Cover Design Rationale
A Place Dear to My Heart
2019-2020
Watercolour on paper
TPH Digital Yearbook’s cover design is a digitally enhanced work taken
from an original artwork called ‘A Place Dear to My Heart’ purposely made
in conjunction with the move from Tunku Putra School (TPS) to the new
Tunku Putra-HELP School (TPH).
A very special and meaningful collaborative masterpiece artwork by 2
talented sisters from Kuching namely Kamilia (2019 IGCSE graduate) and
Habsah (aka Shasha) in Year 10.
Done in watercolour, the artwork depicts a mother-like figure embracing a
student holding 2 books. The mother-like figure and the Sarawakian patterns
surrounding them resemble mother nature caring for her, right down from
her younger days providing love and warmth throughout the journey of
her life. Holding 2 books entitled TPS and TPH resembling the thing that is
equally important to her; education in a school (TPS and TPH).
Disclaimer: Photographs/Pictures shown throughout the TPH Digital Yearbook 2020 follows the timeline (before/after)
of Malaysian Governments directive of MCO, CMCO and RMCO regarding the adherence of Standard Operating Procedure for
various sections of the School; mixture of photos/pictures with students with or without masks/social distancing.

Executive Principal’s Message
MESSAGE FROM
THE EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL
2020 This year was always going to be historic for us - we started the new campus
has been and many aspects and routines of our new school life were to be learnt and
embedded. Daily life began with a different drop off routine, followed by
such an the school song, whilst we found our way around the new classrooms, corridors
unusual and play areas.
year in
so many No sooner had we settled into our first three months, and were happy to be
ways ….. on our beautiful new campus, with its swimming pool, lovely places to eat,
and spaces to run under the trees, we were suddenly denied the chance to
Mrs Julie return to the campus after our first mid-term break, due to the spreading
Dowling covid-19 pandemic. This was to continue for many months for some sections
of the school, primary students only returning for a mere 2 months at most.
Initially, teachers were stuck in remote locations up country, international
children were stuck out of the country, families were separated and the
world became turned on its head. All of us were suddenly
forced to rethink what education meant to us. Teachers and
students had to go online and communication became via
emails and video messages, zoom lessons and google
classrooms.
However, the lasting memory for me will be that
no-one gave up and said they could not do it- the
teachers kept going, despite their unfamiliarity with
the new ways of teaching. I am immensely proud of the
teachers who are the backbone of this school. Not once
have I heard them complain, no matter what has been
thrown at them. We all took online classes to learn how to teach
online! Zoom meetings became the norm, and we all learnt to adapt.

Executive Principal’s Message
Our students have been highly adaptable and relished
the chance to learn under all the circumstances, and our
resilient parents have been supportive of all that we have
tried to achieve. Testimony to our desire to succeed no matter
what, are our first cohort of A-Level students, who still were able
to achieve outstanding results, and our IGCSE students, who had to
sit their exams in November under strict covid rules and restrictions.
By the time the second lockdown came, not only were we so
capable of teaching online, TPH International Primary School
became the first ever school in the world to be Accredited as an
IPC School, solely via evidence based assessments, videos &
zoom meetings/lesson observations.
As we enter 2021, we will be proud to be celebrating our 25th
year as the school that never gave up!
In remembrance of what we have been through this year, the
magazine carries the “Covid Communications” from our Executive
Principal - that for many, became a message of hope, that kept many
parents going during this unusual time.
Imagine - Believe - Achieve

Unfortunately due to Covid-19 many school sports
{ }events were unable to happen this year.
However in term 1 we did manage to participate in a number of Inter-school events. The U-18 boys
Volleyball team reached the quarter-finals and in a nail-biter of a tough match just lost out to Lundu,
the eventual winners of the Kuching Divisional Schools tournament. Both the U-18 girls Netball and
Volleyball teams made it through to the quarter finals of their respective MSSM competition. Goal for
2021 - semi-finals! Students also participated in badminton tournaments and trained hard for swimming
and golf competitions before they were cancelled.

Our very own Joseph Chung Ming Chong received the inaugural TPH Young Innovator & Researcher Award
from Datin Chan-Low Kam Yoke. The ceremony was held on 6th March 2020 in the Laila Taib Library, attended
by the members of the TPH Board of Governors, the Senior Leadership Team of the School, and Joseph’s fellow
A-Levels students and teachers.
Joseph’s achievements include the gold medal at the national level in the Young Innovators Challenge both
in 2017 & 2018. The most recent one was part of a team that innovated a device meant to prevent infant
deaths in parked cars. This invention drew international attention and garnered him invitations to present
his work in Sweden, Canada, and Norway. Joseph has just returned from a 3-month internship atThe Genomics
Research Centre, Academia Sinica in Taiwan. This was a research based
project to research DNA extracts linked to Ogden Syndrome (related to
learning capabilities as determined by brain and muscle growth).
In light of all these achievements and exuding pride in this homegrown
Sarawakian talent, the TPH Board of Governors and the Senior Leadership
Team elected to honor Joseph with this award. In addition to recognizing Joseph’s
success, the leadership team also intended for his peers and friends attending
the ceremony to be inspired to achieve their own greatness.

