Educational Director’s Message
Lucas Bedell What a start to Quarter 1! First, the South Region has now officially joined Sterling Education! This
makes it so we have six countries within our school. In the first few months of school we have already
had many regional events that have brought our students, staff, and community together and there
are more to come. The Global House Cup andTopDux have started allowing our student to develop
the OneSchool skills. There are so many great things that are taking place at the campuses and we
share them within the National Bi-weekly Journal.
There are four Student LeadershipTeams across Sterling Education that represent each region. Our
SLTs work within their region, but the structure, mission, and goals are the same across Sterling
Education. Instead of having multiple regional newsletters each quarter the SLT decided to create a
National Newsletter and at the end of each semester we will have a hard copy Newsletter for purchase
and as usual all profits will go towards supporting future events. Creating a national newsletter isn’t
possible without the hard work, leadership, and collaboration of our SLTs across thousands of miles.
Thank you to our SLT members, SLT advisors-Ramon Dummet (South), Cara Johnson (West),
Patyrcja Magierowska (North), Andrew Kralik (East), and all students, staff, parents, and
community for supporting the events, fundraising, and various activities each month. We are looking
forward to some pretty cool things in the second quarter! In the meantime enjoy the recap of an
awesome first quarter!

a Successful slt
The Student Leadership Team has been working since the beginning of the year to enhance the school year and do what they can
to provide a better learning environment. Our focus has been on the extra things that make students want to come to school every
day. This is through encouraging motivation and responsibility. Within each school hallway, there is a board that is continually
reminding the students of upcoming events and fundraisers. Not only what is upcoming, but current news and house team updates.
This makes students feel a part of the larger picture, as better communication with the students has been our goal.

Track & Field Day
On Friday,October 21,all nine campuses from the East Region
met up together for the Track and Field day in Rochester,
NY, many people travelling great distances. The plan was
to have the event on the outdoor track but unfortunately it
rained the day before and throughout that morning so it was
changed to the indoor track because no one wants to run in
rain! Although the outdoor track wasn’t used, there were
some teachers who made sacrifices so students could still
do shot putt outside. Overall, everyone had a great time and
had lots of fun. We would like to thank all the staff, parents,
and students for making this day happen!

On September 30th, at 9 o’clock, the Chesapeake students gathered together in the City
of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. We started off by going to see the Liberty Bell. When
we entered the building, we began walking down a long hallway full of history and finally
at the end, we got to see the original Liberty Bell. After we saw that attraction, we
went to the Benjamin Franklin Museum. There were a lot of hands-on activities which
was really awesome! From the museum, we went to the Old City Hall and also saw the
original copy of the Declaration of Independence. Finally, we went to Bourse where we
sat down to eat Sonny’s Famous Philly Cheesesteaks. A huge thanks to everyone who
was involved and also the wonderful chaperones for taking the students whether far or
near. What an amazing day!

On September 30, the Cleveland Campus went for a historical field trip on the Good
Time III, a tour boat that cruises the historic district of Cleveland. The day began with
some games at school. The challenges included box puzzles, human pyramids, and a
ridiculous game where you had to rub your nose with vaseline then, using only your
nose you had to transport cotton balls around rooms. This resulted in a lot of cotton
fluff! Afterwards, we headed to the park for some pictures then played volleyball on a
public court while waiting to board the Good Time III.The Good Time III tours groups
around the Lake Erie shoreline and the Cuyahoga river, while giving lots of historical
background on Cleveland. When we got on, we took over a deck and a half, then we
spent the ride looking, laughing, talking, and mainly, enjoying The Land! Thanks to
the staff, students, and chaperones who made this a highly enjoyable and humorous
experience!
Surprise Breakfast 9
On August 26, 2016 we came to school and were met by a wonderful surprise! As we walked into the school building we smelled
pancakes, bacon, and sausage cooking! The seniors and juniors were very generous and had made a welcome back breakfast for
all of the students and many of the parents! There were tables set up outside for the students to eat and socialize before school
started. We quickly wolfed down our breakfast and made our way to morning announcements feeling happy and ready to go on
our first Friday!!! It made for a wonderful morning thanks to the juniors and seniors!

