“Risk Communication on The Application of Agricultural Biotechnology”

ABSTRACT

Modern agro-biotechnology has been so rapidly developed and adopted during the past 20 years. Hence, the rigorous

oversight upon the technology has been done due to a range of potential social, economic and environmental benefits.

However, due to the great potential on one side and perceived risk on the other side, it has been the object of controversial

and divisive debates. The threat could pose to humankind, environment and the very survival of life on earth. Because of

such exaggeration, it is difficult for the public to distinguish fact from fantasy. The acceptance of any technology, including

agro-biotechnology, is based not only the technological soundness per se, but also on how it’s perceived to socially,

economically and politically. Public acceptance in modern agro-biotechnology is one of the factors that will influence the

extent to which countries benefited by the technology to increase agriculture production. Potential risks associated with the

use of modern agro-biotechnology are controlled by a framework of policy, regulation and management. Set of measures or

actions addressing the safety aspect related to the application of biotechnologies and the release of its products into the

environment can be defined as biosafety. There are several major public concerns which have hampered the adoption of

modern agro-biotechnology, i.e. safety issues related to human health, detrimental environmental impacts, regulatory issues,

economic and ethical concerns. Some of the concerns may be legitimate while others clearly result from lack of information

and/or misinformation about the technology. In recent years there has been a growing recognition that the success of agro-

biotechnology biosafety projects and frameworks depends largely on the use of communication as a facilitating tool for public

participation and informed decision making. The decision makers and civil society should be involved, integrated, properly

consulted, informed and mobilized. The controversy along with the application of modern agro-biotechnology is complex

biosafety risk communication. A multidisciplinary approach alone is not enough to explain the issues. The agro-

biotechnology advocate should remain proactive in delivering accurate and prudent agro-biotechnology information. 16