This year, due to the pandemic outbreak, we had to cancel our plan for our students to fly over to Fukuoka,
Japan to attend the Summer School Programme with Chimneys English School. Despite the challenges,
TPH and Chimneys English School creatively worked together to create a virtual Summer Project which
allowed our students to interact online with Chimneys’ students.
Students from Chimneys English School produced various short videos about 5 topics on Japanese culture,
namely Ramen, Anime, Origami, Sumo and Festivals. Our International and National Primary students
were invited to join a Google classroom and after they watched the videos, they were encouraged to
participate in assignments and leave their comments in the classroom. Their comments were shared with
the Chimneys’ students and they gave their response and feedback. Some of our students even made
videos for their Japanese friends! It was a short but fun-filled project as our students learnt about some
Japanese culture and shared their thoughts. Heartfelt thanks to Chimneys English School for their friendship
and effort in making this project a great success! We hope to see them soon in Kuching in the near future!

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Tunku Putra-HELP School, Kuching has been awarded
accreditation for the International Primary Curriculum effective from 2020 to 2024. Following a rigorous
review of the school’s self-review and the remote accreditation visit conducted in November 2020 we
identified the following areas of excellent practice across the curriculum:
• Criterion 1: A clear focus on improving learning
• Criterion 4: International Mindedness and international learning
This is a wonderful tribute to the hard work, dedication and focus ofyour school community. A school
that is accredited provides evidence for and about the international curriculum and demonstrates
that the curriculum is both rigorous and developmental. Tunku Putra-HELP School is an important
symbol of our mission statement – Improving Learning. We send you our warmest congratulations
and thanks.
Yours sincerely, Gregory Biggs Divisional Director, Fieldwork Education
During the accreditation team’s visit to Tunku Putra-HELP School the accreditation team (which
comprised two other school principals): • studied the school’s judgements set out in its IPC Improving
Learning Portfolio • toured the school virtually • observed lessons in Zoom sessions • talked with the
Executive Principal, International Primary Academic Coordinator, and Milepost leaders at the end of
each day • talked with the Executive Principal separately • talked independently with the IPC Milepost
leaders • talked with all of the teachers including specialist teachers • talked with two groups of parents
in virtual meetings • talked with groups of learners in Mileposts 1, 2 and 3 • studied a wide range of
documentary evidence • met as the Accreditation Team to discuss and agree judgements against each
rubric and strand. • In addition, the team leader underwent a rigorous quality assurance process by two
senior colleagues from Fieldwork Education, to explain and justify the evidence base that led to each
judgement.

The annual TPH Health, Fitness and Well-being Week was once
again an interesting, sweaty, fun and enlightening week. Each year
I set a theme and a challenge for the students. This year’s theme
was sea2summit.The challenge was to follow a 500m route around
school and cover the distance of a mountain from sea level to its
summit.The challenge mountains were:
Kindy - Mt Murud 2,423m (highest mountain in Sarawak)
Primary - Mt Kinabalu 4,095m ( highest mountain in SE Asia)
Secondary Mt Everest 8,848m (highest mountain in the world)
Over the week, students completed the route during lessons and break times with many
successful summiteers among our staff and student body! Other activities during the week
included Zumba, poco-poco, health talks from dentists, ministryofficials and teachers, nap time,
mindfulness colouring, exploring the links between sugar, diet and health in DT and the issues
surrounding mental health through drama exercises.
Ourhealth and well-being isn’t something we should onlyfocus on once a week, but is ayearlong
investment. I encourage all in the school community to make a commitment to improving their
health this yearby getting outdoors, getting fit and exploring beautiful Kuching and Sarawak.

On 24 -26th February, the students spent a wonderful time participating in the activities of Week
Without Walls (WWWs). Various sections of the school have their exciting themes and activities happening all
over the school. In International Primary the focus was on International Mindedness and the WWWs has
neatly demonstrated its ever-increasing circles: beginning with our school community, expanding to look
at Malaysia as a community and finally the global community. Kindergarten WWWs were packed with
various out of class activities such as story-telling under the trees in the
courtyard and the amphitheatre as well as created a wall display artwork
as a community project in supporting and encouraging the children of
Wuhan through their tough time with Covid 19.
On School Community day, House spirit was at its highest when students
from respective House demonstrated their House cheers and presented
their House flags and banner. We were also impressed with the focus and
determination of the students, regardless of their House, who worked
together as a team with their teachers and completed the murals of
their House Logos on the wall of the school building. What a fantastic
memory to recall every time you see the murals!

