Chiropody / Podiatry

AH Parfiit Chiropdy provides professional foot treatments for all the family

Chiropody / podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis
and treatment of the foot, ankle and lower leg
conditions, and there is no difference between a
chiropodist or a podiatrist. Chiropody is the old term
for treatment by a foot health professional but the
term podiatry is becoming increasingly used as it is
a common term, used all over the world,
for treatment by a foot health professional.

The team at AH Parfitt Chiropodry are registered with the Health Care
Professions Council and are members of the Society of Chiropodists and
Podiatrists, with extended scope of practice for ‘Foot Mobilisation’ and local
anaesthetic to carry out nail surgery.

There are many ailments and conditions that can be successfully treated by a
qualified chiropodist, these include: Aching and/or tired feet, Musckuloskeletal
problems, Biomechanical abnormalities of the foot and ankle, Flat feet and
fallen arches, Skin conditions, Corns and Callus, Verrucae and warts, Fungal
infections of the skin and nails, Diabetic foot health, Sports Injuries and
Paediatric (children’s) feet.

Common Problems

Athletes Foot - Verrucaes - Heel Pain - Corns and Calluses - Bunions
Ingowing Toenails - Plantar Fasciitis - Diabetic Foot Conditions
Hammer Toes - Fungal Nail Infections - Arthritis in the Feet

People with diabetes may be at risk of developing foot
problems. Therefore it is beneficial to be screened, at least
annually, to detect the presence of neuropathy, ischaemia
and/or foot deformities.

Project Indigo

One boy’s adventure through time and space!

Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at...
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com

Project Indigo is my blog where I travel the world visiting
people and places associated with Doctor Who. On New
Year’s Day I went to Tyntesfield which is a stately home
near Wraxall in North Somerset, 6 miles west of Bristol.
I went there because it is a filming location for the
episode ‘Hide’ (2013) featuring the Eleventh Doctor and
his companion Clara. To get to the house I had to walk
through Paradise - the name the Gibbs family gave to their
Arboretum.

Tyntesfield was used for the interior of Caliburn House,
a gigantic old haunted house on the moors. The Doctor
and Clara travelled in time to 1974 to visit Professor Alec Palmer and the psychic Emma
Grayling. They went there to do some Ghostbusting and investigate The Witch of the Well.
Tyntesfield is a Victorian Gothic Revival House and was chosen for the filming in May 2012
due to its recently restored interior. It was bought in 1843 by William Gibbs who at one
time was the richest commoner in the UK. He made his fortunes by selling fertiliser. This
fertiliser was very special as it came from Peruvian bird-droppings and gave him the nick-
name The Guano King!

After WW2 came the demolition of 100s of great houses and the National Trust placed
Tyntesfield second on its list of priorities to preserve with the architect Mark Girouard
summarising that:-
‘There is no other Victorian country house which so richly represents its age as Tyntesfield’.
The house stayed within the Gibbs family until 2002 when it came under the care of the
National Trust. The Trust campaigned to raise funds and purchased it through public
donations and funding from the National Lottery. They fended off interest from other
potential buyers including Madonna, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Doctor Who star Kylie
Minogue who played Astrid in the 2007 Christmas special ‘Voyage of the Damned’.

Some may also recognise Tyntesfield from other TV and film,
including the Sherlock episode ‘The Abominable Bride’, the
ITV series of Anthony Trollope’s ‘Doctor Thorne’ and the 2017
film of Agatha Christie’s ‘The Crooked House’. All money
raised from filming goes towards keeping the house and
estate ship-shape.
My time at Tyntesfield was short but well-spent. I hope to go
back during the summer and explore the estate, and see if
I can locate some bats, newts and badgers which all inhabit
the estate. I hope you get a chance to visit Tyntesfield too.

If you would like to read about my other Doctor Who adventures please check out my blog.
Thanks for reading, goodbye!

Once my dog ate all the Scrabble tiles.
For days he kept leaving little messages around the house.
A woman in labour suddenly shouted, “Shouldn’t! Wouldn’t! Couldn’t! Didn’t! Can’t!”
“Don’t worry,” said the midwife, “Those are just contractions.”

