It was Christmas Day, the family all together. Harry was in the garden
with his brother and Dad having a rare cigar. Th ey were discussing what gifts
they had given and received. “What did you get Harry?” his Dad asked. “I’d
dropped hints for one of those Iphones and it worked” he replied. “Th ey’re
brilliant. You can do internet and movies and photographs and just about
anything”. “Can you make phone calls?’ his brother joked but Harry ignored
the jibe. “For the two boys I got them an Ipad each. Th ey’re better than books
you know, and for young Sally, I got her an Ipod, she loves her music.”
“What did you get for your missus then Harry? said his Dad. “Something
special I hope?” “I’m not sure about that” Harry replied. She hasn’t opened it
yet”. “What was it then? “Well, I got her one of those Irons.

12 Travel Feature -
Majorca in Autumn...

By Mags Addison
Ever thought of a few days in Majorca in mid to late October? Neither
had I – until I tried it a few weeks ago. And it turned out to be a relaxing
few days away. I even went sunbathing and swimming. And getting there? I
don’t often make enough use of our local airports here in the south. So the
idea was to keep is easy and stress-free because it was a short break.
The fl ight from Southampton was with Flybe. I’d never fl own from
Southampton before, so was keen to give this a go also. It’s a great little
airport with 2 restaurants, money exchange, etc. And easy to get too by train, or by car. There is also a
Premier Inn next door. Flybe was also a fi rst for me. And it was a good fl ight! Because this is a smaller
plane with no seat back TV’s the captain kept us updated throughout the journey. Easy to forget that touch
in the modern era of huge planes and long haul travel.
I’d booked a private transfer from Palma Airport, which was such a speedy way to get to the
resort - Portals Nous, and a small boutique hotel in a quiet residential area. The 3-star Costa Portals Hotel
turned out to be much better than I thought it would be, modern and clean. They say your holiday hangs
on the room you have - and mine was a pleasant surprise. I was given a top (4th) fl oor double room, no
balcony but a window that opened with a good view of the villas around - hilly residential area. And it had
a lovely big bathroom with a walk in shower!
Portals Nous it has to be said, is mainly hilly. And while the hotel pool was tempting, the
coastline beckoned - and there was a beautiful little cove about 5 minutes’ walk away – steep hill to climb
back afterwards, so the area is not suitable for those who may be less mobile. But the walks were worth it.
Majorca is dotted with coves and beaches fringed by green trees, and wonderful coastal scenery, so a day
spent sunbathing and swimming, and taking costal walks is relaxing.
I loved relaxing by the water’s edge, with just the murmur of voices and the lapping of the sea
for company. It was very peaceful - with the odd sea birds swimming by. And children playing in the sea. Have your
So it would be ideal to spend a month here chilling, swimming and walking. cushions
Later, it was time to negotiate that hill and hit happy hour at the hotel and maybe a Sangria. lost their
That evening, a nice cooked meal in a restaurant at the nearby village resort was a perfect way to round
off the day. It was even warm enough to sit outside to eat in short sleeves – such a bonus. Oomph?
Next day I sat up on a headland overlooking the main Portals Nous beach and Marina, just loving the
coastline here. Later on I found the main Marina at Puerto Portals - very
posh. Lots of restaurants and shops. Great for day or evening.
Majorca in mid-October has been an eye opener. I’ve never
thought of coming so late in the past - thinking it would been end of season.
Too empty, or the weather not good! Instead it’s been relaxing with plenty
of people around. The weather has been nicely warm. People are on the
beaches and in the sea.

“Caring for your feet in the winter”

As we enter the cold winter months, it’s
extremely important to keep ourselves warm.
To do this, we normally wear extra clothes and
gloves on our hands. But, it’s also essential we
keep our feet warm. One of the most common
problems which can occur during colder
weather are chilblains. These are small, itchy
swellings on the skin which occur as a reaction
to cold temperatures. In this article, we will
provide some information on chilblains and
how to prevent them.

