Volunteers needed now for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal in Dorset

Marie Curie, the UK’s leading charity for people living with a terminal illness and their
families, is urgently calling for volunteers in Dorset to give just two hours of their time
to support the Great Daffodil Appeal – Marie Curie’s biggest fundraising campaign, held
every March.

The money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses provide
much-needed expert care to people across Dorset with terminal illnesses, as well as support for their loved
ones.

Andrew Rennison from Dorchester, said: “I have been a Marie Curie supporter since August 2017, just after
my wife Kerri died. In the last few months of her life she received the very best care from Marie Curie Nurses.
The team are experts in palliative care, they made Kerri’s last few, and at times very painful, months bearable.
“I am now Chair of the Marie Curie Dorchester Fundraising Group and would warmly welcome any new
volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to support Marie Curie and to recognise the valuable help they provide
to so many people at the most difficult times of their lives.

“Whole families benefit from Marie Curie’s care and support, it is wonderful to meet those families, many of
whom want to give something back and choose to do so as volunteers. Volunteering takes many forms, and
does not need to take up much time. But whatever you do is great fun and hugely rewarding.”
Steph Sterndale-Bennett, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Dorset, said: “Collecting can be a lot of fun,
you can do it on your own or with family and friends, and we will support you every step of the way. We only
ask our volunteers to do two-hour shifts, and you can sign up for just the one or as many as you’d like!”

To volunteer for Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal and give out the charity’s daffodils pins in return for
donations, please visit: mariecurie.org.uk/collect
or contact Steph on: [email protected] or 07753 257166.

Chiropody / Podiatry

AH Parfiit Chiropdy provides professional foot treatments for all the family

Chiropody / podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis
and treatment of the foot, ankle and lower leg
conditions, and there is no difference between a
chiropodist or a podiatrist. Chiropody is the old term
for treatment by a foot health professional but the
term podiatry is becoming increasingly used as it is
a common term, used all over the world,
for treatment by a foot health professional.

The team at AH Parfitt Chiropodry are registered with the Health Care
Professions Council and are members of the Society of Chiropodists and
Podiatrists, with extended scope of practice for ‘Foot Mobilisation’ and local
anaesthetic to carry out nail surgery.

There are many ailments and conditions that can be successfully treated by a
qualified chiropodist, these include: Aching and/or tired feet, Musckuloskeletal
problems, Biomechanical abnormalities of the foot and ankle, Flat feet and
fallen arches, Skin conditions, Corns and Callus, Verrucae and warts, Fungal
infections of the skin and nails, Diabetic foot health, Sports Injuries and
Paediatric (children’s) feet.

Common Problems

Athletes Foot - Verrucaes - Heel Pain - Corns and Calluses - Bunions
Ingowing Toenails - Plantar Fasciitis - Diabetic Foot Conditions
Hammer Toes - Fungal Nail Infections - Arthritis in the Feet

People with diabetes may be at risk of developing foot
problems. Therefore it is beneficial to be screened, at least
annually, to detect the presence of neuropathy, ischaemia
and/or foot deformities.

Speed Networking Event Focused on Student
Emotional Health

The Bourne Academy organised a ground-breaking speed networking
event where key front line and pastoral staff from the Academy liaised
with representatives from relevant local care services. The aim of
the event was to share knowledge and information about school and
community support for young people, and their families, with a ‘low level’
emotional health issues.

The event allowed staff from the Academy to talk in a group, followed
by ‘speed dating’ style approach where academy staff got to speak
with the healthcare professionals on a one to one basis with staff from;
Public Health Dorset, help & Care, citizens advice, Relate, Early Help
Operations, School Nursing, Chat Health, Dorset Mind, Mental Health in
Schools Team & local GPs.

The Bourne Academy ensures that staff are regularly trained and
provided with information which addresses safeguarding and emotional
issues with students. Caroline Gobell, Business Director, said ‘This
meeting was a fantastic opportunity to cross fertilise and network
with local care services – informing them of our process and needs
whilst further developing the Academy’s highly dedicated pastoral and
safeguarding team.’

