Ariane-Poetry-Book-5

Dedication

My poetry book is dedicated to my father who has
always supported me and inspired me. My poem
book is his 60th birthday present. He is the most
intelligent, generous and loving man I know and he
always puts others needs before his own. Throughout

every difficult or great time, he has been there
supporting me and encouraging me.

has found its thought and the
thought has found words.”

I AM

I am strong-minded and bubbly.
I wonder where people get the courage to be themselves, even
when society doesn’t agree.
I hear a dragon roar in a distant mountain.
I see fairies dancing on gentle sunbeams.
I want to be surrounded by amazing people.
I am strong-minded and bubbly.
I pretend to float on warm gales of wind.
I feel infinite when I am with angels.
I touch the scales of a mighty serpent.
I worry about isolation and rejection.
I cry when people treat animals unjustly and inhumanely.
I am strong-minded and bubbly.
I understand that to reach success, it is important to be bold and
hardworking.
I say that to be happy, you cannot dwell on the past and on
memories.
I dream of being onstage and receiving thunderous applause.
I try to be kind and accepting with the people who surround me.
I hope to have a positive impact on the word I live in.
I am strong-minded and bubbly.

~ONSTAGE ALLIES~

There we are, waiting backstage
With the smell of theatre and synthetic smoke
I grin at you when our favourite song in the musical
plays
You whisper one of our renowned inside jokes
Those recollections of our carefree times replay in my
mind
And I can’t help but feel remorse for how we grew apart
Back in those days we were of a similar kind
But today we are separated in friendship but together in
Heart
There have been so many things you have had to face
Things you should not have to face at your age
Your parents decided to go their separate ways
I wish we could journey back to our days on the stage
So even though we are not as inseparable as we were
before
Even though we no longer share that understanding of
each other
I hope that you will come to a place where life allows you
to soar
And no matter how distant we are, you will always
be my onstage brother

~ THE PALETTE THAT IS MY LIFE ~

If my days are numbered by greed and by pride
And my nights are numbered by sleep and tears I’ve cried

Then I’ll live each day and I’ll breathe each night
As if tomorrow I’ll wake up in the sky
The stars light up my eyes
As they shine across the charcoal sky
And the city skyline paints my mind

With colours from the palette that is my life
So as time ticks by and moon becomes sun
The hourglass sand continues to run

My bones will grow weak and my hair will turn grey
But my memories will keep me from age.
Cause my memories are stars that shine
Brightly in charcoal skies
And skylines that paint my mind

With colours from the palette that is my life

~WANDERLUST~
Wanting to voyage far and wide
Adventures on aeroplanes, trains, ships and cars
Never going to rest until there is nowhere left to visit
Dangerous terrain is where I want to be
Exhilarating experiences that are rare and unique
Reading maps to find new locations
Lost – a term that is non-existent in my vocabulary
Understanding people with contrasting lifestyles
Seeking memories and an understanding of life in different areas
Travelling overseas to exotic environments

LAMENT FOR THE FRIENDS WHO HAVE LEFT

It almost seems as if I was chosen from a crowd
To become friends with all of you (the friends that are destined to leave)
For some of you, it was not a choice you made to leave me like you did
For others, it was a decision, an initiative, and an aim of yours
You were the pieces of my chess game
It seemed as if I was winning the match
Until one wrong move got all of you snatched away by the other team
I felt responsible, worthless, but mostly sad, that we had to be separated this way
My trust in friendship and honesty has been crushed into minute shards
I used to believe that best friends are the ones that stick together forever,
But what you showed me
Is that best friends are stuck so strongly,
That it is painful to pull them apart
And once they are pulled,
They resemble paper that has been pulled apart after being glued-
Torn, thin and weak
You weakened me, tore me apart
You stomped on my thin shell,
But still
I’d like you to know
That I miss you
I miss the seconds, minutes, hours we spent
Laughing, fooling around and not caring about the outside world
I still remember the jokes we made.
I wish those memories were stronger than the ones I have
Of you
Walking away as if nothing ever happened.
But they aren’t
They never will be
Because I’m scarred
Bruised
Hurt
For some of you, it wasn’t your fault.
For some of you, it was completely your fault.
And so I write about the passing of our friendship,
I write of the friends that have become strangers.

~FRIENDSHIP~
Friendship is a powerful sunset-orange.
It sounds like the giggling of two allies.
It tastes like movie popcorn that is eaten
during a romantic comedy.
It smells like oak trees that can only be climbed
with a trusty colleague.
It looks like feathers floating through the air
after a ferocious pillow fight.
It makes me feel as if I will always have a
place where I can laugh my hours away and be
as I am without judgement.

Ariane
Vivacious, determined, meticulous
Daughter of Xenia and George Angelopulo and granddaughter

humans who can see deeply into people’s hearts.
Who felt the pain of errors and experienced adoration and
fulfilment.
Who fears heights, isolation and incompetence.
Who performed in the production of The Sound of Music, who
shall perform in the production of Annie and who travelled to
Thailand to take part in the International Maths and Science
Olympiad.
Who wants to experience the beauty of travel, the joy of
improving the life of an individual and the thrill of a carefree
dance in the rain.
Who lives in Waterkloof Ridge in Pretoria.

~THE SPOTLIGHTS AND STANDING OVATIONS~
As the stage lights beam
And the heavy red curtains open
And the conductor raises his hands
Higher and higher
He drops them
And the overture flows into the ears of the audience
The cello starts the orchestra off
Piano keys lightly join
The trumpet produces a steady rhythm
And the theatre is filled with a suspenseful atmosphere
Backstage butterflies,
Costume corrections,
Big breaths
In
Out
The leading character carries a powerful presence onstage
And she opens her mouth
The storyline comes flooding out
Over the following hour, or so
People laugh, shed tears and have a marvellous time
The final scene arrives and it leaves an imprint
On the hearts of audience members
Performers
Musicians
A musical is a way for people to escape the heaviness of everyday life
It is a rollercoaster of emotions, a form of expression
A purpose, my light

ODE TO CRAWFORD
~PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE MIND~

My mind opens a box
Crammed with photographs
I select one
It is of me
Braving my first day of school
The photograph is indistinct
But I recollect the sensation I felt that day clearly
Who knew that this particular photograph would lead
to years of many more images?
I select another picture
It is of a younger me playing on the jungle gym
That day I was a princess and the wooden structure was my palace
That construction was a platform
for great adventures
Suddenly another image appears in my mind’s eye
of my first massive achievement
And then another photo
I’m not quite sure what I’m doing or where it is
But one thing is for sure-
In that photograph
I am happy
I feel fulfilment, contentment and gladness
I was, in that moment
The best version of myself
Because of the location where these photos are set
Because of what taught me to take these pictures
Crawford
It has produced all of these images
They symbolize a time of learning and youth
In the scrapbook of my life