Chilblains usually occur several hours after exposure to the cold as
a result of blood vessels narrowing and widening too quickly. When
this happens, blood can leak into the surrounding tissue and this is
believed to be reason for the swelling and itchiness. In extreme cases,
the skin may break and blisters may develop. It is very important to
try not to scratch the area as the skin can easily break, leading to a
possible infection.

Fortunately, chilblains are quite easy to prevent as long as you follow
these tips. The obvious thing to do to prevent chilblains is by limiting
your exposure to the cold. You can wear thick socks or long johns to
improve the circulation to the feet and try and avoid wearing tight
shoes as they can restrict the circulation. Warming your shoes on the
radiator before wearing them allows them to dry and eating at least
one hot meal a day has a fantastic warming effect across the whole
body. Finally, moisturising your feet every day stops your feet from
becoming dry and prevents the skin from cracking.

If you have any concerns about your feet or would like to know more
about preventing chilblains, then please do not hesitate to give us a
ring and make an appointment.

Jacko decided that an appropriate Christmas gift for his wife would be a
bottle of perfume. Nothing too expensive or overstated mind, just something
simple and discrete. So he went to a local store and located the cosmetics
department. “I would like to buy some perfume for my wife,” he told the shop
assistant. “Certainly sir.” she replied. “Do you have anything particular in
mind?” “Not really.” he said “but nothing very expensive.”
“I understand sir. Well, what about this one?” “How much does it cost?”
“Th is one is sixty pounds sir” “Th at’s too expensive for me.” he moaned.
“Very well sir. How about this?” “What’s the price?” he asked.
“Forty pounds sir.” “What else have you got?” he enquired.
“Well, there’s this small bottle at twenty pounds.” “Look here.” he replied,
“What I’m really looking for is something really cheap.” Th e shop assistant
looked Jacko straight in the eyes, picked up a mirror from the counter and
held it up to his face and said. “Th is is as cheap as you can get sir.”
...................
A reindeer walked into a pub, strolled up to the bar and ordered a pint of
lager. Completely un-phased, the barman poured out the lager and passed it
to the reindeer, who paid with a ten pound note.
As he handed over £3.50 change, the barman said “I have to say, you’re the
fi rst reindeer I’ve seen in here.” Th e reindeer looked at his change and said.
“At these prices I’m also the last reindeer you’re going to see in here!”

Independent Estate Agents & Valuers

ASK THE AGENT...

Q: Is there any point putting my home on the market before Christmas, or should I wait
until the New Year?

A: As a general rule, there is nothing to be gained by waiting before putting your
home on the market. Assuming that you are looking to sell in order to buy somewhere
else, the swings and roundabouts principle always applies – whatever the state of the
market.

That said, Christmas is the one real exception. Quite frankly, there is no point rushing
to market too close to the start of the festive season. At that time, just about everybody
has other things on their minds than looking at properties – properties which, with
even the best will in the world, they won’t be able to move into before the New Year.

However…far from just sitting on your hands until the turkey carcass fi nally bites the
dust, you can always turn this enforced lull to your advantage by putting everything in
place, so that you can hit the ground running immediately the festive season is over. In
fact, this is just plain common sense – but it’s particularly true in the current climate.
However buoyant the market is, you need to take advantage of anything that could give
you even the slightest edge.

The key thing, of course, is to do your research, select your estate agent carefully and
instruct them. Most agents are going to have quite a lot of time to spare over the two
or three weeks leading up to Christmas, so your chosen fi rm should be perfectly able
to get everything ready for a New Year marketing blitz – from commissioning your
Energy Performance Certifi cate, taking good-quality photographs and preparing
marketing materials, to advising you on any little things you can do to improve the
buyer-appeal of your home.

The net result of all this is that you will be ideally placed to take the fullest possible
advantage of the increase in market activity which invariably follows the Christmas
lull. And don’t forget, the further you are down the road to selling your current home,
the stronger position you’ll be in when it comes to striking a deal on the next one.

All in all then, a little preparation now -
and you could be in line for a very happy New Year indeed!

