Re-discovering Lyme Regis...

I recently enjoyed a much-needed short break from
work, and took a holiday cottage near Lyme Regis,
in West Dorset. A staycation in the beautiful English
countryside, above this popular small resort by the
sea. This is walking country with spectacular coastal
scenery.
Lyme Regis is an historic town made famous by the
story and film of The French Lieutenant’s Woman
which stared Meryl Streep. It’s is also renowned because of Mary Anning, and her fossil findings. A
harbour resort with a bevy of colourful boats, small brightly coloured streets, and the famous Cobb. All
surrounded with a sweep of green hills, and coastline that stretches for miles.
A cottage is a good base, and ours was comfortable with caring attentive owners – but we needed a car
as it was above Lyme Regis. Handy to drive along the coast in both directions with Portland, West Bay
and the Jurassic coast one way, and Devon with Honiton, Sidmouth and Beer in the other. At this point of
Dorset, you are within touching distance of both Devon and Somerset, so it makes for a wide choice of
things to do and places to see. Forde Abbey Is also nearby.
But I enjoyed exploring the local farmland, and rolling countryside down into Lyme bay, with a network
of local footpaths, bridle ways, The wide sweeps of coast (and for those who like to explore further – this
is part of the South West Coast Path ) as you dip down into the town and the quaint backstreets, riverside
walk to the front. In October it was still busy – a point worth remembering in high summer when it is
packed. Parking is tight also – and be warned they use a well-known parking App widely in this area of
Dorset, or coins. Not being able to use notes, or cards to pay, can be frustrating.
I’d been to Lyme Regis briefly once before, and really enjoyed having the time to discover it more,
because it’s a pretty seaside resort with plenty of self-catering properties around, lots of eateries, good
independent shops, there are Museums, boat hire, and a good sized beach with others nearby. Wider and
sandy towards the Cobb – the beach narrowed to a cobbly strip that led along the front towards the town
centre. Sitting on the wall facing the Cobb with locally renowned takeaway Fish and Chips in the autumn
sunshine was a treat. You had to be careful and ward off the seagulls, but I grew up in Devon and am
always prepared for this when at the seaside in the UK.
I am biased because I love this part of the coastline – and feel it’s a good base for a truly relaxing
holiday. The UK has a lot to offer, which I plan to discover more over the next few years and write a blog
on. Staycations have been popular with our clients since the Pandemic started – and I’ve booked quite a
few the last 18 months as people re-discovered our own country.
So - if you are still wary, or fed up, with the thought of all the red tape involved with travelling overseas,
why not consider a cottage rental and let us show you the delights of the UK. They are ideal for a short
break.

Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...

Steve via email asks:
Hi Aunty, I have had a Hotmail address for over 20 years and recently it seems to be
called Outlook?? Now I seem to be getting a lot more dodgy looking emails which get
sent to my junk box that are obvious scams and pretending to be from banks. Recently
I had one supposedly from The HMRC offering me a tax rebate but the spelling was
so awful that it was obviously suspicious. I always mark them as spam and then they
automatically disappear from my inbox but recently I’m getting concerned that these
scammers seem to have more and more of my private personal information so what
happens to the emails? Does my email or Internet provider report them? because as
they automatically go into my junk inbox I can’t see any way of forward them to the
banks etc to alert them as to what is going on.
Aunty Says:
Hello Steve. I’m not sure how Microsoft & Hotmail currently deal with their customers’
spam problems, but I’m sure there is a setting somewhere that will help you flag and
report any particularly nasty emails as spam. In Gmail there is a “report spam”
option that will alert Google and hopefully they follow it up and do something about
it. Policing this kind of thing is a nightmare but there’s now plenty of cases in the news
where companies are getting heavily fined for spamming and abusing people’s private
and personal information, but outside of the UK, EU and USA nobody seems to care
that much
Martin from Bournemouth asks:
Hello Aunty, 3 months ago I treated myself to a new laptop and recently I am receiving
notification that the trial version of my McAfee Livesafe program has expired. I don’t
remember signing up for a free trial and I don’t know if I should pay, if it is safe to do
this over the internet or just ignore it. What do you recommend? I am fairly new to
computers so please explain in basic language
Aunty Says:
Hello Martin. The free trial from MacAfee was probably pre-installed on your laptop.
I’m a big fan of the free Window Security app that comes pre-bundled with Windows 10,
and to be extra safe I strongly recommend having a separate antispyware app like the
free Malwarebytes. Uninstall everything to do with McAfee by clicking on the Windows
icon (bottom left) and choose “Settings” “Apps”.

If you have any computer related problems then email me at
[email protected] and I will see what I can do.

Did you hear about the junkie that was addicted to brake fluid and Crystal Meth?
He said he could stop anytime.

Covid 19 and our continuing commitment to you.

Properties are in high demand and often don’t even reach the websites, so if
you have something in mind, contact us to register your details and we will
let you know if we have something which might suit your requirements.
We have an extensive list of clients on the lookout for certain types of
properties so if you are thinking of selling call us for a free valuation and we
may have just the buyer in mind you are hoping for.

