July 2016 History Spotlights...

Roald Amundsen (July 16, 1872 – c. June 18, 1928)
Amundsen was born to a family of Norwegian shipowners and captains in
Borge, between the towns Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg. His father was Jens
Amundsen. The fourth son in the family, his mother chose to keep him out of
the maritime industry of the family and pressured him to a doctor, a promise
that Amundsen kept until his mother died when he was aged 21, quitting
university for a life at sea. Amundsen had hidden a lifelong desire inspired
by Fridtjof Nansen’s crossing of Greenland in 1888 and the doomed Franklin
expedition. As a result, he decided on a life of exploration.
He worked aboard a merchant ship in the Arctic, prior to signing on as first
mate of the “Belgica”, the vessel that from 1897-1899 was the first to winter in
the Antarctic.
The experience he gained on these voyages gave Amundsen sufficient confidence to tackle a challenge
that had defied all navigators for 300 years, the Northwest Passage. Explorers had long been aware of the
existence of this passageway linking Europe with Asia, north of the North American continent, but no ship
had succeeded in sailing its entire length. In the summer of 1903 the “Gjøa” and its crew of six prepared to
make its way through the ice-ridden waters of the Northwest Passage.
The expedition was successful, and in August of 1906 the “Gjøa” broke through the final stretches of the
passageway. En route the men had also compiled a wealth of scientific data, the most important of which
concerned earth magnetism and observations of the exact location of the magnetic North Pole.
Encouraged by this early success Amundsen turned his attention to the North Pole. He planned to allow
his ship to freeze into the ice north of the Bering Strait, but financial backing was difficult to obtain. In
September 1909 came the news that the Americans Robert Peary and Frederick Cook had reached the Pole.
Amundsen then resolved to postpone his North Pole expedition and in the meanwhile to make a bid to reach
the South Pole ahead of Robert Falcon Scott, who was already on his way to the Antarctic as the head of a
large expedition. A telegram was despatched to Scott, with the news that the Norwegian expedition was
making for the Antarctic. The dramatic race that ensured continues to captivate audiences today.
On 19 October 1911 Amundsen left base camp with his four companions, four sledges, and 52 dogs.
Amundsen’s mission had only one goal; to reach the Pole, fast. Two months later this task was accomplished,
five weeks before Scott and his exhausted men arrived at the Pole to find Amundsen’s flag and tent.
The following year Roald Amundsen, together with Ellsworth and Italian Umberto Nobile, led an
expedition in the airship “Norge” (Norway) from Svalbard over the North Pole to Alaska.
For an explorer of Amundsen’s calibre, there were no great challenges left, but there was one thing he still
wished to do; to explore the Arctic Ocean by air. He carried out a daring expedition in two seaplanes, the
N24 and N25 in 1925. The planes had to crash land on the ice at 88 degrees north, but the team succeeded
in getting one of them airborne again and returned to Svalbard three weeks later. The following year Roald
Amundsen, together with Ellsworth and Italian Umberto Nobile, led an expedition in the airship “Norge”
(Norway) from Svalbard over the North Pole to Alaska. Arctic exploration was Amundsen’s whole life. It
was also to be his death. When, two years later, Nobile embarked on a second arctic flight aboard the sister
ship to the “Norge” -- the expedition disappeared. Amundsen joined a search party that set off to look for
it. A second search party found the airship and Nobile, alive. But Amundsen and his companions never
returned. His body was never found.

Contact The Elderly - Volunteer Drivers & Afternoon Hosts Required

Once a month on a Sunday afternoon local elderly people, who are without family in the area, are taken out
by volunteer car drivers for a little ride before going to the homes of volunteer hosts and hostesses for Sunday
afternoon tea.
We only ask our volunteer hosts to entertain up to six elderly people and two
drivers or one driver with up to three elderly people once or twice a year.
A downstairs cloakroom is a must.
Reserve drivers are always wanted when the regulars are unavailable. This
would be possibly two or three times a year.

Elderly people who would like to take part in one of these afternoons are
welcome to join the group but must be able to get in and out of a car, as we
can’t take zimmers or wheelchairs. There is no charge.

Last year, I had double glazing fi tted. This week, I got a call from
the contractor complaining that his work had been completed a
whole year and I had yet to pay for them. Just because I’m blonde
doesn’t mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I proceeded to tell
him just what his fast-talking sales guy had told me last year.
He said that in one year, the windows would pay for themselves.
There was silence on the other end of the line, so I just hung up,
and he hasn’t called back. Guess he was embarrassed.