Top Tips For Selling Your House

Widely regarded by many as being one of the most stressful processes a person can go
through, selling a home can take its toll on not only your wallet but also your stress
levels. However, being prepared and taking some well thought out steps to get your
home looking its best can substantially reduce this stress and help you to sell your
home even quicker.

First Impressions: The outside of your property is the first chance to wow potential
buyers and to get them interested in seeing more. Little things can make a huge
difference to the kerb appeal of your house, so make sure you cut the grass, sweep all
of the paths, move your bins out of view and clean up anything unsightly.
For a touch of colour, think about adding inexpensive hanging baskets and planting
some bedding flowers; these types of flowers really make a statement and provide
a focal point for the outside of the property. It is also a good idea to cut back any
overgrown bushes and to clean any patio areas. A well maintained garden can help
prospective buyers visualise themselves using the garden.
It is also a good idea to freshen up any tired or outdated exterior fixtures such as fences
or garden furniture and make sure that any external windows and doors are in good
condition, are clean, and all latches and handles are in working order.

Declutter: If potential buyers cannot envisage themselves living in a property, it
is harder for them to make a decision. People often find this difficult when looking
around houses and one of the major reasons for this is clutter.
Think about moving out or storing any bulky furniture and try to declutter as much as
possible, but leave some of your personality to shine through. Open spaces and neutral
colours often make small rooms feel bigger and make it easier for buyers to imagine
their belongings in the space.

Clean & Fresh: Bad smells are known to be one of the biggest turn offs for
prospective buyers, so making sure that your drains and sinks are clean, your food bin
is disinfected and that your house is aired out can make a big difference.
Fresh flowers or a fruit bowl provide a pleasant smell to a room. Scented candles are
also an option, but don’t over do it, too many conflicting smells can be off-putting.

WHAT COULD YOU BE GETTING INVOLVED WITH MONTH?

Fairtrade Fortnight - 25th February > 12th March: www.fairtrade.org.uk
For two weeks each year, thousands of individuals, companies and groups across
the UK come together to celebrate the people who grow our food, people who live
in some of the poorest countries in the world and who are often exploited and
badly paid. This year we are focusing on the people – in particular the women –
who grow the cocoa in the chocolate we love so much.

The Great Daffodil Appeal - 1st > 31st March: www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil
This is the Marie Curie Cancer Care’s annual flagship appeal. You might have
already signed up to a collection but there are lots of other ways you can support
the Great Daffodil Appeal this spring. Visit the Marie Curie website for more.

British Science Week - 6th > 17th March: www.britishscienceassociation.org
A ten-day celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) -
featuring fascinating, entertaining and engaging events and activities across the
UK for people of all ages.
BSW provides a platform to stimulate and support teachers, STEM professionals,
science communicators and the general public to produce and participate in
STEM events and activities.
Anyone can organise an event or activity, and the British Science Association
helps organisers plan by providing free activity and support resources.
We welcome and support any type of organiser, from schools to community
groups, from parents to large organisations. The resulting programme of events is
a hugely varied and eclectic mix.

Brain Awareness Week - 11th > 17th March: www.dana.org/BAW
BAW is the global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and
benefits of brain research.
Every March, BAW unites the efforts of partner organisations worldwide in a
celebration of the brain for people of all ages. Activities are limited only by the
organisers’ imaginations and include open days at neuroscience labs, exhibitions
about the brain, lectures on brain-related topics; social media campaigns,
displays at libraries and community centers, classroom workshops and more.

World Down Syndrome Day - 21st March: www.worlddownsyndromeday2.org
A global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations
since 2012.
Down Syndrome International (DSi) encourages our friends all over the world to
choose their own activities and events on WDSD to help raise awareness of what
Down syndrome is, what it means to have Down syndrome, and how people with
Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.

Travel Feature -
New York or Las Vegas...