Columbus Last Friday we went to the Phoenix bat factory.
Here we learned that the workers have a great sense
Bat Factory of humor judging by the toxic waste sign hanging
on the bathroom door, and the quote on the van
stating, “Hug a tree then make it into a bat”, sorry
tree huggers. Our tour was over early so we went
to a park to eat lunch and partake in activities.
We looked up as a huge fork of lightning shot out
of the sky and thunder rocked our world. We were
all herded back to the vans as the rain started
thundering out of the sky. Safely in the car we ate
our lunch as we headed home decorated with only a
couple of bashes with the bats we were given after
the tour. This was definitely the best part of the trip.
On the factual side, the machinery used in the
factory is one of 2 ever created and is the most high
tech piece of machinery ever created of that scale.
It is a CNC lathe that turns wood at over 48 times
a second, yup, one whole, MISSISSIPPI. The lathe
is totally computer driven and sands and finishes
the bat as the machinery arm moves back to its
original position. The bat is then shot out the end of
the machine ready for painting and the application
of the logo. We learned about Ash Bore and how all
the Ash trees are dying and the price of Ash bats is
going up. For the economic fanatics, the company is
a private limited corporation. Overall it was a fun,
but short, field trip.

Chaos in the Lunch Room!
Lunch time began with the hum of microwaves and the buzz of conversation filling the room as students sat down to begin their
lunch. There’s a MOUSE! Nobody believed it true and lunch continued as normal….until a tiny brown object hurtled across the
room towards the nearest cover – the trash can. Chaos ensued as half the students took refuge on the nearest table or chair and
the other half of the students chased after the terrified mouse with the nearest weapons they could find which included plates, cups,
knives and forks. As the mouse was chased around the room, the volume of shouts and laughter slowly increased, bringing teachers
and the secretary rushing to see what was happening while the mouse took the opportunity to seek refuge under the refrigerator.
Out from the wall the refrigerator was pulled with many groping hands prodding about, forcing the mouse to dart out towards
the door held open for it where it ran, as fast as its legs could carry it, away from school building. The teachers left, shaking their
heads, as the laughter continued to ring through the cafeteria.

Kentucky Field Trip
On October 30th, staff, students, parents, and other community members from both the Indy and
Knoxville campuses drove to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY for a field trip. At the
beginning everyone was shown around the Park’s museums. A tour guide showed us around where we
learned about the history of the horse and what the horse is used for nowadays. We watched short
videos, saw pictures, and read facts about horses. After, we made our way to the Draft Horse Barn
where we watched a 15 minute demonstration showing preparation, harnessing, and breed history.
Next, everybody went to the Hall of Champions. Here, thoroughbred race legends Da Hoss, Funny
Cide, Go for Gin, and Be a Bono were shown to us.
Afterwards, everyone had lunch and moved to the mounted police section. This was where horses
(with police riding them) had to go through a number of different obstacles. If they completed
each stage successfully, then they had “passed.” Following this, came the Breeds Barn Show where
we were introduced to the American Quarter and Morgan horse, the Arabian, the Gypsy Vanner, a
Spanish horse, a Native American horse, and a medieval type horse. This was a very remarkable show
with music, narration, and interaction. Lastly, the day was finished with a visit to the gift shop.
Overall, this day was enjoyed by all and a big thank you goes to the parents who kindly drove the
students here and the teachers who made the effort to come too!

was a variety that ranged from basketball shooting skills to spelling. Thanks to the Rochester Staff for co-ordinating

In the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “Believe you can, and you are halfway there.” Knoxville Fundraising Team brought together
the school to really prove this while offering a $5 lunch and a free car-wash that raised over 1200 dollars!
It started on a warm Tuesday morning when the Knoxville students decided that Saturday would be the perfect day to serve the
community lunch and give a free car wash... After much shock about how it could be done, we changed it into why it couldn’t be
done... Grocery shopping on Friday, setting up on Friday night, and preparation on Saturday morning – no problem! Saturday
rolled around after much preparation bringing with it beautiful weather and a bunch of hungry people! After serving hot walking
tacos full of spicy ground beef, bubbling nacho cheese, and a wide variety of toppings to the lines out the door, we then served all
of the hungry helpers who had been scrubbing and bubbling away on many a vehicle, including a fire truck! Thanks to all those
who made it one serious success! If you put your mind to it, you CAN do it!

In the Life of the Vending Machine
Each darkened night, the students yell out and thunder
down the hallway that lies only inches away from my
side. Their screams of happiness are my dreams of joy
as I sit there each night, thankful that they leave. The
students beat me, pushing in dollars and pulling out all
my goodness, especially during collaboration and lunch,
and occasionally as the students sneak in for a snack for
class... Hundreds of packets of goldfish, Doritos, sour
patch kids, pop tarts, all those little bundles of joy fall
out of me as dollar after dollar, quarter after quarter are
pushed in. I sit there, scared to deah as I am beaten if
I don’t return a snack in exchange. Then comes along a
man who inserts the key and opens it to help those little
children. I am the snack machine – apparently a well
needed and well used object that has replaced the Pit
Stop! But you might as well check me out, because the
students have given me raving reviews!

