Project Indigo
One boy’s adventure through time and space!
Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com
Project Indigo is my blog where I travel the world visiting
people and places associated with Doctor Who.
Before Christmas I went to Wells in the Mendips in
Somerset. Because we were in the area I decided to
take my TARDIS to Wells Cathedral as it is a Doctor
Who filming location. In October 2006 it was used to
act as Southwark Cathedral in the story ‘The Lazarus
Experiment’. In this episode the Tenth Doctor and his
companion Martha go there to confront the mutant
Lazarus and the Doctor uses the cathedral organ to help
stop him in his tracks.
Wells Cathedral is dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle, brother of Saint Peter and the
patron Saint of Scotland. The current building was started around 1180 and it was the first
English cathedral to be built in the Gothic style of architecture which started in France. It
was built on the site of a Saxon Church which was built in 705 AD.
When I visited preparations for the Christmas Services were in place and finishing touches
were being made to the flowers. It felt very tranquil inside. I was most impressed by the
great ceiling and the picturesque scissor arches which are not just there to be pretty - they
are useful! They stop the tower from collapsing because the foundations were not strong
enough to support it.
I saw the organ that the Doctor used to stop Lazarus. Wells Cathedral
is well known for its organ music and world famous Cathedral Choir.
There has been an organ on site since 1310 and one organ was
destroyed by Parliamentarians during the English Civil War. The organ
used today was built in 1857 and has been developed over the years.
It’s lucky the Doctor didn’t break it!
Wells is named after the natural springs that rise from the grounds
near the cathedral. It is often described as the smallest city in
England (there is even a sign there that says it!) however that is false
- it is second to the City of London. Doctor Who is not the only thing
to be filmed here - in the same year the “international blockbuster”
Hot Fuzz was filmed in Wells and there is a blue plaque outside The
Crown pub to commemorate it. Other things filmed there include Wolf
Hall, The Hollow Crown and Poldark.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about Wells. If you would like to
read about my other Doctor Who adventures please check out my
blog. Thank you and goodbye!

“You came home early from your date,” John observed to his roommate. “What happened?”
“Well,” said the flatmate, “after dinner she invited me up to her flat. We had a couple of drinks
and she put on some soft music. Then she reached over and turned out the lights.”
“So, what next?” asked John, eyebrows raised.
“I can take a hint,” said his flatmate. “I came home.”

Introducing Brain
Tumour Support
Brain Tumour Support seeks to ensure that no-one feels alone when facing a brain tumour
diagnosis. Their mission is to support patients, carers, friends and families by providing specialist
information, guidance and emotional support, for as long as it is needed.
The support offered is designed around each individual, so responds to what patients and
families have said they need. There are monthly support groups in local areas from Cornwall to
Staffordshire, which prove to be a lifeline for many. However groups don’t suit everyone and
support is also offered one-to-one, online and through specialist counselling. This personalised
approach really can transform lives.
The charity receives no government or statutory funding, relying 100% on voluntary donations and
fundraising, and it needs to raise at least £400,000 annually to sustain its current level of service.
However, giving is not only about money. Volunteering time is also essential and plays a vital role
across the organisation. Pictured are two of the valued volunteers who help to run fundraising
stalls at various events in the local community. Such support is invaluable to boost the fundraising
needed to maintain, and hopefully expand, the support services which are in ever-growing demand.
Are you looking for a new and worthwhile challenge this year?
Every year more than 16,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour. They are now
the second most common cause of death from cancer in under 40’s and the most common solid
tumour found in children, having overtaken leukaemia as the biggest killer of children in the UK.
There is no clear cause and brain tumours can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, lifestyle or
general health.
Whilst a significant number of brain tumours can now be treated and successfully controlled,
even non-malignant and low grade tumours can have life-changing effects and many people are
unable to live the lives they had before. The physical, practical and psychological effects, for both
patients and those closest to them, are generally hidden and underestimated and Brain Tumour
Support also works to increase public awareness of the complex problems that many people
consequently face in their day to day life.
Brain tumour diagnosis is often traumatic, frightening and isolating, and its effects often take away
the ability to drive, to work or to live an independent life. Vision, balance, memory and mobility
are frequently impaired. A brain tumour, or the treatment to combat it, often results in a patient
developing epilepsy, and continual reliance on stabilising medication. And the emotional and
psychological impact on a whole family can be crushing.
Brain Tumour Support is there to give practical guidance, emotional support, information about
treatment, help coping with bereavement and much more. As well as one to one support the charity
also runs support groups in local areas from Cornwall to Staffordshire, which prove to be a lifeline
for many. The charity has seen the number of people seeking its support double in the last twelve
months and, with no Government funding, seeks to increase its fundraising revenue in order to
sustain this ever-growing workload.
If you are interested in volunteering with Brain Tumour Support, please contact Rhi Ashford,
Volunteer Coordinator on 01454 414355 or email: [email protected].
We look forward to welcoming new volunteers into our team.