Travel Feature -

Zante – the Green Island... By Mags Addison
I left the UK one grey, wet morning in early June – and 4 hours later arrived
in brilliant sunshine on the lush, green island of Zante. Or Zakynthos as
it’s known locally to the Greeks – Zante is actually the old Italian name. But
however this beautiful island is known, it was bliss to arrive.
There is no better recipe for making a holiday a success that going from
a rain-swept airport in the UK to a sunny one in the Mediterranean. You
instantly feel better and more relaxed. And who doesn’t like a holiday in
Greece when the weather at home is so bad.
Zakynthos is the most southerly of the Ionian Islands off mainland Greece, along with its better known sister Corfu,
and that other pearl Kefalonia – made famous by the book, and then film, of `Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’, and
smaller islands of Paxi and Lefkada.
I’ve long loved Corfu, so felt I would also enjoy Zante and I wasn’t disappointed. It is a beautiful place, with blue
skies, and turquoise seas. And so green – but it does rain in this part of Greece when out of season. I found it
idyllic, charming, and not altogether spoilt by modern day tourism. And the locals were so friendly.
This popular `Green’ island has a National Marine Park, beautiful beaches, farmlands, and vineyards. And of course
its famous for its loggerhead turtles – the island is an important nesting spot for them. They make great wine here,
and some of the restaurants we visited proudly sold their own local wine, along with the local olive oil and honey.
Not to mention locally caught fish.
We stayed in the friendly resort of Tsilivi with its sweeping sandy bay, and shallow waters. And I have to add – I
didn’t see any high rise hotels around our resort. So I think they have learnt from some of the mistakes of other
Mediterranean islands, which meant everything was low rise and more natural. Like Corfu – Zante is covered by
olive groves, and fruit trees like lemon and oranges are everywhere. The coastline is rugged in places – with peeps
of beautiful beaches and coves tucked way below.
Zante does have a lot of hidden treasures apart from the turtles, one of them being the wrecked boat on Smugglers
Bay at the top of the island. A much photographed icon, that features in a lot of brochures. We did a trip of the
more Secret Zante around the island and went to Xigia Beach, a natural sea spa further up the island and famous
for the Collagen and sulphur in its milky waters. We all clambered down the rocky cliffside and had a dip there!!
Then we had a delicious lunch at an authentically organic farm in the rural countryside, and experienced more of
the genuine friendliness of the island’s locals. We finished the day by going on to a local winery.
So it’s an island with a long and checkered history, its own organic produce,
rugged coastline, rural countryside, many beaches and coves, and lovely
sunsets. In early June, while the sea in Tsilivi beach was shallow, at this time
of year it is still bracing! Fine once you are in – but it is that getting yourself
in!! In September, I’m told, while we don’t have the long daylights hours of
May and June, but the seas are warmer. Maybe I should go back again?

Take care of your feet... Wearing sandals

Summer is here and we have cast off our winter shoes
and are into sandals again. Will last years sandals do
another season or do they look rather tired and worn?
Perhaps a trip to buy some new cool sandals is in order.
Choose a shoe shop that has trained staff who
understand shoe fitting to get the correct style and size
for your feet. Remember not to wear them out f the
shop, but to take them home and wear them indoors to
ensure they are comfortable and a good fit. Most stores
will allow you to exchange footwear if it has only been
worn indoors, but it is best to always check when purchasing.

The style of sandals is obviously a personal choice, but there
are features that can make a difference. If they are to be worn
for long periods then they should have a closed in back to
prevent calluses forming, and splits in the heels which can
be very painful.
The worst style for your feet is the wooden soled sandal that
only has a strap across the fore foot to keep it on, and the
wearer has to ‘claw’ their toes to keep them on.

The golden mule is the more closed in type of sandal, giving more support to your feet
which means at the end of the day you are less likely to have tired, aching feet. Sandals
provide ventilation helping to reduce perspiration and odour and make the feet feel more
comfortable.

Cotton socks, which are more absorbent than man-made materials, make all footwear
more comfortable by reducing rubbing and friction. Thank goodness wearing ‘trainer’
socks in sandals is not such a taboo anymore.

Foot Facts.
1. Each foot produces on average an egg cup full of
perspiration every day
2. 70% of foot problems are a direct result of ill fitting shoes
3. Leonardo da Vinci was absolutely spot on when he
described the foot as a masterpiece of engineering.

ASK THE EXPERT

Q....What issues do you need to consider if you’re selling this time of year?

A.... Somewhere around mid-July, the property market always slows a little. If you
are going away, leave a key and contact details with your agent so they can feed back
on viewings and any offers. Failing that, leaving a key with a family member, friend
or neighbour means you won’t risk missing the odd buyer who happens to be around in
high summer when you’re not!