It is still very important to contain the spread of this virus and we wish to
reassure you that we will continue to take all necessary precautions when
conducting viewings, valuations and instructions to minimise any risk to
vendors and prospective purchasers alike and yes.. ourselves.

Bearing this in mind please note that will only arrange, or consent to,
viewings of properties, whether they be occupied or vacant, if you are in a
strong position to proceed with a purchase. In other words, a first time buyer
with a mortgage agreed, cash buyer or that you have accepted an offer on the
sale of your own property.

Before requesting to view any of our properties please take time to look at the
full details available on the websites, make good use of the internet to look at
the location, use Google earth to get an overhead view and the street view to
get a proper understanding of where and what it is you are actually enquiring
about. This does sound obvious but you wouldn’t believe the number of times
we meet someone at a property only to be told “We didn’t realise it was here!”

Whatever the circumstances we will continue to maintain a commitment to
all our clients, current and new, to provide the best support and advice to
make the sale or purchase of your property as trouble free as we can.

Winton and Moordown Traders unite to become BH9 Business Community
We are very excited to announce that Winton and Moordown Traders have combined forces
and re-branded as BH9 Business Community (BH9) in order that our very long High Street
(Wimborne Road) gets the attention it so deservedly needs from local government. Emma
Martineau (Chair) and Carly Webster (Vice-Chair) are confident that uniting the 2 trading districts
will benefit high street businesses, those operating off the high street as well as people who now
work from home. In addition, Emma and Carly are convinced that the whole community will
benefit from the plans that they have for improving our area.
Additionally, as part of the Government’s initiative to support the High Street post Covid,
Bournemouth Chamber of Trade & Commerce (BCTC) has been awarded a one-off Grant to
re-develop or launch Trading Districts within the conurbation and this will directly benefit BH9.
BCTC President Jacqui Rock said “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to support businesses that
are not currently part of the local BID campaigns, helping them create exciting synergy together
and developing the area.”
Emma and Carly added, “We urge businesses in Winton and Moordown to support this initiative
by supporting the role of BCTC and joining BH9 in developing our community of like-minded
businesses and professionals all based in the same geographical area. Without the area working
together we simply cannot develop this, and it is such a fantastic opportunity to use this one-off
funding to help BH9 thrive. We must pull together for a better BH9.”

BCTC Trade Group Liaison Officer Wendy King commented “Meeting local businesses in BH9
and seeing how they are keen to work together to improve the area and put Winton and
Moordown back on the map is inspirational. We have some very enthusiastic individuals to make
this happen.”

BH9 is holding a Mulled Wine evening for businesses interested in being involved on Thursday 2
December 2021 at St John’s Church, Moordown from 6pm onwards. Businesses are encouraged
to contact Emma and Carly on [email protected] for more details on the 2nd December event and for
information on BCTC contact Wendy [email protected].

“Bowled Over By Bob The Builder”

Builder Bob Atkins 70, from Poole joined
Slimming World in August
2020 with a starting weight of
16stone 11 1/2lb at 5ft 10” tall.
He was struggling with his health, having to take 3 tablets
daily to help control his high blood pressure, and finding it a
real effort to undertake his 2 passions; walking and playing
bowls.. Following an appointment with his GP he was
referred to LiveWell Dorset.

Bob took on the 12 week referral programme and joined Nat Fabry’s group in
Moordown, Bournemouth where he attended group every week , embracing
Image Therapy , and going home experimenting with new recipes with his
very supportive wife Pat . Bob loves Indian curries but said “with the ideas
you pick up in group, the receipes on the website to refer to I was able to make
simple swaps to recreate some of my favourites Indian dishes using free foods!
I was also bowled over to learn that I could still enjoy my roast dinners on a

Sunday – who knew that swapping oil for frylight could mean
that I could still tuck into roast potatoes!’
Bob reached his personal target weight during his 12 week
referral losing an amazing 2st 11 ½ lbs and 10” from his waist,
dropping several sizes in trousers!. He said “My GP is delighted
with my progress and so am I! I can’t believe that losing
weight can make such a difference to your health and I’m now
medication free!. Not only that but I can really embrace my love
of walking and there’s no better place to do that than the Jurassic
coast, I can walk for miles. My bowling has improved too, much
to the delight of my fellow team mates at Poole Park Bowling Club!”
Bob continues to follow the Slimming World extra easy plan, where nothing
is banned, he said “I really enjoy group with the sharing, support and
encouragement from Nat and all the other members, I couldn’t have done it on
my own “
With his increased confidence and belief in himself Bob decided to lower his
target, reaching a final weight of 13stone 4 ½ lbs in December 2020.
With nearly a year at target Bob will soon be achieving his Diamond Target
Award and we couldn’t be prouder of him.

Chiropody is the old term for treatment by a

a common term, used all over the world,
for treatment by a foot health professional.
