What are principles of design?
• The principles of design describe the ways that artists use the elements of
art in a work of art
• There are 6 principles of design:
Balance
Repetition
Proximity
Contrast
Space
Alignment
Space
• The definition of space is the close to what you already know what it means
• It design space means the distance between, around, beneath, above, below
the element
• To have a good design, there must be positive and negative space within the
elements.
Balance
• Balance is best described as the sharing of visual weight of objects, colors,
texture, and space.
• The point of balance is for the design to look or feel like it is stable
• Usually the design surrounds the center of a shape
• There are two types of Balance:
Symmetrical
Asymmetrical
Repetition
• Repetition can make a presentation very stunning by bringing and tying
together visual elements
• It helps creates a flow and rhythm for your design
Proximity
*Proximity creates relativity with elements
*Proximity helps create a focal point of the design and draws the audience’s
attention
*Although they do not need to be placed together, they need to in some way,
connect to create a focal point
Contrast
• Contrast in design is the amount of differences in the element of the design.
• All though many people think that contrast just deals with color, it is also
used in any design element
Alignment
• All though alignment may not seem as important as the rest of the other
principles, it is just as important.
• Alignments helps to create organization for the design
• When you add the alignment principle to your design it also helps create a
visual connection in all the parts of the design
