ensuring your feet are kept in the neutral position while still
delivering dynamic flex for the arches. This support also improves energy transfer and reduces
wasted motion.

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg especially, when it’s yours!

Gardening Tips for June

June, my favourite month of the year. Long days and warm evenings
(hopefully). The 21st. is the longest day, all the warmth and sunshine has
helped the weeds seemingly do better than the plants you are so carefully
cultivating. It is best you get rid of them regularly by hoeing but if you
have missed them then here is what to do. The difficult ones are the
perennials, Dandelions, Thistles, Nettles & Bindweed. These must be dug
out with a fork removing the whole root. Take extra care with Bindweed
roots as if you leave a small section it will always grow into 2 weeds.
Annual weeds such as bitter Cress Speedwell, Chick Weed can all be
removed by regular hoeing, especially on a dry day.
Other jobs could include preparing Hanging Baskets, feeding Roses (use
Toprose or similar) to keep them healthy and sustain their perfume. Keep the
lawn cut regularly but not too short in dry weather. You can apply a selective
weed killer and feed on the lawn to keep it looking good.

Pests and grubs are manifold at this time of year so expect to see some attacks
on your fruit trees and bushes, spray or remove if you can, remembering some
pesticides leave a residue so do not eat the fruit soon after and always rinse
before eating. If you are picking Strawberries, give them a feed to keep the
fruit coming and keep covered with a net to avoid bird theft.

Gardening Tips for July

July, this is the height of Summer. Put a note on your calendar to visit
the North Bournemouth Allotments Summer Show on Saturday 5th.
August. All are welcome, come between 11.00 and 3.00 to see the best
of our fair. You too should be enjoying the view of your labours over
the previous months. The flower garden blooming, all the vegetables
developing and everywhere should be green and lush. You might have
some Courgettes to harvest, do it whilst they are small do not wait
until they become as big as Marrows. In the fruit garden your Summer
Raspberries should be loaded, currents Red, Black and the less popular
White ones will all be ready for picking. Eat them fresh or make Jam & jelly for a taste of Summer on
your toast in Winter.
Keep your eye on Clematis do not let it wilt. Use rainwater for any watering if you can. Do it in the
evening and do not let pots, baskets and indoor plants dry out. Look
after your pond if you have one and keep clear of blanket weed.
Take a walk along your perennial flowering border and remove any
deadheads. This will encourage new flowering and extend the colour
and your pleasure throughout the summer. Time to cut your Dahlias
and enjoy a full vase indoors every week if you can. If you have pots
of Geraniums (my favourite pot flower) they should be providing
a glorious show of Crimson, Pinks, Salmon and combinations to
provide a sense of the balmy Mediterranean climate.