A group of Slimming World Consultants from Bournemouth
celebrated their groups’ successes by meeting chat show host

e sliSmlimtfwhitomharit l eandcomedian,AlanCarr.
ng WorldAlan, a well-loved TV personality, co-hosted the annual
Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Margaret opened her
Slimmingfirst group in 1969 and over the last 50 years Slimming World has become the nation’s favourite way to lose weight*,
supporting almost one million slimmers.
World f eeling! The team, who run Slimming World groups in Bournemouth, were delighted to get a chance to meetAlan. Barbara
Edwards said it was the perfect end to a fantastic year for the Bournemouth Slimming World groups. “The members at our
group make me burst with pride, not only have they seen big changes on the scales, many have improved their health and
completely changed their lives too.

“For many people, taking that first step into a Slimming World group takes a huge amount of courage. But they’re always
certain of a warm welcome and introduction to our fabulously flexible eating plan which means you’re never hungry while
you’re losing weight. And when you join a group and stay each week members support each other with motivation, tips
and ideas, cheering each other on and boosting each other to face any challenges.

“Watching people grow in confidence each week and take on things that they didn’t think possible before losing weight
absolutely amazes me. I feel proud of the small part I play in supporting people to achieve their dreams and to celebrate
alongside them when they do, so we were honoured to represent the Bournemouth groups at the Slimming World Awards.
Alan was left in awe of the difference Slimming World makes to people’s lives too.”

Alan, who presented comedy chat show Chatty Man on Channel 4, said it was great to be invited to the event, which was
held at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre. He said: “I met so many people who had transformed their lives
and it was clear how much the support they received from their ‘Slimming World family’ meant to them. Every one of them
spoke passionately about how they couldn’t have made those changes to eat more healthily and become more active
without the support of their Consultants and group every week. I left the awards feeling so uplifted and positive, I wish I
could’ve bottled that Slimming World feeling.

Sadie Kerslake-Smith continues: “Last year was our 50th year, which was full of celebrations and successes.
We’ve supported more people than ever to achieve their dreams and we’re so excited about what 2020 has in store.”

“For anyone who may be thinking of taking that step to lose weight and improve their health this New Year I truly believe
that joining a local Slimming World group is the best way for people to learn new habits and make long-term healthy
changes. At the Bournemouth groups they’ll discover a whole world of support to help them achieve their dreams and stay
slim for life – with lots of fun along the way too!”

Supporting blind and partially
sighted people living in the
Bournemouth, Christchurch
and Poole area

Bournemouth Blind Society was founded in 1911. We continue with the same
passion as our founders to try to find new and creative ways to help our members
retain their independence.

Working both at our centre in Moordown and out in the community, we try to
make activities fun, fun for our members, fun for our volunteers, fun for our staff.
The level of laughter is a barometer of how well we are achieving our aims.

The Bournemouth Blind Society Centre is treated as ‘home’ by many of our
members. Everyone is given a warm, friendly welcome by our staff and volunteers.
We provide hot food, activities, advice and support. Our Centre is open from 9am
to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

Bournemouth Blind Society is an independent, local charity. We are not affiliated
with any other group or charity. We receive a small grant from the Local Authority
towards the costs of running our Resource Centre and Community Support
service, otherwise we are self-financing, relying on donations, fund-raising activities
and legacies to meet our costs.

Encore Care Homes
Nominated For Top National Award

BOURNEMOUTH based Encore Care Homes has been recognised for the second year
running at the national Care Home Awards 2020. They were recently announced as a
finalist for the category of Best Nutrition, Food or Dining Experience.

The award nomination focused on the work of Head
Chef, David Black and his catering team at Oakdale care
home. The judges were especially impressed by his con-
sidered approach to each resident’s past medical history
and how current medication affects their interaction with
food.

Head Chef at Oakdale care home, David Black, says:
“Preparing freshly cooked, nutritional meals is a top priority for me and this is some-
thing that I have been delivering from the outset. I strive to inject passion and personality
into our meals, that will not only provide our residents with their nutritional needs, but it
also makes the dining experience enjoyable and continually varied.”