When I get asked to quote a city break in the USA for clients – I could
have a wager on it being one of only a small handful of popular cities;
Washington, San Francisco. Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston. Sometimes
I can be surprised and intrigued for it to be somewhere less `typical’ - like
Seattle. New Orleans. Dallas. Or Nashville.
However, far and beyond the most popular city break enquiry seems to be
for New York, or Las Vegas. Neither of them typifies the USA in general,
but they are unique, and iconic. And vastly different to each other. I’ve been to both and would go back
again – each are distinctive, and genuinely a one-off destination of their own.

New York is on the eastern seaboard – so is one of the shorter hops to the USA – a mere average of 8
hours flying time. Walking around it’s streets is like being on a giant film set – everywhere seems familiar –
usually because of the many Hollywood films we’ve grown up with over the years. New York has so many
iconic sights amongst its skyscrapers – that it reads like a who’s who on the film credits. Statue of Liberty.
Central Park. Empire State building. Broadway. Times Square. 5th Avenues. Macy’s. The Metropolitan
Museum of Art. Brooklyn Bridge. Grand Central station.
It’s all hustle and bustle. The Big Apple is a 24 hours non-stop city that will exhilarate and exhaust you –
but your senses will be well and truly alive. This is one cool city. See the sights. Do some shopping. Take
in a show. Walk around Greenwich Village. Or Little Italy. Try Katz Delicatessen on the Lower East Side –
remember Harry met Sally! Visit Bronx Zoo. Catch a game at Yankee Stadium. Make a trip out to Coney
Island. Try a New York Bagel. Or a Hot Dog from a street vender.

Las Vegas is in Nevada – so it’s more of a 10 hours flight. But the weather is usually hot and sunny. This
is also the city that never sleeps – but it’s a city of giant casinos, blockbuster shows, and spectacular hotels.
Las Vegas is like a grown-ups Disney! Add to that some great opportunities to explore further afield;
Los Angeles is only a short flight away. The Hoover Dam isn’t far, neither is the truly awe-inspiring Grand
Canyon. Also places like Red Rock Canyon, and the Zion National Park.
Las Vegas is justifiably one of the most visited and renowned places in the world, famous for its mega
sized casino–hotels that are spread along the length of its famous Strip. It’s known for its gambling,
shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and nightlife. They don’t call it the Entertainment Capital of the
world for nothing. Everything is here: From the fabulous Bellagio Fountains,
the Stratosphere Observation Deck, the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, and
Fremont Street – the original central of Vegas from the Elvis and Frank
Sinatra days. You can soak up the rays in your hotel pool – gamble the
day away in a casino, catch a world class show, dine in some exquisite
restaurants, or drive to an out of town shopping outlet. Or try a helicopter
ride over the strip at night. It’s all here.

Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...

After his return from Rome, a passenger couldn’t find his luggage in the London
Gatwick airport baggage area. So he went to the lost luggage office and told the woman

there that his bags hadn’t shown up on the carousel. She smiled and told him not to
worry because they were trained professionals and he was in good hands.
‘First of all”, she asked him, ‘has your plane arrived yet?’
....................................

At the airline check in at London Heathrow, a man walked up with three bags. He put
them down and says to the young lady, ‘I’d like you to send this one to Los Angeles, that
one to Hong Kong and the last one to Dublin.’ Her face shows signs of confusion before

her training takes over and she says, ‘I’m afraid we can’t do that, sir.’
‘Why not?’ Asked the man, ‘you did the last time I flew with you.’

Brain Power

1. Three people check into a hotel. They pay £30 to the manager and go to their

room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is £25 and gives £5
to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons
that £5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets £2 and gives £1
to each person. Now each person paid £10 and got back £1. So they paid £9 each,
totalling £27. The bellboy has £2, totalling £29. Where is the missing £1?

