Chiropody / Podiatry

AH Parfiit Chiropdy provides professional foot treatments for all the family

Chiropody / podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis
and treatment of the foot, ankle and lower leg
conditions, and there is no difference between a
chiropodist or a podiatrist. Chiropody is the old term
for treatment by a foot health professional but the
term podiatry is becoming increasingly used as it is
a common term, used all over the world,
for treatment by a foot health professional.

The team at AH Parfitt Chiropodry are registered with the Health Care
Professions Council and are members of the Society of Chiropodists and
Podiatrists, with extended scope of practice for ‘Foot Mobilisation’ and local
anaesthetic to carry out nail surgery.

There are many ailments and conditions that can be successfully treated by a
qualified chiropodist, these include: Aching and/or tired feet, Musckuloskeletal
problems, Biomechanical abnormalities of the foot and ankle, Flat feet and
fallen arches, Skin conditions, Corns and Callus, Verrucae and warts, Fungal
infections of the skin and nails, Diabetic foot health, Sports Injuries and
Paediatric (children’s) feet.

Common Problems

Athletes Foot - Verrucaes - Heel Pain - Corns and Calluses - Bunions
Ingowing Toenails - Plantar Fasciitis - Diabetic Foot Conditions
Hammer Toes - Fungal Nail Infections - Arthritis in the Feet

People with diabetes may be at risk of developing foot
problems. Therefore it is beneficial to be screened, at least
annually, to detect the presence of neuropathy, ischaemia
and/or foot deformities.

This young city worker is sitting at the bar after work one night, when this
big construction worker sits down next to him. They get to talking over their
beers and eventually the conversation gets on to nuclear war. The young city guy
says to the construction worker, “If you hear the sirens go off, the missiles are on

their way, and you’ve only got 20 minutes left to live, what would you do?”
The construction worker replies, “That’s easy - I’m gonna make it with anything

that moves.” The construction worker then asks the lad what he’d do.
He replies, “I’m going to try and keep perfectly still.”

A solicitor dies in a tragic accident on his 40th birthday. He ascends to heaven
where he’s greeted at the Pearly Gates by a brass band and Saint Peter.
Saint Peter shakes the guys hand warmly, and says “Congratulations!”
The solicitor is a little confused. “Congratulations for what?” he asks.

“Congratulations for what!?” says Saint Peter. “We’re celebrating the fact you
lived to the grand old age of 160.” The solicitor says, “But that’s not right -
I only lived to be 40.” “That’s impossible,” says Saint Peter.
“We added up all the hours you booked against clients!”

I decided to seek a new challenge and applied for a role at the newly-opened Rick

22 Travel Feature -

Athens - City of History
By Mags Addison

I’d been to Athens once before many years ago, so I jumped at the chance
to go again recently. I caught a direct British Airways flight from Heathrow,
but several low-cost airlines offer routes to Athens from various UK airports.
Like all European capitals, Athens is busy with tourists seeing the sights,
especially in summer – so be prepared for crowds if you come at this time
of year, and be warned, the temperatures get very high from end of June to
September, so personally I would recommend spring or autumn to be a more
comfortable way to see this lovely city, when the temperatures and tourists
alike have settled down a bit. Easier to tour and enjoy its ancient history.
I’d found a small city hotel on our system with an open rooftop pool – and even better - with the most
amazing views of the Acropolis on top of its hill, overlooking the city. Not only was it bliss to swim and
relax up there after a hot day’s sightseeing, but the rooftop bar served meals until late, so we were able to
linger and enjoy seeing it lit up at night. And to add a note here; everywhere in the city we ate, the food
was fresh, colourful and tasty. For starters, try exploring the Plaka area in the old town which is full of
family run tavernas.
Athens is an elegant city with good transports systems and roads – and a good underground Metro to get
around which also wasn’t expensive. And while Athens is the capital of modern-day Greece, it was also
once the heart of its ancient civilisation and empire, and the city was built around the Acropolis, still the
most visited and famous ancient attraction. Athens is still dominated by its 5th century BC landmarks.
So, there is plenty to see and experience.
We wandered around the colourful Plaka district, Athens’ oldest residential quarter – which is not far from
the changing of the guard at the Parliament Building at Syntagma Square. Crowds gather here every day
to watch the synchronized movements of the costumed guards. Which is fun to watch, and to admire the
pageantry.
We also travelled out to Cape Sounion one afternoon and the ruins of the clifftop Temple of Poseidon
– famous not only for its history, but for its glorious sunsets and Lord Bryon. We finished our stay in
Greece with a full day trip up to Delphi some miles north of Athens at the foot of Mount Parnassos, once
an important religious sanctuary to the God Apollo, and home of
oracle of Apollo, and now an important UNESCO site.
It seemed to me, there is more security now and less access to
get close to all the monuments and ancient ruins than I remember
years ago, and they are very protective of their treasures. But
then – these ancient sites have been standing there since 5th
century BC – so naturally, Athens want to preserve them for the
future generations to come.