Hi, I’m Pasha an 8 year old Sharpie who loves sleeping,
cuddles and a nice cup of tea. I can however be very
stubborn and as I’m very strong would need to be with
a family with plenty of space and children of secondary
school age or above. I am generally a good boy but
am a bit shy of people at fi rst, especially men but once
I get to know you, you will have a very loving boy.
Unfortunately I am not that way with other animals so I
would need to be the only pet in the house hold.
With Christmas fast approaching please come to our
Christmas and Craft fair. It is in the Barrington centre
Ferndown on Sat 17th Dec. Details on our website.
If you would like to buy our dogs a Christmas prezzie
they would love Schmackos, Bonios, Dental sticks or Gravy Bones please.
(no highly coloured treats). We also have the Waggy Tails offi cial calendar
available in our shops and our offi ce.
Thank you and have a lovely Christmas and a very happy new year.

surrounded by 400 squares.” One grandchild said, “I know where it is,” and found
it. Where was it?

At a monastery high in the mountains, the monks have a rigid vow
of silence. Only at Christmas, and only by one monk, and only with one
sentence, is the vow allowed to be broken.
One Christmas, Brother Th omas is allowed to speak and he says, “I like the
mashed potatoes we have with the Christmas turkey!” and he sits down.
Silence ensues for 365 days.
Th e next Christmas, Brother Michael gets his turn, and he says “I think the
mashed potatoes are lumpy and I hate them!”
Once again, silence for 366 days (it’s leap year). Th e following Christmas,
Brother Paul rises and says, “I am fed up with this constant bickering!”
...........................
It was the last court session before Christmas and the judge was in a merry
mood as he asked the prisoner, “What are you charged with?” “Doing my
Christmas shopping early Yer Honour”, replied the defendant. “Th at’s no
off ence”, said the judge. “How early were you doing this shopping?”
“Before the store opened.”

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg especially, when it’s yours!

Gardening Tips for December
As the days are so short whatever you are planning to do in the garden
in December, you will not be out for long, but weather permitting
there are some positive things you can be doing.
• Check your winter protection structures are sound.
• Check your greenhouse heater works. X
• Place a net cover over your pond for protection against Herons.
• If the water doers freeze you can melt a hole with a hot saucepan.
• If you have fi sh in the pond, never hit the ice to break it up.
• Ensure your precious pot plants are well protected.
• If you intend growing Brassicas next season, spread a thin layer of lime over the chosen area.
• Sow any winter salad and large onion seeds now.
• Lightly dig over your borders and cover with a good layer of compost mulch for protection.
The garden birds will love you as they take the much needed grubs and insects.
• Harvest any remaining root crops or winter cabbage, keep off the lawn.
Above all, have yourself a very Happy Christmas.

If you live in Bournemouth and would like to grow your own fresh fruit and vegetables
whilst keeping fi t and healthy. Then come and see us at North Bournemouth Allotments in
Cornelia Road, Wallisdown. We are open every Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 12.00
noon and you will get a warm welcome from our very friendly group of volunteers.
We have Full Plots for under £40.00 per year. Half Plots for just over £20.00 per year. Just
call in and see us, we look forward to seeing you.
Gardening Tips for January
Let us look forward to a rewarding 2017. Without doubt January is the coldest month of winter, yet
there are things we can do. We can do some preparation jobs and look after our wildlife who are having
a harder time than we are at this time.
• Get out your hand tools and machinery, clean them up, sharpen and straighten. Do make sure any
petrol motors are lubricated and still operate.
• Clear up and open up any ground, collect any winter debris from your lawn also. This will allow
the frost to get in and kill off unwanted bugs.
• Keep house plant watering to a minimum.
• Ensure any small trees and bushes are well staked and tied to avoid damage from strong winter winds.
• If you have stored any Dahlia tubers, check that they are not rotting and if so remove the damaged
tubers.
• Winter wash any fruit trees. Prune Gooseberries, Currants, Apples and Pears.
• Enjoy your winter vegetables (Parsnips, Leeks, Brussells and Turnips) if you can dig them out.
• Look after the wildlife:
• Put out clean, fresh food regularly both hanging and on the ground. Do not leave old feed lying around
it brings in unwanted wildlife, and keep a fresh water supply for drinking at ground level.
• Plan you spring planting. Select which seeds you will want. I know it hurts to throw away seed but
fresh seed will always produce better crops.