Eddie and his wife Carol are awakened at 3 o’clock early one Saturday morning
by a loud pounding on the door. Eddie gets up and goes to the door where he sees a

drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain.
‘Give us a push’ says the swaying stranger. ‘Not a chance’, says the husband, ‘It is three

o’ clock in the morning.’ He slams the door and returns to bed.
‘Who was that?’ asked his wife. ‘Just some drunk guy asking for a push’, he answers.
‘Did you help him?’ Carol asks. ‘No. I did not. It is three o’ clock in the morning and

it is pouring with rain outside.
His wife said, ‘Don’t you remember about three months ago when we broke down

and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be
ashamed of yourself.

Eddie does as he is told, gets dressed and goes out into the pouring rain. He calls out
into the dark, ‘Hello! Are you still there? ‘Yes’, comes back the answer.

‘Do you still need a push?’ calls out Eddie. ‘Yes. Please.’ comes the reply from the
darkness.‘Where are you?’ asks Eddie.

‘Over here on the swing’, replies the drunk

Rotary Youth Speaks
The Annual Battle Of Words And Ideas

Press release
For immediate distribution: 18 August 2018

Poole Mayor attends Bacalao celebration lunch 13 teams of secondary school students met
last month at Bournemouth School for Girls
for annual battle of words and ideas – the
Rotary Youth Speaks Competition.

cillor Sean Gabriel, along with other guests The teams came from across the local area,
attended, a Grand Bacalao lunch at the Hotel du Vin on Thursday (16 August) to celebrate the successful with representatives from Avonbourne
completion of the Rotary Club of Poole Bay’s Heritage Lottery funded project - Pirates, Castaways & College, Bournemouth School, Bournemouth
Codfish. School for Girls, Harewood College, Lytchett
Minster School and Twynham School.
Bacalao is a Portuguese dish which uses salted cod, a trademark of the Poole fishermen as it fared better
in the dry climate of southern Europe. Guests were able to sample a version devised by the head chef at
the Hotel du Vin – which appropriately started life itself as one of Poole’s Georgian merchant venturers
houses. They also enjoyed Jane’s Story (from June Garland) and a visit from Governor Woodes Rogers
(aka Colin Phillimore).

Over the last year, Poole Bay Rotary has been involved in taking another look at the maritime history of

Each team was composed of three students, with the competition divided (by age) betweenPoole between 1580 and 1730. Originally inspired by trying to identify whether three historical
intermediates and seniors.characters gave their names to some of the old alleys leading to the Quay, the project has developed into

something more broadly based.

The place of women in 17th century society, the growth of Poole from its origins as a wool port, cod
fishing, international trade, pirates, privateers and merchant venturers are all part of this fascinating
story. The 150 years from 1580 to 1730 is an important prelude to Poole’s Georgian hey-day, one which
is now neatly summarised in the new heritage book published by the Rotary Club.

The winners of the Senior Competition were AvonbourneDon Nutt, project manager and a member of Poole Bay Rotary, said, “We have been thrilled not only by

the number and enthusiasm of our community researchers, but also by the interest already shown by

College, speaking about ‘Technological Change’.local people. We very much hope that our new book, the associated website and other interpretative

material which we will be handing over to Poole Museum will provide a suitable legacy, ensuring that

The runners up were Lytchett Minster School (B team), withPoole’s heritage can be shared as widely as possible with young people, residents and visitors.”

Stephen Boyce, Chair of Heritage Lottery Fund South West Committee, quoting from England in

third place going to Bournemouth School for Girls (B team).Particular said, “Stories are the currency of ordinary history. Small details, such as the name of a street,

help us share the knowledge of what makes a place”. He went on to congratulate the Rotary Club for
adding to the 40 projects already supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in Poole. He reminded the
audience that these are only made possible by the generosity of National Lottery players.

In the Intermediate competition, another of the Bournemouth
School for Girls teams took first place, talking about
‘What is Beauty?’. Second place went to students from
Twynham School, with another team from Lytchett Minster
School coming third.

Each team is made up of three students. One acts as the chairperson, a second delivers the main
talk with the third member providing the vote of thanks. The topics for the various talks are
chosen by the students themselves. Each person has to keep within a set time limit, with marks
being awarded not only for content and delivery, but also how the team works together and react
to each other. The main speaker has five minutes to talk on their chosen topic before responding
to a question from the audience. The winners go through the regional Rotary finals.