He added: “When creating the weekly menu, we take into consideration all of our resi-
dents’ specific requirements and ensure that we are producing balanced meals that both
appeal to the taste buds but also have a positive impact on their health. There are often
many misconceptions that are made surrounding an elderly person’s diet. For example,
it is necessary to incorporate some fat into the diet. Omega fats that are commonly found
in oily fish can help to improve circulation, lower blood pressure and can reduce the risk
of heart disease.”

Rachel Dryden, Chief Executive of Encore, said: “I am extremely delighted that David
Black and his team have received this recognition for their hard work at Oakdale care
home. This passion and commitment to the food and nutrition of residents is what sets
us apart in the care industry. It’s always very satisfying to see the personal touch that our
staff extend to all our residents throughout Encore.”

Oakdale is a purpose-built care home supporting 84 residents, offering residential, nurs-
ing and dementia care. Situated in Poole, the home is at the centre of the local communi-
ty and only a short drive from Poole town centre and Canford Heath.
The home is part of the Encore family that includes Fairmile Grange in Christchurch,
Great Oaks in Bournemouth and Hamble Heights in Fareham.

The Care Home Awards 2020 takes place on May 15 in London.

Independent Estate Agents & Valuers

Is print advertising for estate agents dead and buried?

The printing industry is in the midst of a decline as digital products and services
displace printed materials, which is why there has been an increase in the number of
firms, including estate agents, diverting a greater proportion of their marketing budgets
from traditional print media to online publications.

The change in the way consumers behave and now consume content is reflected by
the fact that more than 95% of property searches now start online - contributing
significantly to the huge success achieved by the major property portals, such as
Rightmove and OnTheMarket, and explains why most estate agents now receive the
bulk of their sales leads online.

But while the traditional printing market has continued to decline, reports of the ‘death
of print’ have been greatly exaggerated.
Research shows that although a growing number of consumers are abandoning print
newspapers for tablet editions and reading on their smartphones, reflecting the change
in the way people communicate with one another, the fact is that many people do still
prefer to consume content via print, rather than screen or device.

A survey of over 10,700 consumers was commissioned by Two Sides and carried out
by leading research company Toluna, revealing a strong preference for print when it
comes to recreational reading, including books, magazines and news.

Some 78% of people in the UK prefer to read content in print, such as a magazine,
while 72% of respondents believe reading a printed book is more enjoyable than
reading a book on an electronic device.

The study also found that 78% of Britons do not pay attention to most online adverts,
suggesting that print ads make a better impression than digital ones. It is important that
an estate agent is able to regularly get its brand in front of local consumer’s eyes, and
there are many ways in which print can offer competitive advantages over electronic
mail. Printed materials have a much longer shelf life than anything that’s on screen,
so consumers are constantly reminded and can refer back to a brochure or a magazine
time and time again with ease... which is why we are are here and you are reading this!

Project Indigo

One boy’s adventure through time and space!

Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at...
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com

Project Indigo is my blog where I travel the world visiting people and places associated with
Doctor Who.

On New Year’s Eve I wanted to see out the decade somewhere
fun so I paid a visit to Brighton - the happiness capital of the UK!
This was a location for the Classic Doctor Who episode The Leisure
Hive (1980).

In the episode the Fourth Doctor attempted to travel to the
opening of Brighton Pavilion. His previous try was spectacularly
unsuccessful and he ended up at an island called Fang Rock
instead. This time it was a case of right place wrong time and the
Doctor took the opportunity to snooze in a deck chair leaving his
companions Romana II and K9 to amuse themselves.

Apparently there are 614,600,000 pebbles on Brighton beach, which was bad news for K9. As he
chased after a beach ball his he lost control of his wheels and ended up in the sea - with explosive
results! Like me they were visiting in winter so, after K9’s mishap, a cold and fed-up Romana II
convinced the Doctor to go to a holiday complex called The Leisure Hive on the planet Argolis. Poor
Tom Baker was suffering from an illness during filming, which is why the Doctor is shown relaxing
for a change. As the Doctor says, ‘Sleep is for tortoises!’.