I never wanted to believe that my Dad was stealing from his job as a road
worker. But when I got home, all the signs were there.

“So I rang up a local building firm, I said ‘I want a skip outside my house.’
He said ‘I’m not stopping you.’

I was going to join the debating team at Uni, but somebody talked me out of it.
I saw a documentary about how they fix steelwork together last night. Riveting!
My tight-fisted neighbour doesn’t want to pay for an electrician to re-wire his

house so he’s going to try and do it himself.
“How hard can it be?” he said. I think he’s in for a shock.

EXPERENCE REALLY DOES MATTER

1/ Trust The Agent: Are you comfortable with your agent?

NO? Choose again. YES? Let them get on with the job.

2/ Beware High Valuations: Overvaluation is buying your business, ask for

recent comparable evidence. Ultimately you will need to reduce your price, a negative

that buyers do notice. “What is wrong with it”? they will be asking themselves.

3/ Beware Very Low Fees: Low fees need a high turnover of sales - pushing for sales

at any price. Cheap agents, cheap service, others may even be “Virtual”

The fact is many buyers prefer to deal face to face with a real Human Being.

4/ Poor negotiators can cost you a fortune: Most houses don’t need a salesman, you

need a negotiator, a skill that can substantially improve your position. Use an agent

you feel has the right attributes, can negotiate well and knows their product.

5/ The multi agency trap: Don’t mistake for multi-listing. Multi-agency, one of two

things will happen, be persuaded with the first buyer (not the best buyer) - winning the

sale, or your agent may not try too hard, they may lose the race so may not start it.

Either way it is not good for you.

6/ No “For Sale” Signs: FOR SALE boards are 24 hour sales tools.

Buyers drive the area they want to live in, keen to find they will make a fast decision.

If they see a property they like they will follow it up.

7/ Dismissing early Buyers : The best buyers often strike early with best prices,

perhaps been waiting to secure a home like yours. The longer on the market, the less

buyers will be attracted. Genuine buyers make the first move.

8/ Ignoring Agent Feedback: This can identify problem areas that can effect a

sale, you need honest feedback. After a period of time if they say it’s too expensive it

probably is.

9/ Keep It Clean: Dull Homes get dull prices. First Impressions count, inside and out.

Make your home sparkle and your price will shine.

10 Experience Counts : Rarely do we get asked of our knowledge of the area, the

facilities available, how long have we been valuing in the area, experience of staff

and so on. You are paying for our expertise and experience, you need to make

sure we have some.

We are a very busy agency but always have time for anybody

wanting to sell or buy probably their most valuable asset.

Project Indigo

One boy’s adventure through time and space!

Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at...
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com

Project Indigo is my blog where I travel the world visiting people
and places associated with Doctor Who. In the Easter of 2019 I
went to Greenwich which was the filming location for the 1993
Doctor Who Children In Need Special ‘Dimensions in Time’. In this
charity episode the Doctor’s evil enemy The Rani is running amok
and has the Doctor caught in a 20 year time-loop in the East End
of London.