NHS Retirement Fellowship
Readers are probably aware that the NHS will celebrate 70 years
since it was formed back in 1948, however they may not be
aware that an allied organisation will celebrate 40 years since its
formation in 1978.
This is the NHS Retirement Fellowship which is a nationwide body founded to provide post
working fellowship activities and ongoing support for ex NHS workers who have now reached
retirement. This is open to ex workers from all walks of the NHS from nursing staff, porters,
doctors, caterers and admin staff. Existing members tend to be hospital based but areas of the NHS
such as ambulance drivers, GP surgery staff and mid-wives etc may not be aware that the NHSRF
exists, we are very keen to invite them to make contact
The NHSRF has over 100 branches throughout the UK and membership is currently running
at over 10,000. In the Dorset area there are 4 branches Blandford, Poole, Bournemouth and
Ringwood (east Dorset) The Head office for the Fellowship is based at Dorchester and its website
can be viewed on www.nhsrf.org.uk or Tel: 01305 361317 which will provide policies and
objectives for its membership
The local branch at Bournemouth is very active with 110 members and will welcome enquiries
from anyone wishing to find out about joining. They particularly want to find out about ex staff
experiences in the NHS, good, bad, funny. The activities currently being enjoyed are monthly
talks, meals, coffee meetings, bowls , quizzes and walks with enough support other interests can
be arranged.
The people who have served NHS have given many years of their working life and built the
service we now look to when faced with health problems, they deserve the Fellowship and what it
can offer.
Anyone wishing to find out more can contact Hilary Tice on 01202 511772
A woman runs into her old friend in town one day “You’re not going to believe this,” she
said. “I found an old lamp the other day. I rubbed it and a genie popped out. He explained
that genies don’t give three wishes anymore, but he did offer me a choice between one of two
wishes. He could give me a better memory or turn my husband into the greatest lover ever.”
“Tough choice,” said her friend. “Which one did you choose?”
“That’s the thing. I can’t remember.”

Expert Advice with a Friendly Face
Legal Eye……Employment Law
A look at some of the questions asked by members of the public regarding their employment
relationship.
“I work in a care home, I am the only person on shift overnight although I am allowed to sleep when I am
not busy, but I only receive a fixed amount of money for this shift. Am I entitled to the National Minimum
Wage for nightshifts?”
Possibly yes, this area of law is fast changing and there have been a number of recent decisions from
the Courts to support the fact that nightshifts can attract the national minimum wage. It will depend
on the facts of each individual case, but if you are unable to leave the premises during your shift; it is
necessary for regulatory reasons for your employer to have a person on the premises and there is an
adequate degree of responsibility during the nightshift then it is possible that you may be entitled to
be paid the national minimum wage going forward and possibly for some of the nightshifts already
worked.
“I have been employed for just over a year, my employer has dismissed me but has not told me why. Can
they do this?”
The first issue to be established is to find out what the reason was for the dismissal. You have the right
within 14 days of your dismissal to request reasons for your dismissal in writing. Once you know
the reason for dismissal, it is worth considering whether the dismissal was unfair. A claim for unfair
dismissal normally requires two years continuous service, however, there are some circumstances
where the law considers dismissal of an employee with under two years’ service to be unfair. For
instance, if an employee raises an issue about health and safety in the workplace and they are
dismissed as a result, the law says that this would be automatically unfair.
“I suffer with depression and anxiety and find it difficult to tell work that I cannot attend. My employer
wants to discipline me for this, what can I do?”
If your condition affects your normal day to day activities, such as going to work, sleeping,
concentrating, socialising and that affect is more than minor, there is a possibility that you have rights
under the Equality Act. The Equality Act places a duty on employers to make reasonable adjustments
to help you carry out your contractual duties. Many people suffering with depression struggle to
keep in regular contact with their employer. Employers will often implement their sickness reporting
policies quite rigidly and employee often suffer with no pay or disciplinary proceedings as a result.
However, this is one area where it would be reasonable to make an adjustment to that reporting
procedure to help the employee and avoid disciplinary sanctions for unauthorised absence. Employees
should discuss with their HR department or line manager about making adjustments that are suitable
for both parties.