The Time-Travellers had parked their TARDIS between the Palace Pier and the West Pier and we
can see both clearly in the episode. The West Pier closed 5 years before filming but there were
always plans to reopen it. Sadly it was badly damaged in the 1987 storm and access was removed
for safety reasons. Following more storm damage in 2002 and two arson attacks in 2003 all that
remains today is the shell of the pier. The West Pier Trust are leaving nature to take its course and
let the pier be reclaimed by the sea.

This was not my first visit to Brighton, in fact I went there for
my first ever Doctor Who adventure! Doctor Who was brought
back to TV in March 2005 for the first time since the Eighth
Doctor movie in 1996. To celebrate, Brighton Pier hosted an
official Doctor Who exhibition with props and costumes from
the New and Classic series. The exhibition ran from May to
November 2005. I was born in June and had my first encounter
with a Dalek when I was a new-born baby! From then on I
knew I would be a life-long fan on the Doctor.

If you would like to read about my other Doctor Who adventures please check out my blog.
Thanks for reading, goodbye!

Jimmy, the painter, often would thin his paint so it would go further.

at our cluSobwshen the Church decided to do some deferred maintenance, Jimmy
was able to put in the low bid, and got the job. As always, he thinned his

paint way down with turpentine. On the third day while he was up on the

scaffolding -- the job almost finished -- he heard a horrendous clap of

thunder, and the sky opened. The downpour washed the thinned paint off

the church and knocked Jimmy off his scaffold and onto the lawn among the

gravestones and puddles of thinned and worthless paint.

Brain Power

1: You roll a 5 sided pencil on the table. On one of its sides is written “HB Pencil”, the others are

blank. What is the chance that the side with text on it ends up straight on top?

2: Two identical bolts are placed together so their grooves intermesh. If you move the bolts
around each other as you would twiddle your thumbs, holding each bolt firmly by the head
so it does not rotate and twiddling them in the direction shown below, will the heads:

(a) move inward
(b) move outward
(c) remain the same distance from each other

3: In grammatically correct English, which is the right way to say...
“the yolk of the egg is white” or “the yolk of the egg are white”?

4: On top of which number is the car parked?

5: A mother has 4 children. On Halloween, they collected 100 sweets between them, and she
decides to share them equally, one for you, one for you.. starting with the youngest child,
then the second youngest, third youngest, etc. At some point, they have to interrupt the
procedure and eat dinner, but when they continue, nobody remembers which was the last
child to get a sweet. How can the mother distribute the remaining sweets to the kids without
starting over again or counting how many sweets have been given so far?

6: A librarian has put the three volumes of a trilogy
on a shelf in order, next to each other. The books
are hard copies, with pages which are 1/100in thick
and covers which are 1/8in thick. A worm is eating
its way from the first page of the first volume to the
last page of the third volume. If each of the volumes
contains 400 pages, how long is this distance?

In Summer 2020 I will be travelling to Ecuador with a group of
children from Glenmoor and Winton Academies. Whilst there I
will be volunteering within the local community with projects like;
building reliable water systems and toilet systems that will help
tackle the poor sanitation and lack of water. Building a community
and children’s centre and helping out in the communities organic
and ethnobotanical* garden and tree nursery. (*focus on region’s
plants and their traditional and practical, often medicinal uses)

This amazing opportunity costs £4500, so far I have raised
£2945 through friends, family, selling sites, birthday and
Christmas pennies, a weekly tuck shop at Guides, attending
school fayres, car boots and a ‘Race for Ecuador event’
supported by friends, family and a number of local business
sponsors; Connects Scaffolding, Binnies Café, Soutars Fine
Meats, ALC Jobs, Dolphin Brewery and Oakmedians RFC. At
school we are organising a mufti day, a tuck shop and a stall for
our Christmas Fayre and as a family we are thinking of an event
to host in the New Year.