This is also a good time to re-evaluate every aspect of your marketing. Timescale, for
example: from September to Christmas is a little less than 14 weeks - and a sale can
take at least 12 weeks from finding a buyer to handing over the keys, what is your
timescale? So, do you want to get moved before Christmas or aren’t you bothered?

Next price. This is the key determinant in selling anything, so it needs to be right.
If you are selling for say, £375,000, go onto one of the major portals and check
out properties in your general postcode area priced at £300-£450,000. Is yours the
most expensive property of its type? If so, you should have a serious talk with your
agent about the price. Also, I would avoid advertising in a price band, such as £450-
£500,000. More and more buyers want transparency in transactions. Price bands - and
devices like ‘offers in excess of’ - don’t help people decide where to pitch an offer.
Remember, you want to do everything you can to encourage offers, not discourage
them!

Similarly, does your property stand out online? First impressions are critical. Imagine
a buyer scrolling down a page of quite similar properties. What will get them to click
through to yours? Has the agent missed a really key feature in the heading? Is the
photograph the best one? Make sure you and your agent are singing from the same
hymn sheet.

Incidentally, some agents are targeted on the number of viewings they achieve, not the
quality. Nothing worse than a buyer with a walking stick turning up to view a 4th floor
flat without a lift! The moral: make sure your agent doesn’t simply qualify viewers by
price…

So, there you are. Once you’re confident that you’ve got all your ducks in a row, it’s
time to go and enjoy the beach!

Independent Estate Agents & Valuers

You may have seen us, but have you met us?
Derek Rolls...
One of the area’s most known and respected Estate Agents. Selling property
locally for over 30 years. Much business is from recommendation and most
of you will have either instructed Derek or know somebody whom he has
helped to move home! Derek has a very valued and sought after opinion on
the local market having experienced and worked through all it can throw. A
charitable chap who devotes much of his spare time to organisations helping
to help others. Currently, one of the sponsors of Moordown Bowls Club, we
are very proud to support a truly local Moordown club, a great community
facility involving many local residents.

Wendy Rolls...
We couldn’t do it without Wendy’s support. Mum and self proclaimed
C.E.O! From a Banking and Finance background fulfilling the admin role
and basically runs the place! Wendy will be there for anybody if needed
especially for those with four legs and a tail. As well as handling the day to
day challenges of a successful estate agency Wendy is voluntarily involved
with local animal search concerns. Her main passion is Dorset Search
Dogs and she’s training hard to raise funds for them in the 2016 London
Marathon. Currently working towards getting Giant Schnauzer, Hattie,
operational as a search dog to find missing persons (and even lost estate
agents) throughout the area.

Martin Traves...
Lives locally and devoted to the industry for 30 years (catching up with
Derek). Worked with a corporate agent and 10 years for a local independent
company. We were thrilled to have Martin join us just over 2 years ago and
he is a vital part of our small team. He has sold more than a few thousand
properties over the years for families, companies, solicitor recommendations
and helped to build investment portfolios. There’s not much goes on he
doesn’t know about. Spare time, volunteers for Bournemouth Lifeguard
Corps, teaches rookie Lifeguards, a qualified beach Lifeguard/Rescue Boat
Crew, doesn’t need too much encouragement to get wet.
We are a very busy agency but always have time for anybody
wanting to sell or buy probably their most valuable asset.
Honest straightforward advice.

Brainstorms

1: During a visit to a mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criteria
is that defi nes if a patient should be institutionalised.
“Well,” said the Director, “we fi ll up a bathtub. Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup,
and a bucket to the patient and ask the patient to empty the bathtub.”
Now... Would you use the spoon, the teacup or would you use the bucket?
“Oh, I understand,” said the visitor. “A normal person would choose the bucket, as
it is larger than the spoon.” What was the director’s response?

2. Captured by tribesmen deep in the jungle an explorer was given the chance of
escape by demonstrating his wisdom.
He was given the choice of answering 50 easy questions, but must get them all
correct for freedom, or could choose to answer just one diffi cult question. Failure
would mean death. “Ask me one diffi cult question,” said the explorer, thinking he
may as well get it over with.
“Well, then tell me,” said the cheiftan, “which came fi rst into the world, the
chicken or the egg?”
“The chicken,” replied the explorer very confi dently. “Now let me leave as agreed”
“HA!” exclaimed the chief, “How can you possibly be sure of that?”
How did the explorer arespond to this?

