Redoubt's original guns were built in

1793, but over the years the site was

enlarged and reinforced. Its lofty

vantage point gave it an important

communications role allowing it to

keep other bases informed of ships'

movements. During WWI, the site was

used as barracks for troops waiting to

go overseas. Early in WWII, the Redoubt

was used for harbour defences,

including an anti-submarine net that

stretched across the harbour's

entrance. York Redoubt remained in

military use until 1956. Today, the

public can wander among the

armament and 200-year-old

fortifications while enjoying the
fresh air and panoramic views
of the open Atlantic.