In the episode the Seventh Doctor and Ace are on their way to
China but the TARDIS unexpectedly materialises in Greenwich at
the Cutty Sark in 1973. The Cutty Sark was a British ship built for
trading tea, travelling to China like the Doctor attempted. She is
a clipper, a fast sailboat, and when built in 1869 was one of the
fastest sailing ships. Soon after came the development of steam
ships and the end of sail-based trade. She was used as a cargo
ship, then for training, then made redundant.
In 1954 she was moved to a dry dock in Greenwich and was preserved as a museum ship.
She is now a very popular tourist attraction.

The Doctor and Ace make their way to Albert Square where the Rani is rummaging
through the Doctor’s personal time stream and facing down the all the original Classic
incarnations of Doctor Who - Doctors 1-7! Not only do we see all the Doctors but a variety

of companions and enemies as we warp through space and time.
Not to mention a number of Eastenders characters too!

The resolution takes place back in Greenwich, the home of time, with
the Doctor returning to the TARDIS then travelling to the Old Naval
College. He discovers the Rani is trying to gain control of evolution
by transferring a Time Tunnel to the Greenwich Meridian Line. This
line runs through Greenwich and from pole to pole, Longitude Zero.
It divides East from West as the Equator divides North from South
and it lies at the centre of all time zones. Every place on earth is
measured in relation to this line. The Doctor deduces her plan in the
grounds of the National Maritime Museum and propels the Rani’s
TARDIS into her own trap - hoist by her own petard!

Maritime Greenwich has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for 21 years. It was awarded
this status due to its outstanding contribution to history, culture and science. I had a
very interesting time exploring Greenwich and would definitely recommend it to anyone
intrigued by maritime history.
If you would like to read about my other Doctor Who adventures please check out my blog.

Thanks for reading, goodbye!

Joint Rona Trust Sailing Trip for
Canford School and The Bourne Academy

Students from The Bourne Academy joined students from sponsor, Canford school,
to participate in a Sail Training Voyage (STV), with The Rona Sailing Project
(RSP). The RSP is a volunteer based Sail Training organisation, using the sea as the
medium for promoting youth development.

Three Bourne Academy students joined eight from Canford
School for the weeklong trip to sail to various locations
on the south coast including: Weymouth, Torquay and
Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. They sailed a total of 285
nautical miles with a maximum wind force of 7.

All three students from The Bourne Academy were
delighted to have received a Scott Award: completing a
six night STV, and giving their personal best and proving
themselves to be keen and reliable members of the crew.
They all displayed hard work, dedication and teamwork,
and also gained a RYA Competent Crew qualification.

Throughout the STV all students were active members of
the crew, participating in all aspects of running the ship - from sail handing and
rope work to navigation, helming and domestic duties on board. As part of their
Competent Crew course, they also learned eight different knots, learned sailing
terminology and practical sail setting. The students also prepared all food on the
trip and they were responsible for keeping the ship clean
and tidy.

Bourne Academy teacher, Sharon McCarthy, accompanied
students on the trip and said ‘It was a real pleasure. All
students enthusiastically participated in all activities from
sail setting and helming to cooking and cleaning. Some great
friendships formed as The Bourne Academy and Canford
students worked together in two watches sailing the ship an
impressive 285 NM along the South Coast. It was great to
see students show resilience and not shy away from things
they found difficult and personally challenging’.

Students thoroughly enjoyed the project and have said that
they cannot wait to go sailing again.

Answers on page 44

I was sitting at a bar one time, when I noticed that, next to me, an old drunk was
hassling one of the biggest, toughest guys I’d ever seen.

The old guy was clearly blasted, and kept getting in the tough guy’s face, saying
“I slept with your mother.”

Despite being huge and muscled the tough guy just kept shrugging it off. The old guy
laughed in the tough guy’s face, saying it again. “Hey, I slept with your mother.”
Then, the old man even poked him, and repeated himself,
“No seriously, I slept with your mother.”