3. Starting with the word STANDARD, take away two letters and add three digits
to make a logical sequence.

4. What is the longest pair of English words that are pronounced exactly the same
but share no letter in common?

5. Imagine you are in a sinking boat surrounded by sharks.
How would you survive?

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years.
They had shared everything. They had talked about everything.
They had kept no secrets from each other, except that the little old
lady had a shoe box in the top of her wardrobe that she had begged
her husband never to open or ask her about.
Sadly, his wife got very sick and the doctor said she would not
recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the old man took down the
shoe box and took it to his wife’s bedside. She agreed that it was
time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it,
he found two crocheted dolls and around £45,000.
He asked her about the contents. “When we were to be married,” she
said, “my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to
never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should
just keep quiet and crochet a doll.”
The little old man was so moved; he had to fi ght back tears. Only two
precious dolls were in the box. She had only been really angry with
him twice in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with
happiness.“My love,” he said, “that explains the dolls, but what about
all of this money? Where did it come from?”
“Oh,” she said. “That’s the money I made from selling the dolls.”

A man goes into a bar and seats himself on a stool. The
bartender looks at him and says, “What’ll it be buddy?”
The man says, “Set me up with seven whiskies, in fact make them
doubles.” The bartender does this and watches the man slug one
down, then the next, then the next, and so on until all seven are
gone almost as quickly as they were served. Staring in disbelief, the
bartender asks why he’s doing all this drinking.
“You’d drink them this fast too if you had what I have.”
The bartender hastily asks, “What do you have pal?”
The man quickly replies, “No money!”

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg especially, when it’s yours!
Gardening Tips for July
Watering, weeding, feeding and looking forward to harvesting your various crops is the order of the day
in July, but watch out!
At this and many other times of the year it seems that every insect and pest is out to ruin your hard work
and destroy your crops and fl owers. Offering a Live & Let Live attitude is noble but often counter-
productive. Spraying can harm the good guys just as well as the bad so here is a rule of thumb that might
help you identify some of the gardeners’ enemies.
As a general rule on deciding whether a non-fl ying creature is a friend or foe is: ‘Does it move quickly?’
If so it is most likely a predator and therefore a friend. ‘If it moves slowly it is probably a plant eater and
probably not what you want to encourage. Hoverfl y, Lace
wings, Ladybird adults and larvae eat their way through
thousands of aphids, mites and scaly insects. Thrushes eat
copious amounts of snails so a strategically placed stone for
use as an anvil will help both you and the dwindling Thrush
population.
These are drawings of a Lace wing and the evolution of a
Ladybird. There are many different colours of Ladybirds,
some are not so friendly but do not kill them as you may
just be hurting one of your friends.
Gardening Tips for August
If you are going on holiday in August whilst the garden is starting to produce crops for harvesting. It
might be helpful if you can persuade a friend to do some watering for you, an offer of free fruit usually
does the trick.
Keep the lower leaves of Tomatoes trimmed to ensure light to the ripening fruit. This is a bad time for
Blossom end Rot, you can identify this as the base of the tomato goes black. Use a calcium dilution in
your watering regime. Ensure the Celery is well blanched by wrapping in cardboard and tying. Protect
Caulifl owers by curving outer leaves upwards and tying up to keep the curds white. Harvest herbs and
preserve larger amounts which can dried or frozen for use later.
Keep feeding plants with a quick acting fertilizer like Growmore to keep them producing. Look for Vine
Weevil damage and treat with acetamiprid (Scotts Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer)
or thiacloprid (Provado Vine Weevil Killer 2)
This is a list of seeds that can be planted at this time. Spring Cabbage : Chinese
Cabbage : Chicory : Winter Lettuce : Autumn Onion : Parsley : Radicchio : Turnip.
Sow seeds for over wintering in the greenhouse. Take cuttings, to propagate bedding,
tender and house plants. Pot up any rooted runners from Strawberries clearing away any
dead leaves.

You are warmly invited to visit our allotments in
Cornelia Road, on Saturday 13th. August for our Annual Summer

Project Indigo
One boy’s adventure through time and space!

Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com
Welcome to Fifteenth Century Italy - otherwise known as
Portmeirion. We are travelling back in time to visit North
Wales for the fi lming location of the Tom Baker Doctor Who
episode The Masque of Mandragora (1976).
In this classic episode, The Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane
materialise the TARDIS in an orange grove on Earth in the
15th Century, which the Doctor describes as ‘not a pleasant
time’. This story is a historical drama which was rare for
Doctor Who at that time.
Portmeirion is located in area of Wales called Gwynedd and
is near Porthmadog. It was designed and built by the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis in
the style of an Italian village, and it is now a tourist village. Work started in 1925 and it
took 50 years for him to build this village but it was fi nished just before he died. He built it
to show how you can develop a naturally beautiful site without ruining it.
Apart from Doctor Who, Portmeirion has served as the location for many fi lms and
television shows, and is very well known as the fi lming location for the 1960s television
show The Prisoner.