The event was organised, on behalf of the nine local Rotary Clubs, by Poole Bay Rotary.
The prizes and certificates were presented by Poole Bay President Dimpee Kalita-Smith, who
said, “It’s amazing to hear young people speak so confidently and eloquently on these topics
about which they are so passionate. The competition provides them with a good training in public
speaking for later life.”

There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg especially, when it’s yours!

March / April - Gardeners Tips

March is a very busy month for us, tidying up after winter, turning in compost or manure to provide
much needed substance to the soil.
If you haven’t cleared away the dead stems from last year’s perennials, now’s your last chance to do
it before the new growth comes through and makes it really tricky to see what’s what. Plants such as
Echinacea and Rudbeckias should be cut back as close as you can to the ground. Be sure to fork in some
well-rotted manure around your Roses and sprinkle some Sulphate of Potash around the roots of all
your fruiting bushes and plants.
Have a good look around for plants that you can divide. Look for any congested clumps of perennials
such as Persicaria (knot weeds), Geraniums, Daylilies and Iris – in fact, pretty much anything with lots
of stems. Dividing a plant will keep it healthy and enable you to double your in flower show. Ideally, you
should have a root ball as wide as the shrub itself. Some shrubs will fall into pieces when you dig them
up. If not, use a shovel or sharp knife to gently tease or cut the shrub apart with minimal cutting and
damage, making sure to get one or more canes and a nice root ball with each division.
Inside: Chitting main crop spuds,
Sowing under cover: lettuces, tomatoes, salads and cauliflowers.
Sowing outside: Peas, Carrots, Beetroot, summer and autumn Cabbages, herbs, Leeks, Spinach,
Turnips, Spring Onions, Brussel Sprouts and Parsnips, Onions, and Shallots. Permanent crops, such as
Asparagus and Strawberries, can also be planted now. Planting your early potatoes and other tubers
both in the garden and the allotment.
If you want a good show of Gladioli, Agapanthus or lilies later, then you must plant the corms now.
April.
This is my 5th. Year in writing this column for The Local Eye, I hope those of you who read it find
the topics of some interest and some help. There is so much stuff in the magazines, books, telly and
the internet to give you lists of things to do on a timely basis. Easter is late this year, on 21st. April,
remember last year? We are much more likely to get snow at Easter than we are at Christmas, so do
bear this mind.
My wife and I recently moved house and it didn’t come without a few surprises. This was our first
experience of False Grass (Astroturf). Ugh! we thought, but as we have been busy decorating we decided
to clean it up and see how it looks. We do have some substantial trees overhanging which provide plenty
of shade and leaf fall, making it difficult for natural grass to produce a good lawn. My wife scraped off
years of moss and surface weeds including self-set grass and look at the improvement!

I must say we are getting used to it. With so many other jobs to do it is a relief knowing the ‘lawn’ has
lost its’ place in the hierarchy of jobs. So far I have to say I am really impressed. It dries quickly, it
doesn’t get muddy, it doesn’t need cutting or scarifying, it can be vacuumed up using a garden vacuum
similar to the image above. They cost from around £30 upwards.
Do enjoy the Easter Bank Holiday, it could be a scorcher who snows.

Child safety is the winner in new
£5,000 sponsorship deal

Bournemouth is the latest business to support Dorset skills for life charity
SafeWise with a sponsorship package worth £5,000.

The sponsorship will help ensure that thousands of school children and

families remain safe and sound when visiting SafeWise learning villages in

Bournemouth and Weymouth.

As part of the arrangement MSP carried out a full inspection of SafeWise

facilities - presenting an unusual challenge for Managing Director Malcolm

Pitcher, who possesses 30 years experience in the industry.

Malcolm said: “We work with companies of all type and size across the

country but this has got to be our most unusual task to date, and a big

responsibility too, because if anywhere needs to be safe for children to visit,