For me, taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh program, allowed me to realize the impact
that individuals like myself can have on local communities and further afield which in turn
has inspired me to participate in this expedition. I am excited to immerse myself and learn
from a new culture and country. I am passionate about making sure future generations
can enjoy the beautiful places the world has to offer so being given the opportunity to
replant hundreds of trees back into the lungs of the Earth, the Amazon rainforest is truly
remarkable. I also strongly believe all children should have access to education and by
helping to build a community school for one of the most deprived areas of Ecuador I am
humbled to be helping provide opportunities for their children’s futures.

This expedition is also extremely important to me because I feel it will develop me as a
person. I am 100% positive this expedition will build my confidence in all areas. I have a
desire to make friendships with people from all over the world and from many different

walks of life. I also want to improve my knowledge and
understanding of the human impact on our planet and see
what changes we can all make to reduce this. I think this
expedition will provide me with an incredible opportunity
to meet and talk to the local people about their culture and
gain knowledge of the challenges they face day to day.

Thank you for taking the time to read about my reasons
behind wanting to take this trip and the efforts I am making
to fundraise for it.

If you would like to sponsor me or donate to my fundraising I would be very grateful.

2020 – Challenges in Travel
By Mags Addison

We are only a couple of months into 2020, and already within the
travel industry we’ve been hit hard with a host of challenges, from
around the world. Brexit, Bushfires in Australia, the Coronavirus,
Storms Ciara and Dennis in the UK.

Regarding the UK storms, the last couple of weeks caused lots of
damage, and delays. So, we were all hit by chronically affected flights,
ferries, rail, and other public transport during the two weekends
affected. Storm Dennis hit at the start of the half term weekend, always a busy time at airports, and ports,
and in this we must be guided by the airlines, airports and ferry companies - but naturally it causes chaos
to travellers and travel agents alike. We are lucky to have a 24-hour Duty Office that keep us updated
and supported with any pending issues as they happen.

Regarding the Coronavirus outbreak, it’s impossible to comment here because events are constantly
changing, and anything I write could be out of date by the time this is published. My company have set up
a dedicated crisis line that we, Travel Counsellors, can get in touch with for advice and help should any of
our bookings be affected. And I’ve already had some of mine pulled into the net. Meanwhile, my advice is
to check the Foreign Office website for the latest updates and information on any country you are visiting.
The link for this is: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice

Regarding the bushfires in Australia, this was devastating to read about
and I’m sure like myself, many of us donated to the various emergency
organizations during January. But a couple of months on the message
is that Australia is Safe to visit, and the best thing we can do is to visit
as normal and increase tourism. Huge swathes of the country were
unaffected by the fires, and those that were - are now open again for
business. So, my message is come and visit this amazing country, and do get in touch if you want any
information. I get updates by the tourist boards there and am doing a training day in March.
Regarding Post Brexit the UK is in a transition period until the end of this year, so for now, nothing has
changed - however my company’s website would always give updates.
www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/gb/leisure/brexit-travel-advice/brexit-on-travel

This gives advice on passports with a link to a handy tool to check the validity/expiry date of yours, plus
advise on healthcare (EHIC) and driving abroad. It finishes by saying always ask your Travel Counsellor
for help and support, and if in doubt – check the latest FCO travel advise again. It all sounds daunting if
you are planning to travel, but you’re not on your own. It’s what we do as Travel Agents that care –
we follow through your booking from start to finish, so that if anything changes you will be updated and I
would be in touch

Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...

Title: Justice Delayed

Author: Pat Marlow

ISBN: 9781784656027

Genre: Fiction / Crime & mystery

Price: £10.99

Imprint: Vanguard Press

PRESS RELEASE
Pegasus Publishers are pleased to announce the publication of Justice Delayed. Available to order from
bookshops or direct from the publisher.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Kate Meredith was about to witness a post mortem on a mutilated body found in strange circumstances.
Not her favourite part of the job as a detective sergeant, but it had to be done.
The dead man's past uncovered an historic abuse case involving vulnerable boys at a children's home.
Something unspeakable had been happening and Kate was about to uncover the sordid and sinister details.
A child had been molested and died but the lack of evidence, and a less than convincing coroner's report,
urged them into reopening the case.
Investigations took them to France and the search for a priest who was the chief suspect.
When other victims came forward years later to corroborate the story, they were able to finally bring to
justice the criminals involved.
But the priest wasn't the only abuser and the secrets revealed by an old computer helped uncover the final
sinister story to get the evil perpetrators prosecuted.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Pat Marlow was born in Hartlepool and lives in Bournemouth and in France. After three years at art
college, she worked in Turkey and the Sudan teaching English as a foreign language.
Having brought up her four children, Pat decided to study Law and was called to the Bar after five years of
studying. After working for the Crown Prosecution Service, she practised independently as a criminal
barrister. This is her first book.