A lot of time and money was spent travelling back and forth between London and North
Wales. With travelling the shoot would take 5 or 6 days and there were no motorways. It
was hard to get horses, props, costumes and make-up vans there.
To keep Portmeirion looking like 15th Century Italy the Director, Rodney Bennett, did
very selective shooting and not many panoramic movements. He used the Italianate
backgrounds and covered up bits that didn’t look right for the period. A fake catacomb
entrance was made to link the studio scenes with Portmeirion. Clough Williams-
Ellis liked the look of the ruins Temple of Demnos and asked the BBC to leave them.
Sadly they were made of polystyrene!
Jim Sangster, a TV Historian, said ‘…..we know
its Portmeirion, but actually when you are
watching it I don’t think that distracts, I don’t
think it gets in the way at all. I’m absolutely
convinced they went to Italy as far as I’m
concerned’ which proves that Portmeirion was
the most convincing place to fi lm The Masque of
Mandragora!
Portmeirion is a calm, tranquil and cool place to
visit and is worth the travel. My favourite part
was paddling in the pool in the Piazza - I was
lucky that it was sunny that day!

Thank you for reading and I hope you will join me again for my next
Doctor Who adventure.

Who are we?
The Moordown Traders Association are an enthusiastic group of business
owners from the Moordown community who have come together to promote
local trade and raise the profi le of Moordown as a shopping and business
destination, to support local traders and enhance local businesses.
We meet regularly, work voluntarily and liaise closely with the Bournemouth
Chamber of Trade & Commerce (BCTC), Bournemouth Council, elected
Members and local media to ensure that the Moordown trading district is
represented in a positive light.

What do we do?
Our number one aim as a trade association is the promotion and advertising
of our local businesses to the general public, both in Moordown and the wider
community. For example, Fire Radio adverts, Moordown shoppers map, MTA
web directory, presence at local carnivals and fetes etc

How can you benefi t?
Business promotion: Free listing and link on the MTA website, free addition
to the MTA shopper’s map (20,000 distributed bi-annually), opportunity for a
free business focus in The Local Eye magazine which reaches around 13,000
homes and businesses in the area, networking opportunities, reduced rates at
MTA organised events and local trader-trader discounts.
We also liaise with the local Police and Community Support Offi cers,
highlighting issues of concern for example poor parking or graffi ti.
How much does it cost?
£20 for annual membership, or £40 for membership and a personalised page
on the MTA website. (That’s just £3.33 a month for the package!!)
Run by volunteers who are fellow traders, our priority lies with improving the
area and expanding our customer base over making a profi t off membership,
so we can keep costs at a bare minimum.
Time wise, meetings are not compulsory and how much you get involved is
entirely up to you.

Meeting Dates
The Moordown Traders Association meet monthly between 6pm-8pm
upstairs at the Moordown Conservative Club in Balfour Road.

All Moordown traders & businesses are welcome.
Come along, air your views and meet other local business people.
Drinks available at the bar and sandwiches are provided for the peckish.

Next meeting dates are:
Tuesday 19th July / Tuesday 20th September

TIRED OF POTHOLES

Bumpy ride this morning? View blocked by dumped rubbish?

Potholes and fly tipping are just two of the street faults that can be reported via
the website www.FixMyStreet.com along with vandalism, graffiti, dog fouling
and many other common community issues.

While most of us know that the council are responsible for fixing these things,
we may not know which council, let along which department in which council.
With FixMyStreet, all you have to do is locate the problem on a map, and select
a category: the site then sends it off to the right place to get it fixed.

All reports are published on the site, as well as being sent to the council.
Browsing your own postcode can be interesting, as you soon learn what the
persistent problems are in your area, and whether or not they are being fixed.
There’s also the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments
section.

FixMyStreet comes from the UK not-for-profit organisation mySociety, and
is one of its longest-running and most-used services. It is just one of several
projects aimed at making it easier for citizens to get things changed in their
own community. So, next time you see something that needs fixing, be it a
broken paving slab or a flickering streetlight, all you need to remember is

We were at a Chinese restaurant recently when the waiter set
chopsticks at our places. Dan made a point of reaching into his
jacket and pulling out his own pair with a flourish.
‘As a keen environmentalist,’ Dan declared loudly ‘I do not approve
of destroying bamboo forests for throwaway utensils.’
The waiter inspected his chopsticks. ‘Ah lovely, very beautiful,’
he said politely. ‘Ivory.’
