What are principles of design?
• The principles of design describe the ways that artists use the elements of
art in a work of art
• There are 6 principles of deisgn:
Balance
Emphasis
Scale/Proportion
Contrast
Proportion
Unity
Balance
• Balance is best described as the sharing of visual weight of objects, colors,
texture, and space.
• The point of balance is for the design to look or feel like it is stable
• Usually the design surrounds the center of a shape
Emphasis
• Emphasis in design is an area that is the place that is supposed to capture
the viewer’s attention most out of any other places on the design.
• Emphasis is the way of making a special area the focal point of the design
• This can be done by placing elements on the design in positions where the
center is naturally drawn, by using things such as contrast.
Scale/Proportion
• Scale or Proportion in design refer to the size of the elements in the design.
It has to do with the relationship between the things in the design
• In design, this is very important as it is the most important principle of
design.
Contrast
• Contrast in design is the amount of differences in the element of the design.
• All though many people think that contrast just deals with color, it is also
used in any design element
Unity
• Unity in design is when elements in a design are combined or put together to
form a sort of relationship.
• When this happens the composition does not become confusing.
• Even though this is a principle of design, it shoes the sense and quality of
the purpose of the design
