Bombay Boys: A Group Show of Paintings by
Anand Panchal, Gautam Mukherjee, Jagannath Paul,
Nishant Dange and Omswami

The exhibition brings together the works of Anand Panchal, Gautam
Mukherjee, Jagannath Paul, Nishant Dange and Om Swami, a collective
repertoire that is as variegated as it can get. The title of the exhibition is
a playful use of the 1998 Mira Nair cult comedy Bombay Boys, to
indicate that all the five participating artists are residents of the city of
Mumbai; and that is all that is common between these artists. This
group exhibition is a primary site for curatorial experimentation and, as
such, represents a new discursive space around artistic practice. It
offers new artistic interventions and observations of a fragile world: a
world in which social relations are masked by ahistorical, untruthful
‘truths’; a world in which technology and ideology have merged to
produce a complex image-landscape in which reality can no longer be
taken for granted; a world in which nature has been altered so quickly
and completely as to become almost a simulacrum of itself. In this
uncertain and challenging moment, this diverse group of artists,
informed by their working proximity are developing methods to critique,
analyze, and recover vulnerable images, materials, and relations.

Collectively, the exhibition offers a partial glimpse rather than a
sweeping overview of the complex the complex and evergrowing
iterations fielded by these artists. Now as it emerges, there is a sense of
defamiliarisation and conceptions of the self as a fixed and
autonomous subject which runs as a shared feeling in each of these
works. These creative gestures are at once expressions of resiliency,
resistance, and celebration.

Anand Panchal

Born in Latur, Maharashtra, Anand Panchal is a critically acclaimed artist who
studied at the J.J School of Art in Mumbai. Lyrical, rustic worlds take centre
stage in Panchal’s acrylics on canvas. His incandescent art documents the
enduring soul of India, as seen in its indigenous culture, beliefs and traditions.

From capturing the simplicity of village life to the richness of Indian mythology,
the artist displays great range, punctuating the figurative and symbolic
elements with abstract spaces, making his paintings appear vast as well as
intimate. Like the notes beguiling of a lilting, many-hued raga, Anand
Panchal’s compositions are coloured in a radiant palette of brilliant reds, blues
and ochres. The bold colours are balanced out perfectly with his signature
technique of combining the smooth and the textured in his application of paint.
His impasto knifework transforms into a finely blended surface seamlessly,
creating depth in his works. With imagery that is poetic and magical,
communicating the artist’s mastery of technique, Panchal’s artworks
command a presence that lingers in your mind long after you look away.

Gautam Mukherjee

Gautam Mukherjee is a very sensitive artist, he is sensitive towards his
subjects, which are mainly revolve around his family. They are not portraits of
his family members but are rather representation of the values a family holds
for him. Recently with the birth of his child the works capture the love and
bonding that a child brings into a family.

Over a period of time Mukherjee's style has evolved , the colors have
brightened , the characters in his works have acquired a cheerful note from the
earlier works which more sombre. But the focus has always been the family,
with emphasis on the close bonding between them , shown by the physical
contact with each other, be it husband - wife , mother-child ,grandparent-
grandchild or between siblings. The attention to composition, background ,
detailing of the people, in traditional Bengali attire and jewellery in an
environment that is reminiscent of the old Kolkata havelis. All enhanced by the
deep and rich hues of color.

Jagannath Paul

Jagannath Paul has graduated from the Government College of Arts & Crafts,
Kolkata. He has won many prestigious awards.

He is known for his charcoals on paper or canvas. His works bring out the
drama of black and white by introducing solid blocks of paint, which are
restricted to reds, yellows and orange. The contrast sets the mood of the work,
highlighting the character that he paints. His skillful rendering of the female
form shows an innate understanding and mastery of the subject.

Nishant Dange

Born in Nagpur, Nishant Dange received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from
the Government Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur, in 2004. Throughout his
education, he bagged the top honors as a first class student every year and
also received a Gold medal from the Institute. Though the majors of his
education were in applied art, he was always attracted towards painting,
sketching and landscaping.

Nishant’s paintings resonate with the black and white photograph and the red
backdrop add a hint of drama to them. The peacefully gradating black and
greys are lit by either a flood of monochromatic hues seeping through the
entire female face or a touch of vibrant colour imparted to a butterfly or a
flower. Nishant’s paintings are a magnificent blend of primal, spiritual and
mystical. The seamlessness of charcoal and the changing tones of blacks and
greys give these paintings a nostalgic effect of the black and white era. The
painstakingly drawn motifs, the blossoming flowers and the fluttering
butterflies add a hint of magic. Nishant’s artwork will surely take you to a
transcendental journey of a monochromatic magical world.

Omswami

Om Swami is a self-taught contemporary artist, who studied at Raheja
College. Just like the artist himself, Om Swami’s art, follows his heart. The
beauty of his work is in the fluidity & movement of his subjects.

Even in his figurative works where no movement is depicted, one takes one
look at the subject & can feel the energy within the painting.

Adhering more to a different approach and tenor, the paintings of Om Swami
propounds on certain human traits like sensuality and love using bold and
thick strokes. The 'She' highlighted in his paintings, to an extent is a
comprehensive revision of certain traditional aspects, the archaic women,
which has been in the human imagination for a long period of time.
Swami’s stylised figurative paintings illustrate the romance between a man
and a woman. Though he portrays his subjects without eyes, they seem to be
at a spiritual sync and share an emotional connect. These subjects
communicate with each other in the language of love, which though is
inaudible, touches the observers’ eyes.