My university English lecturer was well known for being a fair, but hard, grader. One day
I received a B minus on a theme paper. In hopes of bettering my grade and in the spirit of the
valentine season, I sent her an extravagant heart-shaped box of chocolates with the pre-printed
inscription: “BE MINE.” The following day, I received in return a valentine from her.
It read: “Thank you, but it’s still BE MINE-US.

The Bournemouth 7s Festival team had a fortnight to
remember after being recognised with not one, but two,
prestigious industry awards
The awards follow the Festival’s 10th anniversary
celebrations last year and are recognition of the continued
support of our loyal audience and commitment of the team
responsible for every element of the festival.
The UK Festival Awards, hosted at the glamorous Troxy
in Central London, in November last year, welcomed over
600 guests from across the UK festival industry to a lavish
ceremony hosted by celebrated comedian Rufus Hound.
The award was given in recognition of the unique attraction of Bournemouth 7s Festival,
a combination of excellent sporting action with an unrivalled festival atmosphere, which has
grown rapidly since its launch in 2008. Roger Woodall, CEO and Founder of Bournemouth 7s
Festival, was delighted with the award:
“The past 10 years have been an amazing journey and I am so grateful and proud that
Bournemouth 7s Festival has been recognised with a UK Festival Award. When I first
conceived the idea back in 2007, I thought there was a real gap in the market and it’s
exceptionally rewarding to have created something which stands so proudly in that space.
My team work tirelessly to improve the festival each year and it’s great that our hard work
has been acknowledged in an unbelievably competitive sector. We are extremely excited
about our second decade and are working on some amazing ideas for 2018!”
The Festival’s second award was presented at the National Outdoor Events Association
(NOEA) Awards ceremony in the stunning surroundings of the historic Pump Rooms in Bath.
In awarding the ‘Best Sporting Event’ to the Bournemouth 7s team, the panel of industry
judges commented,
“Bournemouth 7s is a really well put together event, critically acclaimed and consistent figures.”
Paul Ashurst, Senior Events Manager, who managed the applications, was overjoyed with
the announcement,
“ NOEA is one of the most-respected trade bodies in the UK and to receive their support and
recognition is truly humbling. Over the past few years, Bournemouth 7s really has
accelerated the growth of its profile and awards such as this demonstrate how well
acclaimed the festival now is. We would genuinely like to thank our loyal band of Bournemouth
7s festival-goers. Their continued support for what we do is truly amazing and we really
wouldn’t be anywhere without them.”
The lingerie store where my friend works was crowded with shoppers selecting Valentine’s
Day gifts for their wives. A young businessman came to the till with a lacy black negligee.
My friend noticed that the next customer, an elderly gentleman, was holding a long flannel
nightgown and kept glancing at the younger man’s sexier choice. When it was his turn, the man
placed the nightgown on the counter. “Would you have anything in black flannel?” He asked.

Travel Feature -
Santa’s Lapland Trips 2018...
By Mags Addison
So, how do you find the best trip to see Father Christmas up in
the Arctic Circle?
Yes, Christmas has just recently passed, and it may seem a bit too
soon to talk about the next one, but believe me since the New
Year we have been buzzing with enquiries to see Santa’s Lapland
for the end of this year - 2018. It’s on everyone lips.
For a long while, it’s been weekend trips to Christmas Markets
in both Europe and the UK, that have been the ultimate pre-
Christmas short trip – but a new phenomenon has taken over this
year. Santa’s Lapland is now currently in vogue – it’s the festive
trip that’s every child’s dream. Short trips to Finish Lapland, are suddenly becoming very popular with
families.
It’s not the cheapest of short trips to take – but when considering how far you go, and what you get
with the experience – it’s actually good value for money, and one of those `Once in a lifetime’ family
events while the children are still young. And Lapland undoubtedly is stunningly beautiful in winter.
We featured it on our website in early January, and we have been inundated with loads of hits on it,
which has resulted in many enquiries. It seems to have caught everyone’s imagination. Well, I suppose
we are all kids at heart!!
Most of these trips offer a private visit to Father Christmas himself, and a variety of snow based
activities such as husky rides. And while snow is enchanting, and fun for family activities – it’s also well
below freezing up in the arctic circle, so it’s COLD! Therefore, thermal snowsuits and boots are usually
provided as part of your trip.
For children, it’s magical – the ultimate childhood experience- seeing Father Christmas in his natural
habitat, as we all imagine it to be. So, these tasters of seasonal winter wonderland trips are booking
quickly. There are many choices of length for these Santa trips, to give you the perfect short break in
the busy run up to Christmas, all with a thrilling, filled itineraries to them, whether it’s two to four nights.
Or how about this - an action-packed day trip with flights from Bournemouth Airport in early
December! Perfect for those of us in the South with families.
It’s a good alternative to experience the magic, without the
extended cost involved on a longer break. Your day trip
includes return flights with meals on route, thermal suit and
boot hire, a private visit to Father Christmas with a gift for
the children, plus taster sessions of: Reindeer sleigh rides,
Snowmobiles and Husky rides.
Lapland is full of wonder and beauty and an enchanting
experience for all the family, Kids, parents, grandparents,
groups of friends. Whatever the length of your short trip there,
it’s a holiday your children will never forget – and maybe not
yourself either, and the festive trip of your child’s dreams.
Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...