At this point, finally, the tough guy had had enough. He grabbed the old man by his
jacket and began to pull him out of the bar, yelling,
“That’s it. We’re going home, Dad. You’re drunk.”

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg especially, when it’s yours!

August / September - Gardeners Tips

August is the last true month of summer and the garden and vegetable plots are still at their best. If you
are quick and want to continue to enjoy the English salad season. There is time to sow quick growing
salad crops such as Lettuce, Rocket and radish.
Dead heading flowers is essential to prolong flowering well into September as the later flowers come to
their peak.

If you have a Wisteria and don’t know how to keep it flowering
better each year. There are some simple rules. Unless Wisteria is
pruned twice a year it will grow very large and almost certainly out
grow its allotted space and over time it will cease to flower. Take a
good look at the Wisteria now it always shows a huge amount of
growth that it has put on over the summer, and it is time to cut off
the long whippy growth and all the laterals ( these are the stems
that grow at an angle) from the main branch at the base. This will
also ensure the Wisteria does not grow into stonework crevices, drainpipes or anywhere else where
it can potentially cause damage. Harvesting and watering are the main tasks this month. If you keep
harvesting your fruit, courgettes and beans they will respond just like dead heading flowers and continue
to grow even more produce. Keep everything watered, not forgetting the bird bath, pond, pots and
especially any hanging baskets still in bloom.

September is here and most gardening guides talk about tidying up, putting away and generally getting
ready for winter. Not so in this edition of the Local Eye. This month we are going to plant and sow to
make a positive step to further enjoy our plot and garden.
Leave any flowering perennials to continue and let them fade gracefully. Keep dead heading to prolong
the flowering season.
Sow some winter salads in the greenhouse or other sheltered area, grow in cells or grouped in large pots.
Rocket doesn’t bolt in cooler temperatures and can last a long time in the Autumn. Chicory is good now
and if you planted it earlier you can now harvest the roots, cutting of the leaves and cover with compost
in a tall pot then cover again to keep the light out. Check in a couple of months to find delicious blanched
Chicory leaves, great with Smoked Bacon & Poached eggs. Sow Winter Lettuce, Spinach and mixed
salad seeds.
Try your hand at Umbellifers, they look a lot like cow parsley and are great lacy flowers , ideal to include
in flower arrangements and vases. This a good time to sow as the seeds do need 3 months or so of cold
weather before germinating. Prick them out and pot them on in February/ March. Plant in situ in
April for a glorious display. Sweet Cicely variety is a perennial May-
flowering umbellifer, mostly grown for the vegetable patch. Use one
leaf in stewed rhubarb and less sugar will be needed. The large black
seeds can be eaten and it does self-seed. If you haven’t dug up your
Potatoes, now is the time to do so if you intend to eat them before the
slugs do. If you haven’t dug up your Potatoes, now is the time to do so
if you intend to eat them before the slugs do.

MTA MEMBER FOCUS

Still & Bedford

The independent ethical Bournemouth opticians.

At Still & Bedford we believe in a different approach to optics, focused on
ethics, honesty and integrity. As an independent, family-run practice we make
your experience as informed and comfortable as possible.

We have provided excellence in optical care for over 70 years, a
foundation built on our patient’s trust in us.

We provide a wide range of NHS, private and specialist services. For most
people everything starts with a sight test which allows us to establish your
ocular health and history.

We offer lenses of all types, from single vision designs through to the latest
varifocal lenses, which can be supplied with a scratch-resistant or anti-
reflective coating.

To complement these we have a comprehensive range of high-quality frames
in both modern and classic styles. With over 650 frames on display we are
sure to have something just for you.

Our range is on display at our dispensing showroom in Highfield Road,
Ensbury Park and you are welcome to visit to browse our collection.

Please call the practice on 01202 529414 with any questions or to enquire
about our special offers; we will be happy to assist.
