Welcome to the March 2021 issue of The Local Eye

A year on from our first lockdown, who would have
thought it would have turned out the way it has. However,
the news is beginning to look positive, the vaccine rollout
is continuing fast and there is good news that the current

restrictions will be eased towards the end of this month.
It’s not over yet though so we need to remain careful.

Please stay safe, stay well!

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg, especially when it’s yours!

I had my jab on Saturday 6th. February. Covid 19 & Lockdown are still full on. For those of you
who have had their jab or 2 by the time you read this, I hope all goes well in your life.
But we cannot stand about, our new crops, fruit and flowers for 2021 need us.
The weather has been so cold during February, you might find yourself a bit behind. So if you
have not done the following jobs then do them now.
Prepare your vegetable & seed beds. If you are a couple of weeks late, plant your seeds anyway,
they will almost certainly catch up. Start chitting your seed potatoes.
Prune back Wisteria and any conservatory climbing plants.

March with its warmer days is the time to get started setting seeds,
tidying up borders, cutting back winter shrubs. Pruning Autumn
Raspberries (this is your last chance), Blue Berries, Goose Berries and
any week stems of Tay & Blackberry. Give all soft fruit a top dressing of
Sulphate of Potash, general fertilizer such as Growmore and mulch around the base. Remove the
top layer of compost and replace with new.
Plant Shallots, Onion sets, Early Potatoes. Plant Summer flowering bulbs like Gladioli and
Dahlias tubers when there is no risk of frost.
If you are planning to grow Asparagus for the first time, do it now and follow the suppliers
planting advice to ensure success. Here at North Bournemouth Allotments my wife and I planted
1 year old Asparagus crowns in 2015 and 2020 was our best crop ever. So you have to be patient
but if you have established plants? Just go with steaming and dripping with butter or try wrapping it in
bacon or dry cured ham before baking it in a rich cheesy sauce.

April, and Easter Sunday is the 4th. It’s not the start of summer but we could have a warm spell.
Sow outdoors for beetroot, carrots, Swiss chard, summer cauliflower, lettuce, leeks, radish, turnip, spring and
pickling onions, peas and perpetual spinach in well-prepared soil. Dwarf French Beans and Sweet Corn under
cloches later in month. Sow indoors for marrows, courgettes, pumpkins, squash,
sweet peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, celery, celeriac and salads. Sow a
seedbed of sprouting broccoli, cauliflowers and cabbages for planting out in June or
July.
Well that is enough of vegetables, what about a flower border that will be your joy
and the envy of your neighbours? Whether it is foliage or flowers, there are hundreds
of flowers you can set from seed in April.
It is probably best to sow your seeds indoors in modules or trays as per the seed
supplier’s instructions. Whilst these are germinating you should prepare the ground you intend to plant them.
Consider the colour and height combinations for your borders. Some years ago I found a great wall chart on
line. It is still available by copying the link below into your internet search.
hub.suttons.co.uk/featured/cut-flower-wall-chart-and-growing-guide
If you are planning a new bed it is best to take a bit of time and effort in the preparation. You would be
disappointed later on to have a weed infested border, so dig them out by hand now. At this point cover the
ground with some black plastic. In doing this any remaining weeds will seek out the light and after a short
time you can peel back the plastic to uncover the white roots. You should clear them thoroughly. Flowers do
not require much fertilizer but a dressing of Blood, Fish & Bone together with a little Growmore will get your
new plants going.

Derek J.Rolls

Independent Estate Agents & Valuers

Covid 19 and our commitment to you.

At the time of writing this we were still under lockdown, but the latest news is
of the ‘road map’ to take us back to something resembling a normal life.
Also, at this time, Estate Agents were among those businesses permitted
to remain open, and although we may not be fully confident that this was
the right decision we have to bear in mind our clients, particularly with
the Stamp Duty holiday period coming to an end on 31st March and their
desire to get sales completed as soon as possible. (A possible extension still
uncertain at the moment).

We wish to reassure you that we take all necessary precautions when
conducting viewings, valuations and instructions to minimise any risk to
vendors and prospective purchasers alike and yes.. ourselves.

Bearing this in mind please note that will only arrange, or consent to,
viewings of properties, whether they be occupied or vacant, if you are in a
strong position to proceed with a purchase. In other words, a first time buyer
with a mortgage agreed, cash buyer or that you have accepted an offer on the
sale of your own property.

Before requesting to view any of our properties please take time to look at the
full details available on the websites, make good use of the internet to look at
the location, use Google earth to get an overhead view and the street view to
get a proper understanding of where and what it is you are actually enquiring
about. This does sound obvious but you wouldn’t believe the number of times
we meet someone at a property only to be told “We didn’t realise it was here!”

Whatever the circumstances we will continue to maintain a commitment to
all our clients, current and new, to provide the best support and advice to
make the sale or purchase of your property as trouble free as we can.

Please stay safe & well!

Is this the year of the Great British Holiday ?
By Mags Addison
*Everything up to date at the time of writing, but please be aware it is a fluid situation.

So, we have been given the much wished for roadmap out of lookdown -
a cautious approach to easing back towards normality. The vaccination
process is steaming ahead, infections are hopefully starting to come down,
and the end may be in sight. But we still have a cautious year ahead. During
this period when foreign travel restrictions mean venturing abroad is difficult
to consider – and thinking ahead is almost impossible, why not consider
looking at some home grown breaks instead. When restrictions on travel
within the British Isles will hopefully ease in time for early summer, and autumn.