Being close to one of the most historical cities in America,
the New England site definitely was not short of places to
visit. Led by a tour guide dressed as Isaiah Thomas – who
wrote the most well-known newspaper of the time period ‘The
Massachusetts Spy’ – in typical 18th century fashion, the
students and staff went on to hear the history of Colonial
Boston including touring King’s Chapel Cemetery where
Revolutionary leaders Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and John
Hancock were buried. After walking past the building of the
Old Massachusetts State House, the location of the Boston
Massacre, and Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the staff
and students enjoyed lunch from Quincy Market where you
can find 100 plus stores, artisan pushcarts, and restaurants
right on Boston’s famed Freedom Trail. Once we finished lunch
and packed up, we walked back to the Boston Commons – the
first public park where you can bring your cattle to graze in
the center of the city – where we began our tour. After a game
of football and a great day with the whole New England site,
we departed for the day.

Before the end of the school year, the students at the Sterling East 15
Manchester Campus decided that we needed to turn part of our dusty
warehouse into an SDL area. We soon realized that we only had three
weeks left of summer vacation and we hadn’t even started! Apparently
this wasn’t a problem, as 5 local businesses willingly chipped in money
and supplies on days’ notice while some students designed the SDL
area and picked out furniture. Eager to get started, 5 students and
2 parents arrived at the school. The work went without a glitch,
with the exception of when, due to our lack of experience working
the security alarm, the whole Bloomfield Police Department landed
on our doorstep! After surviving the incident, we continued to paint
the walls, carpet the floors, and assemble furniture, including some
comfortable chairs and a whiteboard table. A huge thanks goes to all
of the businesses and workers who helped make it happen!

Watch out! Hollered the cart teams as they raced down the
Saugatuck sand dune. On Saturday September 24, seven teams
gathered in the back field of our school to compete in the Ultimate
Cart-a-thon challenge. Each cart lined up at the starting line and
got ready for the tour of Michigan! The race was to see which team
could make it through all the challenges in the shortest amount
of time. From Holland to the Mackinac Bridge, carts sped through
construction on I-75, and stopped to complete their farm chores as
they made it back to the final stretch down Woodward. It was a very
successful day! All of the teams raised over $100,000 in total! We
couldn’t have done it without the effort put in from the teams and
the support from the team leaders. Great job teams!

purpose room was completely re-done. Also the teachers came in and painted their rooms. Now every room in the school has been

This year at Pascack Valley, we did something fun and exciting. We had a school wide Olympics!
The students were broken up into 2 teams: Australia and USA. For the first 3 weeks we practiced
for the Olympics. After the three weeks of practice were done, we started the Olympics.
In the Olympics, we played soccer, volleyball, football, handball, basketball, track and field, and
table tennis. We did the Olympics during our gym time. We finished the Olympics at the end of
the first quarter, with Australia winning by one medalictory. This was a fun initiative that all
the students enjoyed.
Gianna Ewing – 8th Grade
On Friday, September 30th, all of the students in the East Region went on a history themed field trip. The students
at Pascack Valley went on three different trips; the elementary went to Museum Village, the 7-9 Grades went to
West Point, and the 10-12 Grades went to Ellis Island.
Museum Village
For the elementary first quarter field trip, we went to Museum Village. It is a Ellis Island
very fun place and teaches you about life in the olden days. First we went to see
how medicine was made. Then we went and saw how they made brooms. Some
things that we all enjoyed was making candles and also going to the school
house. We had homemade butter and pretzels, and we wish we could make them
at home. It was raining and cold but all enjoyed the day. Thank you to all that
helped.