Scout Troop Cooking Competition
We’re pleased to report that our team has qualified to
represent Dorset at the
Inter-County competition in Gloucestershire on
Sunday 22nd March! They will be competing against
the counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, Jersey &
Guernsey, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Avon.
Good luck to Claudia, Hal,
Lilly and Ella!
Spring Term Camp
Cubs and Scouts spent the first weekend of half term
on a three night camp at Butchers Coppice. They
made pizzas, climbed the tower, cooked a two course
meal for the leaders, played games in the dark, shot
air rifles and used a map and compass to hike around
White Sheet Plantation.
Awards Night
Our first big event this year to celebrate our 10 year
anniversary is our Awards Night on Saturday 28th
March. We’ll be recognising our young people with
the awards they’ve worked towards over the last year.
This is the first year that we will have held an Awards
Night but we hope that it will annually become one
of our biggest night in Scouts. They’ve helped in the
community, learnt new skills, planned and gone on
challenging expeditions. They’ll be bursting with pride.
If anyone can donate just a small raffle prize it will make a big difference.
The funds we raise will mean we can offer more activities and more
opportunities to more young people. If you can offer us a prize, then please
email me on [email protected]. It will be so appreciated.

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg, especially when it’s yours!

March 2020, Winter is receding and Spring is virtually upon us. It is still a long time until Easter so keep

wrapped up and ignore any warm days we might get.
Last year we bought ourselves a book published by DK called ‘Allotment Month by Month’ it can be bought
on the internet for £6.99 and is just so useful.
Meanwhile here are some other jobs you can be getting on with this month.
• If you covered up your Rhubarb like I explained in January, you should be able now to harvest young, pink,
sweet Rhubarb. If you cook it like a compote it is Soooo Gooood on your breakfast cereals.
• If you still like Brussel Sprouts you might just find a few to enjoy now, especially with some Roast Lamb.
• You can still be pulling Parsnips and making tasty Celeriac with mash Potatoes. Good with Lamb too and
Mint Sauce (do remember to put a bit of sugar in the mix).
• Before planting and sowing anything outside and before anything pokes
its’ head out do give the ground a good spread of general fertilizer. Such as
Bonemeal, Blood, Fish and Bonemeal, Seaweed Concentrate or Growmore.
• The First Early Potatoes you started Chitting in early February could now
be planted. As can Shallots and Garlic.
• Finish all winter pruning on:- Gooseberries, Blackcurrants, Blueberries
and Autumn Raspberries if you haven’t done so already.
• Most importantly, do prepare your beds and seed bed ready for the
planting and sowing season.
• Rake up and discard any stubborn weeds that have survived the winter.

If you like gardening and want to buy seeds, fertilisers, compost, insecticides, canes, fleece, netting and
other sundries at prices much less than on the high street. Why not become an Associate Member of

North Bournemouth Allotment Society, Cornelia Road, BH10 4FG. It costs £2.00 per calendar year and
you can join any Saturday or Sunday between 10. a.m. and 12 noon at the site office.

Wow! So much to do in April in the garden and allotment, let’s get stuck in right away.
If you haven’t got them on yet you should get your skates on now.