Maybe, this is the year of the Staycation. If ever there was a time to explore our own shores and the
length and breadth of the UK – now is that time. A lot of travel suppliers have been concentrating on their
British products and have readily taken the opportunity to extend and showcase them. Never has there
been a better time to do this – maybe a shot in the arm to look within our own diverse, beautiful country,
than constantly heading elsewhere. At least for now.
I know most people say - we don’t have consistent weather in the UK!! So, the weather here isn’t easy to
predict - but let’s face it - we are British and used to that. But we do have lots to compensate here, with
our culture, local cuisines, beautiful countryside, and we don’t need passports, flight tickets, and entry forms
to consider. And there is SO much on offer?

Those options are inspirational whether you are a couple, family, solo, or friends. Whatever the occasion,
or even if there isn’t one – why not contemplate what is possible to do here. Self-drive, UK coach tours,
hotels, inns, lodges, cottages, cities, seaside, countryside, walking holidays, golfing breaks, train tours - so
much to do which can be Covid safe - and with flexible booking conditions.

I’ve been doing a series of great British breaks and staycations on my Facebook page, and website – and
used inspiration from some of the brilliant offers we’ve been given. Luxury private rentals for large groups
of family or friends on the coast, or rural retreats throughout the UK. Rented houses, lodges and cottages
of all budgets– taking from 2 people upwards. Floating lodges in Yorkshire, foodie stays and gourmet
weekends in the Cotswold’s, various rail touring trips, family resort holidays all over the South West.
Apartments, and hotel stays in our cities, wellness weekends, family tree houses, boating holidays, good
value weekend breaks in small hotels and Inns. Even a day trip aboard the luxury Belmont Express.
A luxury 3 days stay at Bovey Castle in Devon. And the Chewton Glen in Hampshire.

All this will hopefully help you with ideas to see our British Isles - and to be honest, it’s been an eye opener
to me discovering all these gems. The world of travel is always a learning curve for those of us working in
it. And I can’t wait to see some of it myself. As always, I’d be honest about what the options are, and give
up to date information, and advise, plus financial protection.

Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...

Chiropody / Podiatry

** WE ARE NOW OPEN AGAIN! **

AH Parfiit Chiropdy provides professional foot treatments for all the family

Chiropody / podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis
and treatment of the foot, ankle and lower leg
conditions, and there is no difference between a
chiropodist or a podiatrist. Chiropody is the old term
for treatment by a foot health professional but the
term podiatry is becoming increasingly used as it is
a common term, used all over the world,
for treatment by a foot health professional.

The team at AH Parfitt Chiropodry are registered with the Health Care
Professions Council and are members of the Society of Chiropodists and
Podiatrists, with extended scope of practice for ‘Foot Mobilisation’ and local
anaesthetic to carry out nail surgery.

There are many ailments and conditions that can be successfully treated by a
qualified chiropodist, these include: Aching and/or tired feet, Musckuloskeletal
problems, Biomechanical abnormalities of the foot and ankle, Flat feet and
fallen arches, Skin conditions, Corns and Callus, Verrucae and warts, Fungal
infections of the skin and nails, Diabetic foot health, Sports Injuries and
Paediatric (children’s) feet.

Common Problems

Athletes Foot - Verrucaes - Heel Pain - Corns and Calluses - Bunions
Ingowing Toenails - Plantar Fasciitis - Diabetic Foot Conditions
Hammer Toes - Fungal Nail Infections - Arthritis in the Feet

People with diabetes may be at risk of developing foot problems.
Therefore it is beneficial to be screened, at least annually, to
detect the presence of neuropathy, ischaemia
and/or foot deformities.

Bournemouth keyworker drove his weight
down and lost 4st in a year!

e At the beginning of last year, ambulance driver Craig Ballard was
struggling to transport patients on a stretcher, or from a wheelchair,
to their appointments and knew that losing weight would make it
easier.

slim for l eSo, in April 2020, the 26-year-old, from Bournemouth, decided to
join his local Slimming World group. Stepping on the scales after
withthe first week, Craig couldn’t believe he’d lost a staggering 10lb:
Slimming“I was chuffed to bits, I didn’t think I’d be able to eat so much food
including burgers, lasagne and all-day breakfasts and still lose
Worldweight, especially during the first lockdown!”
Craig attends his Slimming World group each week and
says the support and encouragement from his Consultant
Beckie Roberjot and the other members of his group has
without doubt been the key to successfully losing weight.
Craig says “The support of the group has been everything to
me, whether we’re meeting virtually, as we are at the minute,
or in person. We share recipe ideas and help each other
when we’ve had a challenging week. I cook everything from
scratch and batch cook at the weekends to help me during
the week. I’ve so much more energy and I can run up and
down the stairs at the hospital. In May 2020 I was a size XL
yet since October 2020 I’ve been back to a medium and
I feel great!”

Since losing weight, Craig has started walking a mile to and from Poole Hospital to work every day, and
slowly built up to running 5k on the treadmill most weeks. He’s also taking advantage of the BCP Beryl Bike
for key workers’ scheme.

Craig says, “Working for the NHS and seeing the impact of Covid-19, especially on overweight patients,
I feel lucky that I’ve turned my own health around.”

We’ve 50 years experience in helping and supporting members change their lives – for good! Why wait until
lockdown is over to get started on your weight loss dreams. Get in touch with your local Slimming World
Consultant today. You’ll be so happy that you did, because together, we really do make dreams come true!