West Point
The 7th, 8th, and 9th graders all went to West Point
for our campus field trip. We were able to have
a guided tour with a 5 star tour guide. The tour
included going through the church, driving around in
a bus, seeing huge buildings, the marching grounds,

30 days of change
During the month of October, the students competed
in the annual fitness challenge. However, this year
featured a new twist. Instead of using paper sheets
and counting points based on minutes of exercise,
we used an online system, Daily Endorphin, which
counted points based on the actual exercise, the
intensity of the exercise, as well as the minutes of
exercise. Students could also earn points for nutrition
and wellness, including things like eating your fruits
and vegetables and your number of steps. Without
the monotony of the paper version, where there was a
maximum number of points you could earn per week,
this system allowed all students to have a fair chance
at getting points based on what they could and what
they wanted to do!
Congratulations to the Warriors team for racking
up the most points, with an average of 951 points
per teammate! Also, a big shout-out to the top
individual, Jeremy Druckenmiller with 5,915 points!

raise the most money from box tops. The prize was ice cream!! So, for two weeks students from each teams brought in as many

East COOKIE SWAP!
Set on by our Student Leadership Team, the
cookie swap provides a “sweet” break from the
monotony of day-to-day schooling. Much like
it sounds, all students and teachers bring in
enough of their favorite treats to give away to
the other teachers and students. The Columbus
campus, for example, split up between
elementary and high/middle school and the
kids within those groups traded their cookies.
In the end, each person has the same amount of
cookies that they brought but instead of being
one kind, it is a whole variety of goodness!
Some of the treats included classic chocolate
chip cookies, fudge, millionaire bars, s’more
cups and many more!
There were no major “instances” that resulted
from the cookie swap although one person
(no names mentioned, Widtfeldt!) managed
to inhale fourteen assorted cookies and bars
in a row, IN UNDER TEN MINUTES! Pretty
epic! :D
Overall, the cookie swap was an awesome
success and the next one is being eagerly
anticipated!

The bell to start lunch on Wednesday is the climax of our school week. It means the week is
half-over, and at the Rochester Campus, it also means that a delicious hot lunch is waiting!
Each week, four kind moms donate their time and effort to come in and prepare a variety of
lunches for all the students to enjoy. These range from chicken to hamburgers to subs, and are
all very tasty! For students and staff, these lunches are $5, and the proceeds go directly back
to the school.
This year, our school kitchen has finally been certified for food prep and handling. So, our hot
lunch team has also opened up an awesome take-out service for local businesses and community
members. At 12:30, after the students have been
served, they can pick up a scrumptious hot and
ready lunch for $7 a person. It’s our version of a
drive-thru, and is a great set-up! We have heard
lots of positive comments from employees and
community members, who are encouraged to
stop by each week. This great fundraiser raised
$600 profit on the first week! Thank you to the
parents, students, staff and community who
all donate in one way or another to make this
program a massive success!

On Friday September 30th, we got into our

There we watched a reenactment of what
would have happened in the late 1700’s and
early 1800’s. After watching this inspiring
video we had a two hour tour of the whole
fort and saw them shoot a musket and a
mortar. Later on in the day after lunch we
learned how to be a real soldier and play

we had a great time and learned a lot more

Terry fox run
25 countries, including Canada, have participated in the Terry Fox Run since 1981. This has been
done to honor the Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist, Terry Fox. Terry
contracted osteogenic sarcoma in his knee. This type of bone cancer was known to spread rapidly
so Terry’s doctor suggested that his leg be amputated. The night before his surgery, Fox had read
an article about Dick Traum, an amputee who had run the New York City Marathon; inspired by
Traum’s example, Fox decided he would run across Canada to raise awareness and funds for cancer
research. After the amputation, he started chemotherapy which is a brutal program designed to
deal with cancer. There in the hospital, Terry felt like his situation was not anywhere near as bad
as the others. Not only did he feel compassion for the others, but also a sense of responsibility that
came with being one of the cancer survivors.
Although Terry had only one leg, he ran 5,373 km from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Thunder Bay,
Ontario (with an average of 42km/day)!
This year, Sterling North worked as a team to collect enough points (kilometres) to get Terry Fox
all the way across Canada. Each site had a map, a marker representing Terry Fox, and a drawn
out route that our school advanced along. We were hoping to make it all the way to the Pacific
coast, but we actually exceeded our goal and got Terry Fox far into the Pacific Ocean. Great work
everyone!

In the afternoon of October the 19th, the Abbotsford Campus held a pumpkin carving contest. Each student brought a pumpkin
already cleaned out and a stencil. After lunch the students got to work carving out their designs. Once these were finished, they
were judged by Mrs. Champion and Mr. Boetto, who judged based on Grade groups. In each group, there was a first and second
place winner. These students received either a $10 or $5 gift card. It was a fun, competitive afternoon for all!