homes. Also needed is a permanet driver who will go out every month
on a Sunday afternoon if a regular driver cant come. Pickups can be

A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man
standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on bright pink
envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts
spraying scent all over them. His curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the
balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says, “I’m sending out 1,000
Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asks the man.
“I’m a divorce lawyer,” the man replies.

A woman came home to find her husband in the kitchen shaking frantically, having some
kind of fit. She could see wires between him and the worktop towards the electric kettle.
Intending to jolt him away from the deadly current, she whacked him with a breakfast bar stool,
breaking his arm and two ribs. Up to that moment, he had been happily listening to his IPod!

FOOT PAIN IS NOT NORMAL...
We should’nt put up with painful feet. Pain is an indication that something is wrong.
Many foot problems are related to wearing incorrect footwear.
When patients complain of foot pain,
I examine their feet and listen to what
they are saying .But my eyes are always
diverted down to look at the shoes
which very often are the cause of the
problem. When I express concern
about the footwear I am immediately
told “But you must be wrong as they
have worn this style of shoe for many
years AND THEY DON’T HURT!!”
An elderly Italian lady who’s problems
directly related to wearing ridiculous
fashion shoes was affronted when I suggested wearing trainers.
I thought she would probably not return but a year later she did wearing a trainer style
shoe I cut her nails we chatted about her family she didn’t mention any pain I didn’t
comment on her footwear.
So shoes are so important to healthy feet. It’s not just the style its how well the shoes fit.
There should be ½ an inch space beyond the longest toe and the end of the shoe. Feel
across the width of the shoe with the hand to make sure it’s not too tight. Lastly the heel
should fit in the back of the shoe and not slide up and down when walking.
I prefer a shoe with a Velcro strap or a lace up as they
give more support and they’re adjustable. Lace ups
when fastened should have a gap between the laces of
½ an inch. Most feet swell during the day so it’s better
to buy shoes in the afternoon. Shoes are so important,
do not impulse buy, shoes bought in the sales cannot
be returned so they not always the best choice.
So to reiterate...

A FRESH attempt to take the heat out of Britain’s
growing residential care crisis will be launched in
Dorset early in the New Year.
Find a care home Care Home Bedfinder enables relatives looking for a
for your loved one. place for their elderly loved ones to search locally via
a new web service.
carehomebedfinder.co.uk The way it works is that care homes register the beds
they have available with the site, and relatives search
LAUNCHING JANUARY 2018 the site to find a good match for the kind of care they
need...and can afford.
Looking for a care home Company founder Malcolm Whitham says: “When
for a loved one? relatives reach that point in life where they have to put
a parent or grandparent into a home it has to be one
Looking for funding of the most terrifying experiences a family has to go
or any related through.
“Ultimately, it’s about them having to give up their
care advice? liberty and be cared for outside of the family for the
first time.”
Visit Carehome The ambitious service will be launched in Dorset and
Bed Finder. rolled out across the country over the course of the
01202 233463 year. Added Malcolm, 39: “There are currently around
465,000 care beds in the UK with a further 140,000
expected to be needed over the next decade, due to
people living longer.
“Yet there is a real lack of independent and quality information. Relatives generally want their loved ones
living nearby. They also want crucial information on things like funding and inspection reports.
“We offer all the relevant documents - such as the care homes’ official inspection report conducted by the Care
Quality Commission – but also we explain what it means.”
The Care Home Bedfinder site is a database containing information on around 18,500 homes. Relatives can
locate homes close to where they live. Care homes pay an annual fee to sign up. It
means that when a relative finds a home they like, they can send it details of their loved one direct, and
arrange a visit. They will also be able to read reviews from other users of the care home. Each elderly resident
will have their own ‘passport’ on the site showing their interests and background to try match them to an
appropriate type of home.
For the NHS, it means they will be able to book vacant care beds online directly, if the home feels able to
meet the patient’s needs. “We hope it will alleviate the problem of bed blocking as it means NHS Trusts won’t
have to spend hours ringing around care homes for a suitable bed,” said Malcolm, who has worked with care
homes for 14 years as a supplier.
“No wonder it’s such an emotional journey for siblings which is why we want to give them as much help as
possible - to take the emotion out of it.”
The idea was prompted by the sheer number of people having a traumatic time trying to find care.
“A friend of mine had to put her father in care. Unfortunately, he was suffering from dementia, and she had
real problems finding a suitable place.
“In the end she was forced to accept second best because of a perceived lack of choice, and she regrets her
decision to this day.”