In the Garden

Keep weeds under control, especially on flower beds <> Protect fruit blossom from
hungry birds
Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds <> ncrease the water given to houseplants
Apply a general-purpose fertiliser to borders and beds. <> Put supports in place for
climbing & rambling Roses, herbaceous plants, peonies, other heavy flowering blooms
and perennials before they get too large. Criss-cross strings from hidden or decorative
posts also works wel <> Remove faded daffodil and tulip flowers, nipping off the heads
and seed pods <> Apply chemical or biological control if vine weevil larvae damage or
wilting is evident (Available from garden centres locally & Wilko’)

On the Allotment

Plant out second early potatoes in the first half of the month. Maincrop potatoes in the second half.
Sow outdoors for beetroot, carrots, Swiss chard, summer cauliflower, lettuce, leeks, radish, turnip, spring and
pickling onions, peas and perpetual spinach in well-prepared soil. Dwarf French Beans and Sweet Corn under
cloches later in month <> Sow indoors for marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squash, sweet peppers, tomatoes,
cucumbers, aubergines, celery, celeriac, salads and globe artichokes <> Sow a seedbed of sprouting broccoli,
cauliflowers and cabbages for planting out in June or July <> Thin out rows of seedlings as soon as they are
large enough to be handled <> Plant shallots, onion sets and Asparagus crowns <> Support pea plants with
sticks, twigs, green support or wire netting <> Protect early outdoor sowings with fleece and polythene.

Winton Waitrose raises over £400 for lymphoma charity

On the 4 February, Lymphoma Action were delighted to be awarded
with a cheque for £410 from Waitrose in Winton, after being nominated
as one of three chosen good causes as part of the branch’s Community
Matters scheme.

Every month, customers who visit the store are able to choose between
three organisations that they would like to support by placing a token
they receive at the checkout into one of the three Community Matters
boxes allocated to that month’s chosen good causes. October’s Commu-
nity Matters good causes included Lymphoma Action, the only charity in
the UK dedicated to supporting anyone affected by lymphoma.

“We are so grateful to Waitrose in Winton for nominating us as part of the Community Matters scheme, and to
all of the customers who have shown their support” says Sarah Thorn, Community and Partnerships Manager
at Lymphoma Action. “Every 27 minutes one of us is diagnosed with lymphoma, making it the fifth most com-
mon cancer in the UK. Through funds raised by initiatives like this, we can continue to make sure everyone
affected by the condition receives the best possible information, support, treatment and care so that no one has
to face lymphoma alone.”

About Lymphoma Action

• Founded by patients in Haddenham in 1986, Lymphoma Action is the UK’s only charity dedicated to lym-

phoma, the UK’s fifth most common cancer.

• Our services include a Freephone helpline, support group network, buddy service, medical information,

conferences for those affected by lymphoma, and education and training for healthcare professionals.

About Lymphoma

• Every year, more than 19,500 new cases of lymphoma are identified in the UK alone, making it the UK’s

fifth most common cancer. Around 125,000 people are currently living with lymphoma.

• Lymphoma is the most common cancer in teenagers and young adults.

• At least 60 types and sub-types of lymphoma are currently described.

• Every 27 minutes a friend or loved one is diagnosed with lymphoma.

• Symptoms include a lump in the neck, armpit or groin; feeling worn-out for no reason, unexplained weight

loss, excessive sweating at night, constant itching for no reason.

• If you are concerned that you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or you are worried about any aspect

of your health, visit your GP. For more informationn : https://lymphoma-action.org.uk

Security Systems I.T Support

Hedgecock Enterprises was born from a 25+ year I.T career and the
realisation that being active, helping people with everyday life tasks and not
being constantly engaged with technology is good for people and myself.

Having lived with ADHD since childhood and excelled at every hurdle set
ahead of me including a background in the British army, government and
security and being faced with the constant disappointment of tradesmen
that I had engaged with, Hedgecock Enterprises was formed.
(Attention deficit ONLY in tasks I find uninteresting, which are the tasks
I do not perform. All other times, closer to hyperfocus)

Having a long history of ensuring attention to detail in every industry I
have worked in, operating as a handyman I’m capable of all the above
tasks. I’m friendly, chatty and very hardworking but I must be constantly
busy otherwise I feel distressed and anxious.

Because of how I am “wired” I learn tasks at a very fast pace which is
why I am so multiskilled. Also, I only need to sleep for 4hrs per day which
ensures that I am able to operate in a capacity greater than my colleagues
and peers.