In the first quarter of the school year Sterling North Edmonton Campus
was really busy. Between starting a brand new school year, welcoming a new
elementary teacher and voting in two new SLT members we almost didn’t have
time for anything else…almost! We went on a joint field trip with the Calgary
campus to a corn maze in Calgary, we also booked four times at Salto, our
local Gymnastics center. Oh…we also learned a little in the meantime, getting
back into the daily routine of math, social, science, English etc. So far a great
year, and we are all looking forward to the next quarter.

different situations. The pages were setup into the different Smarts and at the end of the survey we’d count up our points for each
category. The Intelligence that had the most points in that category is said to be your most probable strength. For some kids, they
were more kinesthetic and others were visual-spatial so it goes to show that we live in a very diverse world. We built a model of
the brain and placed all our name tags on the areas of the brain where our intelligences are found. The results of the activity show
us which kids we can go to for help in different situations.

new building is right next door—can’t get better than that!
Naturally, everyone is enjoying the new and improved setting.

trips. As an exciting finish before the week of holidays began, schools participated
in numerous adventures such as going to Dallas Valley Ranch, several students’
fear of heights were tested while going tree-trekking and others participated in
rounds of archery. While learning about light refraction, Hamilton students did
laser tag and bubble soccer. Another group of students visited a reptile museum
along with an intense visit to learn about hydroponics. There were many more
fun activities that happened during that fine Friday. These field trips were all an
excellent way to end the first quarter of the school year.

regina We have had an exciting start to the school year with lots of
fun activities and events. Some of these were the Terry Fox
Walk, and the most recent field trip.
Field Trip
On October 21, 2016 Oxbow joined us in Regina for a field trip. For the first half of the day, a cartoonist came to the school and
taught us how to draw cartoon pictures. In the afternoon, we went to Dallas Valley Ranch where the students were split into two
groups. One group went and did archery while the other built a campfire and roasted marshmallows. The day was a lot of fun and
was enjoyed by all.
Regina Terry Fox Run
Our school had a lot of fun doing the
Terry Fox Walk because it gave us a good
challenge. Our teachers had set a goal for
150km for our school and we crushed it
by doing 225km. Most of us spent our
spare time running or walking to get their
kilometers up. At collaboration, we went
for walks and we also went for a walk
during phys-ed class.

Drive Away Hunger
Throughout the week of October 10-14, our school participated in a
Drive Away Hunger activity. During collaboration each day, the students
learned about how we can change to drive away hunger in some people’s
lives, and how some people are suffering from hunger. We also did a food
drive along with the activities. We raised 258 pounds of food for a local
food bank.Thank-you Mrs.Winsnes and Mrs. Fenwick for arranging this!
Food Class
This year, the grade 11s and 12s are both taking Food and
Nutrition class. They have already learned many practical
kitchen skills, and have kept the teachers’ mouths watering
with the scents coming from the lunch room! In the grade
12 class, many unique vegetable dishes have been explored:
braised fennel, kohlrabi, eggplant, squash, sweet potatoes, and
red cabbage. A few other dishes that have been created so far
this year include mash balls, egg pizza, apple turnovers, hash
brown patties, and many more delicious foods.
Grade 5 Trip
On October 17th, we went to a Costume Museum for a field trip. It was
loads of fun. We had to complete a little worksheet in French. After we
went to the museum, we went to the Forks for our lunch. Another thing
was in the museum, there was a beautiful wedding dress that had never
been worn! It had tons of pearls on it. We would like to thank Mme.

Sister Campus Activity
The Stonewall Campus is pumped to have Minneapolis as our sister campus. On October 18th, we had our first sister campus activity.
Students participated in house teams in three different events: frog leap, 3-legged race, and egg throw. The activities were timed, and
points were awarded. First place went to red team with 8 points, and green and yellow teams tied for second with 5 points. The egg
throw was very well liked by the students even though it made quite a mess! Thanks for cooperating with us Minneapolis!

BarbaOdoursStaff
Our teachers, staff and board members made sure that we had a smooth beginning to the year. For most staff it was the combination
of new technology with the teaching which seemed to be the most challenging but as we enter the 10th week of our school term
the staff has clearly become more familiar with the technology and are for the most part able to communicate and intereact much
better with the students.
Looking Back
As we enter week 10 we look back and remember when school first started. Receptions coming in for their first day of school
and others either ready to come back to school or wishing they had a longer vacation. For the most part everyone was eager to
get back to school and to experience the new changes which for most of us as we know comes with challenges which from time
to time did become a bit frustrating but with some encouragement and support from staff and each other we overcame those
technical challenges and forged ahead. The secondary students were all issued with their personal computers which added a lot
of new responsibilities.