Once upon a time, there was a Prince who, through no fault of his own, was cast under a
spell by an evil witch. The curse prevented the prince from speaking or writing but for only
one word each year. However, he could save up the words so that if he did not speak for a whole
year, the following year he was allowed to speak two words. One day, he met a beautiful princess
and fell madly in love with her. With the greatest difficulty, he refrained from speaking for 2
whole years so that he could look at her and say, “My darling.” But at the end of these 2 years, he
wished to tell her that he loved her. So he waited 3 more years without speaking, bringing the
total number of silent years to 5. At the end of these 5 years, he realized that he had to ask her
to marry him. So he waited another 4 years without speaking. Finally, as the 9th year of silence
ended, his joy knew no bounds. Leading the lovely princess to the most secluded and romantic
place in that beautiful royal garden, the prince heaped a hundred red roses on her lap, knelt
before her, and taking her hand in his, said, “My darling, I love you! Will you marry me?” And
the princess tucked a strand of golden hair behind her dainty ear, opened her sapphire eyes in
wonder, and parting her ruby lips, said, “Pardon?”

To ensure we always have the best drivers we look after them, offering competitive rates of pay and

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg especially, when it’s yours!
Gardening Tips for February
February in the garden or plot is all about preparing the soil or seed bed for planting once the weather
warms up. Once the ground has been prepared and you are hoping for an early start it should be covered
with clear polythene sheeting, fleece or cloches to warm up the soil below.
Do remember to peg the covers down.
Chit your seed potatoes. This is easy and necessary. Get a cardboard egg tray or fruit box from your
supermarket and stand the potatoes upright showing the most eyes on top. Place indoors in the light
away from frost. When the sprouts (chits) are 2” to 3” long they are ready for planting.
If you are new to gardening or would like to improve the results from your efforts it might prove helpful
to get your soil tested. The cost of a test is not cheap at around £30 but the quality of the soil changes
very little over 3 to 5 years so the cost could be well worth it. The Royal Horticultural Society offers this
service mailto:[email protected] The RHS carry out tests for Potassium, Magnesium and
Phosphorus (the most important nutrients after Nitrogen). They also carry out tests to establish the Ph
balance of the soil, acidity or alkalinity. You will also be advised how to improve your soil along with
the test results.
You must provide a good sample of your soil. This can be done by taking samples across the area for
cultivation. Take about 10 samples from a ‘W’ shaped pattern. Scrape away the top surface and dig a
trowel depth hole. Place some soil from the sides of each hole in a bucket and mix thoroughly, this will
form your soil sample. All the other information you require will be sent to you by the RHS with your
soil sample pack. Good luck.
If you are becoming a keener gardener and you live within the Bournemouth Borough, then you
might want to put your name down for an Allotment. Call in at Cornelia Road any Saturday and
Sunday morning between 10.00 and 12.00 noon. We shall make you very welcome.
Gardening Tips for March
Spring cleaning. In the home is cosmetic. In the garden it is enhancing.
Cut back the stems of last years’ perennials to their recommended length. Cut Autumn fruiting
Raspberries to 2” above ground level. As you go be sure to rake up and clear all dead leaves and
plant debris. Burn or bin the waste to ensure no diseases are re distributed rather than got rid of.
Try to dig up any weeds, following on with a layer of mulch (manure or compost) to keep weed
seedlings growing to the minimum. Sorry, the job is not done. Keep an eye out for perennial weed
seedlings as you have just improved their chances of growing back. Always remove Couch grass,
invasive Buttercups and Ground Elder.
Check your Dahlia tubers if you lifted them. Remove excess or damaged tubers. You could start off
new plants with some of the new shoots once they are a few inches long. Keep the cuttings in the
warmth in pots in the greenhouse, if you have one. The site for your intended planting should be
well manured now. You can plant last years’ tubers from later this month when some green shoots
are showing.
For Geranium and Fuchsia lovers like me, now is the time to clean up and re-pot any you have
overwintered. Watering can be increased a little to promote new
shoots. Do not forget to pot up your lilies and begonias whilst
planting out your Gladioli corms.
It is at times like this we need to know who our friends are, but be
FRIEND FOE careful with Slug pellets.