Project Indigo
One boy’s adventure through time and space!

Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com
If you are a regular reader you will know that my usual
adventures are based on Doctor Who however on this
special occasion I will be writing about a local Powerchair
Football team called The Wessex Warriors. Powerchair
Football is a competitive 4 player team sport for people
with physical disabilities who use power wheelchairs to
play football. The game is played indoors on a regulation
basketball court and is very fast-paced. Two teams
compete to score goals against one another.
Wessex Warriors are the first Powerchair Football Club
in Dorset and the team train at the Victoria Education
Centre in Poole. The team is open to both sexes and all
ages. Currently the team is made up of players between
the ages of 5 and 43 and their Team Captain is Liam Drummond. I was recently invited to a
training session to meet the team and experience zooming around in a Powerchair.

Each training session starts with a reminder of the team’s motto ‘Discipline and Respect’
then the players start their drills practicing the sport’s skills such as ball control and
accuracy. I got to watch the footballers then it was my chance to try out a Powerchair for
myself. It was very zippy!
First I practiced passing the ball with Liam, then I tried spinning the chair which increases
power behind the ball. You move the ball by hitting it with a bumper on the front of the
chair. The top speed of the chair is 6 miles per hour which is pretty fast in a small space.
The ball is 2-3 times bigger than a regular football. I wasn’t the only newbie trying out that
day, The Mayor of Poole, Councillor Xena Dion, had also come along to meet the team and
find out more about the sport so we had fun learning the basics together.
The team are progressing rapidly and represent Dorset in the South East Powerchair
Football League. There are over 700 players in the country and they have the opportunity
to ascend the ranks and play nationally and internationally - the next FIPFA World Cup
will be held in Florida in 2017 and 27 different
countries will compete. Powerchair Football could
even be a Paralympic Sport by 2020.
Thank you to the Wessex Warriors for letting me
come along and learn about this amazing sport, I
had a great time.

If you are interested in finding out more about
the team, or have a physical disability and would
like to play Powerchair Football, please visit their
website www.wessexwarriors.co.uk

Thank you for reading and I hope you will join me again for my next
Doctor Who adventure.

A considerable amount of strategic planning is required to ensure that
maximum effect is gained from sending Christmas cards. Timing, size and
quality are of paramount importance.
Sending Christmas cards too early is not only ineffective but can be
humiliating for the sender. It reveals one’s position, discloses the size and
quality of card, exposing oneself to the possibility of a devastating counter-
attack. On the other hand, a late Christmas card risks negating the recipient’s
ability to respond, and reduces one’s total card count.
It’s certainly better to be on the early rather than late side, for the get-in-quick
Christmas card sets the pace and compels the opposition to reply. It is a brave
opponent who will respond with a less than an equal-to or better-than card.
The next thing to understand is the value of size in Christmas cards.
Important people, (or people who think they are important), send big and
important looking Christmas cards. This makes the recipient feel small, which
is precisely what was intended. This can be quite costly, but usually worth it.
There is also a place for cheap and nasty cheap Christmas cards. They imply
bad taste, poverty or disrespect to the recipient, and will guarantee deletion
from their Christmas card list. These are particularly effective for terminating
pointless long term Christmas card exchanges with people like the Roberts
who you met in Torremolinos in 1986, and can’t even remember what they
look like anymore, (or was it Benidorm?)
First-time Christmas cards sent on impulse to recent acquaintances should be
avoided, for they can have devastating consequences, like those nice Watson
people you met in Benidorm this year. Whilst it might be a nice surprise to get
a lovely card in return, you might not be very pleased when they arrive at your
front door on Boxing Day, (or was it Torremolinos?)