Malaysia Community Day
All students of Lower Secondary (Years 7 to 9, and TK 1 to 3) certainly
had the opportunity to do this by spending on the 24th February
planning History and Geography lessons to teach to other
students.
International Community - Passport Day
Secondary students transformed classrooms into
countries whilst Primary students produced their
own passports as well as many other activities
related to global awareness. In the afternoon,
Primary students visited the 17 countries created
by Secondary students and got the opportunity
to do a variety of activities. The winning country
team was Korea, with Sweden coming in
second and Thailand and Jamaica joint third.

Students used their ingenuity and creativity to
participate in the very first online STREAM Day.
The school were involved in multiple activities
including:
- testing the strengths of ropes made out
of plastic bags
- recreating famous buildings from
around the world
- recording science shows to
demonstrate concepts
- discussing science stereotypes
- making their own gym equipment
- testing air bags with eggs
- coding using Scratch
There were some impressive structures made from dishes and
everyday materials while the most colourful entrants tested the density of
different liquids. Eggs were tested using plastic bags inflated with hairdryers, with
only a small number not surviving the drop! In the science show category, there were
excellent production values including explaining how bags can be leak proof.
A successful day which highlighted the fantastic resourcefulness and imagination of
all our students. Well done everyone! A special congratulations to Woohyeon (Yr8),
Debbie, Ryan Chin, Micah (Yr9), Rania (Yr10), Linus and Joseph (Yr12) for their extra
special, amazing videos and presentations!

This year, we offered a holiday programme to make up for the loss of ECAs due to Covid. We
decided to focus on our aim of becoming an Eco Accredited School thereby modelling positive
community actions. Each day Eco Week had an opening speaker, who inspired us all to be Global
Stewards ensuring that we understand our collective responsibilities for the future of our planet,
animals & natural surroundings.
Each speaker has inspired us to take positive action
in a proactive and community-centred way.
The activities run by the teachers each day followed
a theme as led by the speakers. The children had
great fun coming up with poems, artwork, posters,
dramas & recycled items.

INTRODUCING OUR SPEAKERS Dr. Chen is a freshwater turtle researcher and conservationist. Her research
interests are the biology and ecology of the river terrapins - a rare species
offreshwaterturtles onlyfound in SouthernThailand, Cambodia and Peninsular
Malaysia. In 2011, Pelf co-founded Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia
(TCS), a non-profit and non-governmental organisation dedicated to
freshwater turtle conservation in Malaysia. Pelf conducts numerous Turtle
Education Programmes with school students as well as Turtle Discovery
Trips for members of the public. She currently leads the community-based
terrapin conservation project in Kemaman, and was very recently awarded
the Commonwealth Points of Light from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for
the turtle conservation efforts. She is also a member of the International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle
Specialist Group.
Dr Aazani Mujahid is a marine scientist, and an academic working with
researchers from around the world to find solutions to global water
issues. She has been an avid scuba-diver since 12 years old, and has the
superpower of talking underwater. A Kuching native, she is a lover of naps,
documentaries, beaches, and naps on beaches (in no particular order).
She will share about water, life underwater, and how budding young
scientists are the most important everyday heroes in saving our precious
Earth. You can visit read more about her work (this is the serious stuff) at
https:/bit.ly/aazani_unimas or http:/bit.do/Aazani
Biologist turned photographer, Chien Lee has worked in California as an
environmental educator prior to moving to Kuching in 1996, having
discovered an incurable fascination with Borneo’s jungles. Engaged as a
professional wildlife photographer since 2003, he now travels throughout
the world’s tropics to document the astounding biodiversity of rainforests
through photographyand considers visual imagerya vital tool forconveying an
understanding and appreciation of nature. My talk will cover an intro to the
biodiversity of rainforests, their importance, the discovery of new species in
these disappearing habitats, and what needs to be done to save them.
Datin Dona Drury Wee, President of Sarawak SSPCA, consistently works
to promote a greater understanding of animal welfare. Datin Dona
has been the President for the past nine years. She strives to make a
better life for animals, give advice to the public on all matters of animal
welfare, to create awareness by educating children on the importance of
animal care which can later lessen the conflict between humans &
animals, especially in urban areas. Datin Dona strongly believes
robust neutering and micro-chipping programmes and enforcement of
the licensing laws are the answers to pet control.
Dr Tim Hatch came to Sarawak in 1977 with the Dept of Agriculture and
since then has devoted his time to environmental and conservation
issues - particularly reforestation. He runs a Facebook page called
‘Rescuing Borneo’.

We have now chosen 3 action projects for 2021:
Project 1 - was inspired by Speaker 1 - Dr Pelf - making recycled
bricks from plastic waste - which we will turn into planters;
benches and stools for the school grounds.
Project 2 - inspired by Datin Dona - Raising money through
the 4 houses for the SSPC to support their programmes in
positive animal welfare.
Project 3 - Planting Trees - with the support of Dr Tim Hatch.
We plan to create a club and bring nature into our campus.
Indeed we aim to take our mission to all other schools in
Sarawak and make this a community project.
Other community projects that already run are our Diveheart Support
